The position I take on the "lay/lie" thing is a lazy one: I believe the sole purpose of grammar rules is to facilitate understanding--eliminate ambiguity, keep the reader in the proper time and space, those sorts of things. In cases where rules exist but there is no real chance that the reader is confused, I don't concern myself much with the rule. I really don't think there's any chance that the reader is confused when a writer messes up the "lay/lie" rule. After all, other than the fact that you know this rule, you didn't really think Heidi was laying eggs, right? :) In fact I think that because the word "lie" has a completely different meaning ("tell a falsehood"), I'm a bit concerned that there might be more confusion in following this rule than in ignoring it. The pain infliction is nonconsensual, she does not get an exit option or any kind of choice in the matter. She's not even given the choice to leave the household and live with someone else instead of being tortured, which at least would constitute some form of consent on some fundamental level. I think that's a betrayal of the positive character dynamic they had in the story before. I generally don't mind rape and torture stories, I've written far worse ones myself. After all, it's just fiction. But when you have people defending the described form of torture in the real world, it tends to get creepy. At that point, a critical distancing element in the plot, or a disclaimer, or perhaps a comment that the author does not endorse the legality of this human rights violation in the real world, is very helpful.
