Note: This story was dynamically reformatted for online reading convenience. This is a Windows ONLY program, written in Visual Basic 6. It is FREE - no nags, no ads, no banners, none of that nonsense. The system it was developed on is continuously by 2 different anti-virus programs, and is virus-free when downloaded from asstr. It reads in 3 files: last.txt <-- surnames (Smith, Jones, etc.) female.txt <-- female names (Jane, Sarah, Susan, etc.) male.txt <-- male names (Bob, Bill, etc.) These three text files are several hundred each of male/female names, several THOUSANDS of surnames. These 3 text files are completely editable by the user; in each file, only the first line is not used, everything after that is used by the program. Of note is that the program *completely* handles all the overhead; you can easily add and remove names as long as each name is on a line by itself. Of special note is that the name.txt file (surnames) contains names from a variety of ethnic/national/cultural identities - if you need to use or avoid a particular name, simply select a new surname. Program usage is REALLY easy: after the program starts, simply click on the buttons for male, female, or family names until you get something you like. The names are selected about as randomly as I can manage, so you may be at it for a while, depending on your needs. You'll have to manually transfer the name when you're done. If the program is useful, please let me know: I'm thinking about a few enhancements for my own use, such as nicknames, the ability to copy the name to the Windows clipboard, and perhaps dividing surnames by ethnic groupings. dorsai@mail.com 15 Apr 2001 I've fixed the installation problem, and a couple of minor hiccups. The program now installs all the files to the right places, including it's own NameMaker directory under Program Files. My thanks for your patience, and understanding. Dorsai 21 April 2001 The program now includes the ability to copy names to the clipboard. This is done by clicking on the COPY button. The program also copies the name(s) generated to the clipboard before exiting. Dorsai
