Due to various expected and unexpected problems the server was down
from about 5 pm 12/31 till about 7pm 1/7/93. During this time about
100 requests were destroyed/lost due to these problems. All known
problems have been corrected.

I have an email file server that has many of the stories posted to
alt.sex.bondage, rec.arts.erotica, and alt.sex.stories. Please read
this entire posting. There are several sections and you can skip those
that are not relavent. I've tried to deal with most of the common
problems and situations that can occur. The server machine does NOT
support anonymous ftp.

To get started send the word help as the first and only word in the
message body to: server@hermes.acm.rpi.edu. DO NOT SEND EMAIL to
hermes@acm.rpi.edu, this is the hermes sysadmin mailing list and has
nothing to do with the server.

The server currently scans both the subject line and the mssage body
for commands. I plan on discountinuing the scanning of the subject
line in the future.

If you do not get a response in a reasonable time (the program that
generates the help message runs twice an hour) you may want to try
again and use the path command. The help message has more details.

path <your email address>

will cause the server to use the supplied address rather then the one
that arrived in the message header.

Any messages from accounts root, deamon, mailer-deamon, system, and
other system type accounts are forwarded to me as the server assumes
its receiving a bounce/mail trouble message, not a request. The parser
is very stupid so things like user@a.absystem.com get trapped. I plan
on rewriting the entire server, when I have the time.

The server is a collection of shell scripts and as such has some
limitations on the contents of messages. If you have any shell escape
character appearing in your message or header, the message tends to get
flushed to the bit bucket and I see an error message and have to spend
time searching the logs to find the cause of the problem. If there are
too many requests, the argument length limit can be exceeded.

I am currently adding material to the server from september 1991.

I do have all the adventures in rubber stories and I'm working on
getting a full set of Elf's JE stories added.

===== EMAIL ADDRESSES

all server requests: server@hermes.acm.rpi.edu
admin people: server-admin@hermes.acm.rpi.edu (preferred)
               multics%acm.rpi.edu@rpi.edu
               (root or postmaster)%hermes.acm.rpi.edu@rpi.edu (worst)

Anonymous (wi.5203 or wi.4717)@n7kbt.rain.com or an2383@anon.penet.fi

===== BOUNCED EMAIL

Physical access to the machine is difficult so hardware and system
software problems can take several days to resolve. The current record
downtime is 3 weeks to get an ethernet card replaced. Normal for
software is 1 weekday to push the reset button for a reboot. If mail
is bounced by rpi.edu, please wait at least a week before retrying. If
a known outage will take more then a day or two to fix, I will post a
status message to alt.sex.bondage, alt.sex.stories, and
alt.sex.stories.d.

If mail to you bounces I will attempt to resolve the problem and try to
get a ping messge to you. If the bounce seems to be a mail problem at
your site or on the way to your site, I will send the bounce part of
the message to what appears to be the best postmaster.

===== PRIVACY

The server logs all incoming requests and all responses. This
information is retained for a few days before being deleted. I
normally check the logs at least once a day to try and find any server
bugs/problems as early as possible. I don't care who you are or where
you are unless you are extremely greedy in accessing the server or
submitting requests that are causing problems with the server.

If you need anonymous access to the server, you may use the penet.fi
ACS server. To get help on the penet.fi send email to
help@anon.penet.fi. Please do not use this service unless you feel you
really need it. If you do use this, please only ask for one or two
stories at a time.

===== AUTHORS:

If you are an author and would like your material placed in the server
(assuming it's not already there:) or you do not want your material to
appear in the server, send email to server-admin@hermes.acm.rpi.edu, do
not reply to the address in this posting. If you have any questions,
complaints, comments, etc, send email to
server-admin@hermes.acm.rpi.edu.

I am attempting to contact and get permission from the author of every
item I'm placing in the server. This significantly slows down placing
items there, but i feel that I should make the attempt. If I can't
find the author and there is no copyright preventing it, I will place
stories in the server. I'll usually wait at least a month before doing
this from my first contact attemp.

===== TECHIE stuff for the curious :) (last section)

Hardware: 486-33 256K cache, 16MB RAM, Seagate st4766E 676MB,
Micropolis 1355 144MB (server has 72MB partition here), Everex EV2027
ethernet, 5.25 HD floppy. This system is connected to a DEC delni,
which is then connected to a router. I think the router is attached to
the campus FDDI fiber optic net and then out over a T1 line to the rest
of the world.

Software: Esix SYS V R 4.03. The server is a heavily modified version
of Brian Reid's decwrl package.

Service started 19 July 1991. As of 11 December 1992 22:32, 18409
requests have been processed. Largest single request 400K, Largest
weeknight run 5.1MB, smallest about 800KB.
