To Catch a Monster Part 3

Special Agent Rhianna Summer stood waiting in a visitors room at the Georgia
State Federal Penitentiary. She was nervous and a little angry.
On the flight from Miami she had gone over the files sent to her by her
boss, scanning them for anything of use.
She found that the files were not much more than crime scene reports and
autopsy details. It was a lot of information, but none of it really gave
her what she needed, the framework of the case itself.
Who were these three dead women? The files gave their names, but not their
address's. There were no contact reports, no families listed, no follow up
reports of any kind. It was as if no one had done anything about the
murders except acknowledge they had happened.
What made her mad, and nervous, was where her next source of information was
supposed to come from.
In a letter to her written by her boss James Vessor, her orders were clearly
spelled out.
Go to Georgia.
Secure the temporary release of Matthew Anderson.
Listen to what he has to say about the case.
Follow his lead on how to approach the people involved.
Rhianna was also told that she was the lead agent and could request any help
she thought necessary. But she was also to take great care not to make
waves, and to be as discrete as possible in her investigation.
Not the greatest orders she had ever received, especially about Matthew
Anderson. She wondered what she would say when he came in the door.
She had no more time to think about it.
Matthew stepped in wearing a blue prison uniform. He was followed in by a
guard.
He looked fit to Rhianna's eyes, although a little pale. She caught his eye
and saw a familiar smile, and images of when that smile really meant
something flashed through her mind.
She took a deep breath and held it.
Matthew for a moment almost didn't recognize Rhianna. Her hair was a lot
longer, for she had let it grow in the past two years, doing nothing to cut
it except for the occasional styling. Also she was wearing a complete
business suit, her stiff skirt coming down to mid calf. It was more clothes
than Matthew had ever seen on her at one time. It was almost like she had
deliberately dressed to hide herself from him. Matthew remembered the body
under those clothes, he had been thinking about it for the past two years.
The prison guard watched the Agent and the Prisoner stare at each other for
a full minute before he broke the silence.
"Excuse me Maam." he said to Rhianna. "Do you want me to stay?"
Rhianna shook her head.
"I'll be...right outside the door then." said the guard, and he slowly left
the room, pulling the door closed behind him.
He was still visible through the window however, keeping a watchful eye on
the female agent alone with the male prisoner.
"Hello, Pet." Matthew said at last, breaking the silence between them.
"The name's Special Agent Rhianna Summer." Rhianna replied.
"It's been a long time, Special Agent Rhianna Summer." Matthew said with a
smile.
"Has it? I wasn't keeping track."
Matthew laughed. "Shall we sit down?" he asked, gesturing to the table
where two empty chairs faced each other.
Rhianna nodded and waited until Matthew sat down before moving to the table
herself.
Matthew picked up one of the files that Rhianna had left there and began to
page through it, he figured there would be plenty of time to get to know
this woman again. He had waited two years, he could wait a little longer.
But Damn it was good to see her again, and she looked great!
His smile faded completely as he saw who was in the file.
"June." he said quietly.
"What?" Rhianna asked.
"June. I knew her. She was going to marry my nephew in the spring. I would
have been out of here just in time, with luck, to be at the wedding."
"You knew her?"
"Oh yeah, since she was a little girl..." Matthew stopped and just looked
at the picture of June from the autopsy report.
"I'm sorry." Rhianna said. She was. She had no idea that this was Matthew's
connection to the case.
Matthew put down the file and picked up another. "Mary. A great musician. I
remember the argument the families had over whether she would be allowed to
bring a piano in.
Eventually old Gabe said she could if she learned to play Chopin. God she
was good!" He picked up the third file. "Alice. What a brat!" He chuckled,
a fond remembrance. "Always trying to out boy the boys. A damn good archer.
I never could master one of those things. I heard she was thinking of
leaving the compound."
"I didn't know you knew them all." Rhianna said honestly.
Matthew looked up. "No, you wouldn't. There's a lot about this you don't
know, a lot that you wont find written down anywhere."
"Will you tell me?"
Matthew took a deep breath and let it out. "How have you been Rhianna? You
look well."
"We're here to talk about this case, not me." Rhianna replied.
"You're here to get me out, and to follow my orders so you can find this
killer."
"Maybe." said Rhianna. "If I'm convinced that you need to go."
"Oh I need to. You wont get anywhere with the families without me."
"The families?" Rhianna asked.
Matthew smiled. "How are you Rhianna?"
Rhianna paused. "I'm fine. Thank you." she said finally.
"Do you still have nightmares?" he asked.
"No...well almost never. All that is in the past now."
Matthew looked at her, one of those looks that seem so casual and yet burned
so deeply inside her. "You seeing anyone?"
"I don't think details of my private life are any concern of yours anymore.
Now tell me about the families!"
Matthew sat back and put his hands behind his head. He looked at the ceiling
in thought for a moment before speaking.
"Back in the Nineteen Thirties, during the Great Depression, a lot of
people's lives were ruined. A lot of blame was cast about as to why the
country was suddenly broke, why land that was worth a great deal the day
before was suddenly worthless, why there wasn't a job to be had when only
the week before there had been a hiring boom. Blame was cast in a lot of
places by many groups.
One group, led by several very able and practical men, blamed the industrial
age itself for the country's problems. They wanted people to go back to a
simpler time, a time before when machines did all the work.
Unable to convince the populace, they gathered together their families and
friends and headed out to find a place where they could settle down and live
the life they wanted.
The families found that place in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. It was
still fairly isolated back then, and these practical men used the last of
their money to buy almost an entire mountain and set up a perpetual fund to
keep the group operating. Deals were made with State and Federal officials
to grant the community some protection from invasion and taxation. Back
then these things were doable if you knew the right people, and crossed
their palms with the right amount of cash.
The compound was established, the land secured, and the families formed the
community they wanted with the minimum of influence from the outside world."
"That doesn't seem possible." Rhianna said.
"Oh it was, the timing had to be just right, and a country in financial
turmoil provided that time.
The compound grew and for seventy years it has existed with very few
problems."
"How do you know about this?" Rhianna asked.
"I was born there." Matthew answered, looking at her.
Rhianna looked away from him, from those eyes. Instead she looked at the
files. He was born there? "These women. Are they...?"
"Yes. They're all from the compound. Someone is hunting us Rhianna. For
seventy years the only deaths among those who chose to live in the compound
were from accidents or natural causes. No one had ever been murdered, not
there. But three in the past year! It's why you're here Rhianna. We need
the help!"
"You don't strike me as someone who is from a community of people who have
given up technology." Rhianna said.
Matthew shook his head. "Didn't you ever wonder why I couldn't get past
solitaire on my home computer? I left the compound when I was eighteen. I
found the attraction of the outside world too big to miss out on. No one
there is held against their will, except for the children of course who are
only cautioned against leaving until they are thought old enough. We lose
about half our youngsters that way, but you know what? A third of them come
back to live, usually bringing with them new wives or husbands so they can
raise families of their own.
The rest, like me...well we never entirely lose our connection to that
place. Before I ended up here I would go back a couple of times a year to
visit my family, and get back to my roots."
"So, you know the people, you know the place. Is that why I have to get you
out of here, to be my guide?" she asked him.
"No, to be your husband." Matthew said with a smile.
Rhianna stared at him open mouthed. "What are you talking about?"
"No one in the compound can know who you are and why you are there. My
brother Paul suspects that it might be one of us who is the killer, and he
doesn't want them spooked by an official investigation from the outside.
That's why we asked for you Rhianna, we knew you would be able to understand
and fit into the community and still have the police skills we need to find
the monster in our midst."
"Are you talking about my going undercover again?" Rhianna asked.
"Of course I am, Rhianna. Paul can't bring you in, not in any capacity that
would give you the trust of the families. Which leaves me. The only way I
can bring you in so you can do anything at all is if we set you up to be my
bride."
"Why me? Why not another female Agent?"
"Well, first there is our obvious chemistry together." smiled Matthew.
Rhianna snorted. Matthew went on. "But also there is the unique nature of
how things are done at the compound."
Rhianna got a sinking feeling. "You're not setting me up to be your slave
again are you?"
"No. My wife, not my slave."
"Is there really any difference with you?"
"Yes. It wont be like...like last time. But it wont be like the modern
world either. It's hard to explain. Women have their roles in the
compound, but they aren't looked down upon or considered second class
citizens or even slaves. It's just that sexual roles are more rigidly
defined. Also there is a certain moral change that has evolved over the
years."
"Oh God. And there are children there?"
"It's not what you think, Rhianna. Trust me!"
Trust him, Rhianna thought, could she trust him?
She had a question, one of hundreds. "IF we do this, and it's a big if, who
would know about me?"
"Me, my brother Paul who is the compound's Guardian, somewhat like a Mayor
and a Sheriff all in one. Gabe Miller, our oldest citizen and one of the
founders, and Sheriff Kinkade who conducted the official investigation and
first requested the help of the FBI. He will also be helping you to
investigate any outsiders that may be involved. There is a town about twelve
miles from the compound and relations between the two have always been
strained. The Sheriff is one of the few people who is actually cordial to
us. Needless to say we don't mix much."
Rhianna gathered her files together and stood up, her mind awash. "I need to
think about this. I'll let you know." she said, walking toward the door and
knocking on it.
"Rhianna. It really has been good to see you again." Matthew told her.
Rhianna glanced at him, but didn't trust herself to look into those eyes
again. The door opened and she left the room and the man behind her.

It was quiet on the half filled overnight flight to Denver, Colorado. Most
of the passengers on the DC10 were asleep.
In a section of seats at the back by themselves, Rhianna Summer sat with
Matthew Anderson. They were not alone. Sitting with them was Owen Johnson,
Rhianna's partner. He had joined them in Atlanta, flying in directly from
New York at Rhianna's request. Rhianna had briefed him on all she knew
about the case and on her need to go undercover with Anderson. Owen was fine
with it, the couple had worked several undercover ops together. What
Rhianna DIDN'T tell Owen was what she feared she might find the living
conditions in the compound were. He still didn't know about her doing THAT
kind of work.
Owen immediately took charge of Anderson, dismissing the two US Marshals who
had accompanied Rhianna from the prison to the city.
Rhianna had barely said a word to Matthew, who had traveled in chains until
just before boarding the plane. He had found it ironic at the time that now
HE was the one in bondage, but the novelty quickly wore off when Rhianna
failed to see the humor in it.
Now he sat between the agents, his right hand cuffed to Owen's left.
Owen sat back with his eyes closed, it looked like to Matthew that he was
asleep. Matthew was glad, it meant that for the first time since their
earlier talk, he and Rhianna could chat in private.
Matthew looked over at her, enjoying the closeness the airline seats gave
them. He could smell her, jasmine he thought. He loved it.
"Thank you." he said to her, quietly.
Rhianna looked up from a magazine she had been staring at. She had been
trying to ignore the man next to her, but the close seating had also
affected her. Over the last two years he had lost none of his presence.
"What for?" she asked.
"For allowing me to help you." he said.
"You were right, there is no other way to talk to your people. I had no
choice but to bring you." Rhianna said gruffly.
"Still. I appreciate it."
"Appreciate the fact that Sheriff Kinkade backed up your story about how
closed your little community is. Without his say so you would still be back
in your cell counting the roaches!"
Matthew said nothing for a moment, he waited until Rhianna went back to her
magazine. "Why so harsh Rhianna?"
"That's Agent Summer to you."
"Did I hurt you, harm you in any way?"
Rhianna did NOT want to have this conversation. She closed her magazine, but
did not look at him. "I'd rather not talk about it."
"Why not?" Matthew asked.
"I...er..." Rhianna was at a loss. She had never expected to feel so
confused. Here was a man that she had been intimate with, yet barely knew,
and just his presence was enough to throw her. She had to get a handle on
herself or she would be no good at all!
"Why not?" Matthew prompted.
He felt a hard tug on his cuffed hand. "Buddy," said Owen without opening
his eyes, "if the lady doesn't want to talk, then shut up!"
"Sure." Matthew said. He looked over at Rhianna again. She was getting up.
"I'll be right back." she said to her partner and headed forward. She had
two calls to make.
A flight attendant pointed her at the phone and Rhianna found a seat from
which she could call.
The first was to Maine.
"Hello?" answered a voice.
"Geoff? It's me, Rhi!"
"Rhi! It's been a long time little sister!"
"I know Geoff. Is Dad around?" Rhianna asked.
"Out with his buddies. I can tell him you called."
"Sure. I just wanted to say that I've been given another assignment. I might
not make it home again for Christmas."
There was silence on the other end of the phone for a moment. "This will be
the third year in a row." Geoff Summer Jr. said flatly.
"I know, it can't be helped."
"Dad's not going to like this. Thanks for making me tell him."
"I'm sorry. I said it can't be helped." Rhianna had put off making this
call, perhaps too long?
"Jeez...Rhianna, you can't keep letting this happen. Your playing secret
agent woman has really begun to get under Dad's hide."
"It's what I do Geoff. It's what I want to do."
"Yeah, I know. I'm sorry I snapped. I'll tell him."
"Thanks. Tell him I'll try to make it if I can."
"Yeah. I'll tell him."
Geoff hung up and Rhianna felt like a heel. She vowed to find some way to
go home this year. Family had not been a high priority with her lately, and
that had to change.
She dialed her second call.
"Hi," answered the voice she knew well. "You have called me, and in case you
don't remember who I am then you are definitely calling the wrong person.
If you want me to return your message, then you had better leave one." The
answering machine went BEEP, and Rhianna left her message.
"Bart, this is Rhianna. I was just...well, just thinking of you...bye." She
hung up.
"Why did I do that?" she asked herself. She put away the phone and went
back to her seat. Matthew had his eyes closed and Rhianna hoped he was
asleep. She needed to think.

Sheriff Kinkade met them getting off the plane and introduced himself.
Rhianna introduced him to Owen and told him that Owen would be handling the
investigation as far as anything off the mountain was concerned. That was
fine by Kinkade.
The group left the public areas and descended to a security only entrance
with a couple of airport cops. Once out of sight of the public one of them
produced the standard cuffs and chain set used to transport prisoners.
"You've got to be kidding!" cried Matthew. "I'm on your side, fellas!"
"You do as we say, not as you want!" Owen told him.
"Rhianna! Tell him to back off. There's no need for these you know that!"
Matthew appealed to her.
With a small smile Rhianna took the offered chains and locked them on him
herself. Matthew stood in silence while she did so, waiting until she was
crouched at his feet locking on his ankle cuffs.
"Now this position is familiar." he said quietly.
Rhianna blushed and stood up. "Let's go."
The agents, the prisoner and the Sheriff all piled into the Sheriff's police
cruiser, Owen climbing in back with the now shackled Matthew. The airport
was soon left behind and the group spoke little on the drive into the
mountains.
Rhianna thought the view very beautiful, the towering peaks poking their
heads into the clouds. The fact that they were all covered in white show
did nothing to ruin their splendor, although she was grateful for the heat
coming from the car's heater.
They eventually reached a small town nestled between several mountains, and
Sheriff Kinkade pulled the car behind his office.
Tethered to a pole were three horses, and Matthew smiled.
Inside they found Paul Anderson waiting for them. Paul again hugged his
brother, although Matthew couldn't hug back, and Rhianna found herself
comparing the two men. Paul was definitely older, although Rhianna couldn't
say for sure how much the weathering on his face was due to age and how much
was due to being outdoors a lot. Matthew looked taller, but Paul was wider
in the shoulders. There was definitely a family resemblance, both had the
same nose and their eyes were very similar. Rhianna was also a little
curious about Paul's clothing. He looked like the typical mountain man in
his leather outfit. To one side Rhianna noticed a fur lined cloak that also
had to be his.
"How about these chains now, huh?" Matthew asked after he and Paul parted.
Kinkade and Owen looked over at Rhianna, who nodded. Kinkade did the
honors.
After introductions were made, they all sat down to talk about what was
going to happen next. Rhianna was tired. It was early morning now and she
had been up for a long time after a rather restless night of self bondage
frustration.
She let Owen take the lead as they discussed the gathered evidence and what
had yet to be done.
Nothing new was offered however and they eventually broke up.
"We need to talk about your cover." Matthew said to her.
Rhianna stifled a yawn. "Sure."
She, Paul and Matthew went into another interview room to talk in private.
"Here's how we have planned it." said Matthew, taking charge. "No one at the
compound except Paul and Gabe knows where I've been for the last two years.
I asked Paul not to tell anyone."
"Okay, I can understand that." said Rhianna.
"Our cover is that I just showed up suddenly as I usually do and that this
time I'm bringing home to meet the family my new wife. You. We're not
planning on staying, just visiting, which again will be no surprise to the
families, although my finally getting married will be." he said with a
smile.
"Have you ever brought other women here?" Rhianna asked.
"No. I wouldn't dare. The reason you have to be my wife is that relations
out of marriage are pretty well frowned upon at home. If I was to show up
with a girlfriend, they would not appreciate it in the slightest."
"What? What happened to the loose morality you were telling me about?"
"Our Morals aren't loose, Agent Summer." Paul said sternly. "We live by a
strict moral code that is different than what you are used to. While some
of it may seem loose to you, it is very well defined and controlled."
"Sorry." Rhianna said.
"This isn't a hippie commune, Rhianna." Matthew admonished her.
"No offense intended." Rhianna said, appeasing both men.
Matthew took a deep breath. "Anyway. What will happen when we get there is
that you and I will meet our family, to...er...arrange our wedding."
"I thought you said we were already married?" Rhianna said.
"We are, out here. Not at the compound. The families don't recognize
outside marriage, at least not to the point where a married couple can sleep
together. They will assume that the reason I am bringing you back is so that
we can get married under their eyes and truly be a married couple. Until
then we will not be staying with each other."
Rhianna smiled. She had been worried about that part.
"Try to contain your disappointment." Matthew said wryly.
"I'm sorry. So, where will I stay, and how do I get to talk to everyone?"
"You'll stay with my family." Paul said. "And you should have free rein of
the compound during the daytime to talk to whoever you like."
"Just during the daytime?"
"Another rule. It will all be explained to you."
Matthew got up from his seat. "You'll like it up there Rhianna, trust me."
Rhianna looked away. There was that appeal for trust again.
"We need to get going soon, the weather is moving in." Paul said.
"I was hoping to get some sleep first." Rhianna told him.
"No time. We need to be up the mountain before the weather opens up. Or we
may loose a couple of days waiting it out here."
"Okay. I'll get my things and we can go."
"Er..." Matthew said.
"What?"
"Your things. None of it is coming up. Not even your clothes. None of that
stuff is allowed up there."
"I'm not going out there naked!"
"No, not naked. Paul brought down all the clothes you need. It's just that
modern clothing is not allowed. Only stuff made in the compound."
"Oh." Rhianna sighed. "Okay, where can I change?"

Rhianna shifted uncomfortably on the back of the horse. She was having a
hard time getting used to the animal, to the leather and fur clothing she
had been given, and the cold.
She found it hard to believe that only the day before she had been in sunny
Miami where she had gone around in not much more than shorts and a bikini
top.
Wear that now and she'd be dead in minutes. As she rode she wondered how
June had felt, running around out here in the snow completely naked, no
protection from the freezing wind.
It was beyond her imagination.
She shifted again as she huddled under her cloak. Her horse was second in
line, it's reins being held by Paul who led the way. Behind her rode
Matthew. He had looked like a different person in his leather gear once
they were dressed. Like some barbarian king. Rhianna thought it suited him
well. He looked good in it.
Rhianna resisted the urge to look back at him.
Ahead Rhianna saw what looked like a high wall made of wooden timbers slowly
appear through the trees. As they approached she made it out to be at least
twelve feet high.
Matthew rode up beside her.
"The wall goes all the way around the compound. They built it decades ago to
keep Bear and Mountain Lion out. Believe me. Having it there is worth the
peace of mind you get knowing you can walk around inside day or night
without fear of being attacked."
Rhianna nodded, too cold and tired to really care.
They rode up to a gate in the wall and Paul got off his horse to open it.
No sentries at least, thought Rhianna, then she wondered what they would
need them for.
Paul took his horse's reins and led them all into the compound, and Rhianna
found herself in a different place.
