The Governor's Wife
by Victor Bruno

Part Sixteen

One hour later, back in his gaol cell, Frank Lander contemplated
a bleak future. Either he endured weeks and maybe months of pain
and humiliation at the hands of the Governor's wife or he risked
being charged with an offence he did not commit and then having
his sentence increased. Possibly for life.

Either alternative was too hideous to contemplate. Was there no
way out?

Suicide, of course. But Frank had no stomach for that. He was a
relatively young and healthy man with a life still before him.
What then? Perhaps he could throw himself on the Governor's
mercy. Perhaps, if he actually showed the Governor what ravages
his wife had committed upon his person, he would find some
sympathy. That, in fact, his story would actually be believed.

The more Frank Lander thought about this, the more he liked the
idea. Surely the Governor, in his official capacity, would see
reason. There would be the evidence before his very eyes.
Evidence that his wife was a vicious sadist, simply amusing
herself with a prisoner. Hettie Page might accuse him of rape....
but there would be no real evidence of that. Frank's mind glowed
as hotly as his weal-striped bottom at the thought of escaping
further visits to that dread house.

Another and worse thrashing?

Oh no .... oh no!

Another day of back breaking toil?

No .... no .... no!

Another day of utter degradation?

Oh no .... he simply couldn't stand it .... enough was enough!

Thus Frank Lander resolved to risk all on a visit to the Governor
on the following day.

Yet, having made this resolve, Frank Lander spent a sleepless
night. Not only was he in constant pain but there was a nagging
fear at the risks he was running. How would the Governor react
when his wife was accused and exposed? He might turn very nasty
and, after all, Frank was still a prisoner in his hands. Maybe
he'll murder me to cover the evidence, thought Frank in a sudden
surge of panic in the middle of the night.

Above all, how would Hettie Page react when she was confronted
with her misdeeds?

It was a labyrinth of agonising possibilities through which Frank
Lander groped his way blindly and hopelessly. A prison within a
prison ....

"PRISONER 808, SIR. You granted permission for an interview."

The Guard's voice was harsh and flat. Unsympathetic,
uninterested. Typical of his kind. Frank Lander stood beside him,
in front of the Governor's desk, trembling inwardly and now
wishing he could escape from the predicament in which he had put
himself.

In the cold light of day, it seemed madness to throw himself on
the mercy of such implacable authority. When in danger, those in
power closed ranks. They would never be faulted. Always it was
people like him who carried the can. The weak and the helpless.

Oh God, why had he done it?

Frank Lander's mind raced wildly. He would make up some other
reason for having asked for this interview. Yes .... yes .... he
must! Otherwise they'd crush him.

Governor Page looked up from the papers on his desk. Suet-faced,
hard-eyed .... yet shifty-eyed .... coarse and brutal. It was a
face Frank had learned to hate. And learned easy.

"808, eh?" said the Governor, with something like a sneer in his
voice. "Been on domestic duties in my home, ain't you?"

"Yes .... Sir," answered Frank weakly.

"Speak up!" barked the Guard at Frank's elbow.

"Yes, Sir," repeated Frank.

The Governor nodded at the Guard. "O.K.", he said. "I'll handle
this."

"Very good, Sir ...."

Clump .... clump .... about turn and away. It was all very
military. And all very ridiculous. They were all just brutes in
uniform, pretending to be good citizens just doing their duty.
But let a couple of them get you alone in a bare cell .... a
couple who'd been detailed to work you over because you'd been
getting out of line .... then you'd see just what good citizens
they were. Crunching fists smashing your head against the wall,
boots in the balls robbing you of your manhood. They loved it.
They were sadists. And there was nothing you could do about it.
They knew it. And that made them love it even more.

Worst of all. No one would ever really know exactly what went on
in a gaol like Oakhampton. It was cover up all the way .... and a
con was never believed.

Frank Lander shivered. Yes, he must be mad coming to the Governor
with such a tale. True as it was.

"Yes, 808?"

The beady brown eyes were hard upon him and Frank almost panicked
and ran from the room. Sweat burst out all over his body and he
had a desire to urinate.

"Well, what is it, 808?"

The Governor's face was sour. Tired and brooding. The lines at
the corner of his mouth, drooping down, looked as if they had
been etched out with an engraver's knife.

"I .... er .... I h-have a complaint, Sir" Frank heard himself
saying.

Christ, I've committed myself, he thought in an anguished dread!
Now I'm done for ....

"Yes?"

Impassive, uncaring. So ignorant, yet so powerful.

"It .... it's about my .... er .... my duties in your h-home,
Sir...."

"Well?"

"I .... er .... I .... d-don't want to do them any more, Sir.
Prefer ordinary prison duties, Sir."

The Governor didn't really have any eyebrows; just a kind of
grizzled ridge. But if he had he would have raised them at that
moment.

"Since when have you had any say around here, 808?"

"N-Never, Sir ...."

"That's right. So when you're assigned a duty, you carry it out.
So get on with it. O.K.?"

Frank Lander gulped. The sweat was now running freely from him.
All over it seemed. His hands were trembling and his mouth was
twitching. In that moment he made perhaps the bravest decision of
his life.

"I .... I refuse, Sir."

There .... it was done!

Governor Page put his hands flat on the desk. His features
remained stony. Then the tip of his tongue ran over his pale pink
upper lip.

"Refuse?"

"Yes, Sir...."

Having taken the plunge, Frank Lander suddenly felt bold. It was
the boldness of the mad; the boldness of those who had lost all
and thus had no more to lose.

"You asking for 28 days Solitary?"

Frank blanched inwardly and outwardly. He'd once had seven days
in the can and that had been enough.

"N-No .... Sir ...."

The Governor stood up, fat yet broad and powerful. All-powerful.

"And I could always get a couple of the boys to work you over
first ...."

"Please, Sir .... for God's sake no Sir. I don't mean any
offence, Sir. Just want to come off domestic duties, Sir."

Governor Page's slobby mouth slipped in a momentary leer.

"You don't say! And why, 808? Why, might I ask?"

It was the crunch question. And Frank knew it. At the same time,
he knew he had to answer it. If he was going to get off the hook.
Or, rather, get off two hooks.

"It's your wife, Sir," he made himself say at last. "She treats
me bad. Very bad."

The plump, middle-aged man in the grey uniform sat down again,
face still impassive. For a moment or two the fingers drummed on
the desk.

"That your complaint, 808?"

"Y-Yes .... Sir ...." Frank's heart was thumping and he felt
rather sick. Perhaps the Guard would be called back. So that he
could be held while the Governor thumped those great fists again
and again on to his face and into his belly. Till he was
senseless.

Was Hettie's cane worse than that?

Surely not!

Yes .... he really must be mad to be standing here like he was!

Then Governor Page stood up again.

Now .... it's going to happen .... now!

The portly figure strode over to the door. Then he locked it.

He doesn't need any help, thought Frank desperately. He's going
to smash me to pulp himself. Just for the fun of it.

Then the Governor was back.

"Show me." he said. The podgy white face was impassive as ever.

For a moment, Frank was puzzled. "Show you?" he queried.

"Come on 808, get your pants down ...."

Suddenly the truth hit Frank. Governor Page knew. He was not
going to be shaken by any revelations about his wife. Her sadism
was an open book to him .... and, seemingly, he accepted it.

Frank Lander fumbled at his belt and pushed his trousers down.
Then his underpants. How strange it was, doing that in the
Governor's office!

"Pull up your shirt ...."

It was just the same sort of order he got from the man's wife. It
was all quite incredible. The Governor was behind him now.

"Hmmmm ...." he heard him say, "she enjoyed that, I reckon. But
not you, I guess."

"N-No, Sir ...."

"Can't take it eh?"

"I.... I guess not ...."

"You'll be surprised how quickly you'll toughen up. The first few
hidings are always the worst."

It occurred to Frank that the Governor was speaking from
experience. Which was almost unbelievable. A great bully of a man
like him submitting to a woman? No .... surely not. Perhaps he
was speaking from the experience of others. Previous cons who'd
gone through Hettie's hands.

"You .... you mean .... you're going to let it go on?" asked
Frank.

"Sure I am." The Governor was cold and matter-of-fact.

"But .... but it's illegal. Against prison regulations. Cons
can't be beaten these days."

Governor Page guffawed. "Don't be stupid, 808. You know men here
are often done over in some quiet cell. What's a hiding from a
woman compared with that"

A hiding from a woman was no joke, thought Frank. He was
beginning to get scared again. He had thought coming to the
Governor was an escape route. Now it seemed another dead end.

"You can't help me then?"

Governor Page shook his head. "Pull up your pants, 808. No .... I
can't. Ain't got no option but to let it go on."

"But .... you're the Governor ...."

"She's my governor, 808. Got a hold on me that woman. Can't tell
you about that, of course. But she's got me truly by the balls.
Why, man, I've had my arse far worse striped than yours."

Frank could hardly believe his ears. Yet the Governor was
obviously speaking the truth.
