                       WELCOME TO JOHN DARK REPOSTS

1) What's going on here anyway?
2) The reposts for next week.
3) Getting the most out of the reposts.
                                ===========

          What's going on here anyway?

What I am trying to do is to satisfy both authors and readers as
nearly as possible.
For the readers: That means that I won't post anything that is in an
unreadable format, nor anything which I haven't read myself and wouldn't
want to.
That means that I am trying to keep all files shorter than 30K as that
is the length which gives almost nobody problems.
That means that I post story codes in almost all cases. The story
codes on the subject line are my own, not necessarily those (if any) that
the author used. This gives some degree of consistency, and I try to
follow the story code FAQ.
That means that I will post relatively few incomplete stories, and
only those where I believe that the section stands by itself. These should
be labeled "part" on the subject line.

For the authors: That means that I won't post any story unless I am
fairly well convinced that the author welcomes reposting. Right now, I am
sticking with stories which give an author's disclaimer and those stories
whose authors I have actually contacted.
That means that I try to publish a disclaimer from the author
expressing his copyright claim. The _next_ reposter won't have to guess.
That means that I keep the author's name and the title that he gave
the story close to the body of story.

Right now, I plan to repost five files a day. One of these will be
one chapter in the marvelous serial "The Adventures of Me and Martha Jane."
This story is complete, but it was originally posted as a long serial. I
think that it reads better this way.

                            ==================

          The reposts for next week.
Remember that these are the scheduled posting dates. The stories may
land on your news reader in minutes, in days, or never.

As mentioned, I'll continue the classic "The Adventures of Me and Martha
Jane." This coming week will include parts 5B to 6C.

Getting the most out of the reposts.

The mention of consolidating chapters above leads naturally into my
compromise between the goals of delivering stories in precisely the form in
which authors posted them and giving readers something reasonable to
download.

If the story is too long to post in one chunk, I use two numbering
systems. ("The Adventures of Me and Martha Jane," already uses a
complicated system. I follow it exactly.) Anything with numbers within
the quotation marks represents the author's separations. If I am posting
an entire chapter or several chapters of a work in one file that is all
that you see within those quotation marks. If the author doesn't provide
breaks, I break the story into sections and use _capital_ letters to
designate those sections. If the author uses chapters which are still too
long, I break the chapters into sections and designate those sections with
the author's chapter number and _small_ letters.

Generally, I use "part" or "chapter" (or whatever the author uses) to
designate the author's divisions. I use "section" to designate my
divisions.

In the square brackets at the end, I use precisely the number of
sections into which the story is broken. It has everything to do with the
particular method of posting, and nothing to do with the author's
breakdown.
