Heaven Sent
by Chili Peeler

PROLOGUE

>From the June 3, 1996 issue of Time magazine:

A SHOT ACROSS THE EARTH'S BOW
Last week's heavenly near-miss was a record. Are we ready for the next
incoming asteroid?

"Early last week, [a] celestial interloper whizzed by Earth, missing the
planet by 280,000 miles - a hairbreadth in astronomical terms. Perhaps a
third of a mile across, it was the largest object ever observed to pass that
close to Earth."
"[It] has been calculated that if the asteroid had struck Earth, it would have
hit at 58,000 m.p.h. The resulting explosions, scientists estimate, would
have been in the 3,000-to-12,000 megaton range...like taking all of the U.S.
and Soviet nuclear weapons, putting them in a pile and blowing them all
up."
"Neighboring space teems with many more...Near Earth Objects, asteroids
and comets with orbits that pass close to Earth's path around the sun.
More than 100 NEOs big enough to cause the kind of worldwide disaster
that wiped out the dinosaurs...have already been identified and charted.
[The] Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, notes that an
estimated 2,000 more of these mountain-size hulks may be lurking
undetected out there."
"The world, however, still seems largely unconcerned with the danger
posed by large bodies hurtling in from space, despite the spectacle two
years ago of Asteroid Shoemaker-Levy 9 riddling the planet Jupiter with
mammoth explosions."

Chapter 1

July 13, 2002 was a very bad day. That was the day the world learned
of its own impending demise.

Kelly Farento was in the kitchen of the family's summer retreat home
in upstate New York finishing the preparation of a lunch salad. The
temperature outside was in the low 80's and forecast to get even hotter
over the weekend.
She loosened another button on her cotton blouse and flapped the
opening to stir some cooler air across the top of her bosum. The central air
conditioning unit had gone on the fritz shortly after they had arrived for
their
three week vacation. Getting someone out to repair the unit had been
fruitless to that point.
Still, she wasn't going to complain; nine months ago, she didn't have a
pot to piss in. Nine months ago she had been single, in debt up to her
eyeballs and living in a one bedroom apartment.
Then, her employer had asked her out to dinner. That, in itself, had not
been all that surprising; she was, after all, a fairly attractive woman.
Growing up, Kelly Hayes she had always considered herself an ugly
duckling; she had been gawky and overweight. Then, the summer of her
junior year of college, her body had changed rather dramatically.
Her face had thinned, leaving her with noticeable cheek bones and a
delicate chin under a full mouth. Her breasts, which had also lost mass,
had turned out to be one of her favorite features; "nice handfuls" as her
husband liked to describe them. She was always watching her weight,
keeping an eye on the little bit of a tummy that she could never seem to
lose and hoping that she could keep her ass in her 36 inch jeans.
Hank liked to tell her that she would have looked right at home in a
porch scene from a TV show called Hee Haw. Kelly had never seen the
show but he described it as being a bunch of gorgeous looking hillbilly
women laying around on a front porch with a bunch of ugly hillbilly men not
paying any attention to them.
After blossoming, she had pretty much squandered her good looks on
a series of loser men - men who had taken her nowhere. It had erked her
that she had not been able to find a man that wanted to really care for her.
She'd ended up in Chicago, found a job as a secretary at a small
computer company and settled into a monotonous routine of living from
payday to payday. The company created some new technological wonder
in the computer field and went public, making the president of the
company, her boss, a very rich man.
And he was a good looking guy. Only problem was he was happily
married, had kids, etc.
She worked there another two years.
Then, his wife got sick..very sick. A cancer that spread very quickly.
She had died five months later.
Her boss asked her to dinner four months after his wife's death. Dinner
led to more dinners and then to a mutual desire to take it further. He was
great in bed and apparently he thought the same of her. His courtship
lasted four months and she found herself being asked to marry him.
Ms. Kelly Hayes became Mrs. Henry Farento and she suddenly found
herself in a world of summer homes and winter homes and matching
Mercedes Benzs.....
Everything was perfect with the exception of a frosty relationship with
his two teenage children; they were not over the death of their mother and
saw her as an outsider, someone trying to replace their dead mother.
Kelly felt like she was caught between two worlds; at 27, she was only
seven years older than her husband's son and her husband was seventeen
years older than she was. Henry projected her as someone that his kids
had to respect and Kelly would have been just as happy to be treated like
and older sister.
The high twitched squeal of her seventeen year old stepdaughter,
Joanna, came through the open kitchen window, followed by a large
splash. Kelly looked out through the window down to the lakeshore.
Her husband stood on the boat dock looking down at a spreading
series of circles in the water. Then she saw Joanna's head appear from
beneath the water, hands smoothing her wet hair away from her face.
"That's not fair, Dad. I wasn't ready," his daughter complained and
laughed at the same time.
"There are no rules in King of the Dock!" her husband, Henry, or Hank
as he liked to be called, proclaimed as he raised his arms above his 6' 1"
frame. Poor Joanna at 5' 7" and 95 pounds, a very slender girl, really didn't
stand a chance in their game but they had been playing it for years
apparently.
Her husband dove into the lake as Joanna pulled herself up out of the
water, stood on the dock, and began rearranging her bikini bottom.
'I keep telling her to wear a one-piece but she won't listen,' Kelly
thought as she watched Joanna pull her bikini bottom back into place
around her derriere. 'That's because you're the evil stepmother.'
Joanna had inherited her dead mother's good looks and, at 17, had
already been modeling for 2 years. Most of her work had been for
magazines like Teen Beat and Seventeen and some small catalogues but
she had signed with new modeling company and after they got back from
their vacation, Joanna was going to be going to New York.
Joanna had a intense, distinctive face. She had classic bone structure
with a high forehead and beautiful cheekbones that funnelled down into a
narrow chin and a small mouth with thin lips. Her nose looked a little
squashed, sort of pug, but again that look made her stand out. Her
piercing hazel eyes seemed to sparkle right out of her pictures.
Joanna's legs were long and gorgeous and seemed to have developed
faster than the rest of her coltish body. She had a super small waist and a
torso that always showed a trace of her ribcage. Her breasts were small,
high-riding swells.
Her Lady Godiva-like naturally straight brown hair was down to the
small of her back. She had highlighted it with some lighter tones and it
contrasted with her tanned skin. She either pulled her hair straight back
and braided it in a long row down her back or she parted her hair to the left
and swooped it over her head, letting some of the hair lie in front of her
right shoulder, partially covering the right side of her face.
As Kelly turned back to finish slicing a carrot into her salad, her new
stepson, Jim, came bounding down the back staircase into the kitchen. He
immediately stuck his head into the refrigerator in search of more
sustenance; the boy ate like a horse.
Jim was a wrestler at Notre Dame and was constantly working out to
get stronger and at the same time trying to keep exactly 185 lbs on his 5'
10" muscular frame. He was the spitting image of his father; dark, naturally
curly hair, big-boned, sort of cocky.
"There's meatloaf down in the bottom container," Kelly said, trying to
be helpful.
He grabbed the covered meatloaf but didn't offer any thanks for the
suggestion, just grabbed a loaf of bread with the other hand and brought
both to the kitchen island counter where she was standing.
'You're welcome, you little shit!' Kelly thought.
Flustered, she dropped her fork on the floor as he was closing the
bread bag. She bent beside him to pick it up and saw it had left a glob of
dressing on the floor.
"Jim, hand me a....' she began as she looked up at her stepson. She
saw Jim sweep his eyes up to the window but she was sure he must have
been looking down a second before....down the front of her partially opened
blouse! He must have had a clear view of the upper swells of her breasts
and the pink bra she was wearing, "....napkin. I've got some dressing on
the floor."
"Sure, here you go." Jim handed one down without looking and went
on preparing his sandwiches. She wiped up the spill and moved off toward
the livingroom with her salad after getting a new fork.
As Jim prepared his sandwiches, Kelly sat down on the livingroom
couch and used the remote to turn on the TV in the entertainment console.
She sat back and flicked through the channels in search of a noon time
news program. The local channel's news was uninteresting; something
about a referendum coming up and local school matters. She flicked to
CNN and put the remote down and began to eat her salad.
CNN was showing a news conference of some sort and the caption at
the bottom of the screen said 'Helsinki, Finland - LIVE' and Kelly half-
listened as she ate her salad. An announcer's voice came in and it caught
Kelly's attention.
". . .you are listening to a live press conference taking place at this
moment in Helsinki. The speaker is Arkady Malatov, renowned Russian
astronomer, who has defected this morning from his homeland. His
startling claim has certainly shocked everyone at the conference and I am
sure, everyone that is listening over our network."
Kelly was paying attention now as the feed from the conference came
back on. Reporters were shouting questions at Malatov, a dumpy, ill-
dressed academician. One reporter won out and his question was
recognized.
"MR. MALATOV, how long has your government known about this?"
Malatov leaned into his microphone and answered in broken English.
"The object...ah, is known for five months."
Again there was a flurry of question shouted.
"Do you think this object is a asteroid? Has it been seen in the past
here on Earth?"
"No, not a asteroid...would have been seen by everyone if
asteroid...asteroid, maybe...I can not say...perhaps. The orbits of these,
ah, bodies may be thousands of years." Malatov threw up his hands
"Why did the Commonwealth of Independent States not disclose this
information sooner?"
      "My government...it, for reasons....withholded the information. I
have...
ah, reason to believe that the information was withholded so my country
could construct, ah, underground shelters."
The conference exploded into more shouted questions. Kelly realized
she had come into the conference after some announcement and they
were talking about a asteroid and shelters. Her stomach began to hurt.

* * * * * * * * * *

'Dad sure did all right for himself,' Jim admitted as he mashed the top
piece of bread on his sandwich. There was something about Kelly that
really turned him on.
She wasn't a knockout, per se. Her face was pretty, not stunning. Her
mouth had a prominate upper lip and it always seemed to be hanging open
like she had to breath through it all the time. Her blonde shoulder-length
usually tucked behind her ears. Her tits, once totally exposed, were
probably incredibly seductive; the quick look he'd gotten a minute ago had
just engrained the word SUCCULENT on his mind. She had a nice pair of
legs; not fashion model thin like his sister's but they seemed to jiggle all
over with a little babyfat. And there was the way she carried herself, some
of that Southern belle attitude.
He didn't want to not like her.... but he did. He just wished he could be
sure that she wasn't a golddigger...and that his father hadn't been sleeping
with her before his mother died. He'd never spoken to his Dad about it,
obviously, but the speed which he'd gotten re-married had left him and his
sister wondering.
He tried to dispel the image of his stepmother's cleavage and turned
his mind to females he actually had a chance with. The quick view down
Kelly's blouse only reminded him how much he wanted to get back to
civilization and all those feminine distactions.
'Only a week to go and then it's back to Chicago. Still plenty of time
left in the summer to chase some skirt,' Jim silently hoped.
While he enjoyed all the outdoor activities that the all-surrounding
Adirondack Mountains offered, the nightlife was nil. It was over a hundred
and fifty miles as the crow flies to Lake Placid. Their lakefront home was
accessible by a dirt logging road and there was maybe ten other homes on
the long lake. Getting away from it all was an understatement.
"Jim!" Kelly called from the livingroom.
      "Yeah?"
"Go get your father for me."
      "He's swimming."
"I know he's swimming. Tell him I need to see him right away. Go!"
Sighing in exasperation, he put down the sandwich he'd been getting
ready to bite into and went out the front door to get Dad for his bossy
stepmother.

* * * * * * * * * *

Kelly focused back in on the TV as she heard Jim go out the front door
to get Hank.
"DR. MALATOV! Dr. Malatov, do you have any hard evidence to
support your claims?"
"Evidence which I have with me...ah, is top secret. Impossible for me
to bring total data, reports. I have given to Dr. Osterman...a disk with
calculations. Certainly, location of asteroid.....others can verify.
Calculated
through computers in my country leave...no doubt."
"WHEN WILL, when will the impact occur? Where will it strike?"
"It was sighted too long, ah, to late to have hopes of stopping. It will
hit
in August the 9th! Where? .impossible to make this observation."
Just then, Hank came in with a towel wrapped around his waist.
"Hank! Come here! Listen to this, it's..it's crazy. This guy is talking
about a asteroid that's going to hit the Earth!"
"What?! " her husband said as he came over to stand by her. Both
watched as the next question was shouted.
"DR. MALATOV! DOCTOR! What should people be doing to try to
prepare?" another reporter shouted over the others.
The cameras tightened in on the flabbergasted astronomer. His
flustered state suddenly turned into anger.
"YOU ARE NOT LISTENING! The asteroid..it...the mass..and the
velocity...these are too great! Shelter nowhere! Any built by my country
will not do any good..the effects of the, ah, meeting, no...collision will be
long-term, years and years..." The conference room was as silent as a
tomb. "There is reason to believe.... to fear...that the world will not
withstand......impact will.... will..." Malatov struggled. "Ah, to cause...end
of civilization as now is."
The press conference dissolved into bedlam, reporters yelling out
questions, flashbulbs going off as Dr. Malatov was wisked from the room
by security personnel and reporters rushed the table.
Joanna and Jim came barreling through the door, laughing and carrying
on. They quieted down when they saw their father holding their teary-eyed
stepmother on the couch.

* * * * * * * * * *

"It's got to be a mistake," Joanna said, getting up from dinner table
where she hadn't done more than pick at her food, "It's a lie."
Supper time had been very quiet as each person tried to grapple with
the fact that their own death might be hurtling down from the sky.
Hank, the analytical thinker, had watched all the news reports and he
had tried to put on a good face but he didn't want any of the family to bury
their heads in the sand about the asteroid.
He knew enough to about politics to be skeptical about the spin
coming from out of Washington; they had nothing to gain by collaborating
any of the facts. Widespread panic would probably destroy a good part of
the country if hope was taken away.
Even he was holding out hope because the thing could go either way.
Take for instance, Malatov. He believed that Malatov believed the
asteroid was going to hit the Earth. Astronomers and astrophysicists
around the world painted Malatov as a respected member of the scientific
community. All who knew him believed that he would not have defected
over something he wasn't absolutely sure of. They pointed out he had left
behind his family to bring his message to the rest of the world.
The old Russian government denied having kept the information a
secret; they claimed the asteroid had only recently been discovered and
there was no mass shelter building underway to try to save a portion of
their population. They even brought forth medical records that showed
Malatov was having emotional problems.
Other scientists that worked at Malatov's facility could not be found by
Western journalists working in the CIS; it was speculated that they were
being hidden. This only undermined the Soviet's position.
"Come on, Joanna," Hank said, getting up and hugging her, "Baby,
everything's going to be all right. I know you're scared....we all are. But
we're not sure this thing is even going to hit the Earth. It might all be some
big mistake. So don't give up hope. We haven't got all the facts."
"Let's go see if they're saying anything different," Jim said, getting up
from the table and heading toward the livingroom.
"You guys go ahead," Kelly said with a weak smile, "I'll clean up and
be in in a few minutes.
"All right, thanks, honey." Hank kissed her and went with his daughter
into the livingroom where Jim had CNN on. It seemed to be the best source
for information. Somehow they had got the only cameras at the initial
Malatov press conference.
Kelly put the dishes in the dishwasher and soaked the roasting pan in
some hot water and went into the living room. Hank was sitting on the
couch with his arm around his daughter and Kelly schrunched against him
on the other side.
"Who's that?" she asked. On the screen a man, squinting in the sun,
was being interviewed outside of an observatory.
"He's works at an observatory in Australia," Hank said. "Apparently
they spotted the asteroid also....listen."

"....this information be useful?" the interviewer ended.
"Yes, certainly it will..uh, we have a full ten days of observations of
the
body which certainly can be used to better determine its path....we had
been able to determine that there was a possiblity of a close approach by
the object. Malatov and his people had been plotting it for far longer but at
least, our data may be of some assistance in verifying what Malatov is
claiming."
"When do you think they will have a definitive answer on the asteroid's
true path?" the reporter asked. "
"Well, uh, I would have thought they would have had an answer before
now...again, we don't know what information Malatov has given to the
Americans and the European governments...we sent our data to Unsel and
his team at Cambridge almost six hours ago. Since they're using the
Crays and the object is so close in astronomical terms, I would think they
have the answer."
"Do you think that the fact that we have not been notified has any
meaning?"
"I hope it doesn't mean bad news obviously...it may be that they are
double and triple checking the calculations, I don't know."
"Thank you, Dr. Halvorsen....this has been Harold Leonhard reporting
from Falmouth, Australia...we return you now to the CNN News Center in
Atlanta."

"He's got a point," Hank said. "If they're using the Crays, they probably
do know already.....hell, they can probably tell you where it'll hit."
"So you think it's going to hit?" Jim asked.
"If they knew it wasn't going to hit, they sure wouldn't be keeping it a
secret," Henry said gloomily.
"Dad, would they even tell us if it was going to hit?" Jim said.
It was a good point. Hank had been mulling that over most of the day.
If it was true, if it was going to hit, the news would devastate
everything
that currently was, rip the fabric of society to shreds. Things would get real
ugly.
But not giving people the time to prepare would be equally as bad.
Withholding the information, letting people continue going to work, wasting
their time on immaterial items when they could be with their families, the
religious not being given the chance to really get right with whatever God
they prayed to...
      Which was worse?

* * * * * * * * * *

"All circuits are busy. Please try your call later." Kelly hung the phone
up, hugged her knees to her chest and leaned back against the headboard
of her bed.
It had been impossible to get an outside phone line since the news had
broke the previous afternoon. The press conference had gone out all over
the country, all over the world. The phone system was just not able to take
the huge volume of calls as families tried to reach each other.
Kelly had been trying to reach her older brother, Lester. He lived down
in New York City and eventhough he was a shiftless, amoral asshole, she
was terribly worried about him.
The President had spoken to the nation earlier, almost 24 hours after
the Malatov press conference. He had urged citizens to remain calm and
then had lay out what they had learned.
It was believed that the object was an asteroid that had been pushed
out of its orbit beyond Mars. That was how they explained it not being
discovered until it was so close.
Yes, there was a chance that the Earth and the object were on a
collision course. But he stressed that it was not a certainty; the object
was too close in to get a definite trajectory and he emphasized that it the
information Malatov had brought could have been made intentionally
misleading, they in fact, could be lies that were meant to disrupt the
world's "natural order."
A nation-wide curfew had been ordered, the national guard and select
army units were hitting the streets to enforce the sundown curfew and to
protect property. Kelly had seen early scenes of sporadic rioting taking
place downstate as panic and meanness consumed a portion of the
populous.
The President had ended his speech asking for prayers and soul
searching, to form a united front against the unknown.
"Honey?" Kelly looked up at her husband who had come out of their
master bath. "I think we ought to forget about trying to reach anyone by
phone...at least for tonight. Getting through would be like winning the
lottery."
"I know," Kelly conceded, "I'm just worried about Lester. I wish I knew
he was okay."
"Honey, we talked about that," Hank said as he turned off the light in
the bathroom and walked naked to the bedroom window. "He's probably on
his way up here. People are going nuts down there....Lester's no dummy,
he'll get out of the city."
He opened the window several inches to get some cool night air
circulating in the room and then lay down on the bed beside her.
"It's safe up here and people know we're here...Anne was in Detroit last
I heard. I bet she's already on her way. They'll probably both head here.
This is probably the safest place we could be."
Anne was Hank's sister and probably Kelly's best friend in the family.
They had really hit it off, unlike picture company and she was constantly
travelling. At 35, she was still unmarried her relationship with the kids.
Anne was a location scout for a motion which surprised Kelly. But her
career seemed to come first.
"I hope you're right," she whispered as she molded her body to his.
She tried to draw strength from his muscular frame and it helped. He
hugged her and moved his hands soothingly up and down her back.
Then slowly his left hand slid down over her tush and onto her bare leg.
After a few strokes, it rode up her leg and under her nightshirt, pulling the
material up as his hand moved onto her hip. Kelly kissed his hairy chest to
show that she too needed to make love.
Their sex life was everything she had ever wanted, both in quantity and
quality. Hank's boundless enthusiasm was understandable; his first wife's
attitude toward sex was very conservative and rather than look for variety
outside the marriage, Hank had been faithful and contented himself with
watching his family grow.
Kelly had to smile, thinking about the first time she and Hank had gone
to bed. After the usual first exploration of each other's bodies, she had
gone down on him and he'd literally flipped; it had been his first blowjob in
almost 20 years.
Hank's beefy hand reached further up under her nightshirt and cupped
her right breast. Kelly cooed as he rubbed his palm on her awakening
nipple, his hand moving her soft mammary back and forth.
Her nightshirt had hooked in the crock of his elbow, leaving her hips
bare. She pressed her lap against his as she moved a leg over his. She
could feel his growing manhood pressing against her tummy.
She dropped her head back and looked into her husband's eyes briefly
before moving her mouth to kiss his, conveying that she felt the same way.
They each tilted their head in opposite directions, naturally fitting their
mouths together, her tongue pressing into his mouth as his fingers pulled
on her thimble-thick nipple.

* * * * * * * * * *

'God, I love this girl,' Hank thought as he released her hard nipple and
slid his left hand down her torso, down between her parted legs. His fingers
ran into her muff, pressed through it into the folds of her silky womanhood.
Kelly gave a little squeak into his mouth and broke their heavy kiss.
"Mmmm, baby, that feels good.....I want you to make love to me," she
whispered as her hands moved down and encircled his half-stiff organ.
She gripped it like a baseball bat handle and began tugging on it, her
slender hands finding plenty of purchase on his long length, bringing him to
full arousal almost immediately.
"God," he gasp as he moved over her, between her long soft legs, "Put
it in, Kelly."
He felt her move the end of his erection into her soft snatch, too high
to be the entrance to herself. He watched her pretty face twitch as she
used his manhood against the sensitive button of her clit, drawing his
blood-engorged crown back and forth, getting herself wet enough to take
him. He pushed into her hands and the bottom of his cock squashed
against her clit and then slid upward.
"Ooooh, Hank, mmmmmmm," she trilled as she positioned him again
and again over her joybutton and he prodded it lewdly. Finally, she looked
at him, her mouth hanging open in excitement and she moved him down to
the mark. "Here, Hank, aahhh, right here!"
He filled her with his long hardness and both sucked in their breaths at
the delicious feeling of being one.
Hank didn't wait for Kelly to remove her nightshirt; he began pumping
deeply into his young wife's remarkably tight womanhood as her hands
gripped his lower back.
All thoughts of the asteroid left both of them as they made love.
