SYNOPSIS: A husband and wife watch as two strangers are breaking up.

			[ People Watching ]

After my wife and I left the restaurant, we went to Pioneer Courthouse
Square to sit and watch people. We held hands, as we often did and we
shared many kisses.

While my wife watched people playing hackey-sack and drinking coffee,
talking, chasing their kids, feeding the pigeons, I watched her. My
wife has a very regal, reserved beauty. She rarely wears makeup and
dresses to kill, without revealing anything. I've often made the
comment that she is the only woman I know who could turn heads without
makeup on and without exposing any skin below the neck.

The fact that she is absolutely brilliant and well versed in the
knowledge of practically everything helps as well. I smiled when she
bit her lip. She always did that when she was deep in thought. I
found it sexy.

My attention suddenly turned elsewhere. I heard a couple quietly
fighting several steps below us. I nudged my wife and pointed to the
couple. Without saying anything to her, she knew what was happening.
We both knew.

They were a young couple. Early twenties. The girl was an attractive
blonde and the boy looked like a college football player. They were
holding hands, but the words they spoke obviously cut away at one
another's heart.

The girl began to cry and her boyfriend tried to put his arm around
her, apologizing and trying to comfort her. She brushed his arm away
and looked at his face. Her lips trembled she tried to speak through
the tears.

The boy ran his hands over his face in frustration and took in a deep
breath. "I'm sorry," he could be heard to say.

The girl replied, "But I love you..."

My wife's hand squeezed at my own and I squeezed back.

The couple hugged and walked away from each other. Each heading in an
opposite direction. My wife and I looked at each other. Neither of
us could really say anything. We just sat, holding hands and looking
at the crowd of people again. After a few minutes, we tired of the
activity. More from our pondering what we had just seen than from
lack of interest in the people-watching.

My wife turned to me as we stood and began to talk.  I stopped her;
kissing her on the lips. She seemed shocked for a moment. "What--"
she began.

"I love you," I assured her.

I squeezed her hand again, gently and we went home.
