Chapter 37

Toby and Amy's days never seemed to end, sometimes. Just as he was
entering his office from putting Clint and Brenda together, the phone rang.
"Hello?"

"Yes, er, my name is Beckwith -- Robert Beckwith. I'm Bobby's dad?"

"Oh. Yes, sir. What can I do for you?"

"Bobby said I should call if I was interested in getting an
invitation to the club he goes to..."

"I see. Well, that's correct, as far as it goes."

"I'm interested in knowing more. Bobby has indicated that you don't
just ask... His mother could present problems for the couple, and I have
some... interest... in how the club works..."

"I see," Toby nodded. "May I ask where you are right now?"

	"My office, downtown."

"How urgent do you think all of this is?"

Robert thought about it. "I really can't say."

"Could you hold for a moment?"

	"Certainly."

Toby went off to find Candace or Abigail -- and ended up with
Candace. "Abby and Janice are going to Doctor Robert's for exams and birth
control," Candace related. "What's up?"

"I've got Bobby Beckwith's dad on the phone and he's asking about
membership. There is something up with him, I think, but I'm not sure what
-- and while you know that I'm virtually running things, most guys won't..."
He went on to explain the conversation.

"Right." Candace nodded. "What's the plan?"

"I thought we might meet him somewhere and sound him out -- you, Amy,
and I."

"Okay. Let's go..." Back in Toby's office, Candace put the phone on
speaker. "May I help you?"

	"My name is..."

"Oh, I have all that, Honey -- the young man who answered the phone
is surprisingly thorough. Could we meet this evening, in a restaurant,
perhaps?"

	"I, um..."

"It might be easily camouflaged from your spouse if we called it a
feeler from a football scout. Bobby certainly understands what is going on,
so he can be your alibi..." Candace said smoothly.

"I like it! I'll contact Bobby..."

"We'll be talking and there will be minors along, so the meeting
should be at a family restaurant -- but discreet. Angelo's?"

	"Very well."

"I'll try to get us a table for six-thirty. Ask for the... Tolliver
party," Candace directed, winking at Toby.

"Perfect!" Robert replied. "We'll be there!" He hung up.

"This has something to do with Trish," Toby guessed.

"I'll get her on the phone," Amy promised, going to her cell while
Candace called the restaurant on the office phone.

The connection established, Trish related, "Bobby's dad likes me --
in fact, I think he likes black girls in general. His mom can be a real
bear, though; I survived meeting her, but only because she was busy climbing
all over Bobby and his dad, I think. She's a little high-strung."

"Do you want to be there?" Amy asked.

"I might distract Bobby's dad -- he's REALLY into black girls!" Trish
replied.

"Okay. Thanks for the insights!" Amy hung up and sat thinking about
it. "Do we bring a black girl?"

"Tabitha's readily available..." Candace mused. "I'll ask her to pop
into the shower..."

"That will work," Toby nodded. Then he called Bobby's cell.

"Yeah, sorry, Pop's got a couple of axes to grind. I don't think I
know it all, but I know he likes black girls..." Bobby chuckled. "Imagine
that..."

"Okay, well, we set up a meet," Toby related. "The excuse is that a
talent scout is checking you out. Your dad will fill you in and we have
reservations for Angelo's -- okay?"

"Yeah, cool! Mom gave us shit all day yesterday. But she doesn't do
football..."

"Is the black girl thing it, do you think?" Toby asked.

"No, I think he has a plan to cool Mom out -- but I don't know what
it is," Bobby related.

"Well, we're officially short on older guys... We'll see. Talk to
you then."

	"See ya!" Bobby hung up.

"Reservations are all set," Candace announced. "So, Toby... What is
going on?"

"Those of us in school are all pointed at Homecoming this week -- but
parents are coming out of the woodwork. Clint's mom, for instance -- Clint
has wanted her done like Fernando or Cindy and Beverly for the longest time.
Then there's Mac's dad and Donna's mom, and Julio Vasquez and Kelly Samuels
going into a rematch. Now we have whatever Bobby's dad is cooking up -- and
whatever it is, it may involve his mother. I'm thinking that this is Adult
Week -- and we might be busy ALL week! Where are we on the construction?"

"We got all of the final inspections today, so Fred is going to move
forward with the stuff we didn't want the building inspectors to see, like
suck booths and the special doors and lighting for the dark rooms. Things
are falling into place."

"Good. Please ask Fred to put a nice, solid door at the bottom of
the root cellar stairs," Toby directed, "one with bolts and locks. That's
our holding cell. I'll wire the surveillance. I think we want a moveable
suck booth in the carriage house, if he has time."

"Okay," Candace nodded. "What do we KNOW is happening?"

"Julio and Kelly tomorrow night," Toby noted. "That's solid,
starting around eight."

Amy pursed her lips. "I wonder if all of the girls have something
nice for the dance?"

"Let's try to hold Wednesday for that," Candace noted. "Tabitha
probably needs something, and I bet Janice does. We can get most of the
mothers that are members and any girl that needs it into the two vans for a
mall trip..."

"That's a really good plan!" Toby enthused. "Maybe you guys can work
on Noreen? I can drive -- that will spell Randy..." Toby needed an excuse
to be there for Noreen's induction.

Candace nodded. "If it works, you'll be around for her initiation --
nothing like setting her up with something guaranteed to be good."

Toby nodded, but he could see THAT as being a two-edged sword. On
the other hand, it was a perfect excuse to pull Rick back into the fold...
Undoubtedly, Teela and Sonya would need something, so he should be
available... A quick touch on her arm and Amy had her marching orders.

"I'm off to get Tabitha!" Candace announced.

                       ----------------------------------

Tabitha's best clothes weren't good enough for Angelo's, but Toby
called his mother and Beth surfaced a nice top and a wraparound skirt that
managed to work for Tabitha. The point that the young black girl needed
further wardrobe was made and reinforced by that hurried episode. Beth, who
had thus far stayed out of the new clubhouse, promised to put in an
appearance and hook up with Terence to discuss dungeon furniture. Toby
suggested that she call Frank, but he and Miriam were busy Tuesday -- Abigail
was cooking dinner for Frank's father, at the very least -- so they laid it
on for Wednesday while the girls were out shopping. Fred would be along to
discuss dungeon construction, and the rest of the Carter clan would probably
be present. Beth planned to suck in Doctor Robert...

Despite the last-minute rushing around, Candace, Tabitha, Toby and
Amy managed to beat the Beckwiths to Angelo's by about five minutes. Candace
handled the initial introductions -- first names only -- starting with
Tabitha, who smiled sweetly at Robert Senior and got a big smile in return.
After the waiter was dispatched with drink orders, Candace began, "How can we
help you?"

Robert blinked. "Should we be discussing these matters in front
of...?" he waved at Toby and Amy and Tabitha.

Candace laughed. "Honey, I'm camouflage." She waved at Toby and
Amy. "They run the club, and they're sharp cookies. Tabitha is here because
we hear that you might be interested..."

Robert Senior was stunned! "You mean...?" He shifted his gaze back
and forth between the trio of younger members.

Toby sat forward and asked, "What do you know and what do you want to
know?"

"I understand Bobby is in a club," Robert said carefully. "The aims
and goals are not clear, but apparently he met Trish there... I understand
that there is serious secrecy for some reason."

Candace, triggered by Toby, sat forward. "Hypothetically, if I were
having sex with Toby, here, I could go to jail, despite the fact that Toby
consented -- and that would generate a media circus. It wouldn't be a
terrible thing, but there are those who would paint it that way."

Robert blinked. "Yeah, I can see that."

"Just about every member has some kind of skeleton in his or her
closet, Mr. Beckwith, placed there deliberately in most cases, in order to
ensure that we as a group can operate as we like without concern for
security. You should be aware that Bobby has such a skeleton, as does his
girlfriend. Before I move past the hypothetical, you need to give your word
that what gets said at this table will not go elsewhere, at the very least,
realizing that they are our hostages to your silence until we initiate you
directly," Candace said smoothly.

"I promise!" Robert affirmed. Amy placed blocks at that point, not
that anyone but Toby was aware of the fact.

"The original purpose of the club was to provide teenage boys and
their mothers with sexual outlets while avoiding incest," Candace explained.
"Toby, here is an original member, as am I. We are not related, so the
hypothetical case I presented you with isn't hypothetical at all. The
original group was very small, but once the boys picked up a certain level of
confidence and competence, young girls took notice and the situation began to
get complicated. We had a security breach that attracted a couple of young
males and their mother at the same time, and have been a little paranoid over
security ever since..."

"Why don't you tell us what you're looking for?" Amy asked.

Robert flicked a glance at Tabitha. "I'm thinking you've guessed one
issue, but it's not the only one. When I was about your age, I fell head
over heels for a black girl -- but back then, there was still no avenue of
approach. Even nowadays, things tend to go the other way... Anyway, I got
over it, sort of, but black girls and black women are forbidden fruit..."

Toby chuckled. "Would it surprise you to learn that Bobby was first
exposed to the club because we had an overabundance of girls in general and
young black girls in particular?"

"Really?" Robert blinked. "How did that happen?"

"The short answer is that we caught a bunch of girls doing something
they shouldn't have been and we absorbed them," Toby replied. "I think Bobby
knows what it was -- I don't feel that it's necessary to go into it." Bobby
nodded, his eyes hooded. "In any case, although most of that overflow is
taken up, one way or another, the girls still have club commitments. Since
in many cases the guys shared the wealth before they settled on a particular
girl, it is customary for them to understand if the club as a whole has a
need to fulfill. We have a number of black women of various ages
available..."

"I'm hearing an undercurrent here, involving Trish..." Robert mused.

"Trish has never been comfortable with that kind of thing and I've
more or less promised Bobby that we would avoid asking for her whenever
possible," Toby replied. "Due to your relationship, we wouldn't offer her in
any case." Both Robert and Bobby relaxed.

"So, what would the unexpected request be?" Amy asked.

"My wife, Arlene, can be... difficult," Robert related diffidently.
"Over time, she's assumed the position of ascendancy in our household, and
she guards her prerogatives jealously. I think it is because she doesn't
feel that she should be there and her position is precarious and she's afraid
it will collapse. As a result, she's pretty heavy-handed. I think if I gave
her house of cards a good whack, it would collapse and she would actually
settle down and be happier -- she's sort of painted herself into a corner --
but because she's paranoid and has built up a layered defense, I haven't
found the proper tool."

"You have a tool in mind," Candace said. It was a statement, not a
question.

"Arlene wouldn't be caught dead admitting it, but she has the bug,
too, for black males. I stumbled upon her private porn stash and it appears
that she would like to be used and abused my several black males --
dominated, perhaps roughly," Robert revealed.

Candace smiled crookedly. "We have the prescription for that bug,
and his name is Damian."

	"Oh?"

"Young, virile, black, and VERY dominant!" Candace described Damian.
"I have some of your wife's issues, and I assure you, Damian is the
treatment."

"Well!" Robert sat back, clearly pleased.

"As you can see, we have the resources to fit your needs," Toby said
quietly. "In return, we would be looking for a commitment from you."

"What kind of commitment?" Robert asked cautiously.

"A commitment to help us handle similar problems in others," Toby
replied. "We have a shortage of full members who are adult males -- and some
of them suffer from limitations."

"Not physical ones!" Amy interjected, "More of a case of increased
vulnerability to blackmail and scandal."

"Ah." Robert was still gazing into the distance. "You can really do
all this?"

	"Absolutely." Toby nodded.

	"Tabitha, here..." Robert began.

"... Is not only talented, she's absolutely insatiable!" Toby
finished for him. "Am I lying, Bobby?"

"Nope. She's good, Pop -- REAL good! I know it, personally!" Bobby
confirmed.

"Want me to crawl under the table and suck you?" Tabitha asked
artlessly.

Robert's eyes bulged slightly. "Uh, no, I don't think this is the
place, Dear."

"Well, there's other places..." Tabitha murmured.

"If you'd like, I'll make a point of asking for you at some point,"
Robert said, mildly dazed.

"That'd be good." Tabitha smiled widely.

"What do I need to do?" Robert asked.

"Well, we should hold an initiation," Amy ventured. "Tabitha would
do, maybe, but she's really pretty much old enough to be legal. I think the
premiere initiation right now for guys is the one Bobby got -- a blowjob from
a thirteen-year-old black girl."

	"Wh--what?" Robert gasped. "That's pedo..."

"Pop, Brie is a regular cum vampire!" Bobby related, "Believe me, YOU
won't be exploiting HER, no matter WHAT it LOOKS like!"

	Robert, shaken, asked, "Really?"

"She loves the stuff! She's tackled guys trying to get some!" Toby
confirmed. "It's just the way she is!"

"How would we deal with Arlene?" Robert asked.

"I have some ideas," Candace replied. "What if she were to be
invited to a spa and worked over by a hunky black masseur? Do you think she
could resist?"

	"Heh, probably not..." Robert grinned.

"Of course, we would have it all on video..." Amy interjected. "I
think if we worked things right, we could do it in three stages -- the third
being Arlene and four or five black guys..."

"Wow..." Robert shook his head. "You know, her father has some hold
on her. He cracks the whip the least little bit and she rolls over, sits up
and begs..."

"We may be able to discover what it is," Toby offered, "We're pretty
good at such things."

"That would be something..." Robert mused. "When can we start?"

"We'll make a few calls and let you know," Candace replied. "Later
in the week, if all goes well. Does she know any of the other mothers in the
class?" They got down to ways and means. Dinner passed quickly.

On the way home, Candace mused, "Why are we handing him a club to
beat his wife with?"

"He's right -- she's in over her head," Amy replied positively.
"Trust me. I talked to Trish about her and Bobby was in full agreement and I
could tell Robert wasn't looking to play dirty -- he's doing her a favor."

"I hope so..." But Candace's concerns were mild and Toby didn't need
to help her to forget them. If Amy had seen any deception in Robert, she'd
have pulled the plug...

                       ----------------------------------

Clint and Brenda were gone when they got back to the clubhouse. "I
took them home," Abigail announced. She was visibly unhappy, though...

	"What's wrong?" Candace asked.

"The doctor thinks Janice may be pregnant. He says it is too early
to tell, one way or the other, but..."

Toby collected Amy's hand and reached out to where Janice sat in her
room down the hall. She was conflicted; she wanted children, and Mark had
said that it wouldn't matter -- but she would begin to show before Christmas
and might have the baby before graduation! Besides, what if -- God forbid --
Mark should change his mind? What if Mark's mother drove them apart? The
specter of repeating her mother's mistakes hung heavily over her...

<She's not ready,> Amy pronounced, riding Toby's carrier to examine
the narrow girl. <Physically, even more than mentally. She needs to gain
weight and open up and get happy.> She locked eyes with Toby. <I did this
-- WE did this, last week.> Amy was referring to the time she'd cleared the
place and then she and Toby had had sex in the office, sparking a cascade
that got Fred and Abigail and Mark and Janice involved in their own acts.

<How do we undo it?> Toby asked.

<I do it, or I would be pregnant, too. There is a way -- a natural
way -- the body will expel the egg itself if it doesn't appear to be possible
to carry the child to term without harm to them both. It's a survival
mechanism designed to deal with periods of extreme hardship. Here...> Amy
exerted her will, using Toby as a conduit...

... And Janice threw a cramp! "Ow!" She struggled up. 'I'm wet!'
she realized. Fortunately, no one was around, so she could check... "Ewwww!
Momma!"

Abigail looked up from her conversation. "Janice?" She stuck her
head out into the hallway.

"Help! I need a pad! I have to get to the bathroom!" Janice
announced in a stage whisper.

"I'll be right there!" Abigail raced off.

<I hated doing that, but Janice needs to be in a better place, first
-- physically AND mentally,> Amy sighed. <The baby would have had
difficulties, and so would Janice. When she's ready, she'll want more than
one -- and that's all she would have had, if this one had gone to term.>
Toby nodded in agreement.

Meanwhile Abigail and Candace were clucking over Janice. "Is it just
a heavy period, or a miscarriage?" Candace asked.

"I'm a little early," Janice noted. "Not much -- a day or two..."

	"All this stress..." Abigail muttered.

"I'll call Beth and get the doctor back," Candace announced, grabbing
the phone.

"We need an exam room," Toby announced.

"Yes." Candace agreed, but visibly put it aside -- other things were
more important.

Doctor Rankin was with Beth -- a regular occurrence these days --
which simplified things. "IF you were pregnant," he announced, after an
examination of Janice, "your body decided this wasn't the time. Nothing has
been damaged, and it MAY have just been that stress brought on an early
period. You're still primed to have babies. Here..." He handed her a
prescription. "Get started on these as soon as it's over. Use rubbers for
the next month. It's a good idea anyway, for anyone but your primary
partner, or if either of you is seeing others..."  He gave her the evil eye;
reinforcing the lecture he'd given both her and her mother earlier.

"I should pay you..." Abigail muttered.

Robert glanced at Beth. "It's taken care of." Beth was 'paying'
Robert regularly, in the agreed-upon coin -- sex -- and he was paid probably
thirty or forty exams in advance, at this point. Beth just smiled -- they
weren't kidding each other. Robert would very likely get 'paid' again, later
that evening...

Beth turned to her son, "Toby?"

"We ate out, earlier, Ma," Toby told her. "I'll hang out here for a
while and do my homework, so you two can have privacy."

"Okay." Beth took Robert's hand and led him off.

"I need to go home," Amy announced.

"Sure." Toby took her out to the car and drove her home, leaving
Janice and her mother in relative peace, as Candace also withdrew to go home
and cook for Lon -- which, as it turned out, Sally had already handled when
she arrived...

"Are you all right, Child?" Abigail asked.

"I'm grateful," Janice sighed. "I didn't want to have to make that
decision. Now I don't have to."

"Rest. You and Mark -- be careful. I want to see grandchildren, but
there is no rush."

	"Yes, Mom."

                       ----------------------------------

Tuesday morning, Amy and Toby were sitting in his car in the school
parking lot, waiting for the first bell. "I like the spa idea Candace came
up with," Amy noted. "I think we could integrate it with a couple of other
things to make a 'club tour' that would work for Noreen and Arlene both..."
She proceeded to lay out a scenario.

Toby grinned. "I like it! We don't want to be known as a massage
parlor, but the guys like happy endings, too. It's what brought Bobby and
Trish together..."

"We need to talk to Damian -- and Randy," Amy opined.

"We need Brie, anyway," Toby agreed, nodding. "Knowing Candace,
she's ahead of us in parts of this... I think we can bring in the Beckwiths,
split them up, and do Robert's initiation while someone is working over
Arlene. We need someone to lure in the Bitch -- and it should probably be
either Robert or Harmon."

"Three tables..." Amy murmured. It was all coming together in her
head. "I'll call Candace or Abby. We can do this -- this week, even. Maybe
tomorrow..."

"We need several guys... I'm thinking Damian and Randy and maybe
Pete Phifer and Alonzo. Rick and Chuck, too. It'll be kind of a mid-week
party for them..." Toby mused.

"Let's see if we can make it work," Amy agreed.

                       ----------------------------------

Nicky sidled up to Eddie Ray. "Mama says hi."

"Tell her I said hi," Eddie Ray replied, looking around. "Nicky, I
don't want to be an asshole, but I'm not out, you know? I don't think I want
to be, either."

	"What about...?" Nicky's stomach clenched.

"I'm just saying that our private business needs to stay private,
okay? You, me, your mama -- it needs to stay secret. It doesn't need to go
away -- just stay secret," Eddie Ray explained patiently.

"Oh." Nicky still didn't feel all that great.

"Look, I know it kind of sucks, but we all have to protect ourselves.
We'll work out something -- promise!"

	"Okay."

"Want me to stop by tonight?" Eddie Ray waved the carrot.

	"Please?"

	"What time?"

"I'll call Mama and let you know. Can you come for dinner?"

	"Yeah, probably." Eddie Ray grinned.

	"Okay, cool!" Nicky wandered off.

'Poor little shit,' Eddie Ray mused. 'All he wants is for someone to
treat him halfway decent.' Eddie Ray wasn't sure he was the guy to do it,
but he vowed to try not to inflict any more pain on Nicky than he had to.

                       ----------------------------------

Eddie Ray was more or less obligated to sit at the team table -- and
now that the cheerleaders were back, that meant he had to suffer the likes of
Lucy O'Donnell. Why wasn't clear, but she seemed to think Eddie Ray was hot
-- although it wasn't clear what she thought hot was and what she thought she
should do with it. "It's great to be back!" she announced, plopping down
beside him.

	"Oh? Why?" Eddie Ray asked.

That stopped her. "Because," she said after a moment's thought, "the
cheerleaders should be with the team."

	"Individually?"

	"Well, yes," Lucy nodded, blinking.

	"Me, in particular? Why?"

"I like you!" Lucy produced a winning smile.

Now, objectively, there wasn't a lot wrong with Lucy. She was blonde
and perky and built nicely. The fact that she wasn't the brightest bulb in
the circuit could even be assumed to be advantageous -- but Eddie Ray hadn't
had much to do with girls until VERY recently, and he hadn't broken Vince's
indoctrination totally -- for young girls, anyway. As a result of previous
experience, he had her down in his book as a nuisance.

"You like hanging out next to me," Eddie Ray accused. "That isn't
the same as liking me."

"Um, what?" Lucy blinked in surprise.

"What do you like about me?" Eddie Ray demanded.

	"Well, you're really buff..."

	"You like that?"

	"Yeah..."

It was hard not to believe her -- she really didn't seem to have the
mental capacity to lie a lot. "What else?"

	"I like freckles?"

	"No, really..."

"Really!" Lucy's expression was the essence of sincerity.

Eddie Ray had taken it on faith that Lucy was a pain in the ass --
Vince had said so on numerous occasions. Direct exposure didn't seem to
confirm that, though...

Then Lucy blew it. "Who are you taking to Homecoming?"

"Nobody," Eddie Ray announced. "I'm going alone."

	"Why?"

"I don't want to give some girl ideas."

	"What kind of ideas?"

"Ideas like, 'If I hang out with Eddie Ray, somebody will take our
picture for the yearbook and everybody will think we're a couple.' THAT kind
of ideas!" Eddie Ray snarled.

He might as well have slapped her! "B--but... I didn't... I
don't..." she stammered, shocked. "I just..."

Cindy leaned up and said -- gently, for her, "Lucy doesn't think like
that, Eddie Ray."

"No?" Eddie Ray was genuinely surprised. "Sorry!" Lucy looked
sulky.

                       ----------------------------------

Lucy waited until Eddie Ray got up to leave and followed him. "What
did I do?"

Eddie Ray sighed. "Nothing, maybe. I don't know. Some girls think
that hunting down a football player is a great way to get popular."

"I'm ALREADY a cheerleader!" Lucy pointed out. "You've been hanging
out with that Vince for too long -- he's a woman-hater from way back!" She
sighed. "Since you seemed to have stopped, I was hoping..."

"Well, you're more or less right about Vince," Eddie Ray agreed,
smiling crookedly, "although I don't think even he knows why he's so down on
girls. Look, I'm sorry, okay?"

"Okay." Lucy looked cutely petulant. "Were you serious about
Homecoming?"

"Going alone? Yes." Watching her gather herself to ask why, he
added, "It's complicated."

	Lucy didn't quit. "Complicated, how?"

"Well, what if you wanted to take someone, but you just couldn't,
because it would cause a lot of trouble for both you and the other person,"
Eddie Ray said carefully.

	Lucy frowned. "How?"

Eddie Ray frowned, wondering just how far he could go. "Let's say,
it would reveal something better left secret. I can't take that person, but
if I took someone else, I would hurt that person."

"So you have a girlfriend, but it's a secret."

Eddie Ray scratched his head. Would agreeing fix things or just make
Lucy redouble her efforts? "Um, it's probably not that simple." Eddie Ray
liked older women -- so he probably liked girls -- and Lucy wasn't hard to
look at. Just holding this conversation with her raised her in his
estimation. "I'm doing some complicated stuff right now -- just dating a
regular girl would be simple by comparison, but I've made commitments. I'm
trying not to hurt people."

"So you DON'T have a girlfriend?"

"Nothing... vanilla, anyway. I don't see it happening -- a girl
would have to be pretty flexible to put up with me. And I'd be getting into
something new that I don't even know would work."

	Lucy sighed. "I'm confused."

Eddie Ray grinned. "You're supposed to be. If you understood, then
you would know too much."

"Can we talk about this some more?" Lucy asked, then took a blind
stab at things, "What if you took us both?" Eddie Ray got thoughtful and
Lucy looked sly, "I hit something, didn't I?"

"Yeah, maybe," Eddie Ray agreed. "I still don't see it working
without me taking a chance on you learning things you might not understand.
After practice, maybe?"

"Okay." 'At least I'm making SOME ground! What is up with Eddie
Ray, anyway?' Lucy wondered. 'If he wasn't so hot, this wouldn't be worth
it.' The pair parted company.

Gabby cornered Lucy later, saying, "You're wasting your time with
Eddie Ray. I don't even think he likes girls. I'm pretty sure Vince
doesn't."

"Well, he's not hanging out with Vince anymore," Lucy retorted,
"Maybe I can fix it."

Gabby sighed; Lucy was SO dense, sometimes! "If he doesn't like
girls, you won't fix it."

"He hasn't told me that he doesn't like girls," Lucy insisted. "That
would be simple, wouldn't it?"

Gabby eyed her. "Sure it would -- like he would come out and say
such a thing! Lucy, sometimes I worry about you..." She shook her head and
wandered off, leaving Lucy perplexed.

Meanwhile, Eddie Ray hunted down Nicky. "What do you think of Lucy
O'Donnell?"

Nicky, caught flat-footed, said, "Well, she's okay for a cheerleader,
I guess. She's nice enough..."

"She proposed something. I can't take you to Homecoming and I can't
even REALLY be seen hanging out with you, there -- but if there was a girl
there..."

"Hmmm. Yeah. She's with you, but she's with me -- or maybe AND
she's with me. But it keeps things from being obvious..." Then a thought
occurred to him and he looked sad. "Eddie Ray..."

"Nicky, I'm pretty sure I like girls, too. But it's like that -- I
like you, and I might like a girl or two. You might have to share. But to
do things right, we need to find a girl like your Mama -- one who can handle
it." Eddie Ray eyed Nicky. "Have you ever tried a girl? The regular way?"

Nicky snorted. "Where would I find a girl to do THAT with?"

"Then you don't know, do you? What did you think of your mama?"

Nicky looked thoughtful. "Mama is running scared. She's sure I'm
gonna."

"Are YOU sure? One way or the other?"

	Nicky pursed his lips. "No."

"Maybe you're gonna need a girl on the side, too," Eddie Ray opined.

"That's two more girls than we have," Nicky pointed out.

"Lucy wants to talk after practice. Maybe you can check her out some
during practice. She's kind of slow, or I think she'd have figured it all
out by now; I've been trying to make her understand that I'm into something
without explaining exactly what," Eddie Ray related. "It's been a minefield,
but she hasn't gotten it yet. I think part of it is because instead of just
focusing on you, I was busy trying to cover myself over your mama, too."

Nicky nodded. "Yeah, I get that. Wow, that makes things REAL
complicated!"

	"Yeah."

	"I'll uh, feel her out."

"Okay." Eddie Ray chuckled to himself, thinking, 'Some guys would be
thinking more about feeling her UP!'
