   ..  And here is the exhibit that has generated most of the publicity
this last couple of weeks.  We are really proud that the artist chose our
gallery for her 2 week long 'Still Life' 'work.

   As you can see it consists of the artist herself, Jamie Cousins,
completely naked with her wrists and ankles fastened in stocks mounted at
the top and bottom of a transparent cylinder, and yes, it is the living and
breathing real person.  However, if you look closely, you will see that the
cylinder is in fact also filled with a transparent semi- rigid elastomer,
and there are transparent tubes coming out of her.  Also, there is this
control panel.  Jamie has already been here for 5 days and nights, and will
remain just as you see now till the end of the exhibition in 9 days time.
Although the story is told by her on the interactive video system built
into the console, I'll explain it for our radio audience.

   Jamie is fed by a pipe which goes up her left nostril, fed by the hopper
above.  The other end of the tube is in her stomach.  Her air comes through
her right nostril, via another tube.  If you look lower down, you can see a
tube coming out of her bottom.  This has stretched her sphincter, and ends
in her bowels.  Solid waste comes out and into the tank on the right of the
base., in a similar way, a catheter comes out of her urethra and into the
tank on the left here.  It is about 1 third full of urine at the moment.

   Now her vagina is stretched by a complex device.  The inner tubular
section carries blood and debris from her period, which has just started,
into a receptacle near the front.  This is part of the statement of the
piece, as it symbolises the waste of potential life and yet also makes the
visitor aware of the time constraints which the female has to always bear
in mind.

   Anyway, the sexual side of femininity is dealt with by some pietzo
activated ribs around this tube, and a small projection which encircles her
clitoris.  From the control centre here, we can monitor her vital signs,
courtesy of some small sensors on her body.  With this joystick, you can
sexually stimulate Jamie in full public view, and if you are good at it,
you can even see her orgasm.  The elastomer gives a little and comes back
to add its support, but as you can see, not much movement is possible due
to the stocks.

   Also on the vaginal area, is a small drain for fluid.  As well as the
vital signs , you can often see her arousal from how erect her nipples are.
As you can see, she has rings in them, and this tends to accentuate the
effect.

   Another little diversion which symbolises the fragility of life is the
red button here.  When pressed it cuts off her air for a random period up
to 90 seconds.  You can see various vital signs change, and often see her
face change as well.  Because of the elastomer, she cannot breath very
deeply anyway.  You will usually see her try to gulp air, either during or
after this period.  This is almost a reflex, as the elastomer means there
is not air, only that fed via her nostril.

   Lastly, we come to pain.  Most of us have to suffer it at some time in
our lives, and this fact is symbolised here by having some electrodes on
her skin near major muscles.  Look carefully at her thighs, calves and
arms. On the control desk, there are buttons on a picture of Jamie, and
pressing the buttons will cause cramp like pain for as long as they are
pressed.  Note that software monitors her condition, and will stop the pain
before she passes out..  You may of course see her jaw strain to open, but
I doubt you could hear her scream through the elastomer.  Remember also
that she will by now always have some cramps in her body.  This is all part
of her art, It represents the heavy loads we all have to carry at times,
which we can do nothing about.

   So there we have it.  Some doctors and activists have been very scathing
about Jamie using herself in this manner and calling it art.  Also, we do
realise that there is a risk of injury or death for Jamie, and so there is
a human present with knowledge of the rig at all times..  Incidentally,
remember that Jamie put herself into this position, fully aware of the
risks and personal discomfort involved, and when it is all over, you will
be able to buy the whole story on DVD including footage on how she is
removed, and her condition and thoughts afterwards.  Just take a form now,
or pay ahead on your credit cards.

   The small party moved to the control panel, while some simply walked in
a circle staring.  One girl was heard to remark that her eyes were
following her.  Then they closed as a man pushed the red button and then
watched her intently.  After around 75 seconds, a bleep was heard, and you
could see Jamie try to gulp in air.  While some of the people were watching
the video describing her entombment, the man started playing with the
cramping buttons.  Jamie's eyes were fixed on him, as he pointedly pressed
the buttons with a slight grin on his face.  Jamie twitched and you could
see some sweat trickling down her body after.

   Now we have to leave coverage of this event, and return to something
more mainstream, Gardening..
