Ellie got out of bed and picked up her composition book. She was
excited because now she could add another name to the list.
She scanned through the names that had been written over the years,
smiling at her memories. The first was John. They'd only been in 7th
grade then, and so naive. They'd never even heard of condoms. But his
fumbling had been charming and erotic.
A little farther down was Brian, who she had followed home from
school, until one thing led to another. Mike, with whom a slow dance
soon gave way to slow, passionate lovemaking. She turned the page.
Billy, her friend's boyfriend. She'd felt guilty about that one.
Frank, who was cute and innocent. Barry, who helped her fill many
lonely nights after she went off to college.
There was Scott, the first other man she was attracted to after her
marriage. She'd been unsure what to make of that, and it took a while
before she realized it was okay.
The names went on. Carl, with his thick, full lips and handsome
mustache. Anthony, tall and muscular. David, who sent a tingle
through her every time she saw him. Ellie was glad she had written
them down for posterity. She wouldn't have wanted to forget a single
one.
She heard a noise as Boyd woke up and got out of bed. Dear, sweet
Boyd. They'd both been virgins when they got married, and neither of
them had ever felt unsatisfied with having just one lover. He came up
behind her and kissed the back of her neck, watching as she
inscribed, "186. Hugh Laurie."
"Another one?" he smiled.
"Yes," Ellie replied. "It was a good dream."
