"Moments of Gold"

I. The Meeting

I sighed and squirmed a bit in my airline seat, still not believing
that it was going to happen. I finally was going to see Elizabeth, in
person, real. After so long!
I had entered a contest on American Express' website--it was called
E-Mail Pals London Encounter. The idea was that you and a person whom
you correspond via e-mail but not real life were BOTH given a trip to
London to finally meet, and to simply have a vacation.
It was to be arranged, though, that if you turned out not to like the
person you had been writing, that after the photo-ops and so forth,
the two of you could essentially have seperate vacations. However, as
Elizabeth said. "J, I don't think we are going to worry about that."
You see, Elizabeth and I have a cyber romance.
Distance is of course, the reason. I live in the Windy City,
Chicago. Heart of the Midwest. I do some HTML, some java, stuff like
that. Michael Jason is my name, although Elizabeth likes to call me
Jason since I use that name on the Internet. Elizabeth works in the
procuring section of the Charlotte Art Museum. Costumes,
specifically. As you might expect from her name, she DOES like
Medieval England. And, of course, her residence makes for great lines
like wanting to spend time in her web...
Anyway, we met on the Internet, and seemed like we had known each
other for ages. Saying each other's thoughts, or typing I should say,
and a very basic compatability. It was a crying shame that we lived
too far apart to meet.
So, since it is part of my job to be on the Internet to a high
degree, I one day found a web page with the AMEX contest. And so I
entered our names. I don't think they expected or really desired
cyber-lovers, but I didn't expect to win, either. Imagine my surprise
when we did.
6 days and 5 nights in the land of Shakespeare, Pubs and knights in
shining armor. I had been to the wonderful city years before, on a
trip with my older sister. Elizabeth, on the other hand, has not been
much outside the Carolinas, except for a wonderful trip she gushed
about to Washington D.C. As you might expect, the Smithsonian she
found very appealing.
Anyway, due to the way the flights were set up, I would arrive in
Heathrow a couple of hours ahead of the plane Elizabeth was on. No
chance even to go to the Hotel, however, since all the AMEX people
were going to be in the airport, and waiting to photograph our
meeting. Elizabeth and I agreed beforehand to simply go for the peck
on the cheek. No need to freak out the kindly sponsors of this trip
when we would finally meet.
So, the plane finally landed, and a couple of greeters and chaperones
later, I was in an office in the airport. Awaiting the signal to go
back to th
