happened to our folks.  Dad wanted to take Ramirez to the police, but I
talked him down saying that if we did then Elaine would have to testify
against him.  I didn't want to put her through and I didn't think that he
did either so we agreed to table it.  We still had the picture and if worst
came to worst it would tell most of the tale.  Tommy told me later that the
gun had hidden Elaine's face but there was no doubt as to what was
happening.  It was a moot point because Ramirez disappeared the next day
and Daniel's dad got the maintenance job.  That was great because they had
been having trouble with the rent, and the apartment came with the job.

   Elaine took her tests and did very well.  She didn't ace them, but there
were no grades under 75%, which is much higher than she had expected to do.

   After graduation she got a job with telephone sales.  This was perfect
for her.  Over the telephone no one could see her, and her sweet voice with
the slight southern accent made people glad to buy from her.  Elaine was
consistently the best sales person and got bonuses almost every month.  I
worked at the same grocery store I had the previous summer, but only part
time.  I finished enough classes in summer school to be able to graduate
next year.  Only Joshua attended summer school of the 3 J's.  I understood
the John and Justin were enrolled at a junior college to complete their
high school requirements.

   Elaine and I got a car by the end of summer, and moved across town to a
new school district.  By this time it was obvious that we were a couple. 
None of our friends said anything bad, but it was clear that it made most
of them uncomfortable.  Edgar said it best.  "It makes sense and I
understand, but I can't help but think that someone else is missing out on
a great girl."

   By the end of the school year we were ready to have kids.  I had gotten
snipped at the free clinic so Elaine had done away with the Norplants.  I
had secretly asked both Richard and Robert to do the deed.  Elaine liked
the idea of twins.
