 Alice's Adventures in Polderland - part 3

   Alice and her four new friends, Angie, Sarah and the M&Ms (Mindy and
Marie) walk out onto the street, laughing and chatting.  They walk the
short distance to Angie's grandmother's place, which is actually a huge
warehouse that has been converted into many apartments.

   They get into a lift and go up 3 floors.

   Sarah unlocked a door while Angie took Alice by the hand and lead her

   "When you said you shared with your gran, I thought you meant just a

   "There's four bedrooms at that end and a huge balcony just there," Sarah
said, pointing through some sliding glass doors.

   "Everywhere seems to have balconies," Alice noticed.

   "Yes.  Some people just live on theirs.  It's safer than the street. 
You'll see more tomorrow," explained Angie.

   "Come on Marie.  It's bedtime," giggled Mindy, pulling her partner with
her.

   They quickly shut the door and Alice could hear more giggles.  She
grinned at Angie.

   "Those two are very close," she observes.

   "Have been for two years now - so sweet!" agreed Sarah.

   "This is our room!" Angie said as she opened the door of a very large
bedroom.  It had a huge four-poster bed and all sorts of things on the
floors and walls.  Alice looked shocked.

   "Don't worry.  It's just fun!" chuckled Angie.

   Alice opened the door she was standing outside and peered in.  It was
another large room, with a big double bed.  She smiled as her new friends
closed the door behind themselves, laughing as they said goodnight.

   Alone again, Alice went to the window and looked out.  The next building
was only a short distance away across the narrow street and she could see
into many of the rooms.  People didn't seem to close their curtains much in
Amsterdam, she thought.  She looked around the window, but there were no
curtains or blinds.  She realised that she would also have to do as the
locals do.

   Not having any nightclothes, as Angie had not suggested earlier that she
could stay over, Alice turned off the room light.  She slowly took of her
clothes, wondering if anyone was watching.  It made her feel more than a
little excited, but she didn't actually parade herself in front of the
window.  She caught the odd glimpse of several others across the street,
walking around in their rooms.  One guy stood at the front of his room,
right at the window, and slowly undressed, clearly looking at another room
in the same building as Alice was in.  Alice wondered who he was looking
