The well dressed man unlocked the door and ushered the Sweetmans, Sam, Caroline and their three children, Toby, Tara and Tabitha, into what turned out to be a very nicely equipped kitchen. "We're all very excited to have a new family move into the village," said the man, who had identified himself as 'Mr. Dampnir'. As he was opening a blind, light flooded into the kitchen. It picked up the golden tints in Sam and Toby's blond hair and the reddish ones in Caroline's and her daughters' normally raven tresses. "Especially," Dampnir continued, "such a charming family!" His eyes surveyed the Sweetmans. They passed quickly over Sam and Toby and seemed to linger longingly on Tabitha, then Tara and finally Caroline. He held his gaze noticeably and murmured, "Yes, charming!" Remembering himself, he turned to Sam, "His lordship is eager to meet with you and your family" This pleased Sam. "I can't wait to meet his lordship myself," he replied. "Excellent, shall we say tea, tomorrow at 4pm?" Dampnir beamed. "Sounds lovely," Caroline replied. She was also keen to meet her husband's new employer. This was so exciting, Sam had been head-hunted to handle the legal affairs of a real life lord, and tomorrow he wanted all of them to tea. She wondered what he would be like. "Marvelous." Dampnir, who was His Lordship's private secretary, continued, "I'll take my leave of you and allow you time to settle in." He shook both Sam's and Toby's hands and then he turned to the girls and took each one's hand and kissed it gently. Tabitha, who was 13, giggled slightly and seemed to enjoy the attention. Tara, who was two years older than her sister, flushed deep red and pulled her hand away, embarrassed at the action of this stranger. When Dampnir took Caroline's hand, he looked directly into her eyes, kissed her hand and then smiled languidly and again murmured, "Charming." Now it was Caroline's turn to flush, but she also smiled at this chivalrous attention. When Dampnir broke his gaze and let go of her hand, Caroline felt vaguely disappointed. With what seemed to be a little bow, Dampnir turned and left the house. The Sweetmans stood in silence a moment before Toby exclaimed, "I want the attic room!" "Oh no you don't, my lad!" Sam replied. "That's for me and your mother." There are three more bedrooms in the house. Why don't you all go and get settled in. The children bolted from the kitchen. Soon they could be heard having the type of squabbled common amongst teenagers that are close in age with Toby, the oldest at 17, the loudest. Their arguments grew muted by the centuries old plaster and timber of the house. Sam and Caroline found themselves alone in the kitchen. "Well honey, what do you think?" Sam inquired "Pretty good." Caroline moved closer to her husband and wrapped her arms around him. "Now," she whispered in his ear, "how bout we christen the place?" Sam smiled and kissed his wife. Yes tonight was the beginning of a whole new chapter in the lives of the Sweetman family.
