I'm certain they had help with the math (those as-yet-unexplained numbered notes are probably references to their helpers), as the base numbers are bigger than I can easily get my head around. The comparisons of bird to cat to horse to house put things into a kid's perspective - probably more adult help. Since the kids were tasked with finding answers, they went to the most knowledgeable sources available. I expected thorough research but I'm impressed with what a good job they did - this would be A+ material at the high school level. "LeiLyn and crew - thank you. You did excellent research and a very good presentation. You mentioned that the ash/dust collection could begin 'soon'. When would that be?" "When the first bags are finished. Probably this weekend. Daddy said that he would help us with the breathing gear and watch us while we manipulated the bags over the field behind the building. He said we will not be allowed out of sight of an adult until we demonstrate proper control of the bag and good sense in knowing when we're near the maximum load we can each manage. There's an old quarry about a mile from here that we can use for our initial dump site." "LeiLyn, is there an estimated time for completion?" "Mr. Wilson, if it was just us, we'd all be old by the time we finished, but Daddy said there will be lots of babies in the future so the cleanup will proceed faster each year. "Linda, the research that you girls have done certainly appears to make a speed up possible." "We get to do the coolest things in school!" "LeiLyn asked if it would be possible to drag a bag of some type through the air to collect the ash and dust and then dump the collected particles somewhere to clear the air faster than waiting for everything to settle out by gravity. I tasked the five of them with finding appropriate material and getting expert assistance in what the bag should look like, what its size and construction should be, etc. The posters are the result of two weeks' research." "I'm impressed by their work. Could it be done?" "They can start as soon as the collection bags are finished. Probably this coming weekend." "How long will it take?" "If it were only the five of them, a very long time. Factoring in the birth rate, maybe eleven or twelve years." "You originally expected to be in the Survival Buildings for how long?" "20 or 30 years. This will be a major leap forward in being able to repopulate the Earth." "I think today's music lessons should be all happy songs - and I have several." "You have the class." Ring. "Five of the girls in my class have been researching a possible way to speed the removal of ash and dust from the air. They gave their report today and it appears that the air could be clear enough to start planting crops in eleven or twelve years." "Who gave them that wild idea?" "The original idea for a way to clean the air came from LeiLyn. The details of the process came from her father and some of the other scientists here. You should drop by the classroom and look at the posters while they're having music." "When?" "Now." "This I gotta see." "George, the documentation for this research is excellent. I think they have something good." "They start testing when the first collection bags are finished - probably Saturday." "I'll be there to watch them. I never cease to be amazed by what these kids know and imagine." "They're smarter than I am, but I have more experience, so they still listen to me." The kids did enjoy the happy songs - although "Purple People Eater" probably qualifies more as silly than happy. Sarah mentioned that an alien might not look very different from a human - especially since all the girls are part alien. That generated some serious discussion - with some questions raised about there being any "alien" influence. Sarah held her own, using the family trees that led back to a "Starman" ancestor for every girl and bringing up pictures of typical human babies to compare with Molly's babies. None of these girls now question their alien ancestry. I resisted the urge to give Sarah a mental hug, but I did give her the teacher->student compliment on being able to support her argument with multiple sources. When we leave the classroom, I'll give her the father->daughter hug and tell her how proud I am of her. "Class, time for lunch. We'll have the hydroponics lesson when we return. Now you get to do that for a new group of babies. I expect whoever is available to help any time there is a baby needing attention than her mother can't provide." The kids are excited about the hydroponic plantings - the tomatoes have a few tiny blossoms. Nothing like visible results to pique their interest; I think they'll be paying close attention to today's lesson. They've had the opportunity to compare their "thinning" reports with Melody's. None were an exact match, but all were close enough that they would have had a good crop. I'm impressed and I think they'll probably want to try planting more things in the future. We can fit two more tanks in this room - that will keep all their crops together and constantly in their minds. Wonder if Bill Jackson's class is mature enough to take care of hydroponic tanks in an adjacent room or on another floor? I need to ask him. +MO UNCLE GEORGE!!! What can I do for you? @d@m I am the commander of a planet seeding and rescue ship. My name is +Wi but I use my title of @d@m - the equivalent of your title of ship's captain. We became aware of a catastrophic event on your planet when the monitors at the edge of your galaxy alerted us that there was radio silence. +G Whom do you plan to rescue? @d@m Not any of the groups in contact with you as you appear to have planned for almost all eventualities and are executing the plans well. We will extract the group in the area you call California. The survival structure there was not damaged by the breakup of the landmass and we propose to transport the structure intact to a planet near Alpha Centauri. We have learned much since our ship failed in your year 1710 and are much wiser than on the first visit some 15,000 of your years ago. We now have force fields that can shield a ship from external damage and can provide a seal that withstands the vacuum of space. The survival structure will be wrapped in such a field to retain its atmosphere during transit. We also travel much faster than we did then - typically 0.9 of lightspeed and even better when there are tunnels between black holes in or near the solar systems between which we wish to travel. +G You've been space travelers for 15,000 years? @d@m Yes. The ship that first landed on your planet was too damaged to be made spaceworthy via field repairs. That crew lived aboard the ship, the =d=n, for some time and intermarried with the natives. The children had the best traits of both species and we hoped they would spread over the planet. It appears that they did but the story of our coming to the planet was changed beyond recognition by generations of divergence in the oral traditions. We've seen that most of your cultures have pieces of the story but not the details. We have four officers with command titles on each ship: @d@m, which I've said is like captain; =v=, the co-captain, @b=l, the manager of the fliers; c@n, the manager of the pilots and navigators. The overall commander of the space fleet has the title Y@w=. The first craft was destroyed when the c@n lost hope because no rescue/repair ship could reach this planet in his lifetime and he forced the life support reactor to critical. The @b=l evacuated others from the ship in time, but he was killed in the explosion. +G I see the origins of some of the religious folklore - @d@m was the in-charge person, so became identified as Adam, the "first man"; the ship was a paradise compared to the outside world so =d=n became identified as Eden. @d@m The people with the strongest traits were able to use their minds to build structures and to move groups of people to other parts of the planet. We knew of the unstable crust and wished to have many areas settled so a single event would not destroy all life on the planet. Most of the groups built signs that could direct a rescue ship to them, but we were not able to return until your year 1710. Over time we learned how massive some of the events could be - then we began leading people to create the structures you are in. The hysteria over UFO's eventually made it difficult to bring our ships near your planet, so we placed relay stations at the edge of your galaxy. We could monitor you and we could communicate with select individuals such as the young one you call Molly O and yourself. Molly O has incredible range for someone so young; you are fortunate to have her. Some 70 years ago, we began more directly influencing people in political, military, and business areas to make provisions for a catastrophic event such as has recently occurred. The timing was good, as a sufficient number were saved to allow you to repopulate the planet. That you have the young ones involved in designing and building tools to speed the cleanup process tells us that you are the right leader for this project. +G Thank you, but I was put in charge by others - most of whom I do not know. @d@m That is as planned. The people choosing the leaders for the project were looking for specific traits and abilities and they worked from anonymous resumes - you came to the top because of experience and ancestry. I see that you and others have already begun to father children with the young ones. You have started in good time to produce the numbers needed to repopulate this planet and restart your industrial processes. +G You mentioned travelling at near lightspeed and between black holes. Are we capable of producing ships with those capabilities? @d@m Based on the abilities we have monitored just during this visit, your descendants will travel at near lightspeed in perhaps 100 of your years. Considering that the internal combustion engine was developed on your planet just over 100 years ago and you progressed from it to space flight in that time, you'll make similar strides in space travel technology in the near future. +G Where would we go? @d@m I will leave galaxy maps with destination planets marked. Your somewhat unpredictable planet is a good place for creating sturdy, intelligent, problem-solvers who can successfully settle other worlds with unknown pitfalls. We have seeded many worlds with your people in the past 300 years. We expect that you will be doing that seeding in this area of the galaxy in just over 100 years. +G This is a lot to absorb. How long will you be here? @d@m Only long enough to wrap the survival structure and prepare it for transport. Our traits are strong in you. I sense that the young ones you claim have heard all that I said. It is good that you are in charge for the next 50 years. +G 50 years? @d@m Yes. You will transfer command to one of your young ones then. It will be obvious to you which one should be in charge. The recordings and maps have been transferred to your computers. Show the maps to the pilots and navigators whom you have already identified and they will remember them. +G Will you contact us again? @d@m Only if you send a distress message that the monitors pick up and relay to us. We've been visited by a ship from the home planet of the aliens from whom we are descended. Those with the strongest communications abilities heard the voice and the others only heard buzzing because the accent is so foreign to anything you've heard before." "George! What happened? The computers all appeared to go down together." "No problem, Ed. I was talking with the captain of an alien ship that had come to check on us because of the radio silence. The California Survival Building survived the earthquakes but the amount of land they would have would not support the people there, so they're taking it to populate a planet near Alpha Centauri." "How?" "With a force field that can seal out the vacuum of space." "Why aren't they taking us?" "Because they think we have things under control and they consider Earth to be the best source of people to seed new planets. The computers appeared to be down because they were so busy with the maps and other data that the aliens downloaded to us." "Maps?" "Galaxy maps with planets marked for us to seed when we get the near lightspeed drive working." "What lightspeed drive?" "The one they left plans for. Our technology should be advanced enough to start building those ships in 100 years." "Did anyone else hear this?" "My girls, Sheila, Carolyn, Lacey, Emily and Molly O in Oregon. Beth and some of the others only heard a buzzing because the accent is so foreign to anything they've heard before." "I heard buzzing but thought it was coming from the computers. "We should have every man in a small, closed tent in the park. All the tents should be identical. We walk all the toddlers and older kids through the park, then ask them which tent they liked the best. Since all the tents are alike, any differences will be in the kids' responses to the person in the tent. We should have some people who aren't part of the project to be sure that the kids are responding to the person and not something else near the tent."
