KNOCK!! KNOCK!! KNOCK!! KNOCK!! KNOCK!! KNOCK!! KNOCK!! Who's at the door at 3AM? Guess I should put on some jeans and answer the door. "Yes?" "George, this is Ed. The San Andreas fault hit at 8.4 and Yellowstone is erupting. We need you in Comms now." "Come in, Ed. The girls need to know where I'm going and why. They may want to come." "OK, George, but as quickly as possible." "Molly. Sarah. Daughters." ""Yes?"" "Girls, the San Andreas fault experienced a big earthquake a few minutes ago and Yellowstone is erupting. I'm needed in Comms. You can stay here or come with me and stay in the little office. You can come in your jammies and finish your sleeping, but bring clothes for the day because I don't know when we'll be back to our quarters. You have two minutes to pick clothes, books, games, and so forth. Remember to bring your Ninja Mind Warrior uniforms." "We're fighting again, Daddy?" "Probably very soon, Molly. We expect an attack on the Survival Building in a matter of hours." ""We're done."" "Thank you for working quickly. Let's go." +Thank you for explaining and for the mind hug! +.Me, too.! "Fill me in on status as we go, Ed." "No change locally. Most people are asleep. Based on current weather conditions, the ash/dust from the eruption won't be here for about 48 hours but that is subject to change very quickly." "That means we'll have near-twilight at mid-day for a while. Set the security cameras for IR and we'll hope to see motion when anyone/anything comes over/through the fence. We should expect at least one more assault on the Survival Building when people outside see the eruption on TV or the internet. If the attackers have hostages, we'll do a rescue on the grounds here. What about Yellowstone and points west of there?" "Yellowstone is invisible to the visible light cameras; the ash, dust, and steam block everything except IR. The IR images show large areas at magma temperatures - leading us to believe that the eruption was huge. The ash/dust cloud is expected to reach an altitude of 70,000 feet. We've lost comms to the California Survival Building but all the others are currently OK." "That altitude will ensure ash fall over 90% of the earth. Looks as though Daniel's predictions were dead on." "George, do you plan to lock down the site and close the blast doors?" "Not until at least several hours into the ash fall, Ed. There's a chance we'll get a few more of our anticipated residents." "You're more optimistic than I am." "Not so much optimistic as practical, Ed. When the unprepared people - especially those still at the National Guard armory - decide that this is the only safe place, they'll try to get in by any means. 'Any' includes using hostages, heavy equipment, explosives or anything else available. Tell all sites to go to Code Red - we should expect attacks in a few hours. Put snipers on the roof with IR vision gear and handi-talkies so they can alert us to anything they see - no more than a four hour shift. Ensure protective clothing and breathing gear are available for everyone who may need to be outside. Activate the airlocks for building exit and entry and the showers in the entry areas to control ash brought inside on clothing and shoes." "Once again you've condensed pages of the 'In Case of..' manual to one paragraph. I'll get people started on all those items, both here and at the other sites. Should the children be awakened and informed?" "Certainly the children that can help us. The ones who've been out on a hostage rescue mission can tell the 'good guys' from the 'bad guys', so they can direct hostage rescue and attacker elimination. Remember that they can disable some of the attackers from inside the building. Molly and Sarah are here with me, although they may have gone back to sleep. Call Ian and have him wake Jane and Beth. You should get Lacey. We may need their abilities." "Beth? She can't do a mind hug." "That's true, but we can use her and the other girls with TK to stop and/or disable vehicles that are trying to enter the site." "And their 'weapons' have unlimited 'ammunition' - good thinking, George." "Just making the best use of our resources." "Poppy?" "Yes, Sarah?" "Something doesn't feel right about the fence. Is there some way you can check it?" "Yes, Sweetie. We have people on the roof watching the site. 'Snipers on the roof. Do you see any activity along the fence?'" "Colonel, this is Carl Williams. I was about to call in. There appear to be vehicles and people outside the fence on the south and east as well as near the main gate. How did you know they were there?" "Sarah told me that something didn't 'feel right' about the fence." "She's inside the building and I'm outside with night vision gear but she knows something is going on as soon as I do. I'm becoming more and more impressed with their abilities." "They provide some of the best intel any military group ever had. Let us know if anything changes out there." "Yes sir." "Daddy?" "Yes, Honey?" "Will we be here a long time? I'm hungry and I need my medicine." "You and Sarah get dressed in your Ninja uniforms. Captain McGregor is preparing breakfast for Jane, Beth, and Lacey. He invited both of you to eat with them. Then go by our quarters to get your medications and bring quiet things to do for the rest of the day." "All day?" "Maybe not all day, but we don't know what the bad guys have planned. We need you here to help us." "OK, Daddy. But what will you eat?" "We'll find something later." Knock! Knock! "Hi, girls. You're right on time - breakfast is on the table." "Thank you Mr. McGregor. Is there some way we can get food to my Daddy and the other people in Comms?" "While you girls eat, I'll make a couple of pots of coffee and put the coffee in Thermos bottles to keep it hot. After you eat, we'll go to the Commissary and see if there is canned bread or the like that you can take to them." "Thank you Mr. McGregor." "All finished, girls?" "Yes Daddy." "Yes Mr. McGregor." "Then time for a trip to the Commissary." "Daddy, Mr. Mason. We brought coffee and some snacks for your breakfast." "Thank you, girls." "I understand what you mean about your girls being caring people, George. We sent them to eat but they worried about us not having food here in Comms." "Yes, Ed, these two are a joy to know - most of the time, anyway." Bleep! Bleep! Bleep! "Colonel Wilson. There's been another earthquake in California. I don't think we can call an 8.9 on the San Andreas an aftershock. We've lost fiber connectivity to Hawaii and to most of the seismic sensors north and west of Phoenix." "Can you get satellite images of Yellowstone?" "Only IR. The visible images are still ash, dust and steam." "Is the caldera larger than it was earlier?" "Yes sir. The IR image appears perhaps 50% larger." "This probably will be a TEOTWAWKI event. That much seismic force may very well make part of California into an island. The shift in land mass could trigger earthquakes all over North America and possibly elsewhere around the Pacific rim. This site is safe, but there are small faults across the North American continent that could be triggered by the changing stress. Keep an eye on the remaining seismic sensors. We can't change anything for the other sites but we can stay informed of their status. Ian, you should gather the TK kids and have them practice some collective object movement. I'd like to use their abilities to stop vehicles from entering this site, among other things. If any of them have tried playing ball with TK, see if they can block or divert incoming fire." "Are you sure, Colonel? Some of these kids wouldn't swat a fly." "That's true, but they need to know that we need their help. They won't be directly involved in the 'fighting' - they can help by keeping unwanted scrap metal out of the gardens." "That they can do - four of them have been keeping a 24 hour 'ash umbrella' over some of the roses. I sure they'll try to keep out the bigger stuff." "Colonel Wilson, this is Carl on the roof. There's a dozer at the gate with people tied to the front of the blade. Looks like they plan to kill the hostages by crushing them against the gate if we don't open it." "Thanks, Carl. Ian, get your kids to windows overlooking the gate, but to the sides of the entry. Have them mentally push against the sides of that dozer. If they can hold it in place or crush the tracks those hostages won't be harmed. Molly, Sarah. You get the other girls and make the drivers of the vehicles unconscious." "Poppy, he's one of the men that killed my Daddy!" "Then you stop him from hurting anyone else." Didn't know she would move that fast. Wish I had been quick enough to 'teapot' her before she crushed his skull. Glad I couldn't hear the screams that made all the others turn to see what was happening. His head looks like a watermelon hit by a .45 hollow point. Sarah will probably have difficulty with what she did, but we'll work on that later. I see the flashes of the tank guns, but nothing is making it past the fence. The TK kids are doing excellent work. "Ian, take one of the G-O-O-D vehicles out to the dozer. Back up it to the blade to provide cover, cut those people loose and bring them inside. Give the kids blankets and teddy bears - that's been the primary thing that's made them feel safe. Have Medical check every hostage. Get photos and DNA samples to verify who they are before they get out of the holding area." "Molly, Sarah. How many people are out there?" "Four adults and ten kids tied to the blade of the dozer. More of the dozers that are coming to the fence on the sides of the building." "Ian, have your kids stop the dozers before they get to the fence on the south and east sides. I think they're too far away for Molly and the others to control the drivers from here. I'll send these girls to windows that face those areas." "Will do Colonel." "George, you're not using any of the remote control weapons." "No, Ed, the chance of hitting a hostage is just too high - especially when our Ninja Mind Warriors seem able to handle things without any harm to the hostages." "What about the other dozers in the street? Those also appear to have people tied to their blades." "Those are the next targets for both TK and mind control. TK girls will let them get close enough for the mind control girls to disable the drivers. Then we can send a squad out to get the hostages." The mop-up has taken almost 2 hours, but we have rescued 38 who were missing. The hostages tell of some brutal torture given in an attempt to find a way to enter here. At least eight adults died during interrogation. Maybe letting Sarah crush that attacker's head was payment in kind - a couple of the hostages said he was one of the most sadistic interrogators. With 46 more accounted for, it may be time to close the blast doors and call this Day 1 of the new Earth. "Ed, have squads clear the grounds and the streets around the site. I want to remove as much evidence of battle as possible. When things look 'normal' here, we'll go into full lockdown - blast doors closed, shrouds lowered over the roof mounted weapons, etc. The site should look like another deserted and ash covered building. If any others make it here, we'll know by the remote for the gate. Once we're locked down, the TK girls and especially the mind warriors need some serious battle stress help. I know what works for Molly and Sarah, but today was worse than any previous engagement and all the girls need extra care. We also need to ensure that everyone is fed - it's long past lunch time for all of is and I don't know when the hostages had a decent meal." "We're in luck on the food, George. Remember the food the night you arrived?" "Pizza and fried chicken." "We have Antonio of Antonio's Pizza and Sue of Aunt Sue's Fried Chicken. Antonio was the cook for a four star general, so he can work wonders with ordinary supplies. The two of them are using the kitchen in the cafeteria on the school floor to prepare lunch for everyone. We may make the arrangement permanent with 3 meals provided daily. You mentioned how good the foods from the Asian contingent were, so we'll have them contribute also." "Very good. Right now I'd eat almost any food that wasn't moving. We need to eat in shifts so someone is here to keep watch outside and on the seismic conditions." "Take your girls and go eat now. I'll take the watch here until Ian and his girls have eaten. Lacey said she wanted me to fix something special for her and she's willing to wait." "OK, Ed, it's all yours. Molly, Sarah. Let's go eat." "What are we having, Daddy?" "I don't know, Honey, but do you remember the food we had the night we got here?" "Yummy pizza and fried chicken!" "The people who ran those restaurants were among the hostages we rescued today. They are using the kitchen in the cafeteria on the school floor to fix lunch for everyone." "Then hurry up, Daddy. I can't wait for pizza and fried chicken!" "I can't promise you what we'll be eating because I haven't heard what they're cooking." "That's OK. Today we don't have to cook." "It smells good out here in the hall..." "Hurry up and go in!" "Not yet hungry girl. The sign says 'Lunch starts at 2:15' and it's just 5 minutes after." "But you're in charge of the building, Poppy. Can't you make them hurry?" "Could we hurry the baking of Beth's cake?" "No, we had to cook it just a little longer until it was done." "We can't hurry these cooks either - they'll tell us when everything is 'done'." "OK, but I'm hungry!" "Colonel, you and your daughters can get in line now." "Dr. Zhing? I thought a couple of local restaurant owners were doing the cooking." "They are, but 'Aunt Sue' is my sister Su Ling and she recruited me and some others to do the hard work." "OK hungry girls, get your tray and get in line. We know how good Dr. Zhing's cooking is - this should be a great meal." "Look Molly, there's some of the egg stuff Dr. Zhing brought us." "I see, Sarah, and there's some of the snake that tastes like chicken enchiladas." "Eat up girls. We probably won't have another international feast like this for a long time." "Can I snuggle on your shoulder, Daddy?" "Me, too, Poppy." "I thought you would need to snuggle and I told the adults with the other girls the same - you need extra care today. Get your jammies on and brush your teeth. Don't try to tell me it's too early to go to sleep - you were up most of the night and have had a long and busy day. OK, snuggle in, heads on my shoulders." "Wah! Boo-hoo!" "Wah! Boo-hoo!" "Daddy, why is Sarah crying so hard? She's shaking all of us." "Honey, Sarah killed one of the men who killed her Daddy today. Remember that I said the mind hug could kill? Sarah crushed his head like a watermelon. "I just started to make him hurt to stop the dozer, then I saw in his mind and I saw when he killed my Daddy - I couldn't stop. I didn't mean to..to..to.." "Shhh, I know, Sweetie, you were angry and lost control of the hug. It's sometimes hard for a grownup soldier to deal with killing an enemy, so we'll spend a lot of time working out the anger and the hurt." "We?" "That's not my mind hug you feel, it's Molly's." "Wah! Boo-hoo! Hold me, Poppy, hug me tight! Don't ever let go!" "Shhh, Sarah. I'll hold you as long as you need me." +You're right, Daddy, I am tired and sleepy. Kiss me goodnight? +Lips only - and did you take your anti-nausea medication? Smooch. +I keep it by the toothpaste so I won't forget. +Very good. Good night smart girl. +Good night Daddy. Take good care of my sister. +I will. We may be here a long time tonight and I'm sure we'll be doing more of this during the day. +I love your mind hugs. +Go to bed, Honey. +Yes, Daddy. "Poppy, did you say something to me?" "No, Sarah. I was telling Molly good night." +But telling her like this. "Oh. I guess I am tired if I can't tell the difference between talking and 'talking'." "Yes, Sweetie, it's been a very long day for you." "Will you hold me 'til I'm asleep? And can I sleep with you with my head on your shoulder?" "If that's what you want." "It is. Kiss me good night?" "Yes. Lips only." Smooch. "Good night, Poppy." "Good night, Sarah." Poor little girl. Physically and mentally exhausted. Caused someone's death by her own 'hands'. This isn't supposed to happen to six year olds. She's already asleep, but her breathing is irregular - I expect to deal with nightmares multiple times tonight. Time to get the two of us in bed. Ease her down where I can watch in the mirror while I brush my teeth. Those little jerks and twitches are not a good sign. Get gently into bed, give a very soft mind hug, ease her head onto my shoulder, and put my arm around her. That's better - she's a little quieter now.
