We have food coming in." "What time is it, Sweetie?" "It's 7:45. Dr. Zhing called a few minutes ago and said he would be here at 8:00. Dr. Trang's food was so good I just can't wait for the next one to get here." Knock. Knock. "Yes?" "Colonel Wilson, this is Dr. Zhing. I have food for you and your daughters." "Please come in." "Thank you. I have the foods divided by time of day, as they would be eaten in a traditional Chinese household. Please allow me to serve you the first meal." "Thank you, Dr. Zhing. We would be honored." "Daddy, it all smells good, but what are these foods?" "Little warrior, there are English labels on each container. I wish you to know what I have prepared for you so that you can tell me which items you would like to have again." "Why did you call me 'little warrior'?" "You proved yourself to be a warrior in ability if not in size." "Really?" "Yes, really. We still do not understand how you could 'touch' people so far from your truck." +OK to tell him a little, Daddy? +Just a little. "We can extend the range of our abilities over a phone, even a cell phone." "How do you do that?" "We don't know how, just that it works." "Colonel Wilson, you asked for a family history and any stories. The names and dates are on this paper. The interesting story I will tell because no one believes me. In the year 1710 on your calendar..." "A 'star fell'... "A burned man came from the fire... "He 'told' the people how to make medicine for his burns... "He married someone's daughter and they had a lot of children... "All the children had blue eyes... "People called him 'starman' because he looked at the stars and said 'someday my children will go there'... "How do you girls know my story?" "You're not alone, Dr. Zhing; the girls have an ancestor who 'appeared' in 1710 and that's the story about him. Dr. Trang tells a very similar story." "But who were the people in the 'falling stars'"? "I think it there might have been a spacecraft from another galaxy that encountered a problem and the 'falling stars' might have been lifeboats from that craft. We know that blue eyes are not common in the western world and even rarer in other parts of the world." "So that's why you asked for the family histories. Have you received any others?" "Only a few, but it's the same story over and over with changes only in the details - where the 'falling star' landed and the name of the wife of 'starman'." "How would his children get to the stars? Some miraculous way to travel faster than light?" "We don't know, but we wonder of the ship might have been powered by their minds. Girls, the teddy bears." "How long have they been doing that?" "Just in the last day or so. It does seem a logical progression from hugging a mind to holding and lifting an object. They're limited in the size and weight of objects they can manage. So far, I've only tried about 50 pounds. I don't know if this is like physical exercise, where your 'muscles' get stronger with use." "Have you told anyone else about the telekinesis?" "Not yet. I told you because you have the alien in your family tree. I don't think either of us wants these items shared any further right now." "You're right. Even though there will soon be no scientific community to speak of, I want to maintain my reputation for hard science with no speculation. I may be descended from an alien, but I will continue to tell the world that they do not exist, and that there are no such things as mind control or telekinesis. Your secrets are safe with me. I'm glad to know that there are others with ancestors who just 'appeared' at some point in time. I think your daughters may have found some things they like, Colonel Wilson. There are some empty containers and you've had no opportunity to try those foods." "I told them that they would find things they liked in each country's foods and that has been the case. I see more food than we can eat, so I will not go hungry." "I apologize for taking so much of your time." "No, thank you for sharing your story - at least for starting it, since the girls finished it." "I saw the videos of the semis and the missiles and wondered what child would be burdened with that vicious soldier as a parent, but I've found that vicious soldier to be a caring father who stops at nothing to protect his children. I am honored to have met you, Colonel." "Goodbye Dr. Zhing, and thank you again." "Sorry you missed out on the egg stuff, Daddy. It was really good!" "I can tell - the containers have been scraped dry. Is this still a good way for the people to show their appreciation?" "I hope they keep doing it forever!" "Sorry, Sarah. They only volunteered for one day from each person. However, I think these people would be very pleased if you asked them to teach you to make the things you liked the best." "You think they would, Poppy?" "Would you and Molly show someone how to make enchiladas if they asked?" "Yes!" "Remember the nurse who stayed with Sarah when I took Molly to see Dr. Chambers? She wanted to know where the enchiladas came from but I only had time to say 'We made them'. She probably would like to have you show her how we made the enchiladas. Isn't this the same thing?" "Yes, teacher." "I hope I get that kind of response when we're in a classroom." "But classrooms aren't any fun, Daddy." "What if we use the Commissary as your classroom when you have to divide things? Or the wood in the workshop when we talk about fractions?" "But those aren't classrooms, Daddy." "They are rooms. If we have class there, they will be 'class rooms'." "Yuck on your joke, Poppy." "Finish up for now. Molly has an appointment with Dr. Chambers today." "But I was just there." "I know, she wants to tell us the results of the blood and urine tests. Because the babies are growing faster than expected, she wants to check them again." "With the thing from the freezer?" "With the ultrasound probe - but she doesn't keep it in the freezer. Put this spoon on your tummy." "It's cold!" "It hasn't been in the freezer, either, just in the drawer. Some materials, like the metal of the spoon, conduct heat very well. Tha means that they take the heat away from your skin quickly, so they seem colder that other things. Here, put this napkin on your tummy. Is it cold?" "No." "It was in the drawer next to the spoon, so it's the same temperature. The difference is in the way the material affects your skin." "Dr. Chambers really doesn't keep the ultrasound thingy in the freezer?" "No, Honey, it's just the material of the probe and the gel she puts on your skin to get a good picture that make it seem colder - like the difference in the spoon and the napkin." "Thank you, teacher." "You're welcome, student. Let's go see Dr. Chambers." "Bring Molly on back, Colonel Wilson." "Dr. Chambers, I know why the ultrasound thingy feels like it's been in the freezer. Daddy showed me how a spoon and a napkin that were in the same drawer felt different because some materials absorb heat from your skin faster than others, so they feel colder." "I think Sheila will really enjoy having your Daddy for a teacher; he does very good examples of how things work. Let's see how your babies are today. Baby number 1 is still in good position and is growing very fast - so is baby number 2. I can see some growth since your previous ultrasound. Your pregnancy probably won't last even 4 months, so you will definitely be on bed rest at 3 months - maybe sooner. You can go back to quarters, but remember your afternoon rest. I'll see you next week." "Dr. Chambers, I may have an adult for Sheila." "How do you know they'll get along?" "The adult/child pairs that I've seen all have matching eyes. I have blue eyes with gold flecks and so do Molly and Sarah. Ian McGregor has blue-green eyes and so do both his daughters. Our other teacher, Bill Jackson, has blue-gray eyes like Sheila." "Blue-gray? Her father had blue-gray eyes. I think you might have something. Does he have a child with him?" "No, he was the alternate for his niece who is with her father in Oregon." "Sheila misses her father so much. Give me Bill's number and I'll invite him for supper tonight." "Goodbye, Dr. Chambers." "Goodbye, Colonel. Thank you for Bill Jackson's number." Ring! Ring! "Wilson." "George, this is Ed. Can you come to the first heavy equipment floor? Beth was playing on an excavator and some of the machines moved. She's not hurt but she's trapped and getting more scared by the minute." "Be right there, Ed." "What's up, Daddy? You sound concerned." "Beth was playing on a heavy equipment floor and somehow some of the machines moved and she's trapped. Colonel Mason says she isn't hurt but she is scared." "We can give her mind hugs while you get her free." "Good idea, Sarah. Both of you come with me." +Beth, I'll stay with you as long as you need me. +.I will too. =Molly? Sarah? How did you know I needed someone? +Your Grandpa Ed called my Daddy and he told us, so we came to make you feel better. Would you like a hug? =But you can't reach me from out there. +I can with my mind. =I feel much safer with a hug. Can you do that too, Sarah? +.Yes, but only one of us hugs at a time. Otherwise we might hug so tight that it hurts. =That sounds like your Daddy, always being sure kids are safe. +How did you get trapped, Beth? =I was pretending to drive the machine and when I moved the lever forward and thought about it going forward it started moving and I didn't know how to stop it - I just made it go faster! +.Can you think it going backward, but very slowly? =I didn't think to try that. +Daddy, we know how Beth got trapped and we think we can get her out. Will you have all the people move away for a couple of minutes? +Yes, Honey. Can you explain? +OK if we explain after Beth is free? Sarah has a mind hug on her but she's still scared. +Go ahead. I'll have the people move. "Ed, Ian. Molly and Sarah have an idea. Let's give them room to see if they can back that thing up." "How will they do that? On second thought, I know what they did at the hostage rescue - that machine doesn't have a prayer." +All clear, girls. +.Beth, which lever made it go forward? =This one. +.Pull it back just a little and think about going backwards - but slowly. =I'm scared. +We're here to help you. You'll be OK if you listen and do exactly as we say. =OK. How much do I pull it back? +.Let it go and see where it is when you don't try to move it. Now pull it back just a butterfly kiss and think about it moving backward. Clank! Clank! =It's moving. I'm scared! +.You're doing fine, Beth. It moved backward very slowly. Do it again. Butterfly kiss on the lever and think about it moving backward. Clank! Clank! Clank! Clank! Clank! Clank! +.Let go of the lever and stop thinking about it moving. =OK. Can I get out now? +.Yes, you can get out. "OK, girls, how did you do that?" "Mr. Wilson, I was playing at driving the machine and I pushed the lever forward and thought about it moving and it started moving. I got scared and couldn't think about stopping it so it just got faster until it hit something and knocked the lever out of my hand. Then I was too scared to do anything. Molly and Sarah gave me mind hugs and asked me how I got it here. I told them and Sarah said to move pull the lever back just a butterfly kiss and to think about it moving back. And it worked! Thank you Molly and Sarah." "George, I'm still trying to catch up here. Are they saying that Beth moved a 10 ton machine with her mind?" "Did you hear an engine or smell any diesel exhaust, Ed?" "No. I guess she did it. But how?" "I think we may have discovered some differences in the girls' abilities. The blue-eyed girls have lots of communication and mind control abilities, but neither Molly nor Sarah has moved anything bigger than a teddy bear yet. They have blue eyes with gold flecks and are good at communications, mind control, and situation management. Beth has blue-green eyes and doesn't seem to have as much of the communication or control ability over people, but she has incredible telekinesis. Sheila Chambers has blue-gray eyes. From her ability to find her way, I think she may be a pilot or navigator. Maybe eye color indicates specialties and the gold flecks indicate officers - you saw how Molly and Sarah took charge of this situation. We need to check which traits are strongest in each girl and how it relates to eye color." "Eye color influeces their abilities? "No, Ed. I think their eye color is an indicator of which abilities are strongest in each person - like a badge that has unit or specialty and rank. Ian, you have blue-green eyes. Climb up in the seat, push the lever forward a little and think about that machine moving. Don't tell me it's impossible - your seven year old daughter just did it." "OK, George. I feel like a little kid playing at a construction site. OK, lever forward a little. Think about the machine moving forward..." Clank! Clank! "OK. I believe. But how?" "It's a long story and I need some family history from you and Ed. Come back to our quarters. Molly needs to rest for a while and we have enough food for a small army." "And it's yummy!" "Yes, Sarah, it is yummy." "George, what does family history have to do with this?" "Ed, do you have any ancestors who were alive in 1710?" "Yes, including one who had the middle name 'starman'." "Ian, what about you?" "I also have a 'starman' in 1710." "What's this about, George." "You want to tell the story, Sarah?" "Yes, Poppy. A 'star fell'. A burned man came from the fire. He 'told' the people how to make medicine for his burns. He married someone's daughter and they had a lot of children. All the children had blue eyes. People called him 'starman' because he looked at the stars and said 'someday my children will go there." "How do you know about me?" "Or me?" "Ed, Ian, we have an ancestor with that story." "What does it mean, George?" "Ed, I think it means that a spacecraft had problems over Earth in 1710. The people abandoned ship in lifeboats that weren't quite able to handle our atmosphere - or maybe some of the people didn't have enough telekinesis - so the lifeboats got too hot. It appears that even very advanced civilizations can't foresee every possible problem. The area around the lifeboat burned and the passenger was burned either in the descent or while exiting the lifeboat. These people had mental abilities that the 'Earthlings' didn't have and were able to learn the language and/or use mental control to get the burn medication they needed - we know there are some incredible 'home remedies' in specific areas of the world. Once healed, the aliens married the local people and had children - all with blue eyes, and I think all the blue hues such as blue-green or blue-gray or blue-whatever eyes may have been called 'blue' in the records. The alien genes are stronger than the human genes, so their traits are dominant - including eye color, mind control, telekinesis, and navigation. If Beth can move 10 tons, what could a crew of adults move? The alien ship may have carried only people and supplies - no fuel would have been needed for propulsion. Think of a moon shot with just the orbiter and the lander and no fuel in either of those, but with nearly unlimited motive power. If we had a space-rated craft, in a few years we would be able to go almost anywhere in the galaxy. We need to find more people like Sheila who appear to be descended from the navigators and pilots - they may be able to 'read' the stars and planets and find an Earth-equivalent planet." "George, I need to sit down. You've just made scrambled eggs of Newton's laws and hash browns of Einstein's theories, but it almost makes sense. A craft powered by minds could have the incredible acceleration and turning ability attributed to some of the reported UFO's." "Yes, Ed, and we have a possible explanation for the places on Earth where those UFO's have been seen. If they're looking for the descendants of their lost ancestors, then those descendants are working in the highest tech areas, both military and civilian. A jet fighter is the closest we have to a 'thought-powered' machine, so they are being investigated to see whether the pilot is 'family'. You seem lost in thought, Ian." "I knew some pilots who seemed to 'wear' their aircraft. They knew exactly where the nose and tail and wingtips were at all times. They knew a fraction of a second before the craft would stall. They were never lost, even if the navigation equipment was inoperable. They all had blue-gray eyes." "Ed, where could we find spacecraft leftover from NASA - or find a facility and materials to build some large spacecraft of our own design? Something to hold maybe 500 people." "There may still be some facilities in Florida and Texas, George, but materials may be scattered all over the country. How would we get them in one location? Nothing will run in this ash. Oh, we don't need engines, just people with TK to move the materials - and we don't need cranes or forklifts. Even big forming presses could be operated by TK. I guess that a bridge being out because of an earthquake wouldn't be a problem either." "We need a plan for detecting and training our TK kids - and all the others - and a way to determine what other skill categories there are. We need to estimate the number of people that will be on site each year and how many of each skill we would have. At some point, we'll have enough 'engines', and pilots, and navigators - and whatever other categories we discover - to fly a spacecraft away from Earth to our next planetary home." "George, how do we break this to the other sites? I don't know how these people will handle being told they are descended from aliens." "Ed, we'll do family trees on as many people as we can - here and at the other sites. We'll combine the common stories and see if there's enough info to support our hypothesis. We'll post charts of the families with a 1710 'event'. There should be enough commonality to eliminate most of the 'it's not possible' comments. Having some of the girls drive heavy equipment that's obviously diesel and obviously not fueled should also reduce skepticism." "When do you plan to spring this on people, George?" "The idea of building a spacecraft? Not for at least 10 years, Ed. We need 12 year olds who can do most of the physical work - including serious TK - before we can start that kind of building project. We'll talk about 'What if we had a spacecraft?' a lot sooner and let the kids brainstorm ways to build and equip the ship and how they would house and feed hundreds of people for a voyage that might last several years. We need to grow the population more, find the various abilities - whatever they may be - and how to enhance them, educate our children in the three R's plus some things that would have been science fiction for us a week ago. We also need to get the hydroponics working soon, even if it's just on a small scale - we'll need to feed the people who travel on our spacecraft. Meanwhile, we can look for every eye color in our databases that might be some variation of blue - including gray that might be blue-gray and even purple, I guess - and see what abilities are associated with each of the hues. We can research the various space programs - US, Russia, Europe, whoever - and see what facilities might be useable and where materials may have been left so we can plan future foraging missions." "Then what do we do now?" "I don't know about you, Ian, but I have two little girls that I need to praise for being caring, intelligent, and creative in resolving Beth's problem. Tomorrow Bill Jackson and I will start revising lesson plans. We have a few years before we'll be building spacecraft, but I think a map of the galaxy would be a good addition to every classroom. It might even help us determine which kids are pilots and navigators." +You want to do some kissy-face, girls? +Yes! +.Yes!
