Chapter Thirty-Two - The Dream Comes True

Dave woke shortly after six o'clock after a very restful sleep. He had dreamt
about being together with both Jennifer and Katherine and he had a raging hard-
on when he woke. He got up and went to the bathroom before he went to the
fitness room. He decided not to work with weights today but instead just ride
the bike. He rode the bike hard for thirty minutes before jumping in the pool
for a short brisk ten minute swim.

He was back in the room by seven and as he stood in the shower his mind wondered
back to his dream of his beautiful blonde girlfriend between his black haired
girl's legs. His raging hard-on was back and he couldn't resist stroking
himself to a wonderful orgasm.

He finished cleaning his hair and body before exiting the shower relaxed and
ready for a big day playing a round with Vijay Singh. He brushed his hair and
his teeth before he walked out of the bathroom. Roger was just waking and
stumbled into the bathroom still half asleep. Dave dressed while his father
showered and was watching a sports channel when Roger emerged from the bathroom
rejuvenated.

They ate a good breakfast before driving to the golf course. Dave went straight
to the practice range and hit balls for forty-five minutes before going to the
practice green and putting. The number of pros around today was significantly
fewer. Dave felt good about his putting when his name was called with Vijay
Singh to report to the first tee.

Dave strode to the tee with Roger right beside him. Dave was full of confidence
and ready to compete. Vijay was already at the first tee and as Dave walked
onto the tee he shook the man's hand. Dave was surprised that Vijay was almost
as tall as him and looked to be a very similar weight. He also noticed the
heavy accent which he knew came from Vijay's native Fiji Islands.

After exchanging cards and well wishes with Vijay, Dave walked to his father and
got his driver out to take a few practice swings. After the group in front of
them reached the first green the PGA official announced Vijay's name and the
highlights of his victories. There was a large crowd around the tee and they
applauded Vijay after his introduction. Vijay hit a perfect and long drive down
the middle of the first hole.

The official announced Dave's name and listed his recent tournament results.
The crowd cheered even louder for Dave. Dave moved onto the tee and placed his
tee in the ground. He stood behind the ball in his normal pre-shot routine.
After deciding on his line he stood over the ball and visualized his shot. He
drew the club back and hit a huge drive down the first hole - the ball started
down the right center of the fairway and drew to the left center. The ball
rolled twenty yards past Vijay's big drive and as the crowd went crazy, Dave
heard that familiar, "You're the man, Dave."

Dave picked up his tee and smirked at his father. Roger grinned back and took
the driver and placed it back in Dave's golf bag. Dave and Roger strode down
the first hole fairway side-by-side. They reached Vijay's ball first and it was
right beside the one hundred yard marker. Dave looked at his ball twenty yards
farther and immediately decided he would hit a partial pitching wedge shot. He
briefly thought about his vacation in England and how he had learned to play
partial wedge shots in order to play the bump and run style common in England.
He briefly thought about Sarah and Roxanne but was shaken from his reverie when
he heard the crowd cheer Vijay's great shot. Dave looked at the green and saw
Vijay's ball very close to the hole.

Dave walked over to his ball and tore some grass from the ground and threw it in
the air to confirm the strength and direction of the wind. While Dave was
confirming the wind, Roger stepped off Dave's distance and informed him that he
had seventy-two yards to the front of the green and the hole was fifteen feet
from the front and five feet from the left side. Dave noticed that a large
portion of the fans that had been standing around the first tee had followed
them down the fairway. He wondered if they were following him or Vijay.

Dave pulled out his pitching wedge and decided a nine o'clock swing on his
distance gauge would be appropriate. Dave focused on his shot, visualized the
flight of the ball then drew the club back smoothly. He drove through the shot
and nipped the ball off the short fairway grass. The ball landed three feet
past and one foot right of the hole; it took one bounce then sucked straight
back finishing one foot from the hole. The crowd cheered much louder than they
had for Vijay and Dave waved thanks to them as he handed his wedge to his father
who passed him his putter. Dave strode to the first green brimming with
confidence. He now knew the fans were mostly supporting him and that made him
feel even better.

Dave and Vijay sank their short birdie putts. Both players seemed to feed off
each other's good play and, when they eventually walked off the eighteenth
green, both had shot incredible five under par sixty-five's. Dave and Vijay
shook hands and Vijay told Dave he really enjoyed playing with him. They walked
to the scorer's tent together and, after verifying and signing their cards, they
wished each other luck on the final day.

Randy was smiling at Dave as he exited the scorer's tent and Dave simply nodded
and walked behind the RCGA official. Roger walked right beside him until they
reached the entrance. Dave immediately noticed that the crowd of reporters was
even larger today and he took his seat behind the microphones. The same RCGA
official who had introduced him the previous two days repeated his introduction
then invited a question.

The first reporter stood up and asked, "Dave, your bio says you are only sixteen
and will turn seventeen very shortly. Did you ever imagine that you would come
to a PGA sanctioned event as a sixteen year old and shoot the lowest round
currently recorded in the tournament?"

Dave grinned and replied, "A little over a year ago I was dreaming of just
making the QAI junior team. This whole year and in particular this tournament
is beyond imagination."

The official pointed at another reporter who asked, "You and Vijay seemed to
feed off each other out there today. Do you think you helped each other play
well?"

Dave answered, "Vijay Singh is an incredible golfer. To tell you the truth last
night when I found out I was playing with him I was surprised that I had played
as well as a player of his caliber. I came to the course very confident and the
huge supportive crowd helped me a lot as well. But to answer your question I
would definitely say we challenged each other, today. I know I was telling
myself that if I could compete with Vijay I could play with anyone." Dave then
smiled and elaborated, "And I bet Vijay was saying, "I can't let this kid beat
me.""

The reporters laughed before the official pointed to another reporter. The
interview continued for fifteen minutes with more and more reporters waving
their arms to ask questions. The official eventually announced, "The last
question will go to Steve Robinson from ESPN."

Steve looked at Dave and asked, "You said yesterday that you are planning on
going to college next year. After your very strong showing this week have you
considered turning pro immediately?"

Dave faked a thoughtful look and looked over at his father whose face had turned
very pale with concern. Dave immediately laughed into the microphones, "If you
look to the right side of the room you will see a man whose face is as white as
a sheet and he looks like he is about to be nauseous. That is my father and as
you can tell he is mortified by your suggestion." Dave laughed again as all the
reporters stared at his father and most began laughing. Dave continued, "Dad
and I have talked about my future extensively and we both agree that a college
education is very important and will definitely be my priority next year. No, I
do not intend to change my plans." Dave smiled at his father, "You can start
breathing again, Dad."

The reporters laughed again and the same reporter pleaded with the RCGA official
for a follow up question. The RCGA official nodded so Steve asked, "How does
your father rank as a caddy?"

Dave grinned and replied, "I could easily make a joke and Dad would know I was
just having fun but the truth is I have had a spectacular week here in Hamilton
and I owe it all to my Dad." Dave's eyes got misty as he elaborated, "I have
watched and idolized a lot of the golfers I am now playing with and that is
great but having my father, who is my true hero, carrying my bag and helping me
is the best dream I could ever have." With a tear running down Dave's check he
turned towards his father and finished with, "Thanks, Dad." After a short pause
Dave added, "Thanks to Mom too. She's my hero as well."

The whole room was so silent Dave could hear himself breathing. He looked at
the reporters who looked at him and then at his father. Finally the RCGA
official broke the silence with, "Thank you, Dave."

Dave stood and nodded to the reporters before he walked to his father and hugged
him. They left the tent together. Vijay was standing at the entrance and he
simply patted Dave on the shoulder as Dave walked out with his arm around his
father.

Once they were out of the tent Dave whispered, "I meant every word of that, Dad.
Thank you for supporting and loving me. I owe everything to you and Mom."

Roger simply answered, "Thanks Dave, you make us proud too." Roger felt a need
to change the subject and added, "Let's go eat, I'm starved."

Dave and his dad drove to a steakhouse. As they entered the restaurant a man
with his son walked up to Dave and asked for his autograph. Dave nodded and
signed the paper. He asked them if they played golf and both nodded. Dave
looked at the boy who looked to be about ten years old. Dave explained, "I had
to practice a lot to get as good as I am and I still have to practice a lot to
maintain my game, so don't forget to practice, okay?" The boy nodded excitedly
and the man thanked Dave as they walked away.

Dave grinned at Roger as they entered the restaurant. They ate a large meal
before going back to the hotel. Dave watched the results of the open for an
hour and was disappointed to see that Chris Baryla had struggle and shot
seventy-seven. The last groups were still on the course when Dave decided to go
to the fitness room and workout. He was really pumped from his day on the
course so he did a full workout before getting on the bicycle and riding hard
for forty minutes. His legs were like rubber as he climbed off the bike and
after a ten minute rest he climbed in the pool and pushed himself hard for
another thirty minutes.

As he exited the pool he saw a familiar face sitting in a lounger. He smiled at
Jeff Sluman and asked, "How did you do today, Jeff?"

Jeff grinned back at Dave and replied, "Not nearly as well as you. That was a
helluva round you played today - sixty-five, wow." Dave nodded thanks as Jeff
continued, "I shot seventy-one which puts me six strokes behind you. Charles
Howell III was just having a fair day but Tanaka was playing good when I left so
I imagine he will be the player to catch. You're going to be close though."

Jeff then nodded at the pool, "I see you're still working out hard. Your eyes
have pretty well cleared up as well."

Dave agreed, "Yes my eyes are better and I find working out helps keep my mind
off golf."

Jeff and Dave talked about the course and about their rounds in detail. After a
half hour Dave finally said he had to get back to his room. They wished each
other luck as Dave left. Dave thought how incredible it was to talk to Jeff
Sluman just the way he would a fellow junior after a local tournament.

In the room Roger was still watching TSN. He told Dave that Tanaka finished at
seven under par, two stokes ahead of Dave. Dave was tied with Brad Faxon, Fred
Funk, Tom Pernice Jr. and Charles Howell III for second. Dave called the course
and found out he was in the second last group at 1:45 and he was playing with
Brad Faxon. Dave just shook his head as he thought about playing with Faxon -
he still couldn't believe he was competing with the best in the world.

Dave and Roger ordered a pizza for supper then relaxed and watched a movie.
Just before bedtime Dave called Jennifer and she was very excited for him. He
asked how school was going and she told him good. They talked for fifteen
minutes before Dave told her he loved her and would see her soon.

He then called Katherine and she was really excited explaining that she watched
all the highlights of his round and his interview. She told him how handsome he
looked in his dress pants and how his eyes looked much better. He asked how the
Missiles were doing and she said they won an exhibition game the night before.
Dave told her he loved her and would see her Monday at school. He and Roger
were flying home Monday morning and because Dave had already missed the first
week, he was going right to school. Katherine said she loved him and would see
him there.

Roger then called Carol and Dave spoke to her. She was very proud of him and
thanked him for his comments about her and Roger. Dave told her he loved her
and would see her on Monday. Roger spoke for a half hour before he eventually
hung up and they turned out the lights.

Dave thought a lot about being tied for second place. He tossed and turned for
a couple hours before he focused on Jennifer and Katherine and managed to fall
asleep. He slept fairly well and didn't wake until shortly after seven. He got
up, went to the fitness room, and did a mild workout before he jumped on the
bike and cycled for twenty-five minutes. He then climbed in the pool and swam
for twenty minutes. He was tired but not worn out when he exited the pool.

He went back to his room and showered. Roger was already awake and had
showered. Dave finished his shower and got dressed. He started to feel nervous
as he pulled on his dress pants and his Hornsby golf shirt. He and Roger went
out to a restaurant for breakfast. Dave managed to eat a good meal before they
went to the course. Dave hit practice balls for ninety minutes before putting
for an hour. He was getting more and more nervous as his tee time seemed to
take forever to arrive. Roger suggested they get away from the course for a
while so they went to get something to eat. Dave hardly ate as his stomach
didn't feel settled enough to keep the food down. They returned at twelve
thirty and Dave was still anxious to start playing.

He went back to the practice range and hit balls to make sure he was still loose
then returned to the putting green and hit a few more putts. He found time was
going very slow and he was happy when he finally heard his name called to the
first tee. He and Roger walked there and met Brad Faxon. Dave and Brad
exchanged cards and waited for the group in front of them to get on the first
green.

Dave finally heard his name called to the first tee. The RCGA official then
announced Dave's recent tournament results. Dave was nervous but he felt
confident. He pushed the tee into the ground and went through his pre-shot
routine. He pulled his driver back and hit a good solid drive down the left
side of the fairway. The fans roared their approval and Dave was happy to be
off the first tee in good shape.

Brad went through his routine and hit a solid drive which finished just short of
Dave's ball. Dave and Roger strode up the first hole confidently. Dave could
still feel his stomach churning but it was starting to fade. He waited for Brad
to hit first and after Brad hit his ball on the green, Dave approached his ball.
Roger had stepped off the distance and told Dave, "One hundred and five yards to
the front of the green - and the pin is eight feet from the front and ten feet
from the right."

Dave nodded and asked for his sixty-degree wedge. A full sixty should put him
where he wanted. He took a smooth swing and hit a good shot. The ball landed
pin high and sucked back six feet. Dave was left with a six foot uphill birdie
put. The crowd cheered loudly and Dave waved thanks you to them. Roger handed
him his putter and he strolled up the fairway to the green.

He marked his ball and waited for Brad to putt first. Brad had a twelve foot
long putt and after he lined it up he rolled the putt just short. He tapped in
for par. Dave stood over his putt and felt confident he could start with a
birdie. He pulled the putter straight back but he missed the putt an inch to
the right of the hole and as the crowd let out a loud "AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!" Dave
stared at his ball in disbelief. He thought he had hit it right. He walked to
the hole and tapped in for par.

The whole front nine was like the first hole. He hit good shots but he couldn't
make any putts. He missed five relatively short birdie putts and finished one
over par. He looked at the leader board after the ninth hole and his name had
dropper to the middle. He looked at Roger who said, "Relax Dave, you're hitting
good golf shorts but the putter isn't working. Just keep focused on your game
and your putter will come around."

Dave hoped his father was right but unfortunately he wasn't and Dave continued
to make par after par and watch his name slowly inch lower on the leader board.
When Dave reached the par-five seventeenth hole he was two over for the day and
three under for the tournament. Brad Faxon had played really well and he was
seven under par for the tournament - four strokes ahead of Dave. Dave watched
Brad hit a good drive up the par-five seventeenth fairway. Dave stood over his
ball and he tagged a huge drive. The crowd went crazy as usual and Dave strode
up the fairway confidently.

Brad laid up on his second shot and his ball finished right next to the hundred
yard marker. Dave was only two hundred and twenty yards from the hole and he
selected his four-iron. He took a long full swing and the ball sailed onto the
green and rolled to within fifteen feet of the hole. The crowd cheered wildly.

Brad hit a great wedge shot within eight feet of the hole before they walked to
the green side-by-side. The huge crowd around the green cheered for both
golfers. Dave lined up his putt and hit a solid stroke but the ball rolled
around the lip and finished an inch from the hole. Dave shook his head in
disbelief as he tapped in for birdie. Brad lined his putt up and rolled it dead
center for a solid birdie. He was now tied with Bob Tway at eight under par.
Bob had already finished and was the clubhouse leader.

Dave and Brad moved to the final hole and the crowd around the tee was huge -
the biggest Dave had seen all week. After Brad hit a big drive, Dave walked
onto the tee. The crowd was screaming support and Dave wondered if they would
ever quiet down but as soon as he stood over his ball, the crowd went totally
silent. Dave was pumped from all the cheering and he pulled the driver back and
absolutely crushed his drive. The ball rocketed off the tee and the crowd
roared approval. Dave heard dozens of "You're the man, Dave." His ball landed
on the left side of the fairway well past Brad's drive and then the ball rolled
even farther.

As Dave and Brad walked off the tee Brad said, "Huge drive, Dave."

Dave thanked him as he waited for his father to catch up. Roger was smiling
proudly at his son and whispered, "Jesus, you tagged that one." Dave just
smiled and nodded.

Brad's ball was just inside the one-hundred-and-fifty-yard marker. He hit a
good approach shot onto the green fifteen feet from the hole. Dave's ball was
almost to the hundred yard marker and while Roger was walking off the distance
Dave briefly looked at Brad who simply shook his head in disbelief of Dave's
huge drive that had traveled over three hundred and forty yards. Dave pulled
out his sixty-degree wedge after Roger told him it was one hundred and four
yards.

Dave put a smooth swing on the ball and it landed just past the pin and spun
back right at the hole. Dave knew it was close and the enormous crowd around
the green let out a huge sigh as the ball rolled over the lip and somehow
stopped only one half inch from the hole. Dave could tell by the crowd's
reaction that it was close but didn't go in. He exchanged his wedge for a
putter and walked to the green receiving a huge ovation from the crowd. As he
neared the green he couldn't believe how close the ball was and an official said
the ball rolled right over the lip but wouldn't drop. Dave smiled ruefully at
the man and said, "That's the way the whole day has gone."

Roger set Dave's clubs down and walked to the hole to remove the pin. Dave
tapped the easy birdie putt in and the crowd cheered loudly. The crowd then
quieted down while Brad lined up his potential winning birdie putt. He made a
good stroke but the ball fell off line and finished a foot below the hole. He
tapped in for an easy par. Dave looked at the leader board. Tway and Faxon
were tied at eight under par with only Pernice and Tanaka still on the course.
Tanaka was two strokes back and Pernice was one. Dave was tied for eight with
Loren Roberts and Matt Gogel. He finished one stroke ahead of Mike Weir.

Brad walked to Dave and shook his hand. He said, "You hit the ball really well,
Dave. I look forward to playing on the tour with you in the future. Thanks for
the great day."

Dave replied, "Thanks Brad, I really enjoyed the day as well. Good luck in the
playoff."

They walked into the scorer's tent and reviewed their cards.

As Dave exited the tent, Randy was, as had become usual, waiting so Dave simply
smiled and followed him to the media tent. Dave answered questions for fifteen
minutes. He explained that he was pleased with his round but very disappointed
he just couldn't get his putter going. He further explained that the whole
tournament was a tremendous experience and he thanked the RCGA and the PGA for
the opportunity. He and Roger exited the media tent and went right back to the
hotel. Dave didn't feel like waiting around to watch the playoff.

Back at the hotel, Dave lied down and rested - he was mentally exhausted. His
putter was off all day and he really had to grind to shoot an even par seventy.
He was really happy with his play but he kept asking himself, "What if my putter
had been working?" In the end he dozed off to sleep and Roger let him snooze
for an hour.

He woke up at eight o'clock and Roger suggested they go out for supper. They
went to nice restaurant and Dave had over a dozen people come up to him and talk
about his golf. He thanked them politely and signed autographs before they went
on their way.

When they returned to the hotel Dave called both Jennifer and Katherine. They
said they were proud of him and had watched him on television. They said the
commentators kept asking if he was really only sixteen and commenting about the
bright future he had. Dave laughed and said he would be glad just to finish
high school - he wasn't ready to think about being a golf superstar yet.
Katherine told him that Roberts and Gogel each received $125,000 US for eighth
place. Dave shook his head as he wished he could have taken his share. He told
Katherine he would see her at school.

Roger then called Carol and she congratulated Dave and said she would see him at
the airport in the morning. Dave said goodbye and Roger spoke to Carol for a
while before turning off the light and going to sleep.

Dave slept well that night and when the wakeup call rang at four o'clock, he and
Roger both jumped out of bed. They showered quickly then took their bags to the
front desk and checked out. The drive to the airport was quiet as they both
struggle to wakeup at the early hour. They arrived at the airport just before
six o'clock and after checking their luggage they found a restaurant and ate
breakfast. They boarded the plan just before seven and were in the air shortly
after.

The flight home passed quickly. Dave read the Toronto newspaper, The Globe and
Mail and his picture was splashed on both the front page and sports page. The
headline read "Young Canadian Golfer Finishes Eighth". After reading the
article Dave talked with the businessman sitting beside him. The man was flying
to QAI for a meeting and asked where Dave was from. Dave said he was from QAI
and was returning from the Canadian Open. The man looked at Dave again and
asked, "That is your picture in the paper isn't it? You're the junior who
almost beat the pros."

Dave simply nodded and the man explained how he had watched some of the Open but
missed the final round the previous day. He said he heard on the radio how Dave
finished in the top ten. He congratulated Dave and they talked about golf the
entire trip.

After the plane landed Dave said goodbye to the man and then he and Roger walked
off the plane together. It was a sunny September morning and Dave and Roger
walked side-by-side into the airport. As soon as they walked through the door
they were greeted by a loud applause and Dave immediately saw a large sign,
"Welcome Home Dave". Katherine jumped into his arms and he held her close as he
looked over her shoulder at the large crowd of supporters. All his family was
there including both Alan and Robert's entire families. All of Dave's closest
friends were there including John. Dave was also surprised and happy to see the
entire Missile team.

He pulled away from Katherine and briefly hugged his mother before he made his
way through the crowd shaking everyone's hand and thanking them for coming out.
Katherine was at his side the whole time holding his left hand while he shook
with his right hand. When he reached his mother again he hugged her very close
and told her he loved her. She kissed his check and repeated that she was very
proud of him.

The crowd slowly dispersed and Dave stood at the door thanking them all again
for coming to see him. When the last person left, Dave followed his family out
of the airport. It was just after twelve o'clock so they went to Dave's house
and made a quick meal before Dave, Julie, Beth, and Katherine went to school.

At the school Dave received congratulations from his school friends. He made
his way to the office where the vice principal gave him his schedule. He was
happy that he was in two classes with Katherine. He went to class and his
teacher congratulated him before eventually starting to teach. Each class
seemed to start the same way - the teachers would congratulate Dave and the
students would talk about his great performance for a few moments then the
teacher would begin to lecture.

Dave had a Missile practice right after school so he dropped Katherine off and
went right to the rink. Practice went well and Dave felt the workouts had
helped keep him in shape. He returned home just after six o'clock. When he
pulled up to the house there were three unfamiliar cars parked in front and he
wondered what was going on; all three had the look of standard rental cars. As
he walked in the back door his mother met him and explained, "Dave, there are
three men here to speak to you about college golf."

Dave asked, "Are they just general recruiters?"

His mother knew what he meant and replied, "No, I think they are the actual
coaches."

Dave's jaw dropped in surprise and he quickly walked into the living room. The
three men were sitting talking with his father. When Dave entered the men stood
and took turns shaking his hand and introducing themselves. One was from Duke,
where Dave already had an appointment to see the campus, and the other two were
from LSU and Arizona.

Roger seemed to have everything organized. Dave, Roger, Carol, and the coach
from Duke went into the television room and closed the door.

The process was pretty much the same for each coach. They offered full
scholarships and pushed the strong points of their golf program and their
school's education program. Each meeting took about a half hour. It was almost
eight o'clock when the last coach left and Dave was bouncing around with
excitement.

Julie had answered the phone while Dave was in the meetings and when he exited
she said there were four more coaches staying at local hotels who wanted to meet
with him the next night. The Canadian Open had made him the top prospect in all
of the US and the coaches were flocking to him to convince him to join their
programs. Dave hugged his sister before he explained what Julie said to his
father. Roger just chuckled and said, "Dave, you have what you wished for - you
can choose pretty well any college in Canada or the US you want."

Dave nodded agreement - this was a dream, a dream come true.

He called Katherine and they talked for over an hour on the phone. He told her
about the coaches he met with. She was very happy for him. Then they talked
about school and the upcoming year. After he hung up he went right to bed tired
from the trip and the tough hockey practice.

As he lay in bed he realized that the summer was now over and so, for the most
part, was his golf for that year. He thought about the coaches' visits and how
he could now attend the college of his choice. He had wished and dreamed about
a US College Scholarship for so long that he got shivers just thinking about it
finally happening. He fell asleep thinking about which college to visit first
and how he would work the visits into his hockey schedule.

Life was indeed a dream for Dave MacDonald - an incredible dream.

The End
