Insider Information - Sequel to "Implant" - Chapter 1 By - The StoryMaster "I'm tellin' you Stu, this is the coolest thing you ever saw," Danny Morris spoke excitedly into the phone. "Your brother's old computer! Big deal! What, is it a 286?" Danny's best friend replied sarcastically. "This is no bullshit, Stu," Danny countered. "My big brother knows what he's doing with computers." Then after a moment's thought. "You got a brother in MIT, smart ass?" Stuart Worthington didn't have an answer to that. "You gotta get over here right now and help me with this, OK?" Danny practically pleaded with his friend. Stuart might be a smart ass, but he wasn't bad with computers himself. He and Danny just recently entered and won the state science fair with some radio control software they'd developed. The two young men were considered to be quite gifted by their teachers, but like most thirteen year old boys, they were not interested in concentrating on their futures just now. They much preferred to focus their attentions on the young ladies in their school, however like so many bright young men, both Danny and Stuart lacked the physical attractiveness and athletic prowess necessary to attract the attention of teenage girls bent on attracting and bagging the more dapper young men in school. In fact, the unfortunate ungainliness that the two boys shared tended to cause them to be the focus of a good bit of negative attention, not only by classmates of their own gender, but by the girls as well. "Your sister really pisses me off, Danny," Stuart Worthington confided in his friend. The two boys sat on the dusty floor of the musty smelling attic. "Yeah, I know," Danny replied absent mindedly as he removed another curious looking component from the big wooden crate and set it next to the others. He'd discovered the crate and its curious treasures in a dark corner of the rarely visited upper room just yesterday. "She can be a real bitch sometimes, that's for sure. Ever since Hunter started dating that asshole Butch Meekin, she's gotten really full of herself." "No kidding," Stuart replied, nodding absently. His thoughts drifted off to a happier place. A place where the beautiful Hunter Morris loved him and him only. Stuart would never dream of telling his best friend just exactly how he felt about his sixteen year old sister. Those thoughts and desires Stuart kept to himself in a special place that no one could touch. It hurt him to no end that Hunter was so mean to him, but every day he forgave her, hoping that the next time they met things would be different. But they never were. This afternoon, for example, Hunter had distracted him, flirting with Stuart with her winning smile while Butch Meekin stole up behind him and gave him a serious wedging. The spiteful glimmer in Hunter's eyes following the hurtful act had crushed his heart like a ripe melon. Stuart had fled in shame. "Hey, check this out," Danny said, holding up a four inch thick three ring binder solidly crammed with print outs. After blowing the dust off the folder, causing them both to sneeze, Danny dropped the heavy documents onto the floor and the two friends crowded over it." "Transmitter specs?" Stuart read from the top page. Danny flipped to the next page. "Far out!" Stuart exclaimed as his eyes scanned over a complex schematic diagram. In addition to computers, Stuart Worthington also had a thing for radios and the like. He was the youngest member of the local Amateur Radio club, and prided himself in his collection of kit radios that he'd built all by himself. "Looks like 900 MHz stuff," the young man muttered, tracing a circuit with his finger. Danny was already getting bored. He had very little interest in radio equipment. His interests lay more in computers. Leaving Stuart to study the schematic, he turned attention to the sizeable array of apparatus that he'd unpacked from the big crate. There was one large case that had to be the CPU. Several cables were still attached to the ports on its rear panel. "My brother, Raymond built this whole thing from scratch," Danny Morris murmured to no one in particular. He lovingly caressed the top of a 17 inch monitor that sat next to his right knee. "I remember how excited he was about all this stuff. Even Dad helped him with his 'big project'. Hell, even Mr. Cooper, the principle of the school got into the act. You remember that, Stu?" he asked his young friend. "This is really weird stuff," Stuart muttered to himself. "Stuart, will you listen to me," Danny said in an exasperated tone of voice. He hated it when people ignored him. "Huh?" Stuart responded, looking at his friend. "I asked you if you remember all the commotion that went on about my brother's project?" "I, dunno. I.. I guess so," Stuart replied distractedly, his eyes pulled toward the diagrams and formulas contained on the next page of the heavy notebook. "Man, I sure do," Danny went on in spite of his friend's distinct lack of enthusiasm. "I remember Dad got drunk for almost the whole month. And that weird doctor started coming around. You gotta remember that dude. He was bizarre as hell!" For several minutes Danny sat, lost in thought while beside him, his friend poured over the pages of notes and diagrams. Danny continued as though Stuart was listening intently to every word he was saying. "That's when my big brother first got lucky too," Danny recalled, his eyes becoming hazy and distant. "Kimberly Johnson," he whispered reverently. "Huh?" Stuart said. The mention of a girl always got the young man's attention. "I was just remembering the day that Ray first brought Kimberly Johnson home. Nobody could believe it," he said, shaking his head. "Kimberly was the hottest girl in school, and let's face it, my brother, Ray was no Mick Jagger." Danny sat silently enjoying the mental picture of the gorgeous blond teenager. "Yeah, that was pretty strange," Stuart agreed. Kimberly Johnson was going with Gary Orders all year and then, BAM! She dropped him like a stone and started hanging around with your brother. Weird, man. Your brother was one lucky dude." The two boys nodded in agreement. "He sure was," said Danny. "Kimberly started comin' over every day, I remember. Then one day she brought that Danielle bitch with her. And that's when that weird doctor started hanging around. And then Mom started acting really strange. I guess I didn't notice it so much then, but now that I think about it, everyone was acting really peculiarly. Dad just stayed drunk, and Mom let Raymond run the house. He and that doctor 'what's-his-name' had all kinds of parties, and there were always tons of girls around." The two boys sat in silence for a long while. Then breaking the silence at last, Danny summed it all up. "Weird," he said. "Yeah, weird," Stuart agreed. "Anyway, gimme a hand with this stuff. Let's carry it down to my room where we can work on it, OK?" "OK," Stuart replied, "but then I gotta get home. I've got a ton of homework to do." Continued...
