"I thought his weight would crush me!"

"Shut up!"

"No, seriously. You might think buff is good, but muscle weighs
more than fat, ya know."

Crystal stuck her tongue out at the phone. "Yes, I know, I have
Mr. Morrison for gym, too. Back to you and Ted."

Penny laughed and Crystal could picture her just as if they
were in the same room. Penny with her gypsy-dark eyes, full lips
and petite frame.

"There's not much more to tell. He grunted a couple of times,
and then collapsed on me. That's it."

Crystal sighed with envy. Penny was always the lucky one. She
could have had any skinny, or fat, or ugly boy in the ninth
grade, but she chose Ted. He was the star quarterback of the
football team, good-looking and popular. Not surprising Penny
had set her sights for him - like chooses like.

Crystal rolled over on her back and stared at the ceiling. "So
was it all icky and gross?"

"Not really. There was a little bit of blood, but not like
they make it out to be in those films we saw in health class. I
made him wear a condom, too."

It still seemed thrilling and edgy and risqué to Crystal. She
was still a virgin; was probably one of the only ones left at
their school, the way some of the girls talked. She didn't care.
Better to be a virgin, than a pregnant drop out.

"You sure you're okay with me going out with him?" Penny asked,
a hint of worry in her voice.

"Of course, I told you that already."

"I didn't tell him you have a crush on him. I swear."

"Had, Penny, past tense. Now, you going to go out with him
again? And do it?" She put a teasing note into the last part.

"I don't know, Ted's cute and all, but it just wasn't what I
thought it was going to be. And knowing Ted, he'll want it every
time we go out."

"Oh, well I've gotta run, Penny. See you tomorrow, right?"

"Sure, bye."

"Bye." Crystal clicked the "off" button on the phone and tossed
it aside.

"Well, what did she say?" Ted sat in Crystal's computer chair,
an anxious look on his face.

"She couldn't stop raving about how great you were and how she
can't wait to go out with you again."

"Yes, I knew it!" He jumped up, a big smile on his face.
"Thanks, Crys, I owe you one."

Crystal walked to the window and watched as he ran home, to the
house across from hers.

A few weeks back she'd confessed to Penny of her long-time
crush on Ted, the "boy next door since forever." Two days later,
Penny and Ted were going out.

Crystal smiled. Good friends were so hard to find.
