                                        Man in a Shallow Grave
                                            by Lisa Longworth

Let no-one mourn his death, say I
Lest they forget
and turn their backs on decency,
Pitying he that lies there in that shallow grave
unmourned by moral people.

Let him lie there, undisturbed,
while his sins are washed clean
by winter rains.
Allow him to pass over to eternity
alone.

While the dogs devour him,
picking his cracked bones clean
with their laughing teeth,
grinning at moons sailing
in stormy summer night skies.

Let the open wound on
the earth in which he rests
stand as mute testament
to the sins he has committed
in the name of God.

And if this sight disturbs you,
good people, moves you to tears or grief,
Then simply take the high road
and turn your backs
on he who lies there.
