                                        Andrew Roller Presents

                                                GIRL PATROL

                                          Chapter Thirty-One

In the darkness it had not been apparent, but now in the warm glow
of the machine as the doors opened on the future Vlad looked down and
registered surprise. The little girl was dressed in lingerie! A smile broke
across his face.
ÒYou would!Ó Esmelda sniffed. She stepped out of his machine.
ÒYouÕre beautiful!Ó Vlad said to Jan.
ÒThanks,Ó she smiled. Carrying the bloody knife, she went with the
three into the street. There was no exact way to direct the machineÕs
landing, and this time it had landed right in the road. Esmelda started
when she realized where they were, but the only automobile moving was a
black cab, about twenty feet away. The three of them darted to the side of
the street.
ÒYou should have set the coordinates for the desert,Ó Vlad said to
his wife. The cab slowed. It stopped. She glared at him.
ÒI didnÕt set the coordinates for anything,Ó she said. ÒYou pressed
the button.Ó
ÒOh, yeah,Ó he said. He looked around. Jan looked too. Two and three
story buildings lined the street. They had an air of disuse about them, as
if, once built, nobody had ever done much to maintain them. ÒWeÕre lucky
we didnÕt land on the fucking east coast,Ó Vlad said. ÒI guess the wraiths
set the coordinates for us.Ó
ÒNext time have them land us in our tower,Ó Esmelda suggested.
ÒItÕs not that accurate,Ó Vlad replied.
ÒFuck it. IÕm sick of the past,Ó Esmelda said. Then she felt the heat
and said, ÒWhy is it so hot?Ó Vlad looked around as they headed down the
sidewalk along a row of shops. It was a covered sidewalk, posts driven
into the cement every ten feet or so to support an overhanging roof. First
the roof was made of wooden planks and then it gave way to a canvas
awning.
ÒShit. Yeah. It is hot,Ó Vlad said. He tugged at his black dress
jacket. A moment later he loosened the string bow tie that was snug
about his neck.
ÒWhy is it so hot?Ó Jan asked. Vlad looked down at her, at her
budding breasts sticking out through her costume of vampire fabric. He
smiled.
ÒDunno,Ó he said. ÒWe may have to go skinny dipping.Ó
ÒI could use a swim,Ó Jan said happily. Esmelda frowned at her
husband but said nothing. A tower loomed in the distance. Jan noticed it
and said,
         ÒWhatÕs that?Ó
ÒItÕs where we live,Ó Vlad said.
ÒWhere we rule from,Ó Esmelda added. Jan, who had learned a little
bit about them both by now, from the wraith-vampires and her boyfriend,
asked,
ÒSo you really are the Queen?Ó For the first time Esmelda showed
affection toward the girl, albeit not of a variety that one might find
comforting in a dark street. But Jan was not troubled by the feeble glow
from the street lights in darkness city, or even by the fanged smile
Esmelda showed her now. For she was as dead as her companions.
ÒYes, my dear,Ó Esmelda smiled. She stopped walking and said, ÒI am
the Queen of Darkness City. This is my realm.Ó She waved her hand
expansively. ÒWith the death of my sister on the east coast I would say
the entire continent is mine now.Ó Jan, who must have still had some
tenderness deep in her undead heart, said,
ÒYour sister is dead?Ó Esmelda laughed.
ÒYes my dear,Ó Esmelda said. Her fangs gleamed. ÒI had nothing to
do with it, but she was human, and so I cannot mourn her loss. She had a
chance to be one with Vlad and I, and chose mortality instead.Ó Her eyes
flashed. ÒLet her enjoy it,Ó she snapped. And then she laughed, loud and
long, so that by the time she ceased people had begun appearing in the
street again.
ÒThere they are. Our beloved citizens,Ó Vlad said.
ÒI had a sister once,Ó Jan said, but nobody heard her. For the
citizens of Darkness City were rushing towards Esmelda and Vlad now, all
of them shouting one word, over and over.
         ÒTime!Ó
EsmeldaÕs eyes glowed. The onrushing crowd slowed. VladÕs head
jerked to the left and he saw part of the crowd head for his machine.
There were already several figures around it, he saw, and he swore.
ÒTheyÕll tear it to bits!Ó he said.
ÒCitizens!Ó Esmelda called out. She lifted a hand. Her eyes turned
redder and she snarled. The crowd stopped running. Ghouls and vampires
alike stood unsteadily in the street. ÒI have returned,Ó Esmelda said. ÒI
am aware of your problems,Ó she said, though she was only now beginning
to apprehend them. ÒI will attend to them.Ó
ÒThe sun is going to blow up!Ó someone shouted.
ÒSilence!Ó Esmelda screamed. The hate was palpable in her voice.
She did not like being troubled by the citizens of Darkness City. They
were here to serve her, not the other way around, at least in her opinion.
They sensed the hate in her voice now and respected it; it was the sign of
a great and powerful vampire. ÒOne of my sisterÕs spells has gone awry,Ó
Esmelda told the crowd. ÒI am working on the problem. It will be resolved
in a few days.Ó She looked down the street, at the hunk of metal sitting in
the street, her husband. ÒAs for my husbandÕs machine,Ó she said. ÒWe
were testing it, and it is almost ready to serve you.Ó The crowd rustled.
ÒYes! The rumors are not true,Ó she said. ÒI am here, in the flesh. I have
not left you to any uncertain fate. Return to your business,Ó she told the
crowd. ÒYou will all ride in my husbandÕs machine presently.Ó
An old vampire came forward. He shuffled, holding a cane, but
Esmelda stiffened, as if being approached by a predator. There was a
wizardÕs pointed cap upon his head.
ÒMadam,Ó the old vampire said, his voice creaking like a door left
open in the wind. He clutched his hands together and gave a gentle bow.
ÒQueen Tristen,Ó he said.
ÒI know my name,Ó Esmelda snapped.
ÒIt is said that the thing from which we hide, the sun, is about to
consume us.Ó
ÒIt is not!Ó Esmelda said. She glanced up at the sky. She did not look
at the stars, though their display was gorgeous. Rather, she looked at the
darkness between them. It was still inky black. Dawn was not yet coming.
ÒWhat do you want?Ó she asked the old vampire. She wished she could
dismiss him, but she couldnÕt. He was the head of the Darkness City
council and a force to be reckoned with.
ÒI want to ensure that there is enough of your husbandÕs medicine
distributed to all the citizens to ensure they can survive the sun,Ó he said.
His eyes stared at Esmelda.
ÒAh, yes. That,Ó Esmelda said. The red was gone from her eyes now.
The crowd was stilled. The old vampire before her was highly resistant to
mesmerism. ÒMy husband does have such a medicine,Ó Esmelda said. She
waved her hand toward his time machine down the street. ÒLike the
machine, it must be tested.Ó A brightness showed in her eyes, not red, but
glaring all the same. ÒYou would not want me to harm our good citizens by
giving them an untested drug, would you?Ó she asked. The old one saw
that he was beaten.
ÒNo, no, madam,Ó he said. Esmelda let a tinge of red return to her
eyes.
         ÒAny further questions?Ó she snapped.
ÒNo, madam. Not at this time,Ó he said. Esmelda strode forward,
little Jan hurrying forward with her. If the crowd noticed her costume,
there were only murmurs of surprise. The old vampire might have seen it
but he kept his eyes on Esmelda. Vampires were known to pull tricks,
especially when wishing to use mesmerism, to throw their victims off
guard. As Esmelda passed him she whispered,
ÒPity a vampire got you before death did.Ó
ÒYes, madam,Ó the old vampire smiled. ÒIt allowed me to serve you.Ó
