                                        Andrew Roller Presents

                                                GIRL PATROL

                                             Chapter Twenty

We scooped the manna off the ground. We stuffed it into our mouths.
We were getting sick of it, but we were damn hungry after freezing and
burning all night. Then we slept awhile, the sun growing hot on our backs
as it rose in the sky. The field was burnt. We were in the middle of
nowhere, and everything around us was black, except the river and the sky.
It was like being in the midst of a barbecue grill, lying on warm ground
where flames had roared only hours before. The party was over, and
somehow these three hotdogs, at least, had been saved for another day.
Yes, Becky and Kim had survived, thank God. But I had no idea where
Jan was. Becky and Kim got up after awhile and went down to the river. I
lay on my back, feeling the sun on my face, and pondered all that had
happened. As I lay there I watched the manna slowly vaporize. Soon it
was gone, vanished in the strong light of day, but it would be back
tomorrow. At least, I hoped it would be. How fortunate we were that
somebody had invented this stuff, somewhere in earthÕs past! The people
in India must have been delighted when it happened. Except I had an eerie
feeling it was never supposed to happen, humans didnÕt strike me as being
that generous. It was probably some bio experiment that got out of
control. Benignly, as it turned out, unless you were a farmer.
The time passed and the girls played in the river. I dozed some
more, and when I woke up again the girls were just coming out of the
river. I saw the smiles on their faces and, lying dirty and unwashed on the
hard ground, it struck me, suddenly, like light finally dawning after many
hours of night, that the river was no longer cold. In fact, it looked cool
and refreshing. The air was hot, though. I wiped my brow. The girls
looked lovely in their FrederickÕs of Hollywood costumes. The soot from
the flames had washed off the fabric and off their bodies. They looked
lovely in the red sunshine, their white limbs glowing, their bodies the
picture of health despite our terrible night. Becky leapt up into the air.
Delightedly she swam about and then she did a little swoop.
ÒWheee!Ó Becky cried. Kim leapt up and tried it to. They looked like
baby birds learning to fly.
ÒDamn. I wish IÕd made a negligee for myself,Ó I told the girls. ÒI
practically froze my balls off in that river.Ó
ÒItÕs nice now,Ó Becky told me. ÒGo in and swim.Ó Grudgingly I
groaned and got up. I was enjoying lying in the sun, warming my body by
it, although now it was becoming somewhat annoying.
ÒWhereÕd all the heat come from?Ó I asked. Then I coughed. I had a
slight cold from being in the river all night. There would be no playing
around with my little girls today. I didnÕt want to pass anything to them.
         ÒI dunno,Ó Kim said.
ÒIt is kinda hot,Ó Becky said, and swooped again.
ÒKinda?Ó Kim asked. ÒItÕs getting damn hot.Ó
ÒYou shouldnÕt swear,Ó Becky told her friend. Then she dropped down
to earth and said to Kim, who was still dog paddling above the burnt field,
ÒWhere do you think Jan is?Ó
ÒI dunno,Ó Kim answered. She wiped back a sudden tear and dropped
down to earth beside Becky.
ÒSheÕs a vampire,Ó Becky said, her eyes suddenly wide.
ÒYou donÕt know that!Ó Kim insisted.
ÒShe bit Brian,Ó Becky said. I felt my neck, walking down toward the
river to wash. I felt two scabs, oddly shaped. The blood from my neck
wounds had trickled down the side of my neck and dried there. I tried
picking at the scabs but then decided to wait until I was in the river. I
sloshed into the water. It was cooler than the air around me; thank God. I
sank down into its cool blue depths, amazed that something that had
nearly frozen me the night before, and had even given me a cold, was now
so delicious to feel all around me. I dunked my head under and then rose up
and breached the surface. I let out a whoop.
ÒFun, huh?Ó Becky asked me, as I splashed the water with my hands.
         ÒYes!Ó I said.
ÒItÕs too bad itÕs so hot, or it would be a nice day,Ó Kim said.
ÒEspecially if Jan werenÕt missing.Ó
ÒMaybe sheÕll come back,Ó Becky said.
         ÒYes,Ó I agreed.
ÒYou want to get your neck bitten again?Ó Kim asked me, half
jestingly, but sad too. Jan was her sister, after all.
ÒI want to know sheÕs okay,Ó I said. ÒEven if she did bite me. And-
and we canÕt go home without your sister,Ó I added, broaching what was
now a little-mentioned subject.
ÒDo you think we ever will go home?Ó Becky asked. ÒI miss my
mom.Ó
ÒI miss my parents too,Ó Kim said.
ÒMy parents are dead,Ó I said.
ÒWell, youÕre bigger Ôn us, so of course your parents are dead,Ó Becky
said.
ÒNot everyone whoÕs 35, uh, 30, has dead parents,Ó I told Becky. I
splashed the water again and then said, ÒI suppose I should get back to
take care of their house, if nothing else. Although I donÕt really like that
house. I was pretty lonely until you guys showed up.Ó
ÒWeÕre girls, not guys,Ó Becky said. Kim agreed with this, but my
mind wasnÕt on the correction. Instead I was struck by the fact that I had
very little to go back to. My life was these girls. I would lose them if I
went back, wouldnÕt I? I mean, could a 30-year-old hang around with
three little elementary school girls every day of his life, without getting
in trouble? The girls realized I had suddenly become despondent and Kim
asked,
         ÒWhatÕs wrong?Ó
ÒNothing,Ó I lied. Kim jumped in the air and came dog paddling
toward me. Becky followed, and soon they were both hovering over me, as
easily as if theyÕd been born sparrows or hummingbirds.
ÒI just miss you guys, thatÕs all, and Jan too,Ó I said.
ÒWe all miss Jan,Ó Kim agreed.
         ÒYes,Ó Becky said.
