Long, slow waves came rolling in from the horizon to crash against obstinate black rocks. Cumulous clouds floated placidly overhead. But I could see the anvil of a thundercloud in the distance, out where the sea touched the sky. ÒLook! A black sand beach!Ó I said to Katie. ÒLetÕs go swimming. My feet hurt from walking,Ó Katie said. ÒOkay,Ó I agreed. ÒGood thing we brought our bikinis.Ó ÒYes. I think of everything,Ó Katie told me. ÒWant some of my Doritos?Ó ÒNo,Ó I said. IÕd eaten mine earlier, when weÕd stopped to pick berries, on the edge of the forest. WeÕd had a picnic. WeÕd drunk some of our sodas, and pissed out lemon-smelling pee in the bushes. We started down a trail leading from the forest to the beach below. When we finally arrived at the bottom, the cliffs of the shore rising above us, we found a great surprise. ÒThis isnÕt black sand,Ó Katie said, bending down. ÒItÕs black licorice sand!Ó ÒWow,Ó I said. ÒBest tasting sand IÕve ever tasted!Ó Katie informed me, putting a handful of it in her mouth. ÒYeah, it is good,Ó I said. I picked up some and put it in my mouth and chewed it. ÒBlack licorice,Ó I said. I stopped chewing. ÒKatie!Ó I warned. ÒRemember what Boswell said. We should beware of licorice. Especially if itÕs black. Remember Licorice Lad?Ó ÒOh, yeah,Ó Katie admitted. She dropped the rest of her handful. ÒToo bad. At least we can go swimming, though. Huh?Ó ÒOkay,Ó I said, dropping my grocery sack full of Lunchables and sodas and fruit juice, and all the other things weÕd managed to bring, from Bicycle playing cards to the Virginia Slims cigarette Katie had stolen from her mom. ÒPut your things here, next to mine,Ó I told Katie. ÒWe can watch our stuff from the water.Ó ÒI donÕt think anyoneÕs around to steal it,Ó Katie said, scanning the cliffs above. ÒI know,Ó I said. ÒWe havenÕt met anyone, except that friendly bear. I suppose we can just go ahead and change, huh?Ó ÒI guess so,Ó Katie said. She unzipped her jeans. ÒOr we could swim nude.Ó ÒNo,Ó I said. ÒLetÕs not. We should at least wear our bikinis. You never know. Somebody could come by.Ó ÒOkay,Ó Katie said. She stripped out of her t-shirt and pants. I did likewise. We tied each other into our bikinis. Her into her new pink bikini, me into the red one sheÕd loaned me. ÒSee? It fits you,Ó Katie said. ÒYeah,Ó I said. I tugged the rear of my red panties out of my ass. It fit me, more or less. If I didnÕt mind having my ass cheeks hanging out. And if I didnÕt mind a bra that let the undersides of my tits hang free. But I didnÕt want to offend Katie, by suggesting I had bigger boobs than she did. So I said nothing, simply pulling on the parts of the swimsuit, hoping it didnÕt get wedged too far up in my ass or let my tits bounce out. ÒLetÕs go!Ó Katie said. She grabbed my hand. ÒAlright. IÕll race you!Ó I said. ÒNo. LetÕs go into the water together,Ó Katie said. ÒIÕm a little scared of it. WeÕve never swam here before.Ó ÒOh, alright,Ó I said. ÒCome on, it looks fresh and cool.Ó We skipped down the beach. I felt happy. We touched our toes to the water and found it as inviting as weÕd hoped. We waded in to our knees. Then we went deeper still, up to my hips, and KatieÕs navel. ÒLetÕs dive into the next wave,Ó I told Katie. ÒOkay,Ó she said, a little lacking in self-confidence. ÒCome on, thereÕs nothing to be afraid of. The waterÕs cool, and that storm on the horizon is still far away.Ó ÒI hope it doesnÕt rain. I donÕt want to get my hair wet,Ó Katie said. ÒCome on!Ó I said. I splashed her. She shrieked. When the next wave came, I dove into it. We played in the water. I practised diving like a dolphin, into each wave as it came along. Katie went wading, and collected a handful of shells among licorice rocks along the shore. She brought me the shells and showed me her favorite ones, holding them high so the waves wouldnÕt catch them. ÒKatie,Ó I said, looking up in the sky, to check where the storm was, that lay gathering out on the horizon. ÒKatie, whatÕs that black cloud, hovering in over the cliffs?Ó Katie looked up. ÒI dunno,Ó she said. The cloud grew larger and seemed to descend. ÒDuck down in the water,Ó I said to her. ÒWhy?Ó Katie asked. ÒIÕm not sure. Just duck down,Ó I said. ÒWhat about my sea shells?Ó Katie asked. ÒHold on to them tight, and duck,Ó I said. I pushed on her shoulder. Hard. I clapped my hand over her mouth so she couldnÕt scream as I pushed her down. I felt her shells escape from her fingers as I plunged her down in the sea. The cloud dropped fast. It glinted gold in the setting sun. ÒWhy did you?Ó Katie, whose mouth was under the waterÕs surface, and mostly covered by my hand, asked. ÒBats!Ó I said to her. She gazed upward. Her eyes followed mine. ÒYeeeck!Ó Katie screamed, but it ended in a blubber, fortunately, thanks to my hand and the water. The bats came swirling and fluttering down to the beach. They landed amidst our gear. They seemed to fight over it. And then, one by one, they began to rise. ÒOur stuff!Ó I gasped. ÒMy toys!Ó Katie managed to say, her mouth underwater. We watched in horror as the golden, butterscotch bats flew high, gripping our things in their claws. They flew higher and higher, until they disappered into the clouds. Slowly I rose from the water. ÒKatie, weÕve got to get out of here,Ó I whispered. ÒWe could be in Licorice Loch.Ó ÒYeah,Ó Katie said. She nearly jumped in my arms. ÒIÕm scaired!Ó she cried. ÒHurry. LetÕs head for the beach,Ó I told her. We made it safely out of the water. ÒWhat will we do? All our Lunchables and everything is gone!Ó Katie said. We gazed at the spot where our things had been. ÒWell, I hope you like eating candy,Ó I told her. ÒNot as much as I used to,Ó Katie said. ÒItÕs still warm,Ó I told her. I gazed at the horizon. ÒBut the sun is setting. Remember what the bear said. The bats come out at night. LetÕs run back up the path to the top of the cliff. We can hide in the forest until morning. We can eat berries from the bushes if we get hungry. Come on!Ó I told her. I grabbed KatieÕs hand. Together we ran as fast as we could back up the path weÕd followed to the beach. I felt miserable. Our swim had cost us our clothes. We had nothing left but our bikinis, now. ÒItÕs a good thing we didnÕt go skinny dipping!Ó Katie puffed, running beside me. ÒI know! Licorice Lad would really want to get his hands on us then!Ó I said. 30 ----------------------- Dreamgirls! ----------------------- -Back issues (and stories): type http://www.dejanews.com/ into your browserÕs ÒLocationÓ window.
