                                     Chapter Nineteen

We had managed to sneak inside the Citadel. We were in the throne
room, near the throne, but it sat empty. No one was in the room. Pauline
and I stood along one of the side walls. We were standing in front of a
hole in the wall. It was shaped like a portal. It was made of red and
white-striped peppermint.
ÒItÕs the Peppermint Portal,Ó Pauline whispered to me. I took her
hand. Together, both of curious, we stepped into it. I felt like I was
stepping into an elevator for, within, it was cubicle shaped, with a panel
on the wall where it curved round to meet the arched doorway.
On the panel there was a picture of a hand. I placed my own hand
within it.
ÒNothing,Ó I said, hoping perhaps to feel some sense of being able to
control the device.
ÒIt wonÕt transport me,Ó Pauline said. ÒIÕm a candy-based lifeform.
But you itÕll transport, since youÕre human.Ó
ÒBut,Ó I said. I put my hand into the picture of the hand on the panel
again. ÒIt doesnÕt,Ó I said.
ÒYes,Ó Pauline said. ÒOnly my Daddie knows how to work it.Ó
I let go of her hand. I stepped out of the Peppermint Portal. I gazed
around me and wondered where Licorice Lad was. I looked across the room
and saw a stairway. It went down, and looked dark, as if it led down to
rooms underground. I heard a tromping sound. I froze.
ÒOne... two... three... four... five. Five! It has five fingers!Ó I heard
Pauline say. I guessed she was counting the fingers on the image of the
hand, inside the portal. Silly girl. But thatÕs what you do, when youÕre six.
Counting is fun then.
I heard a throbbing sound. I glanced in the direction of the portal. It
was glowing now, with a pulsating red and white light. Pauline stuck her
head out.
ÒBambi! Come quick! IÕve gotten it to woik!Ó Pauline cried happily. I
darted toward the arched opening. Then I stopped, just short of the
doorway.
ÒNo...Ó I said. ÒI canÕt leave without Katie.Ó
ÒCome quick! It wonÕt work for long!Ó Pauline said. I felt a dire need
to run into it, but steeled myself, and decided not to.
ÒNo,Ó I said again. ÒI must find my friend first. I canÕt leave her!Ó
The throbbing subsided. It died. Little Pauline stepped out of the
portal.
ÒWe must find my Daddie too,Ó Pauline said, gazing up at me.
ÒDo you know where the dungeon is?Ó I asked her.
ÒNo... my Daddie never showed me that,Ó Pauline said.
The tromping sound seemed to be approaching us. I looked around
quickly.
ÒHow about over there? Did you ever go down those stairs?Ó I asked
Pauline. I pointed across the room.
ÒNo. I donÕt remember ever going down there,Ó Pauline said. There
was a curtain, pulled back, and I wondered if it had been drawn shut
across the stairs on her last visit. Now it was thrown open, as if there
was so much coming and going on those stairs that there was no need to
keep it closed anymore.
ÒIÕll bet you those stairs lead down to the dungeon,Ó I said.
ÒThey look dark, and scary,Ó Pauline said. She took my hand.
ÒQuick! SomeoneÕs coming up them!Ó I said to her. ÒWeÕll have to
hide in the portal. But donÕt play with the panel. DonÕt count the fingers
on the hand again. I canÕt leave until I find Katie. And your Daddie,Ó I told
her.
ÒOkay,Ó Pauline said. Together we darted into the peppermint
colored hole in the wall. Just in time, for a gingerman emerged from the
dungeon. He was followed by another. Together they surveyed the throne
room.
ÒMaster wishes for all the walls to be painted black,Ó one gingerman
said to the other. Pauline, holding my hand, gripped it tight with surprise,
like a child finding a stranger in her bedroom.
ÒYes. I shall fetch peanuts and command them to begin painting at
once,Ó the other gingerman nodded.
ÒBlack... like black licorice,Ó the first gingerman said. The second
one nodded.
ÒYes. It will complement him, painted black in honor of his name and
his candy,Ó the second gingerman said.
ÒLook. ThereÕs three of them now, passing along the great hall.
Peanuts! Peanuts!Ó the first gingerman called out.
ÒYes, masters?Ó the three peanuts asked. They poked their small
heads into the throne room and gazed at the gingermen.
ÒCease whatever chores you are doing and get some black licorice
paint. The Sultan requires this room be painted black, like licorice,Ó the
first gingerman said.
ÒMake haste, peanuts!Ó the second gingerman said. ÒLicorice Lad is
not forgiving of tardiness. We almost lost our heads, due to our tardiness
in executing his prisoners!Ó I felt Pauline squeeze my hand very hard and
draw in her breath. I heard my own breath; a sharp, indrawn gasp.
         ÒDid they--?Ó Pauline whimpered.
ÒNo!Ó I said. ÒSurely they have not.Ó But I had no idea, now, if her
father was still alive, after hearing the gingermen. Perhaps he was dead,
and she and I were the last hope for Candyland.
