But Brad was not budging. Brad knew his mum. He knew she would flip but he also knew that she would give in. The question was for how long. After realising that Brad was serious Lucy decided to get it over and done with. On Friday after school Leanne was in the kitchen making dinner. She was in a good mood as she had finished her four day shift and was enjoying her first day off. Her mood was about to change. Lucy: Hi mum Leanne: Hi Lucy (pleased her daughter was being nice) Lucy: you on the wine already Leanne: it's been a long week Lucy: yeh, you work too hard Leanne: bills to pay sweetheart Lucy: you going out Leanne: yeh, Derek and I are seeing some friends for a drink later. What about you Lucy: nothing planned Leanne: no date set up Lucy: well I am seeing this boy, we're going steady Leanne: who's this then Lucy: his name's Tom Leanne: cute? Lucy: you bet, he's gorgeous. Leanne: how many boyfriends is that then Lucy: mum (chiding tone) Leanne: sorry Lucy: he's definitely the one. I think I love him Leanne: your too young to be in love dear Lucy: am not Leanne: so when do I get to meet this Tom Lucy: dunno, whenever Leanne: I'd like to meet the love of my daughter's life Lucy: mum (apprehensive) Leanne: yes (still doing the cooking) Lucy: can I talk to you Leanne: sure honey (not really listening) Lucy: I need to tell you something Leanne: what (stopping what she was doing and beginning to feel nervous) Lucy: promise you won't get mad Leanne: what have you done (serious tone) Lucy: promise Leanne: can't promise if I don't know what it is Lucy: well........it's like this..............I'm no longer a virgin (waiting for the verbal blast) Leanne remained silent. She put both hands on the edge of the kitchen worktop, arms straight and looked down at the floor. Her eyes were shut. She was controlling her anger and other emotions and Lucy knew it. Leanne: Your only 13 Lucy: I know mum but I'm ready Leanne: you've hardly started puberty Lucy: that was ages ago Leanne: who was it with, was it with this Tom Lucy: yeah Leanne: when Lucy: just this week Leanne: did you take precautions Lucy: yes mum. I'm on the pill as well Leanne: what (gobsmacked) since when Lucy: last week Leanne: you went to the doctor yourself Lucy: with Alyssa Leanne: is she on the pill as well Lucy: yeah Leanne: can girls your age not wait a few years until your old enough Lucy: we are old enough mum Leanne: you are not (sternly). Did this Tom force you. Lucy: sorry mum but I was totally ready. It wasn't a spur of the moment thing. I wanted to. Leanne: now you will get a reputation Lucy: it's normal for boyfriends and girlfriends to do stuff mum. You only get a bad rep if you sleep around Leanne: but your only 13 Lucy: mum I'm sorry you don't want me to have sex, but I wanted to and I'm ready Leanne: does Brad know Lucy: yes Leanne: he's no better. He's been a bad influence, bring all these girls home. Lucy: your no angel (immediately regretting saying it) Leanne: less of your cheek Lucy: sorry Leanne: well I don't want him anywhere near this house Lucy: mum that's not fair Leanne: finished. Your not to see him again Lucy: mum you can't make me do that (getting angry) Leanne: can to. You don't see him again Lucy: You can't make me And with that Lucy stormed off to her bedroom in the huff. Leanne finished making the tea and was a lot worse mood than before. 15 minutes later Brad walked in after football practice. Leanne: I want a word with you Brad: ok (knowing what this was all about) Leanne: You knew Lucy was having sex and didn't tell me Brad: I wanted her to tell you Leanne: Well she just did. She's only thirteen for crying out loud Brad: I know, I went mad as well, but a lot of girls have sex at that age now Leanne: it's too young Brad: maybe Leanne: You've been a bad influence on her Brad: how, that's not fair Leanne: All those girls you bring back, how old are some of them, probably not much older than Lucy Brad: She would have done it anyway mum, you know Luce, headstrong, always thinks she knows best Leanne: yeah, but you haven't helped. Now she'll get a reputation Brad: I've had a word with her boyfriend Leanne: Hope you kicked his butt Brad: was tempted but I calmed down Leanne: so what do you say to this little cassanova Brad: that he better treat Lucy right. Not cheat on her and not blab to all his mates. Or I'll kick his head in Leanne: good Brad: sorry mum, it's just the way it is these days Leanne: can you all not keep your clothes on until your older Brad: why should you get all the fun Leanne: I'm not laughing Brad: sorry Leanne: I've told her that she had to finish with him Brad: that ain't gonna happen and you know it Leanne: suppose your right Brad: she'll fight you all the way Leanne: I know Brad: plus you gave me some leeway when I was that age Leanne: that was a mistake Brad: come on mum, you've said that was the day I grew up. Maybe it will be the same for Lucy Leanne: I doubt it Brad: Why don't you meet him Leanne: Don't think I want to Brad: He's all right. Bit of a poser. Leanne: Like you you mean Brad: ha, maybe Leanne: I'll think about it Brad: fair enough Leanne: tea's ready Leanne shouted to Lucy that tea was ready and she shouted back she did not want any. Leanne left hers in the oven and Brad and his mum had tea together. They avoided the current topic of conversation.
