The Villa Aphrodite was as beautiful as its name, situated in a
grove of cypress and cedar trees overlooking a shimmering silver
sea. It sat in a natural amphitheatre above a bay enclosed by the
horns of the hills that stood behind it, fragrant with thyme and
juniper and resinous mediteranean pines. Inside the villa was all
polished limestone or terrazzo floors high ceilings and tall
windows with the main teaching rooms, the kitchens and dining
area and the staff and students lounges on the ground floor and
students dormitories and some staff rooms on the second floor
with the rest of the staff in the attics, which were not as
claustrophobic as Marcus, whose room was there, had feared. To
the rear of the villa was the communal outdoor social and dining
area under a pergola of vines; several outdoor classrooms on
marble terraces shaded by interestingly parabolic awnings; tennis
courts; a swimming pool; a gymnasium and a trim trail.

All of this Marcus took in in a near trance-like state partly
because he could hardly believe he was actually there and partly
because his guide was Sonia, a beautiful Ukrainian girl whose
lithe figure seemed to be subliminally suggested by the way her
peplos with its black and white Greek key border hinted at a
nipple or a hip. Marcus, who was naked, could not conceal his

interested?" Marcus asked, his natural scepticism overcoming the
wave of hopefulness.

"Weren't you interested when you were nine, ten or a teen?"
Michael asked rhetorically. "All our students have experienced a
generally permissive and open style of parenting and it is our
responsibility to provide them with a supportive and caring
environment that develops all their faculties and instincts to
the highest degree possible. It is quite a responsibility
Marcus!"

'Indeed!' Thought Marcus as he went to the main staff briefing
where he was allocated what they called the 'Junior Class' of
eight to ten year olds comprising six girls and one boy of a mix
of nationalities and would be their 'group leader' for pastoral
purposes while also teaching his subjects across the whole school
in a packed and detailed timetable that seemed to leave little
time for idleness. He took the great sheaf of papers and
instructions and student biographies to his room. The students
would arrive in three days, so he was going to be very busy!

Quite suddenly what had seemed like a totally mad hallucination
had become reality. In barely three days he would be teaching! He
had lessons to plan, students biographies to read, to say nothing
of his apprehension that he would be naked all the time. And yet,
the prospect excited him because it challenged him to overcome
what Derek had said was his own inability to actualise his
dreams. So, in a few days he would be teaching science in a most
unorthodox school where it would be his duty to actualise the
dreams of others: could he do that for others when he had found
it so difficult for himself?

During the first staff session he had been asked to explain to
the others why he had chosen to teach at the Villa Aphrodite. He
had known that this was a requirement and had quite some time
reflecting and writing out his thoughts such that they formed the
script for what he said in that session.

"I was three months into a PhD on the biochemistry of a snake
venom," he began nervously. "Research was not exciting me as I
had thought it would and one day, on a whim, I went to the local
art school and asked if they needed a life model. As it happened
they did and so, when I should have been in the library reading
up on my research I was naked on a podium surrounded by twenty or
so assorted art students. I enjoyed the anonymity of being the
object at the focus of their attention. In fact it was quite a
revelation that nudity could be so mundane."

To Marcus' surprise his audience had not gone to sleep or started

felt his spirits lift a little and continued. "Two or three times
a week I'd go swimming at the local pool, more to ogle the girls
than for the exercise, but discovered that on some Saturdays
there was a closed session for a nudist swim.  I rang the number
and went along to the next session. Just as with the life classes
I discovered that being naked was mundane though the fact that
there were other naked people made it more sociable. Most of the
people there were middle-aged or older, mostly men, but there was
one younger couple with two daughters."

"During the second session Brian, the husband, got talking to me
in the pool. I was so grateful for this simple social gambit that

Quite spontaneously the others gave him an appreciative round of
applause but it was Helen who said "welcome to our family Marcus,
I think you will be very happy here."

Marcus was not feeling at all ready when the students arrived on
a coach that had brought them overnight and overland and by ferry
to the island. He was feeling doubly unready when the coach
disgorged its load of tired, cramped and grumpy children. This
was one of the few occasions when the male staff also wore the
male equivalent of the peplos - also white but just knee length,
clasped on the opposite shoulder to the females and belted with a
dark blue sash: he was relieved as meeting grumpy students in the

Immediately on arrival the students were led into the large
lecture room with the three tall windows that were open to the
sea and seated by tutor group

Most of the students were returners, so knew the routine, but
Marcus, who was tutor to the junior class, had five new students
out of his tutor group of seven but even they seemed less nervous
than he felt. The formal introductory session was led by Helen
and Michael and involved all the usual staff introductions,
outline of the academic calendar, mentions of sporting events and
cultural trips and ended with Helen's address.

"Welcome to Villa Aphrodite," she said spreading her arms
inclusively, "and welcome especially to our twelve newest
students. Cleo, Sonya, Leonie, Maria and Gaston will be in
Marcus' tutor group. Since Marcus is also new I am looking to
you, Amelie and Nora especially, to help everyone settle in.
Welcome also to Philip and Andy who are in Leo's tutor group;
Freddy and Katarina in Chriistina's group; Zebe and Elena in
Maria's group and Annetta in Lydia's. The rest of you, I hope,
are looking forward to another exciting and challenging year. We
are a very special school and you are all very special children.
It is our aim to help you develop to your fullest potential not
only intellectually but also physically and emotionally. Now!
Enough talk! It is time for you to go off in your tutor groups
and get settled in."

Marcus' group shared a dormitory at the back of the villa that
looked out over the swimming pool towards the encircling pine
clad hills. He led his seven charges and allowed them to choose
their beds. Inevitable there were arguments that Marcus had to
resolve, usually by the simple expedient of tossing a coin and
once by rock-paper-scissors. When he returned to alert them to
supper time he found the six little girls clustered around
Gaston.

"What are you doing?" he asked in his best tutor's voice.

"Come and see!" giggled Sonya, "Gaston has a huge penis."

Gaston was standing at the end of his bed bright scarlet and very
close to tears as the girls all marvelled at the penis they had

Marcus to read them their bed-time story. Cleo wanted to park
herself in Marcus' lap but Amelie very gently dissuaded her by
saying that perhaps in future they would draw lots for that
privilege, but for that night all would stay firmly in their own
beds, duvets up to the chin while Marcus read them the first
chapter of the Little Mermaid.

By the time he finished the chapter and turned out the light all
his charges were quietly asleep. Unable to face his colleagues he
went to his room, made sure all his notes and materials for the
morrow were put ready, took a quick shower and slipped into bed.
As he drifted off to sleep his memory relived the experience of
