Chloe is 13, 5 feet tall with long blonde hair and big blue eyes. She is wearing dirty blue jeans and top. Dirty tennis shoes cover her feet and an old backpack is slung over her shoulder. Chloe is tired, hungry. She has been hitchhiking for four days now to get away from home. Chloe watches the man, hoping he might have some spare change. She is afraid to say anything. She has run into to many weirdoes already in those four days. The man opens his car door and slowly walks up to the young girl. She clutches her backpack to her tightly. "Any spare change mister," she asks. "Are you okay?" He asks. "Yeah fine just need some change is all," trying to act tough. "You're drenched and you look hungry." "Well, I'm ok I guess," trembling slightly from the cold rain. "What's your name?" "Why do u need to know?" still trying to act all tough. "I care about you that's all." "You a cop or something? Nobody cares about me mister." "I do. Now come on tell me your name." She hesitates, looking the man over. Then she whispers Chloe, deciding he might be okay after all. "Well Chloe you look like you could use some food and new clothes," he says to her. "What's it gonging to cost me?" She asks sarcastically, clutching her backpack even tighter. "Look mister all I need is some spare change." "It's free...I just want to help. The only thing it will cost you is time." "Are u for real? It won't cost me nothing?" "Nope, just spend some time with me." "Well I guess I could for a little while. A little time wont' hurt nothing." "Come on." He motions to the car. Chloe hesitates, still unsure, watching him walk to the car. "Well, are you coming or what?" She finally slings her backpack up on her shoulder and starts towards his car, hunger winning out over stubbornness. He opens the passenger door for her. "Thanks," Chloe says as she throws her backpack into the back seat and climbs in. He closes the door and moves around to the driver's side. He opens His door and gets in closing it behind him. He starts up the car. "Hey mister you have a soda or anything?" "No, sorry, not in the car. Well should we get you clothes or food first?" "Oh, okay, well how bout something to eat first then?" still not having dropped the tough act. "Okay, where to my lady?" "I don't know. Where's a good place for food?" "Well the only places open this late are the ones open 24 hours. Know of any you like?" "Well," looking out the window, "I like pancakes." "How about Denny's then?" "Yeah whatever..." she trails off in thought of when her mom made her pancakes before she died. He puts the car in gear and heads to Denny's. He tries to learn her story as they drive. "So what are you doing way out here?" He asks. "Nothing, just walking I guess." "All by yourself, at this hour? What are you like 12?" Chloe is still staring out the side window as he drives "I'm 18." She says, lying as best she can. "I don't think so." "I am 18! Why can't you believe me?" Getting somewhat defensive. "Okay, we'll go with 18 for now. Why so hungry and torn up?" "Like you care. I ran away from home a couple days ago. I got tired of my step dad hitting me." "That's horrible, a pretty girl like you getting hit." "Yeah well if my mom hadn't died," tears welling in her eyes at the thought of her. He reaches over and gently touches Chloe's shoulder. At first she flinches, pulling closer to the door. "Hey, I won't hurt you." "Yeah that's what my step dad used to say too, right before he hit me" tears rolling down Chloe's cheeks. They pull into the parking lot. "Here we are." Chloe wipes her face on her shirtsleeve, looking out the window at the Denny's. He stops and turns off the car. "Let's go." She reaches for her backpack and opens the door. "You can leave that here if you want." She decides against it and clutches it to her. All her possessions in the world are in the backpack. "Or, not." He closes and locks the car doors and starts walking to the front or the restaurant. She walks just a few steps behind him, stomach grumbling, the food smelling wonderful. He opens the door for her. "Ladies first." She looks sideways at him as she passes. "Thanks," she mumbles. He arranges for a booth in the corner. Chloe feels like everyone is looking at her and seeing how dirty and drenched she is, she hurries to the booth sliding across the bench. He sits across from her. "Order anything you want." Chloe picks up a menu. "Can I have pancakes mister?" "Whatever you want," he smiles. When the waitress comes, Chloe orders a big stack of pancakes and juice. "Just coffee for me thanks." "What's your name mister?" Chloe finally asks. "Darren," Chloe smiles a little tiny smile. "Thanks for buying me some food, Darren." "So anything else I should know about you. I'm sorry about your mom." "Thanks," tears welling again. Afraid you will be the one that end's up sending me back to my dad, Chloe tells Darren nothing else about herself. They sit in silence with their drinks waiting for the food. Tired of silence she asks, "So why did you stop?" "I felt sorry for you, such a pretty girl in obvious pain." "Yeah well, I'm old enough to take care of myself. But thanks for stopping anyway." Darren smiles, interrupted by Chloe's pancakes. She is so used to waiting on her dad's word before she can eat she sits and stares, almost drooling the pancakes smell so good. "What r u waiting for?" "I don't get to eat until my step dad says I can," forgetting that he is not here. "You're safe. Eat when ever you want." Chloe lets another smile show, and then digs in hungrily into the big stack of pancakes. Darren sits watching her, secretly eyeing your body, what shows above the table anyway. She eats the entire stack, drinking several glasses of juice. She smiles every now and then when the memories of her mom fixing her stacks of pancakes come flooding back. The bill comes and he pays. "Thanks mister, I uh, mean thanks Darren." "Now, you ready for some clean clothes?" "Yes sir," Chloe says quietly, still not accustomed to being able to do things and eat when she wants "Let's go then," Darren starts for the car. Chloe follows behind him. He unlocks the car. She climbs back in when he opens the door. He then climbs in the other side. He starts up the car and begins to drive. She is sitting more in the seat this time and not so much against the door. "I'm sorry but the only thing open this late is the Super Wal-mart." "Thanks again for the food Darren. That's okay; my dad buys me Salvation Army stuff anyway." "So what type of clothes do you want?" "Just some jeans and a t-shirt's okay, I guess." "If that's what you want?" "That's more than I have a right to ask you for Darren." "I'll buy you what ever you want. A beautiful girl deserves beautiful clothes." Chloe shows another small smile. "I'm not beautiful, but thanks." They pull up to Wal-mart. This time Chloe chooses to leave her backpack. She gets out of Darren's car. He gets out and locks it. "I'll follow you this time. I never was one for picking out clothes." Chloe goes straight for the clothes, picking up jeans and shirts, trying to decide. It is such a treat for her to get to buy new clothes. "So your wife doesn't mind when u pick up girls?" Chloe says trying to make small talk. "I'm not married." "A handsome man like you?" Chloe laughs, finally relaxing just a tiny bit. Darren smiles and looks at her...imagining Chloe in her new clothes. She picks out a plain shirt and a pair of jeans. "Is that all you want?" "Yeah," looking at Darren with big, wide blue eyes. "You don't need anything else, undies perhaps?" "Well, I could use a new pair I guess." "Okay then, go get some." Chloe goes and picks out a pair of panties. "Can I have a new bra too?" "Sure," Darren says half-curious as to what size you wear. Chloe tries to hide how old she really is, picks out one that is a little too big for her, but figures he will not notice. "Is that all?" "Yeah, thanks," clutching the stuff like its gold. "Okay let's go check out." Chloe walks beside Darren to the checkout. He pays the woman as she eyes them strangely. Ashamed of how she looks, Chloe can hangs behind him, eyes down. "Well now, you look tired. If you want you can stay the night at my place." Darren says as they walk out to the car. "Oh I, I, don't want to cause u any trouble Darren." "It's fine. It's kind of lonely by myself anyway." "Can I take a shower?" Chloe asks, not having had one in days. "Of course." "I won't be any trouble, I swear," smiling again. "Okay, hop in." Darren unlocks the car. Chloe gets back in the car, holding her bag of brand new things, like a kid with a new toy. "Wish my dad was like you," Chloe mumbles. Darren begins to drive to his apartment nearby. "This is a nice neighborhood," she comments. They drive into an apartment complex, past a pool and some tennis courts. Her eyes wide as they pass each one, "Wow." They pull up to an apartment at the end of the complex. "Well here we are," Darren says as he shuts off the engine. Chloe grabs her backpack and new stuff and climbs out, in awe of how nice your place is. He walks into the interior hallways to his front door. "Thanks for letting me shower and crash with you Darren. I'll go on my way in the morning." "You can stay as long as you like," Darren says as he opens the door. Inside is a small one-bedroom apartment. A nice kitchen is straight ahead through the living room. On the left is a sofa and a recliner, to the right a full home theater with video games. The hallway on the left has a bedroom on the right and the bathroom on the left. The bedroom has a queen sized waterbed and two dressers one with a TV on top the other with a mirror. Chloe shyly steps inside, amazed at all the cool stuff you have. "Well the showers all yours if you want it. The towels are in that closet," pointing to a linen closet in the hall. "Thanks," Chloe says as she leaves her back pack by the door and takes her new clothes to go shower. She strips her grungy clothes off, turning the water on hot and climbing in the shower. Darren sits on the recliner, thinking of her beautiful body, imagining it naked in the shower. Chloe stays under the water forever, washing, shampooing my long hair. Finally, Darren hears the water shut off. Chloe comes out in jeans and t-shirt to get her brush and stuff from her backpack. "Mmmm, you clean up very nice." "Thanks," Chloe says blushing, her skin glowing and clean and her hair long down my back. "So, are you tired?" "Yeah a little I guess." "Do you want to go to sleep? We can stay up if you want." "Can we stay up for a while?" "Okay, have a seat then." Chloe sits on Darren's big comfy sofa. She looks up at him. "So tell me more about you." "What do you want to know?" Chloe says, feeling a bit more comfortable and relaxed after a shower. "Well first off, your not 18 are you?" "Yeah I am," Chloe says still a bit scared. "Where are you from miss `18 year old?'" "A little town south of here, you probably wouldn't know it." "Oh," They sit in silence for a few minutes. "I feel guilty about lying since you've been so nice, Darren, can I tell u something?" "Of course." Hesitating, "I'm not really 18 Darren." "I guessed that." "Promise you won't send me back to my dad? You got to promise me Darren." "I promise. I said you could stay as long as you want and I meant it." "I, I, I'm 13 Darren," Chloe says, look into his eyes. He smiles. "That's better, the truth." Chloe smiles, having gotten the truth out. The silence continues. "So anything else you've lied about?" "No sir. That's it. I did run away from home about four days ago." "'No sir', I like that, very respectful. Chloe lowers her eyes, tears dropping. "My dad, he, he..." "What's wrong?" Chloe curls into the corner. "He tried to rape me." "Oh my God!" Darren moves to the sofa next to Chloe, "are you alright?" She cowers from his touch. "I hate him," she mumbles, "I hate him." "Its okay, you're safe now." "No, he'll find me. I won't go back, I won't!" Darren gently strokes her hair. "You don't have to, live here with me, I'll protect you." Chloe sobs for several minutes, amazed at Darren's touch, so gentle. "I can't go back Darren." "You don't have to," Darren says as he pulls Chloe to him. She cries against his chest. "Ssshhh." After several minutes, Chloe quiets down. He realizes she has cried herself to sleep against his chest. His hand goes from her head to her back gently caressing her. She whimpers as she sleeps, fitful, having bad dreams of her father. Darren realizes he only has one blanket. He softly moves Chloe off him and stands up. She curls into a ball as she sleeps fitfully, memories of her mother, dreams of the things her father tried to do. He gently picks her up and carries her to the bedroom. She is so tired she does not wake as he picks her up. Darren lays her gently on the soft bed and slips the covers over her. Then he quietly climbs in next to you her and they sleep. Sometime near 2 am, Chloe wakes up screaming, scared. Darren sits up startled, "what, what?" "No daddy, no," Chloe screams, having had the worst dream ever of her father. Darren goes to her, cradling her in his arms. "Its ok sweetie." Chloe is trembling, sweating, disoriented not really remembering where she is. "No daddy, no, no!" "He's not here. Just relax, you were dreaming." Chloe is breathing hard as Darren holds her. "Oh God," Chloe says as her eyes open wide. She looks at him. "Darren, oh God I'm sorry." "Ssshhh, its ok," Darren says as he gently strokes Chloe's hair again. She slowly calms down. He kisses her forehead softly. Her trembling stops and she lies against him. "You ok?" "Yes sir, I'm ok." "Can you go back to sleep?" "I think so. I didn't mean to wake you up too." "It's okay honey." Chloe lies back down, drifting off. She lies next to Darren, her arm around his stomach. She sleeps for hours, no more bad dreams. To be continued... Copyright (C) 2003 Masterforyounggirls
