   Setting: Story takes place principally in British Columbia in Canada. 
There are no roads into this northern wilderness, no Mounties, No nearby
cabins, camps, or people.  No electricity, Gasoline, LP gas, Telephone, or
any other amenities found in the US civilized world.





   Background: Two years ago, I inherited more money than I could ever
spend in many lifetimes.  I banked all but 3 million in an offshore account
that pays very high interest and then invested 2 million in secured
investments through a third party broker who has my power of attorney.  The
terms, though many, include a requirement that a minimum return of 10% per
annum.  Anything over that amount then belongs to the broker as his
commission.  I am a widower with no children, my wife having been killed by
a drunken driver 3 years after we married and was pregnant with our baby at

well.  We took photographs, GPS readings and generally mapped the area by
air.  We also used Google Earth for satellite photos and had a mapping
company draw maps for us as there would lots of work to do before we could
live there.  The land is mostly government land though we were able to buy
10 square miles of prime forestland that also has numerous lakes on it. 
The largest lake is about 2 square miles and is fed by a nice river.  We
contracted a logging company in Canada and had them clear a road through
the timber 15 feet wide from the nearest accessible road that would lead to
civilization.  Several hundred yards down this new road, our road, a locked
steel gate was installed along with a guard shack and warning signs that
the road was private and anyone not authorized on it with motor vehicles
would be prosecuted for criminal trespass.  My Canadian attorney wrote it
up and we also placed several gates along the road, which was 50 miles in
length.  Welded cable and heavy padlocks, master keyed to each other,
secured the road.



   The logging company was paid by the sale of logs cleared from our
roadway.  A initial clearing of 300 feet square was cleared to allow the
building of our home.  Only the trees needed to be removed were removed. 
The remainder of the trees were selected and thinned to provid the lumber
necessary.  The logging company farmed the trees from the land and stacked
the logs so they could cure for at least six months.  Our homesite borders

   Carol contacted a company that specializes in log houses and together
they designed our home.  It would be 4,000 sq.  ft.  in two stories, not
including an attached garage that could hold 4 cars.  The roads would not
be paved, but our drive and parking area would be graveled.  Construction
of the road began 2 months after the papers were signed.  I became the
general manager of this operation and had to coordinate all phases of
construction.  The roadway gates were designed, welded and delivered on
time and installed as soon as the roadway was clear of trees.



   Spring and summer are short in the northern latitudes so much of the
work could not be done until after the first snowfall until spring.  This

school.  Carol also took some advanced courses in education so she could

   April 1st: The Airstream was ready for delivery.  The tow truck was
ready complete with an additional 40 gallon fuel cell and larger capacity
oil pan, oil and transmission cooler.  Even though we were moving to the
colder climate, we chose to keep air conditioning on both vehicles.  Carol
and I both took driving courses to better equip ourselves to our new
vehicles and practiced in and around our town.  Jessica was getting excited
as the day drew near to leaving.  Our house was sold on Friday.  We spent

proceeded to leave town.  We still had shopping to complete.

   I guess now is the time to tell you, the reader, how we plan to live in
this out of the way wilderness without electricity, and TV and other
amenities.  Our refrigeration and freezer are dual powered; gas and
electricity.  We will have two 2500 gallon LPG tanks installed and piped to
the house.  The gas provider has already gotten the tanks and installed
dual gas lines in separate trenches one backing the other.  The lines are
buried 36 inches deep to prevent freezing, though that is really not
possible.  Also, since we will be living on a large river fed lake, we will
pump our water from it.  The pipes were already installed when the footings
were dug.  The 3 inch draw pipe lays on the bottom of the lake and extends
200 feet out into the lake and is about 40 feet down on the bottom with a
filter and check valve arrangement.  The pump runs on diesel and there is
no chance of running out of diesel, even in the harshest winter.



   Satellite TV via a dish will be installed during the summer.  The TV
people assured us that we should have no problems with reception except on
heavy cloud days.  We will even be able to have internet through the dish
setup.  2 laptops and one desktop station with additional hard drives will
be installed.  I also have obtained delivery of DVDs regularly to be
delivered by air drop every two weeks.  My bush pilot has become a close
friend and will deliver our mail and other items as may be needed.  Doctor
visits are scheduled during the spring and summer when we can drive out. 
Emergencies will be handled as the need occurs.



   The house is now taking shape.  The plumbing is roughed in.  The
basement has been blocked and the floor joists installed.  The basement
floor has been poured and walls will be started in two weeks.  Framing for
the top two floors is underway.  The weather is beginning to warm up nicely
in the daytime but is still cold at night.  Our site does not get much sun
except at midday even though the house faces due south and is very

secure them.  The boom on the tractor would only allow us to reach out
about 10 feet without losing the tractor in the lake so we had to build the
dock wide enough and with strong enough material to hold the weight of the
tractor.  Using our own cut 4 x 16 rough cut beams, marked and drilled them
for the anchor plates and bolts.  After they were drilled and the posts
drilled, it was time to get wet and install the beams.  I had a dry suit
that I used to wear for diving so into the water I went.  The water was
cold as I secured the first beam to the post loosely and Jake, my friend,
secured the land end.  It took us a half day to get the 3 beams installed
and secured.  A couple of days later we had the dock floor bolted and ready
to test the strength of the dock.



   We slowly backed the tractor onto the dock and wallah, it didn't sink or
break the deck.  We finished the drilling and installed the remaining logs
and called it a day.  I was so happy that a party was called for.  When we
