Kims New Experiences - Part 2 It's only been a week since Jake left on assignment so I'm a bit surprised when I get a message from him. The tone of his message is quite different to his previous ones, he sounds very edgy. He says he's in a bit of a tight spot, doesn't think it's anything he can't handle, he can't say too much about it but he's doesn't think he is in immediate danger. This sets my heart racing immediately, what does he mean by danger? He goes on to say he's come across the name of the company I work for a few times, it's strange he admits, but there is some connection he doesn't understand with my company and this assignment he is on. Then his message ends abruptly with him saying he has to go offline, will try come back soon. As I finish reading his message my heart and mind are racing, what danger could he be in in South Africa? I don't know much about the country except what I have seen and read in the news. Jake never told me the name of the company he now works for or much about his position there or the assignment he was going on. I'm left with nothing I can do to placate my alarmed state, I can only wait for him to contact me again. I check my profile page far too often for the rest of the day but no new messages from Jake arrive. The constant banal updates from my other "friends" online drive me crazy instead, every time I see a change on my page I am hoping it is Jake saying all is well but it isn't. That night I sleep very restlessly, I know so little about Jake's life since leaving school, even so since getting back in touch with him I feel the connection we used to have. His message was so brief and I don't quite know how to take his reference to being in danger. I alternate between extremes of thinking he is surely fine and thinking he is being held captive in some dark and scary place and I will never hear from him again. When I wake up to my alarm in the morning I feel as though I have hardly been to sleep. I hurriedly get dressed and rush to work. When I am logged in I see there is a new message from Jake, my heart skips a beat as I open it. At least he is alive I think, then I read the message. It's not the "all is clear" message I was hoping for, Jake sounds frantic this time. He asks me if I know of a Jim Spencer who works for my company, he can't go into any detail he says, no time to, but he needs to know what projects this Jim was working on over the last few years, can I help. He can't say more now but any and all information I can get him on Jim might help, might save him he says. It's very urgent the sooner I can respond the better. My heart races, I check when Jake sent the message to me, it was only 10 minutes before I got into the office. I open up the companies internal HR systems and log in, then do a search for "Jim Spencer". The system returns a single result, Jake it would seem has his facts right. But the system wont allowed me to access Jims HR file with my credentials, it would seem I have a to lowly access level. I think, recently my manager gave me his login info for the HR system when I had to do some research for him, I decide to try his login. I am soon in under my managers credentials, this time I am able to access Jim Spencer's HR file. Of course I am not sure if its unabridged, I read through but don't see anything that could be deemed in any way suspicious or even relevant to any danger. After all I work for a bank what would I expect to find? The file contains a history of positions held within the company and a number of short notes on projects contributed towards but nothing much else. I don't think this is going to be much use to Jake but I copy the contents into a message back to him and send it straight away anyway. Then I wait. I hear nothing back. I hope Jake got my message and it helps him in his situation but that's all I can do is hope. That night I hardly sleep at all again, I didn't hear again from Jake since the first message. To be continued.
