Danny and Ethan

"Scoot over Ethan, I can't see!" Danny whispered with a grunt as
he tried to catch a glimpse inside the garage door window. "Where
is it? I don't see anything, it's too dark."

"It should be right inside, I swear!" Ethan said emphatically.
"I saw it go in earlier. Maybe if we look in from the side."

"I don't want to get caught! What if they see us? Danny asked
nervously.

"Nah, they won't even know we're here, as long as we're quiet."

Ethan's ten year old small frame made little noise tiptoeing
around the corner of the garage. He's was a reserved child,
usually teased by the other boys in schools as long as Danny
wasn't around. Danny was twelve and acted as Ethan's protector
whenever he saw trouble. He wasn't a big kid. He was tall and
thin, but thick in skin. Other kids tended to not pick on him
because he would stand up for himself and anyone else that need
defending. But Ethan was his number one priority. They were
cousins that grew up living next door to each other until Ethan's
mom got a new job across town three years prior.

"I still don't see anything!" Ethan said impatiently. "It's too
dark!"

"Ya know, you won't see anything as long as the lights are off."
Came a voice from around the corner. "How's that?"

	The lights flickered on.

"Aah! Run Danny!" Ethan said in a panic.

"Hi Mr. Smith." Danny said disappointingly.

	"Wait, you know him?"

"Yeah. Mr. Smith, this is my cousin Ethan I told you about."

"Well, hi there Ethan. Look's like I blew your cover Danny." He
said with a chuckle. And I told you to call me Zachary.

"Hey, no fair! You know him. You lied!" Ethan moaned

Ethan's attention shifted to the garage. Parked inside was a
big, white ambulance. Complete with red and blue lights on top
and big blue lettering in the sides that read, "Clark County
EMS."

"Wow, that's so cool!" Ethan said with excitement. "Do you get
to drive it around Zachary?"

"Well, sometimes I drive with my brother Noah to the hospital.
He's the paramedic, I'm just a nursing student. It's his truck."

"I want to be an EMT when I grow up!" Ethan said proudly.

	"Me too!" Danny chimed in.

"Maybe sometime I could give you guy's a ride in it sometime?"

"Wow! Really? That would be so awesome!" Ethan said jumping up
and down.

"Hey Danny, is your mom around?"

	"Yeah, she's inside the house."

"Well, it was nice meeting you Ethan. I'll see you boys around.
I'm going to go talk to Danny's mom." Zachary said as he made his
way to Danny's front porch.

"See, I told you there was an ambulance in there Ethan." Danny
said lightly punching Ethan in the arm.

"You said you didn't really know the neighbors Danny."

"Yeah, I know. Sorry." Danny said embarrassingly. "Zachary's
cool though. He went to school with my mom. They've known each
other for a long time I guess. His brother Noah is cool too."

"God, that would be so cool to ride in the ambulance." Ethan
said. "I wonder if we'd get to play with any of the machine's and
stuff?"

"I really doubt it. I don't think his brother would like that.
We could break something."

The boy's gazed into the garage. Imagining the wonders that
awaited inside. For the rest of the day they thought of the ride
offered to them. The last things they thought about before
drifting off to sleep that night were the mysteries that awaited
them.

The next morning the boys sat at the kitchen table eating their
breakfast.

"So boy's, Zachary came over yesterday and said you wanted to
take a ride in the ambulance, is that right?" Danny's mom Phillis
asked.

"Yeah, Aunt Phillis. That would be so cool!" Ethan said
excitedly

"Yeah, could we mom?" Danny asked

"Well, Zachary was going to go pick up his nephew David and take
him up to his Noah's cabin for the day and bring him back
tomorrow. He said it wouldn't be a problem using the ambulance
for a night, Noah's off anyway. You guy's want to go with them."
She asked

Both boys froze, looked at each other with wide eyes.

"Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God! Really? We can, we can? Ethan
asked frantically.

	"Really Mom? We can?"

"Well, I don't see why not." Phillis said. "There's a lake up
there, so you guy's could go swimming too. But you have to
promise to be good and listen to Zachary, okay?"

	"Yeah Mom. We promise"

"Yeah, Aunt Phillis. We'll be good, I swear."

"Okay then. Well finish eating your breakfast and go pack a
change of clothes and your swimming trunks."

The boy's wolfed down there cereal and dashed up the stairs and
into Danny's bedroom to pack.

"Ethan, this is going to be so awesome! I can't believe we get
to ride in an ambulance!"

"I know, this is so cool! Zachary's awesome too, he's always so
much fun. He comes over all the time and plays video games with
me all the time. He's also taken me swimming a few times at the
waterpark. He's really cool."

	A couple hours later.

"Why don't you boys hop in the front there and I'll put your
bags in the back." Zachary told the boys.

"Aww, when are we gonna get to see all the cool stuff back
there?" Danny asked sounding deflated.

"Don't worry." Zachary chuckled. "They'll be plenty of time for
that once we get up to the cabin. I don't want you guy's riding
in the back with all the equipment."

The boys and Zachary hopped in the truck and buckled their
safety belts.

	"Ready boys? Let's go."

It wasn't a long drive, about an hour. They talked about
subjects ranging from video games to, of course, the ambulance
and what being in the medical field is like.

"Well boys, this is it. Cool huh? Right over there is the lake
and if you look by the tree there, you can see a big rope swing
where you can swing out over the lake and jump in. Let's get your
stuff out and into the cabin."

"Too bad your nephew got sick and couldn't come." Ethan said
while slinging his backpack over his shoulder.

"We'll still have fun though." Danny said with a smile.

Zachary showed them into the cabin and led the boys into their
room.

"I'm going to put your bags in the closet here in your room. I'm
going to put one of my bags in here too, up on the top shelf.
Make sure you don't mess with it, okay?" Zachary instructed as he
positioned his bag so that the top faced outwards.

"Oops, looks like it won't fit in here any other way."

"Okay, we're all settled in now Zachary, can we see the back of
the ambulance now?" Danny questioned eagerly.

"Alright, I suppose you've waited long enough." Zachary said
with a laugh.

The boys ran outside to the back of the ambulance and began
jumping around.

Zachary showed them all the various tools and gadgets,
telling them how and what they are used for. The boy's then
noticed a big red box in the corner.

	"What's that Zachary?" Ethan queried.

"Oh, that's an EKG machine." Zachary puts his hand on Ethan's
chest. "It makes sure your heart is working right."

"Can you show how it works?" Danny asked

"Well, I don't know --" Zachary said holding back a smile

"PLEASE?" The boy's said in unison

"Well, okay. But let's take it into the cabin."

They made there way into the bedroom and the boys sat down on
the bed.

"Let me just grab something from my bag first."

Zachary unzipped his bag and dug around inside and retrieved a
key, leaving the bag unzipped.

"Here we go." Zachary unlocked the box and opened it. He then
began to unbutton his shirt. "Let me show you on myself how this
works."

He then began to attach the leads onto his chest.

"One more up here and there we go, that's all of them." He
turned on the machine.

"See how that little graph there jumps up and down like that?
That does that every time my heart beats." He grabbed one of
Ethan's hands and placed it on his chest.

"Feel that?" He then grabbed one of Danny hands and showed him

"Ooh, ooh!" Danny blurted. "Can you show us on us?"

"Well, I guess I could do that. Why don't you boys take your
shirts off. Can't do it through your clothes." Zachary said with
a smile. "Better yet, why don't you guys go ahead and change into
your swim trunks and afterwards you can go swimming. You wanna do
that?"

"Yeah, yeah! That would be cool." Said Ethan

Danny grabbed his trunks and began to make his way out of the
bedroom and into the bathroom down the hall.

"Wait Danny." Zachary shouted. "Why don't you two get changed
here in the bedroom. I'll shut the door. I've got to use the
bathroom anyways."

Zachary smiled and shut the door behind him and let the boys
change. Then returned.

"Okay, you want to go first Ethan?" Zachary asked

	"Yeah!" Ethan nodded.

"Alright, let me see. Lie down there on your back. I've gotta
make sure exactly where your heart is so I can put the leads in
the right place." He said as he placed his ear on Ethan's chest.
"Yup, there it is. Boom, boom...boom, boom, it's there alright."
He smiled while his eyes closed slightly.

"Okay, last one. There ya go. See how it's jumping up and down
just like mine did? Guess you're alive!" Zachary chuckled.

The boys watched in wonder as Zachary showed them how the
machine worked. In awe of how a machine could identify how and
when their little hearts beat, again and again. After a few
minutes each. Zachary removed the electrodes from their chests
and took them outside to the swing and lake. They all spent the
afternoon swimming and swinging from the rope. Looking around the
surrounding woods for bugs, and having fun. The boys went to bed
that night exhausted from the day they had, filled with learning
and fun. They drifted off to sleep imagining growing up to become
paramedics helping people.

In the morning Zachary quietly open the boy's bedroom door.
Looking in, pausing a moment to watch them sleep.

"Good morning boys! Time to get up!" He loudly proclaimed. "Time
for breakfast."

The boys sleepily made their way to the small kitchen and saw
piles of pancakes and waffles, bacon and eggs.

"Yeah, I might have gone a little overboard." Zachary said with
a laugh while scratching his head. "Might as well eat up!"

After about an hour, they all sat around with full bellies and
satiated appetites.

"Okay boys, why don't you go ahead and get your showers. Use the
bathroom connected to your bedroom. The drain works better in
there. I'll get these dishes all cleaned up. Let me grab
something from my bag real quick before you get in there."

About a half an hour later, Zachary is wiping off the kitchen
counter when he hears a noises coming from the boys bedroom. He
makes his way over to their door and takes a closer listen. He
hear a romping around and laughing. He silently cracks the door
open and peaks inside. The boys are in their tidy whities
wrestling with one another. He watches them for a couple of
minutes. Attaining an erection the entire time. He chuckles, and
with a smile he quietly closes the door and returns to the
kitchenette. A few minutes later the noise emanating from the
bedroom intensifies. Zachary makes his way back to the bedroom.

	"I think -- I'm gonna -- pass -- out -- Eth --" Danny garbled as
Ethan squeezed the chokehold in deeper.

"Okay boys, it's starting to get too loud in --" Zachary said as
he opened the bedroom door. " --here."

Ethan jumped up, releasing Danny from the hold. Danny fell
forwards, smacking his chest hard on the table at the foot of the
bed.

"Uhh!" Danny grunted as he hit. His body clenched up then
relaxed, motionless.

Zachary ran over to Danny. "Are you okay?" he asked. Zachary
gave no response.

	"DANNY!" Ethan cried

Zachary kneeled beside Danny's near naked body.

Danny lay there, unmoving, mouth and eyes open. Zachary checked
for a pulse and felt nothing. He pressed his ear to his chest and
heard only silence.

	"Shit!" Zachary blurted.

Ethan sat at the edge of the bed, sobbing. "We were just
playing! Is Danny going to be okay?

"Ethan. Look, this is very important. Run out to the back of the
ambulance. There is a blue box on the shelf. You need to bring it
too me. Okay? RUN! HURRY!"

Zachary put his hand on Danny's bare chest. Pausing for a split
second. Then placed his other hand on top of the first and began
doing chest compressions.

"One, two, three, four, five." He gave him a breath. Then
continued the compressions. "This wasn't supposed to happen like
this. Come on Danny!" He checked for a pulse, but felt none. He
continued.

Ethan came running in, still in his briefs, carrying the blue
box.

"Is this it?" he asked, tears still rolling down his face.

	"Yes, Ethan. That's it. Good."

Zachary opened the box and pulled out the cardiac defibrillator.
He placed the electrodes onto Danny's chest and looked and the
monitor.

"Shit, shit, shit! Full VF." Zachary cursed "Ethan, stand back
for me."

He charged the defibrillator, applied the conductive gel, and
placed the paddles on Danny's chest, and pressed the button.
Danny's young body arched up and relaxed again. The monitor
jumped then returned into VF.

	"Damn it!" Zachary shouted.

Again he shocked the boy and again failed.

"Come on Danny, don't do this to me!" Zachary said as he shocked
him again. Nothing.

In his panic, he failed to see Ethan grab Danny's lifeless hand.
The boy, unaware of the peril he places himself.
Zachary places the paddles on Danny again and presses the
button. Danny flails. And Ethan flies back.

	"Ahhh!" Ethan screams in pain

"Ethan!" Zachary shouts as he scoots over to him.

Zachary places his hand under Ethan's head and lifts it up.
Ethan gasps and looks into Zachary's eyes. His eyes blink, his
chest falls and his stare gazes blankly forward.

"No, no, no! This can't be happening. He pauses and hears a
beeping behind him. "Danny!"

He gently places Ethan's head on the floor and rushes over to
Danny. He sees on the monitor that Danny's heart has returned to
a normal rhythm.

After he sees that Danny will be okay for the moment. He
hurriedly plucks the leads from his chest and rushes back to
Ethan's side. He quickly replaces the pads on the leads and
places them all over Ethan's still chest. He looks at the monitor
only to see that Ethan's heart is too in chaos.

"Okay, listen to me Ethan." He whispers into Ethan's ear.
"Please, come back. You can do it!"

He puts the gel onto Ethan's chest, presses the paddles down,
closes his eyes and fires. Ethan's body arches up and back again.

Ethan's tiny little body never seemed so frail, so soft, so --
innocent, than it did at that moment. "If only I hadn't offered
the boys to come up, none of this would have happened" Zachary
thought to himself as his eyes look down at Ethan's body. "But
then I couldn't have gotten --"

	Beep --beep --beep

Zachary looked up. He saw Ethan's chest rise and fell with each
breath. He looked over to see Danny's doing the same. He looked
back down at Ethan. He placed his ear down onto his chest, closed
his eyes and listened to Ethan's now beating heart. For a moment
he felt his own heart beat as one with it. He removed the leads
and wiped the gel off of the boy's chests.

After a few minutes, the boys slowly began to regain
consciousness. He explained to the them, as best he could, what
had happened and that he needed to take the boys the hospital to
make sure they were okay.

While driving back home from the hospital, Zachary kept
replaying in his head everything that had transpired. His cock
surprisingly began to swell all the while.

Zachary opened his front door. There Noah sat on the couch
watching TV. Zachary flopped down beside him.

"Well?" Noah asked as he looked over at Zachary. "Get anything
good?"

Zachary snickered, reached into his duffle bag and retrieved a
small camcorder.

"Oh yeah, you have no idea!" Zachary said smiling slyly as he
handed the camcorder to his brother.

"Good!" Noah say's smiling back. "Good!"

-the end.
