   The windshield wipers were beating a steady rhythm fighting to clear the
glass.  The radio was playing an old 60's song and the wipers were actually

and find it.  I hung up and looked at the road ahead to see if I could see

of the rain.

   As I drove I saw someone walking along side the road pushing a bicycle.

   "Fine, I'll call you after the meeting." I told him right before I
disconnected the call.

   "Thanks for not saying anything.  He would have nagged me forever,
mostly because I was the one that made that rule." I told the youngster

   "Thank you for stopping.  I appreciate it." She said.

   Her voice was shaking.  I asked if she was cold and she told me that she
was freezing.  I saw the Golden Arches in the distance and asked if she
would like a cup of coffee or hot chocolate to warm up.  She informed me

   "I'll explain it all.  They probably know who I am anyway."

   "Why would they know you.  Are you famous?"

   "Have you heard of Taco Shack?"

   "Well duh, who hasn't?" She smiled sweetly.

   "Well duh, my partner and I own them all."

   "No way.  You're that Alex?"

   "I suppose so.  So see, I bet they've heard of me too."

   "We eat there all the time.  Dad loves it." She giggled.

   "Then it's settled.  You'll come to the hotel and we will get things
straightened out with your parents."

   "Okay, thank you Alex."

   I pulled up to the front of the hotel.  A valet opened the door for me
then went around and opened the door for Sophia.  Thankfully we were under
a canopy so we didn't get any more soaked than we already were.  I told
Sophia to wait by the elevators while I checked in.

   "Yes sir, may I help you?" The desk clerk asked.

   "I believe you have a reservation for me.  Alex, Alex Brighton."

   "Of course Mr.  Brighton, your suite is all ready." He said as he handed
me the key card.  When he called for a bellhop, I told him that I had no
luggage because I wasn't expecting to spend the night.  He nodded telling
me that the meeting was rescheduled for 10 a.m.  I thanked him and headed
for the elevators where Sophia was patiently waiting.

   "Wow, this is all for you?" She said as I opened the double doors of the
suite.

   "What can I do for you Mr.  Brighton?"

   "Please, call me Alex."

   "Let me explain what's going on Tom.  I was driving to a meeting tonight
during a heavy rain storm when I saw your daughter pushing her bike."

   "Wait a minute." He interrupted.  "It couldn't be my daughter, she's at
a friends house spending the weekend."

   "Here, I will let her explain the circumstances." I told him as I handed
the phone to Sophia.

   I sat and listened to her explain everything that happened so far
tonight.  When she was done there was silence on the other end of the
phone. I took the phone from her and told Tom that she would be safe with
me.

   "Alex, I'm sure you're a nice guy but she's only 12.  I'm not

I will take her there immediately and call you when we arrive."

   I handed the phone back to Sophia.  She asked him if he was mad at her.
He sighed and told her no, that he understood her dilemma.  He instructed
her to behave herself and be sure to thank Alex for everything.  She told
her dad that I had been nothing but a gentleman so far and extremely nice.
She talked to her mother too for a short time before she hung up the phone.


   "See, you worried about something that didn't even happen." I smiled at

   "Are you hungry?"

   "Well, we can't go out dressed like this and our clothes are still wet
so I guess it will have to be room service."

over it and found what I was looking for, a nice prime rib.  I handed the

back to the couch and focused on the TV again.  I picked up the house phone
