read my Herald Of Armageddon story will really get it, so don't be surprised
if you read a certain bit and don't know what the hell the point of that
paragraph was. Also, we're a long way behind here, only up to about the
third season of DS9 and the second of Voyager, so forgive any continuity
errors, I've done my best with what I could find.

Star Trek : The Next Generation - Shadows : Chapter Seven

Riker smiled as Deanna came awake.
	"Will?" she asked.
"Thank goodness you're all right," he said with a wink, knowing
that as long as the Safety Protocol's were in place Deanna couldn't
really be hurt.
	"How are the others?"
"Fine, can't say I'm happy to see you brought O'Brien with you,
he tried to kill me you know?"
"We had no choice," she replied, sitting up and clutching her
head, which throbbed with agony. One thing was for sure, this program
seemed damn real, she lowered her voice,"We had to keep up the pretence
of looking after our own, which O'Brien technically is."
"You know, you couldn't have picked a worse moment to escape," he
laughed good naturedly,"When Geordi lowered the Shields so you could get
out, you left the Enterprise vulnerable to attack, the Dominion have
captured it."
"Damn," muttered a voice, Riker turned to face Geordi,"I knew
the Enterprise was going to swing nearby DS9 before heading to the Badlands
to try to find the Captain's hiding place, so I figured we could hide in
the Jeffries Tubes until we got near, then we could escape."
"Doesn't matter," grinned Riker,"We can't get out of this damn
program," he looked towards the hologrammatic Doctor, who was checking the
still unconscious No'Kase,"Until the Dominion threat has been ended,
Captain Picard is taking care of that right now."
As he explained to them about Marvek, Tuvok sat on the Bridge
monitoring their conversation, he nodded to himself and shut down the link.

	---

"I can do this alone," snapped Moriaty.
"Not without knowing their Shield Frequency," replied Picard with
a grin,"Which I do."
"Why don't you give it to B'Elanna?" asked Harry, watching as
Moriaty and Picard piled barrel after barrel of explosive material into
the shuttlecraft.
"The Shield Frequency?" asked Picard,"Because we'll only have time
for one good shot at their Engines, and then they'll be able to remodulate
it and Voyager will be a sitting duck."
"There's no need for you to die too," grunted Moriaty as he and
Picard lifted the last barrel.
"Oh no," laughed Picard,"I'm not letting you be a martyr alone,
besides, it may have a new Captain, but it's still MY ship, and if anyone
is going to destroy it, it'll be me!"
Moriaty frowned at him for a few seconds, then his mouth widened
into an uncharacteristically wide grin,"Damn it Picard, but I wish we could
have had the time to get to know each other better, we'd have been great
friends!"
Picard just smiled back as Harry shook his head in wonder.

	-

	"Ready?" asked Torres.
"We just need two minutes distraction," came Picard's reply,"Give
us that and then destroy the Wormhole!"
Torres nodded and Picard's face disappeared of the monitor, she
turned to Harry.
"De-cloak us Mr Kim, show those alien bastards our ass!"

	-

On board the Bridge of the Enterprise the Founder held Sisko in
an iron grip.
"We will fire on the solids city in exactly one minute," she
said,"If you do not give us the Shield Frequencies on the other ships in
your Fleet."
	"I don't know them!" gasped Sisko,"Please...I can't breath!"
"Then you should adapt," replied the Founder with a grin,"Or is
that beyond your 'solid' capabilities?"
"Just kill him," muttered Odo, stepping up next to the Founder,"If
we kill him one of the other crew members will tell us."
Sisko still couldn't believe that it had been Odo who had let the
Founders onto the Station, providing them with all the information they
needed to take DS9 - his price had been small, he wanted Kira for himself.
"Founder!" cried one of the Jem'Hadar on the bridge,"A Federation
ship is decloaking of the port bow!"
She turned and stared at the sleek Voyager as it appeared before
their eyes on the viewscreen,"Send the Fleet after it," she yelled,"I
recognize it from information reports, it's nearly as advanced as this
ship, though not quite as powerful."
Voyager moved gracefully through space, it's Shields easily
absorbing the Jem'Hadar fighters blasts, it fired back, destroying a
fighter with one blast.
"Registering shuttlecraft approaching us!" cried the
Jem'Hadar,"Shall we fire?"
"No," replied Odo with a sly grin,"That's what they want, firing
will open a small hole in our Shields, and they'll come through and smash
into the Bridge, it's a kamikaze run!"
"Hold Shields," said the Founder, smiling her appreciation at
Odo,"The Voyager is lost, it can't defeat so many of our own ships, we'll
knock down it's Shields bit by bit and then take it like we took
Enterprise."

	-

"Okay Picard, what's the Shield Frequency?" muttered Moriaty,"If
we get any closer to those Shields we'll be crushed!"
	"257.4," replied Picard.
Moriaty grinned and typed in the commands.

	-

"Our shields are dropping!" cried the Jem'Hadar.
"What?" cried the Founder, spinning around and facing the alien
warrior.
"Shuttlecraft on collision course with main engineering!"
Her eyes met Odo's for a brief second, they both shared the same
dull realization.
	The Warp Core!
"Jake," whispered Sisko, calling the name of his son, killed with
his mother by the Borg so many years ago,"I'm coming Jake."

	-

"What the hell?" cried Picard, feeling the familiar lurch in his
stomach as the transport beam grabbed him.
"Only one martyr today Picard!" laughed Moriaty, grinning sadly.
As Picard was pulled away by the transport beam, the man who had
been arch-nemesis of Sherlock Holmes and held the crew of the Enterprise
hostage stared at the oncoming ship with no fear in his heart.
"It seems that I will not go gently into the good night after
all," he said with a grin, reaching for his cane as the Shuttle rocketed
towards the Enterprise,"But will rage, rage against the dying of the
light."

	-

Torres shielded her eyes as the Enterprise exploded on the screen,
the shuttlecraft smashing into Main Engineering, causing an instantaneous
Warp Core breach.
"Set course for the Wormhole," she cried.
Next to her a transport beam appeared, coalescing into the figure
of Picard, who dropped to his knees.
	"What the?" she cried.
"Our shields were lowered by the shuttlecraft," cried
Harry,"Moriaty must have beamed him back!"
	"Forget that," gasped Picard,"The Wormhole!"
Tuvok re-raised the Shields and Voyager sped towards the Wormhole,
Jem'hdar ships reverted to reflex after the initial shock of seeing the
Enterprise destroyed and began firing on Voyager.
"Shields at 25%" Tuvok informed Torres,"At this rate we shall have
lost Shields before we reach the Wormhole."
"Go to cloak," cried Torres,"They don't know that we're heading for
the Wormhole, they probably think we're trying to make it to Bajor."
"May I remind the Captain that since the Wormhole was strengthened
by the Founders, it had been impossible for any ship under cloak to
successfully traverse the Wormhole," cried Data.
"No!" yelled Torres as the ship was rocked by another blast,"Just
engage cloak!"
Voyager instantly became invisible, and the Jem'Hadar
ships hesitated for several seconds, then began firing in the general
direction of DS9 and Bajor, hoping to hit a lucky spot.
"We're emitting tachyon bursts," muttered Harry,"If they have a
smart science officer were dead."
Voyager creeped along at impulse power, then suddenly the Wormhole
sprang open in front of them. Instantly Jem'Hadar began firing towards it,
guessing at the location of Voyager.
"Drop cloak and take us through!" roared Torres and Tuvok complied,
disengaging the cloak and sending Voyager through the Wormhole entrance,
which sealed up behind them.
	"Moriaty's device?" asked Tuvok.
"Activate it and beam it out before they follow us through," she
yelled.
Inside the Wormhole, the small device beamed out into the Wormhole
corridor and immediately tendrils of blue fire reached out and grabbed it,
attracted by energy emissions coming from the small, mechanical device.
"Move!" cried Torres,"Or we'll be stuck here!"
The other side of the Wormhole opened up and they were pulled
through, instantly powering up to Warp and speeding away from
the remainder of the Fleet on the Gamma Quadrant side.
	"Are they chasing?" asked Torres.
"Negative," replied Tuvok,"Thier sensors registered us, but they
didn't even bother to scan us."
"I recall reading that all of the Founders - with the exception of
Odo - had a shared mind," said Data,"Perhaps the death of one caused a
feedback to the others?"
"And the Jem'Hadar are useless without orders," said Torres with a
laugh, behind them the Wormhole collapsed in a flare of white light.
"We can't assume that feedback will last forever," said Picard,"I
suggest we get as far from the Dominion as we can."
	Torres laughed.
"Make it so," she said and Voyager sped away.

	---

They gathered in Picards temporary quarters as soon as they got
the chance.
"Well," said Valdez,"It's time we left, who knows how far Marvek
has gotten now?"
"Agreed," said Picard,"Although I must admit that coming here was
a most enlightening experience."
"Like going through the looking glass," said Geordi with
a grin,"But I'll be just as happy to go back through and discover this
was all a dream."
"We wish," muttered Valdez to herself,"More like a nightmare."
"Computer, Arch," said Picard, next to him a large archway appeared
with monitors and computers along the inside walls, he stepped into it.
"Computer, disengage holosuite from Moriaty Cube."
All about them, Picard's quarters disappeared, to be replaced by
the dully glowing yellow grid on black walls.
Marvek was sitting against one of the walls with his knees up by
his shoulders, he looked up in shock as the others appeared, then a blank
expression covered his face.
"Excellent, can I assume you have the information you wanted from
Moriaty?" he asked Valdez.
"Spare me," she said, reaching for her phaser, but she
was interrupted by a phaser blast firing past her wrist..
"I wouldn't," came an even voice, they all turned and stared in
shock at Tuvok, who stood with a gun leveled at them,"I can assure you that
that was a warning shot, the next shall not miss."
"Tuvok! what are you doing here?" cried Riker.
"I first became aware that I was living in a hologrammatic world
when Officer Valdez and Captain Picard first accessed the Starfleet
Database from Maquis headquarters. I used the same command code she had
used to access the true computer and commanded it to save me when it shut
down the program."
"But why?" asked Deanna,"Why would you want.."
"Because I accessed your files and discovered that the program
was a self evolving system, and came to the conclusion that I was not
merely a sprite, but a sentient being in my own right. I know from the
computer's records that when you came across a similar being once before
you trapped him in that Universe," he pointed at the Cube,"For whatever
reason, I do not really care why, I simply have no wish to share the same
fate."
"You've got it wrong," started Data,"We didn't trap Moriaty in
there because he was sentient, we...."
"Quiet," interrupted Tuvok evenly, not interested in the least in
what the Android had to say,"You fear sentient programmes for some reason,
this is illogical but true, and so I was therefore forced to defend
myself."
"Power levels have returned to normal," came the Computers voice,
a wide grin split Marvek's face.
"Excellent, I don't have time to listen to this sprite drone on,"
he strode purposefully towards the doors and Tuvok fired without changing
expression. Marvek was blasted back against the wall and slumped down.
Beverly rushed to him and checked for a pulse.
"Nothing," she said in shock,"He's dead."
"As I feared," said Data,"Tuvok has disengaged safety protocols."
"Exactly," replied the Vulcan,"Do not attempt to trap me in one of
your prisons, I am a living person, even if I am a hologram, and I intend
to venture out into the real world and live."
He stepped carefully backwards to the doors, which opened behind
him, he stepped past the threshold without changing expression, but Picard
sensed something akin to satisfaction and relief coming from him.
"Goodbye," he said to them,"I wish you no harm....." he gasped as
he felt his legs tingle, looking down his mouth dropped open and he
revealed shock.
"I tried to warn you," said Data,"You may be aware of your nature,
but you are far from sentient, or you would have been able to break the way
you were programmed to behave, much like Moriaty did before his sacrifice."
Tuvok felt no pain, only a mad tingling as his body slowly drifted
away into nothing, unable to support itself outside of a holosuite.
Finally he was gone.
Valdez looked down at Marvek's body and shook her head, she would
have to go to Odo for help in finding where he might have stored the
Database, that was probably the most irritating thing of all. She absently
wondered how Operation : Trojan Horse had gone as she tapped her
communicator and called for a couple of her Security Team to come down
and get the body.
As Worf, Deanna, Beverly and Geordi picked their communicators of
the ground, Riker, Data and Picard walked over to where the Cube was
inserted in the console.
"Use your tricorder to record what happened while we were in
there," said Picard to Data,"I want a copy of what happened in
the Enterprise library." (*)
"It's a pity Moriaty had to die," said Riker,"I feel like he
had really changed, despite being a member of this.....Protectorate."
"I doubt that he is dead," replied Data, Picard and Riker turned
to stare at the Android in shock.
"What do you mean?" asked Picard.
"I am sorry sir, I thought you would have figured it out for
yourself," offered Data,"You see the program revolves around Moriaty,
despite keeping side histories going for all the other sprites, if Moriaty
is gone....the program ends."
"Are you saying the moment that Moriaty 'died', we should have
found ourselves back in the Holosuite?" asked Riker.
"Exactly," answered Data,"Which leads me to believe that Moriaty's
so called sacrifice was nothing more than a ruse to get out from under the
Federation's gaze."
"He's a free agent again," said Picard, a wide grin spreading his
lips,"Damn him but I was sad to see him go, I thought it was the most noble
thing I'd seen since Kirk's death!"
The three of them stood silently for a few minutes, then one by one
they all began to laugh.

	---

For several seconds, there was no one in Picard's cabin, then the
alternates reappeared, the actions of their real counterparts implanted in
their memories.
"So what first?" asked Riker, looking at Picard.
Picard sat down at the table,"First? First we play a little
poker."
The others sat down at the table with him as he dealt out the
cards.
	"And second?" pressed Riker.
"Second, Will," said Picard with a grin,"Second of all I'm going
to stress the fact to you that this is a Starfleet ship, even if it is lost
in the Gamma Quadrant, and I'm a Starfleet Captain."
	"Ex-Starfleet Captain." said Data evenly.
"Why quibble," replied Picard, throwing some chips into
the pot,"I'm still the closest thing to a real Captain - Janeway is
certainly in no position to take over - and tomorrow I'm going to have a
sit down with Torres and explain a few things to her."
The others nodded their approval, and then spoke no more of it,
merely playing poker like old friends, reunited after a long absence.

	---

"Sir Arthur Conan Doyle," said the man, whirling the cane in
his hand, it was a special cane - not because of the lovingly varnished
real wood body, or the gleaming silver eagles head atop it. No it was
special because pushing the right places activated a transport beam that
would take him to his small shuttle, which had cloaking capabilities.
"Goodbye Father," said the man to the large monument in front of
him, a faint note of nostalgia in his voice,"I'm a free man now, and it's
time I made my own way in the world."
Turning around and leaving the cemetery, Moriaty couldn't help but
whistle a happy tune.

	----
	END.

(*) This explains why things that happened in this story happened
in the prequel - Complexities And Paradoxes (you guessed it, available
upon request!)

	That's it, fini.
Okay then, some loose ends are in there, sorry folks, but this is
an ongoing series after all. Operation : Trojan Horse and all
the unexplained things that happened in this story (like Marvek not being
able to get the Holosuite doors open) will be explained in the sequel,
which will be a DS9 story set at the same time as this story.
