Prominent humanitarian and philanthropist
These otherwise normal and well educated members of our contemporary society are talking about anal-intercourse-the penetration, accompanied by coital movements, of the male or female anus by the erect penis, the finger, tongue, dildo (artificial penis), or other phallicly configured object.
This practice of anal-intercourse is also known as pederasty, pedicatio, buggery and sodomy, although in law the latter term often refers to any type of so-called "unnatural" sex act, including bestiality.
The origin of all these terms lies with the practice of anal-intercourse among male homosexuals. Pederasty and pedicatio derive from the Greek and refer to the old custom of Hellenic warriors during the Golden Age of Greece, who took teenage youths to war with them as lovers and practiced anal-intercourse upon them as a spiritualistic ritual of "blowing the soul" and imparting wisdom into the youngster's "gateway."
Buggery was a term that evolved simply from Bulgar or Bulgarian, and came into usage in Western Europe and Great Britain hundreds of years ago when homosexual practices were ascribed generally to the migration of Bulgars as an ethnic or nationalistic trait.
Sodomy is Biblical in origin. It is taken from the name of the ancient city of Sodom mentioned in the Old Testament where, according to most interpretations of the 19th chapter of Genesis, male homosexuality was so rampant that the men of the town attempted to have anal-intercourse with two male Angels of the Lord who paid a visit.
Through the years, and probably due to the increasing knowledge of man's unlimited modes of sexual behavior, these terms have come to mean to the psychologist, the physician, the psychiatrist, and the knowledgeable layman, any sexual intercourse that involves penetration of the anus of one human by the penis of another.
"The act of pederasty or pedicatio," I explained in ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ABNORMAL SEX (1965), " ... which consists of coitus performed by the incursion of the anal canal with the male member, is thought of mainly as a homosexual practice. Yet it has been discovered that this is anominally widespread practice among heterosexual love partners, including many married couples. Those forbidden to use contraceptives, but who cannot afford or do not want more children, have been known to resort to frequent coitus in ano. And, surprising as it may seem, many women have found that they can attain satisfaction in this way, although it sometimes requires digital assistance at the genitalia."
Anal eroticism also finds expression in many other forms than penile penetration of the anus. Almost any human being, and particularly those of a more than average neurotic nature, are capable of sexual response in this area. In its mildest form, this response is catered to by the finger of the love partner applying pressure, or perhaps a slight insertion at the anus during regular coitus.
Analinctus, the tonguing of the love partner's anus and the lingual penetration thereof, is indulged either actively or passively at one time or another by a great number of people with frequent sexual contacts.
Anal masturbation with vibrators, dildoes and other objects is carried on as an autoerotic as well as an interpersonal act by a vast number of those who have realized their anal-erotic potential.
Surprisingly, although anal-intercourse in its varying heterosexual forms has been with us since time immemorial, it is only recently that we have come to realize it is not at all necessarily related to homosexual desires. Even the most broadminded, progessive and liberal thinkers of 50 to 100 years ago seemed to be of the opinion that heterosexual sodomy was a more perverse and disgusting act than homosexual sodomy.
Pioneering psychiatrist Krafft-Ebing in his classic PSYCHOPATHIA SEXUALIS, was amazingly indifferent and objective in discussing his many cases of sodomy among males. But when it came to male-female anal-intercourse, he dealt with the entire subject in one short paragraph of moral condemnation:
"A horrible act that must be alluded to in conclusion, is paedicatio mulierum (anal-intercourse with females), and even uxorum (with wives). Sensual individuals sometimes do it with hardened prostitutes, or even with their wives. Tardieu gives examples where men, usually practicing coitus, sometimes indulged in pederasty with their wives. Occasionally fear of a repetition of pregnancy may induce the man to perform and the woman to tolerate the act."
Contemporary psychiatrists, psychologists and even some theologians, see little reason to condemn heterosexual sodomy as practiced between the male and female, although some insist that it is symbolic of homosexual desire on the part of the male. In his 1955 book, VARIATIONS IN SEXUAL BEHAVIOR, America's foremost sexologist, Frank Caprio, M.D., stated that:
"Pederasty can be construed as a symptom of latent homosexuality. A woman who lies on her abdomen resembles a man in the same position. The husband performs a homosexual act (sodomy) on his wife and thus gratifies his homosexual desires at the fantasy level."
In his 1961 book, SEXUAL BEHAVIOR, Dr. Caprio seems to clarify that he did not mean ALL such marital indulgences were signs of latent inversion. He explained that:
"In a happy marriage, whatever husband or wife do, within reason, to express physical love and give pleasure to each other is normal. The term 'within reason' involves the mutual attitude of the husband or wife, toward certain preliminary lovemaking techniques....
"Deviations are allowable as long as they lead to normal intercourse. They are usually abnormal or neurotic when they are always practiced to the exclusion of the mating that nature intended.
"If the variation in lovemaking leads to completed satisfaction, it is better to accommodate your partner as long as the activity is acceptable to you. In fact, variations often help to restore or maintain the potency of the husband."
The famous psychoanalyst Dr. A.A. Brill, who discovered that departure from the normal played an active part in the "intimate lives of otherwise normal people" quite frequently, observed that:
"We call them perversions only when they absolutely dominate the picture, that is when they are fixed. Occasional indulgence in these acts does not stamp those practicing them as abnormal."
In a recent talk I had with Father George Hagmeier, a psychologist and priest who is Associate Director of the Paulist Institute for Religious Research, he expressed the opinion that in his own work he found that heterosexual anal-intercourse is fairly common among those who show no signs of sexual perversion or emotional instability otherwise.
And the renowned Sigmund Freud, who was himself a student of the famous Krafft-Ebing, was probably the first psychiatrist of major importance to state for the record that heterosexual anal-intercourse was both widely practiced and not necessarily connected with homosexual orientation.
"The playing of a sexual part by the mucous membrane of the anus," Freud wrote in his THREE ESSAYS ON THE THEORY OF SEXUALITY, "is by no means limited to intercourse between men: preference for it is in no way characteristic of inverted feeling. On the contrary, it seems that pedicatio with a male owes its origin to an analogy with a similar act performed with a woman...."
Here we see the strangely bi-sexual character that is sometimes associated with at least the practice of anal-intercourse. The male who is not an absolute homosexual may substitute the only portion of the male anatomy with a similar configuration and appearance to that of the female (the buttocks and anus), for a sex object. On the other hand, a male homosexual pederast may find the female buttocks of erotic interest on occasion because he can substitute it for that of the male.
There are other bi-sexual features present too, but they are not apparent or involved with everyone who practices heterosexual pederasty, anymore than the use of the hand or the mouth of a female love partner are indicative of sexual inversion. The sex of the partner desired is the only real determining factor in homosexuality or bisexuality, not the mode of sexual enjoyment utilized.
A male, for instance, may be interested in passive indulgence of anal-intercourse, yet not be homosexually oriented at all. His sex object may be female, and his passive enjoyment accomplished by her insertion of a finger deep into his rectum. He may have her use an object for penetration, or employ lingual insertion. So long as his desire is not for the penetration of his anus by a live male penis, there is no prima facie evidence that his passive interest is necessarily homosexual in nature.
Unfortunately, there are no reliable statistics available as to the actual prevalence of anal-intercourse between males and females. The Kinsey reports admitted its existence and gave some general information on instances of anal masturbation and analingus (two methods by which anal-erotic lesbians often satisfy each other), which may also be included as methods of anal intercourse. But they did not report on the frequency of these contacts by those polled and interviewed, stating simply:
"The anal area is erotically responsive in some individuals. In others it appears to have no erotic significance even though it may be highly sensitive to tactile stimulation. As many as half or more of the population may find some degree of erotic satisfaction in anal stimulation, but good incidence data are not available. There are some males and females who may be as aroused erotically by anal stimulation as they are by stimulation of the genitalia, or who may be more intensely aroused."
In the view of many physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists and lay students of human sexual behavior, the practice of heterosexual pederasty and other forms of anal-intercourse is far more widespread than most people realize. In my own research, for instance, I have never known of a heterosexually active male who has not participated in anal-intercourse with a female at least once. And I find it to be a popular indulgence of many erotically active females, perhaps as many as 50%. With a great number of women it has become a preferred practice and a means of achieving orgasm, often without any vulval or clitoral contact at all.
The permissive society of America in the 1960's may be responsible for a slight increase in this activity today. But it is doubtful there is any period in the history of mankind when it was not participated in both homosexually and heterosexually to quite some degree.
In addition to the many Biblical and pre Christian historical writings, which deal mainly with instances of homosexual sodomy, a careful review of some of the world's classic literature, erotic works of art and other preserved documentation, reveal mankind's interest in anal intercourse through the ages.
Vases and other artifacts uncovered in Asia, Africa, and from the Roman Empire days in Italy, depict females being sodomized by satyrs ' and other males, including both twosome and group activity, orgies and bi-sexual anal "daisy-. chains."
John Wilmot, the 2nd Earl of Rochester, a noted poet of his time (1647-1680) and close associate of Charles II, is credited with writing an entire play titled SODOM, that saw production in 1684. Using the most obscene and four-letter vocabularies availably at the time, the mythical inhabitants of this mythical kingdom of Sodom, tell how they plan to forego all women for the sake of the "higher glories" of homosexual buggery.
And while the play itself deals primarily with male sodomy as opposed to heterosexual coitus, Prosper Marchand in his DICTIONARY OF HISTORY, tells us that it was performed before a mixed audience including the dissolute Charles II himself. In the prologue to the play, the author implies that the prurient qualities of the performance might influence the audience to attempt heterosexual sodomy, in these words::
I do presume there are no women here, 'Tis too debauch'd for their fair sex I fear, Sure they will not in petticoats appear.
And yet I am informed here's many a lass Come for to ease the itching of her arse, Damned pocky jades, whose cunts are hot as fire, Before three acts are done of this our farce, They'll scrape acquaintance with a standing tarse, And impudently move it to their arse....
The ribald humor of Rochester's SODOM is blatantly injected into the names of the characters in the play. The Dramatis Personae lists:

As the play opens, Bolloxinium is explaining his problem to several male members of his court:
"I do no longer old stale cunts admire, "The drudgery has worn out my desire.

"My prick no more shall to bald cunts resort.
"Merkins (pubic wigs) rub off, and sometimes spoil the sport.
* * *
"As for the queen, her cunt no more invites, "Clad with the filth of all her nasty whites. "Borastus, you spend your time I know not how, The choice of buggery is wanting now. BORASTUS-
"I would advise you, Sire, to make a pass "Once more at Pockenello's Royal Arse; "Besides, Sire, Pine has such a gentle skin, " 'Twould tempt a Saint to thrust his pintle in. BOLLOXINIUM-
"Henceforth, Borastus, set the nation free, "Let conscience have its right and liberty:
"I do proclaim that bugg'ry may be used "Through all the land, so cunt be not abus'd
"That's the proviso.

"To Buggeranthos let this charge be given, "And let them bugger all things under heaven."
While SODOM ranks as a sex satire or spoof in the tradition of the ribald classic, it does show the interest that existed among royalty at the time in at least the idea or fantasy of anal-intercourse.
AN old English erotic classic that was patterned as a take-off on the Indian KAMA-SUTRA, came out under the title of THE BATTLES OF VENUS in 1760. It became so popular over the years, that the William Dugdale publishing house brought out several editions of the work on into the middle of the 19th Century.
After the usual subtle and not-so-subtle dissertations on regular coitus and oral intercourse, the book takes up anal-intercourse performed upon the female by either one or two men:
"The next in degree of pleasure to this mode (cunnilingus) is perhaps that of enjoying her in the rear.
"In this species it must be confessed that, besides the pleasure of novelty and variety, the breast and belly of the woman are not unenjoyed by the roving pressure of the man's hands; and moreover there are certainly two additional gratifications not know in the former instance, namely, the feeling of her plump, warm buttocks planted in his lap, and the pleasure of handling the delightful mount of Venus, at the same time that he is fixed in, and enjoying it behind."
The author then mentions the need for extra lubrication if the one female should be enjoyed by two men at the same time, one anally and the other vaginally. He describes the posture for this act thusly:
"The woman must lie straight, on either side, and the man who attacks her in front must, after entering her, lift her uppermost leg on his buttock. The antagonist in the rear must then accommodate himself to her posture, and glide in likewise.
"The men may knock her as hard as they will; so as the woman is careful to keep herself exactly straight, and not to withdraw from one or the other, their violent shocks will only serve to make her more fixed and steady."
THE anus of the female when used sodomitically was referred to as a "Bye-Way to Heaven" in a ribaldry anti-religious passage from C. Moran's THE FRUIT SHOP, an erotic classic first printed in London in 1765.
"A most happy expedient," this passage reads, was hit off by a vigorous monk, and confessor to a convent of nuns, to whom he preached that the shortest road to Heaven, and the bye-way thither for the elect, was to lower in the most humbling manner they could, that part of their body which was the most elevated. By this means certain plumpnesses (in vulgar phrase called posteriours) and most despised, would be raised to a deserved and conspicuous degree of eminence: in which situation they might be sure of receiving, anon, animating impressions, and missionary irradiation, if they were destined to figure among the elect.
"Natural curiosity as well as religious obedience, must have made any woman, mm, or other, pay proper regard to so interesting a tale (doctrine we mean) nay proceed without hesitation to the putting it in practice, and this gave rise to two whimsical terms, invented by error, to wit, attrition and contrition, both derivatives from the Latin verb terere to rub. Its compounds atterere, signifies to rub to: contrere to rub with. Attrition was done by the woman when lowering her head, the highest part of her body, she rubbed her nose to the ground. In this act of devotion she must be supported on her knees, to raise to a conspicuous view her background, whose situation in general is rather low, and held in contempt. By that position the fair penitent resembles somewhat those peculiarly shaped vessels, which mariners call, a low peak and a high stem.
"The second part of the ceremony, contrition borrowed from contrere, to rub with, and executed by the judiciously intriguing confessor, or conscience director, that by neither bearing too heavily upon, nor touching with his mortal hands, the discovery of such a fraud might be prevented. She the while was to keep her eyes piously closed, the veil drawn fast before them as yet not worthy of having a peep at heavenly things.-The operation proved too pleasurable not to be readily believed in, because flattering to her pride for the present, and hopes of hereafter; as well as on account of her exquisite sensation to her unknown, until the priestly office of installation; which by the implicit devotee was received as a super-natural gift, that she desired to repeatedly taste of, as often as the holy man should think her worthy of being honored with such mystical and enraptured visitations, which indeed was as frequently as he could comply with her request."
The passage closes with a short couplet in French reading:
"Nez a Terre,(Nose to the ground, "Cul en L'air Bottom in the air)
"That is the Bye-Way to Heaven, (vol. 2, p. 95) "
THE noted British poet and Libertine Lord Byron (1788-1824) is reputed to have left his wife, the beautiful heiress Anna Isabella, because of her reluctance to let him practice anal-intercourse upon her when she was pregnant and coitus was not permitted. In 1866, the W. Dugdale publishing house released an edition of DON LEON, a long poem attributed to the late Lord Byron in which he "is represented as describing his various pederastic amours, and excusing his antiphysical proclivity." The work, consisting of 1,455 lines, is entirely in defense of heterosexual sodomy.
Two of the pertinent passages from this classic poem are reproduced here:
"That time it was, as we in parlance wiled "Away the hours, my wife was big with child. "Her waist, which looked so taper when a maid
"Like some swol'n butt its bellying orb displayed, "And love, chagrined, beheld his favorite cell "From mounds opposing scarce accessible.

"'May soon Lucinda's dainty hand require " 'To make a nurse of thee, of me a sire.
"I burn to press thee, but I fear to try, " 'Lest like an incubus my weight should lie;
"'Lest from the close encounter we should doom
"'Thy quickening foetus to an early tomb.
"'Thy size repels me, whilst thy charms invite;
"'Then, say, how celebrate the marriage rite?

SOMEWHAT droll references to sodomy have even appeared in such serious 19th Century publications as medical and legal periodicals of the time. The NEW YORK MEDICAL JOURNAL for August 1867 quotes Dr. W.D. Buck, President of the New Hampshire State Medical Society, as follows:
"A distinguished surgeon in New York city 25 years ago said, when Dupuytren's operation for relaxation of the sphincter ani was in vogue, every young man who came from Paris found every other individual's anus too large, and proceeded to pucker it up. The result was the New York anuses looked like gimlet-holes in a piece of pork."
OF more political than literary interest is the reference to sodomy contained in the anti Western Chinese propaganda masterpiece of the 1800's, DEATH BLOW TO CORRUPT DOCTRINES. Using the familiar technique of the big-lie that the Red Chinese fabricate against "American Imperialism" today, this Shanghai publication of over a century ago (translated in 1870 by the Rev. C.W. Mateer of the American Presbyterian Mission in Shantung), claimed that:
"The vilest of all is the Greek sect, which is but a branch of the T'ien-chu (Catholic) religion, and is prevalent in Russia and England. When the children, whether male or female, are three months old, they insert a tube in the anus in order to enlarge it, so that afterwards it may be convenient for the practice of sodomy. They, however, take out this tube at night, which they call 'preserving the constitution.' "
There are literally hundreds of other historical and literary references to heterosexual sodomy, some of them written during the most puritanistic and conservative periods of history. Thus, it seems strange that in our current era of almost total sexual permissiveness that one hears so little about a practice that is so common.
In an age when sexual acts are so openly discussed and publicly displayed that the mood of the times is epitomized in a legitimate Broadway play titled THE BEARD, in which two lovers openly engage in an explicit act of oral intercourse on stage, why is heterosexual sodomy still such a seldom heard of subject?
It seems that Sigmund Freud may have had the answer 60 years ago when he wrote:
"Where the anus is concerned it becomes still clearer that it is disgust which stamps that sexual aim as a perversion. I hope, however, I shall not be accused of partisanship when I assert that people who try to account for this disgust by saying that the organ in question serves the function of excretion and comes in contact with excrement-a thing which is disgusting in itself-are not much more to the point than hysterical girls who account for their disgust at the male genital by saying that it serves to void urine."
Of course, in the more perverted forms of sodomy, the attraction to this method of intercourse is often heightened by the fact that the anus is the passageway for human elimination. Pederasty, like various modes of coitus, is not always a completely normal and adjunctive part of an overall sexual relationship between a male and a female.
It will be the purpose of this book to throw new light on both the normal and abnormal manifestations of the sexual instinct, to explain the physical and psychological motivations and drives behind these acts, and thus give both the professional and lay reader alike a clearer understanding of this form of erotic behavior so frequently encountered.
In the several detailed case histories used to illustrate the prevalence and modes of these practices, all names of real people and other identifying data have been changed in order to protect the privilege of privacy of those contributing to the vast amount of research demanded in the preparation of this current study.
CHAPTER TWO
THE PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF ANAL-EROTIC DESIRE AND NEED
"I'm a good wife, doctor," a meticulously neat, attractive and well-dressed 31-year-old housewife almost tearfully stated her problem to a psychologist. "Lord knows I try to keep a good house and be a good mother too ... But something was missing with our sex life. I wasn't getting what I wanted ... not even when my husband and I had relations three or four times a week.
"Last year, I met this man who runs the supermarket and ... well, we got too friendly once when my husband was out of town. Now, I can't let him go because ... he has intercourse in me rectally. I love it ... satisfied for the first time in my life, really ... There's something about the way it feels, even hurts, when he pushes his penis deep inside there. I wiggle and scream, and I act like a mad woman, doctor. Oh, God, I love the feel of it there...."
The patient who went on to describe these "wonderful" sensations of being sodomized was indeed an unusually neat and conscientious housekeeper. Her home was a model of orderliness and cleanliness, as was her own body. She bathed twice daily with a fresh change of clothes each time, and her children were the neatest and cleanest in the neighborhood.
And she was completely anal-erotic, a veritable 'slave of sodomy" to her extra-marital lover, who eagerly gave her the satisfaction her husband denied her.
It was Freud who first noted that the character traits of "obstinacy, thrift and orderliness" are often associated with anal eroticism. And as Caprio expressed it more recently in his Variations In Sexual Behavior:
"Psychoanalysts have discovered that neurotics of the so-called anal type often insist on extreme cleanliness and orderliness. Hence they are classified as belonging to the obsessive-compulsive group of neurotics. The explanation lies in the fact that they harbor conflicts between right and wrong resulting in strong unconscious feelings of guilt. The preoccupation with 'cleanliness' represents at attempt to over-compensate at the conscious level for unconscious desires and thoughts that would be regarded as 'dirty' or 'unclean.' "
But the average sexually active individual may have anal-erotic desires and engage occasionally in sodomy and other forms of heterosexual anal intercourse without being an obsessive-compulsive neurotic anal-erotic. In 1920, Freud rendered a less dogmatic opinion on anal response than he previously allowed himself, and it is one that is generally agreed upon today by probably a majority of professionals:
.. we must regard each individual as possessing an oral eroticism, an anal eroticism, a urethral eroticism, etc., and that the existence of mental complexes corresponding to these implies no judgment of abnormality or neurosis. The differences separating the normal from the abnormal can lie only in the relative strength of the individual components of the sexual instinct and the use to which they are put in the course of development."
Before belaboring the point of the relative normalcy of anal response to some degree in nearly all human beings, it would be a good idea to explore more fully the physical as well as the psychic origins of the ability to achieve erotic stimulation through contact with the anus, including rectal copulation or sodomy.
"The anus," according to the medically authoritative SEXUAL BEHAVIOR IN THE HUMAN FEMALE, "like the entrance to the vagina, is richly supplied with nerves, but the rectum, like the depths of the vagina, is a tube which is poorly supplied with sensory nerves. However, the receiving partner, male or female, often reports that the deep penetration of the rectum may bring satisfaction which is, in many respects, comparable to that which may be obtained from a deep vaginal insertion."
These quotes from the Kinsey reports are particularly interesting for objective study of the purely physical nature of anal responses in that they make no value judgments of the normalcy or abnormality of the response. The findings are based on anatomic and physiologic fact and behavioral practice. There is no concern with placing a tag of perversion on the practice. This job is left to the psychologist and psychiatrist.
While we may not fully understand the reasons for the ways in which nature works or constructs, for instance, we do know that the anus and rectum are amazingly similar in structure-configuration, musculature, nerves, etc., to the female vagina.
"The erotic sensitivity of the anal area," the Kinsey study continues, "depends in part upon the fact that there are abundant end organs of touch throughout the anal surfaces, and in part upon the fact that reactions of the muscles (the anal sphincters-Auth. note: compare with the vaginal sphincter) which normally keep the anus closed and may be erotically stimulating....
"The anus is particularly significant in sexual responses because the anal and genital areas share some muscles in common, and the activity of either area may bring the other area into action. Stimulation of the genitalia, both in the female and the male, may cause anal constrictions. Gynecologists frequently observe that stimulation of the clitoris or the area about the clitoris and the urethral meatus, may cause contractions of the anus (n.-an early reference to anal contractions during coitus is found in Aristotle-4th Century B.C.-Problems, Bk IV: 879b.), the hymenal ring, and the vaginal and perineal muscles. As rhythmic muscular movement develop during sexual responses, and particularly in the spasms that follow orgasm, the anal sphincter may rhythmically open and close. The incentives for anal insertions of various sorts and for anal intercourse lie partly in the significance of these rhythmic responses of the anal sphincters.
"Conversely, contractions of the anal sphincter, whether they be involuntary or initiated by erotic stimulation, may bring contractions of the muscles that extend into the genitalia and produce erection in the male or movement of the genital parts in the female. As a matter-of-fact, contractions of the anal sphincter appear to produce contractions of muscles in various remote parts of the body, including areas as far away as the throat and the nose. Anal contractions may cause the sides of the nose to flare, and the subject is inclined to inhale deeply-both of which are characteristic aspects of an individual who is responding sexually. When the clinician has difficulty in bringing a patent out of anesthesia, he may start deep breathing by inserting a gloved finger into the anus of the patient."
From the foregoing it appears patently obvious that almost any human being is physically capable of deep erotic response to anal stimulation, including sodomy. We might even assume that some kind of mental block or psychologically inspired taboo is the only reason why everyone does not participate in anal-erotic activity as a natural variation of both masturbatory and interpersonal sexual relations. As a matter-of-fact, there seem to be more physical reasons for anal-erotic activity than there are for oral erotic activity, the latter being discussed and read about to some degree by nearly everyone in our present enlightened society.
Psychologically speaking, however, there are firm foundations for both the fact of anal-erotic response and the possibility that it may be connected with a perversion of the sexual instinct and other neuroses. This is not to contradict the previous observation that anal eroticism may be a completely normal condition when it is not an obsessive-compulsive neurotic preference. But the very psychogenesis of anal-erotic response lends to it a particularly precarious character.
It is frequently difficult for even the professional expert to judge where the fine line may be drawn between natural anal-erotic response, and the often attendant degrees of perversion that may be associated with it. Depending upon the attitudes and moral outlook of the individual concerned, the desire for sodomy, either passively or actively, may contain fairly strong elements of sadism, masochism, ozolagnia (erotic response to foul odors), coprophagy (the eating of excrement as sexual stimulant), and other forms of scatology (sexual interest in excrement).
A very limited degree of sadistic pleasure is nearly always achieved by the active partner in a sex act, while the passive participant receives at least a minutiae of masochistic stimulation. The very position of the most normal heterosexual coitus, with the male on top, is a demonstration of a natural ratio of sadomasochism that is apparent in most of us. When a married couple sometimes reverse these roles occasionally, this merely reveals that there are both polarities present to some degree in the most emotionally stable and normal of individuals.
The same can be true in an instance of anal intercourse observed as a sometime variation in marital relations. If the husband and wife are agreeable to experimentation during a session of lovemaking, the man may position the wife genupectorally (knee-chest) and probe the anus intently, titillating the nerve endings about the sphincter ani.
Ease of entrance may be aided by spreading .he vaginal secretion about the anal opening, the use of saliva, or an artificial lubricant such as Vaseline or K-Y jelly. Following this digital probe, so long as the wife finds the experience pleasurable and inoffensive, the husband may place his erect member at the anal entrance and push the head of the penis inside, being careful not to go beyond the threshold of pleasure to where an element of unpleasant pain is present.
So long as both parties find occasional enjoyment in this, there is nothing necessarily abnormal if the process is carried on until further ingress is facilitated and copulative movements carried out. It is only when the other elements of perversion are present, or become cultivated, that an infrequent and pleasurable act of anal intercourse or sodomy between such heterosexual love partners as a man and wife, becomes a decided aberration.
"Many women patients who are referred for psychiatric treatment because of a conversion neurosis," Caprio explains in VARIATIONS IN SEXUAL BEHAVIOR, "complain that they are subjected to rectal intercourse. One such patient reported that her husband preferred sodomy to coitus. Part of his gratification was derived from the pleasure of causing his wife pain (anal sadism). She stated that she had to bite the pillow in order to endure the acute discomfort she experienced during the insertion of the husband's penis into her rectum. Analysis of the husband disclosed a pronounced sadistic component which was traced to sexual excitement during childhood ..
As with so many of the perversions of the sexual instinct, the sadomasochistic-anal combination is often a result of arrested sexual development, a return to or retention at an infantile stage of sexuality. A pronounced mania for oral-intercourse most often results from imperfect maturation from infantile sexual interests, which include almost all portions of the body at one time (polymorphous perverse) to adult-genital sexuality. And much the same is true of those with an abnormal and neurotic need for either the active or passive role in heterosexual, or homosexual, pederasty.
The normal psychosexual and somatic development of human eroticism passes first through the oral or sucking stage of the infant to the anal stake (occurring at the time of early bowel training), and eventually to the genital phase. If progression is stopped or interfered with at any point along this line, the result may be a fixation at the oral, anal, or polymorphous perverse stage, just as psychic trauma may fixate abnormal desire in later years before sex activity has become routine and orientation firmly established.
"A second pre genital phase," Freud stated in his 1905 studies, "is that of the sadistic-anal-organization. Here the opposition between two currents, which run through all sexual life, is already developed: they cannot yet, however, be described as 'masculine' and 'feminine,' but only as 'active' and 'passive.' The activity is put into operation by the instinct for mastery through the agency of somatic musculature; the organ which, more than any other, represents the passive sexual aim is the erotogenic mucous membrane of the anus.
"Alongside these, other component instincts operate in an autoerotic manner. In this phase, therefore, sexual polarity and an extraneous object are already observable. But organization and subordination to the productive function are still absent."
The fact of universal anal sensitivity is betrayed in the oft-heard remark, particularly by males, that, "There's nothing like a good crap." While the expression may be considered vulgar, the psychological revelation it contains makes it worth repeating here. The motivation for this remark, goes back to infancy.
Intestinal disturbances in infants are quite common, and there can be little doubt that humans experience both the pleasure of defecation (as the fecal mass passes through the sensate anus) as well as the pain that is sometime present in cases of diarrhea or the expulsion of particularly thick stools. This pleasure-pain combination is often not so easy to forget. The condition may continue through the psychosexual development or it may flashback later through a touching of the anus or other rectal contact.
Some anal-erotic individuals have traced their condition back to frequent enemas in childhood (or have the response revived through enemas in adult life), while others are cursed with a form of psychosomatic constipation in adulthood that is brought about by a desire for continued excuse to take enemas.
And again, the original displeasure at being subjected to such treatment as a child, and the discomfort of insertion, has combined with the sensate pleasures of the experience. The same pattern may also be true for those who are psychosomatically constipated and take frequent laxatives and purgatives to "expel" the product forcefully through the anus. The sadistic-anal organization seems ever present.
The pleasure-pain reaction comes into play once more when the young child learns that he can evoke parental displeasure by holding back his bowel movement, by not "producing" for them. Thus the retention of the feces becomes a way in which he first learns to rebel against authority. And finally, when he does decide to "let go" he brings on a pleasant response from his parents as well as enjoyable sensations at his anal opening.
There is also symbolic reference in the shape of the stool, which Freud describes as "the forerunners of another organ, which is destined to come into action after the phase of childhood." The image may stick with the child as something he would like to experience (the penis) entering his rectum also, or as an experience he would like to impart to someone else to invoke the same pleasure and/or pain that he knows.
And while most of these observations were made originally by Freud in the last century, no better evidence of their accuracy holds forth today than a recent study I conducted of sex practices among the hippie element of our current generation. A majority of these people, it seems, engage in a disproportionate amount of anal-intercourse, both homosexual and hetero sexual.
"We like to sandwich-fuck," a 25-year old female hippie told me during the course of a recent interview, "That's a threesome, and I get on the bottom while Donny takes me missionary style and Pete sticks it in his rear. One-two-three, and a-way we go, and it's really great. I like Donny to stick his finger up my bottom too...."
This breed of rebellious young people, like the infant who holds back his bowel movement as a means to resist authority, are dedicated to withholding themselves from the mainstream of life that they feel is controlled by "the establishment," i.e., authority. This authority was first encountered by the child from his parents, the first symbols of discipline and rule. Thus the hippie, in effect, is rebelling against his parents.
In dress, mannerisms and sexual behavior, polarity of orientation is often more neutral or bi-sexual for the hippie, rather than clearly homosexual or heterosexual. Their behavioral manifestations are infantile sexually as well as socially.
The phenomena of the "attractiveness of evil" or the erotic appeal of that which is "dirty" plays a part in the neurotic degree to which anal interest is manifested in many people and, quite obviously, represents a form of masochism.
"Pederasty also holds an attraction for some men," Caprio tells us, "because the rectum is associated with that which is 'unclean'-thus the greater the taboo, the greater the eroticism....Some women enjoy being subjected to sodomistic practices because of their strong masochistic component."
And in speaking of neurotic motivations to anal eroticism, Freud was of the opinion that, ". ... the whole significance of the anal zone is reflected in the fact that few neurotics are to be found without their special scatalogical practices, ceremonies, and so on, which they carefully keep secret."
In the formative stages of infancy and childhood it not uncommon to find a baby happily playing with the product of his own defecation. Any punishment or disapproval on the part of the parents or guardians may well be a determining factor as to the abnormal influence this matter can have in later life.
In instances where the child utilizes his power to retain feces at will and eliminate at will, to evoke parental displeasure or pleasure, the act of defecation becomes also an act of anal masturbation. This is often manifested among older children by substituting the finger in the rectum to create similar sensations. And from there, it is only one step farther to the desire for the practice of sodomy or some other form of anal intercourse.
While the roots of anal desire may be neurotic, the overall stability of one able to enjoy anal-intercourse need not be so hampered that he is classified as mentally disturbed or ill, or even abnormally neurotic. All of us are neurotic to some degree. The game of life and the very differences that make one man like golf and another bridge or one woman prefer a big man while another wants a slim one for a husband or sex partner, are often of neurotic origin.
The same can be true in the choice of occasional variations in sexual behavior, including performances of anal intercourse. Yet the thin line between normalcy and abnormality is not an easy one to draw.
It would be obvious, for instance, that a man who was fully satisfied only by performing pederasty upon his female love partner in a manner most painful for her, is an active pederast to an abnormal degree. And it would be equally clear that a man and wife who enjoy occasional pedication as an infrequent variation of their lovemaking, are not necessarily perverted or aberrational.
But what of the many cases that fall somewhere in between these clear-cut examples of anal-erotic activity? What of the coprophagic male who enjoys licking and tonguing the anus of is inamorata, not as a natural aid to pederasty, but for the pleasure of ingesting fecal matter? And what of the autoerotic analist who uses artificial devices in the rectum for masturbation? The female whose zenith of pleasure comes from the sheer pain of having her anus and rectum tortured beyond endurance?
In the following chapters I shall present several case histories and behavioral studies, many from my own private files, as well as more professional data and opinion, that will illustrate in vivid detail the various degrees of anal-erotic response, both normal and abnormal.
CHAPTER THREE
IN MODERN MARRIAGE
One of the more noticeable changes that has taken place during the current sexual revolution is the erotic aggressiveness of females, both single and married. It seems like only a few years ago that it was always the husband who had a problem in making his wife receptive to the frequency and scope of his sexual advances. Today,, psychologists and psychiatrists the country over are seeing more and more frustrated housewives who complain that their husbands are not satisfying them.
We see evidence of this trend too in the practice of anal intercourse among married couples. It is very often the wife who, overtly or subtly, initiates the act of anal-intercourse upon the marriage bed.
"We'd always done it with him at the rear sometimes," an outspoken Maryland mother of two told me recently, "So one time when he was in one of his real virile moods, I just reached back and took hold of his penis and led it in the other way. With a little practice ... wow! We really found out what we'd been missing."
More often than not these days, it is the frantic husband who seeks professional guidance concerning his wife's "abnormal" desires. The exact reverse of the situation twenty years ago when marriage counselors were besieged by repressed and panic stricken wives calling their husbands "perverts" because they desired oral relations, I can recall almost the exact words of one highly disturbed young man in his twenties who came to me for advice not more than two months ago.
"I have married a sex monster, doctor!" the young salesman explained his feelings, emphasizing each word with dramatic clarity and unusual emphasis. "She wants me to do it in her rectum. My wife! My darling wife, who comes from the finest family, who was a virgin when we married, who goes to church every Sunday ... she wants me to stick my penis up her butt. She has gone mad, doctor! I ask her where she got the idea ... says she does not know, but wants to feel me in her backside ... filthy, dirty ... awful...."
When I asked this man if his wife had ever pressed at his anus with her finger while they were copulating, he seemed astonished, but finally admitted that she had, and he had found it pleasurable. After a talk with both of them, I was convinced that the wife's desire was not of an abnormal degree or quality. Once they could both communicate about it with each other in the light of new knowledge, they were able to work out the problem by themselves.
It is not unusual to find couples who have inserted fingers in each others' anus during love play and coitus and even who have performed mild acts of analingus, yet still consider sodomy between themselves as the basest of perversions.
"That's what the queers do!" one man exploded when the idea was brought up, and I am sure that this homosexual view of pederasty is reflected in the attitude of so many males on this subject. More so than any real or psychic fear of the "unclean" aspects of the act, is the association by males of sodomy with homosexuality.
As for those married couples who do engage in anal-intercourse with relative freedom from fear and worry, so very many still offer a multitude of excuses and reasons for their conduct, rather than admitting that it is simply a pleasurable erotic variation for them.
Before the day of the "pill," the most frequently heard story was that anal-intercourse was very similar to coitus in the position of venus aversa, and there was no danger of pregnancy. Men sometimes alluded to the tightness of anal incursion as being stimulating, but most felt so certain that their wives did not enjoy it along with them that they felt guilty about it.
Many couples whose religion forbids the use of contraceptives have been known to resort to anal-intercourse under the impression that it is less of a sin for them than the use of a rubber, diaphragm, suppository, etc. However, a leading Catholic theologian who is an expert on marital and sexual problems, informed me that this is absolutely not so.
"Your control couples were lower middleclass," he remarked after I told him of my research and the socio-economic level in which the subjects fell "Yes, I can see where there might be a problem of understanding there. But in the case of a well catechized Catholic, there would be a better understanding. You see, any end-purpose intercourse that does not result in the possible joining of the sperm with the egg, is considered a sin. Why don't they use a contraceptive? They might as well."
Still, many couples persist in the belief that they are utilizing anal-intercourse for any number of reasons other than a logical form of sexual enjoyment. And even those who do admit that it is a very pleasurable form of sexual expression will insist that they only were able to enjoy it after they "got used to it." And, of course, this is undoubtedly true to some extent, as there is both a physical "breaking-in" period, as well as a time of mental adjustment to get over the taboos that society has placed upon the practice.
While no actual statistics are available as to the prevalence and frequency of anal-intercourse among married couples, one might easily assume that well over half have gone at least as far as digital anal stimulation or beyond. As to actual sodomy, the figure would be considerably less. Yet if it were not for generally unfounded inhibitions along these lines, it would be a far more widespread activity among married people than among any other group of sexually active individuals, because it is only in marriage that most people are given the opportunity to completely explore the entire spectrum of interpersonal sexual desires.
I have also noticed that married couples seem far more reluctant to talk about their anal relations than single people with frequent sexual experiences. The only exception are the 'swingers," the wife swappers, who are, of course, more promiscuous than unmarried individuals with a high degree of varied erotic experience.
BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW (1):
SODOMY AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR COITUS IN PREVENTION OF IMPREGNATION
"Our religion forbids us to use contraceptives, so my wife and I began trying it this way 12 years ago. I was on her from behind one night, and I put my finger in the other hole and one thing led to another. Now, we have anal intercourse when she has her periods too ... in fact all the time except the real 'safe' days when we know she can't get pregnant. We like it too. She can come good that way, specially if I play with her around front with my finger...."
The man quoted here was not a patient, but rather a social acquaintance who volunteered the information upon discovering that I was doing this research project on heterosexual sodomy. I knew this 38-year-old engineer to be a well-adjusted husband and family man, so I asked if I might interview both him and his wife on the subject, promising absolute anonymity, of course.
A week later, I sat down with Frank and Joyce in the cozy den of their brick rambler located in the middle-class suburbs of a large Eastern metropolis. They did not want me to use a tape recorder, so I have reconstructed the discussion from notes and memory:
DR.-Frank has told me generally how you discovered the potential of anal-intercourse, Joyce. Would you like to tell me about it from your point of view?
JOYCE-Well, I hope I'm relaxed and uninhibited enough to talk openly about it. You know, we've never in our whole lives ... at least not me ... I've never talked about this to anyone, not even my closest girlfriend.
FRANK-Easy Joyce ... take it easy. You don't mind the gynecologist probing your private parts. Think of it in that way ... a clinical probe of our sex life. This can be important to a lot of people.
JOYCE-Well ... I like it. Yes, I mean I really like to be ... well, I like anal-intercourse. We used to play a little game when we made love ... oh, ten or twelve years ago. When we were together and doing it, with Frank on top, I would reach around and put my finger in his rectum just about the time of the climax. Don't ask me why I did it. It just seemed ... sexy! He seemed to like it, and I guess that's why he started returning the favor when he was doing it ... dog fashion.
FRANK-Exactly. I knew I got a kick out of it, so I would insert my finger ... insert? I put it all the way in her rectum, and I know the reaction I got told me she loved it.
JOYCE-Oh, yes! I never said a word about it. We never talked about it. I kept hoping in my own mind that someday he would try to put his penis in me there too.
FRANK-That first time was a fiasco. We were babes in the woods, floundering in the darkness. I was in the middle of doing it from behind when the urge hit me. I can remember that like it was yesterday, see. I pulled it all the way out ... and I had my hand on the cheeks of her buttocks. I pulled them apart, and her anus ... it was right there inviting me to do this ... the irresistible urge. So, I aimed and pushed with all my might.
JOYCE-Typical man. It just about killed me!
FRANK-I guess about an inch of it went in. It was the tightest thing I ever felt in my life. I thought I was trapped.
DR.-Was the pain so great, Joyce, that you never wanted him to do it again ... at that moment, I mean?
JOYCE-No ... oh, no! When he quit trying to push, I had the most ... a very unusual feeling. I could feel myself tingling there. No, I just plain told him to go get the petroleum jelly before he tried that again.
DR.-Did you try it again that night?
FRANK-No. I was a little upset about her reaction, and we weren't as communicative then. I suppose if it hadn't been for Joyce's subtle hints I never would have tried it again.
DR.-Subtle hints?
JOYCE-Well, the next time I figured we would be making love, I put the jar of petroleum jelly on the night table right by the bed. Frank remembered my remark and asked me if that's why I'd put it there. I didn't say anything. I only nodded my head.
FRANK-I think we had been married six years then. Sex was still good, but it had become a little routine This was as good as having an extra-marital fling. I was about as excited as I was on our wedding night.
DR.-And you, Joyce?
JOYCE-Oh, I was more excited! I was scared on our wedding night. This time I was relaxed and excited ... definitely.
DR.-Exactly, how did you go about it at the beginning?
FRANK-Joyce got into position on her own. I put some of the jelly on my finger and worked it in her anus I was too excited then. I discovered I'd lost my erection, and we had a kind of a laugh about that. It broke the tension. She played with my penis, and I sucked her breasts ... It didn't take long to get it up again.
I spread jelly on it, rubbed it all over, and then I worked the head of it in her anus very slowly. I watched her muscles tense, then relax. I tried to interpret her exclamations to know if I was hurting her, or if she liked it.
JOYCE-I liked it. The pleasure-pain you were talking about earlier definitely was there. I think I was also a little afraid of his putting it in further ... although I wanted it in me.
DR.-What was the extent of your activity that time?
FRANK-I worked very, very slowly ... only about an inch or two of penetration. Joyce was moving around so much and acting like she was real passionate, I wanted to go in further. It was such a tight fit it was hurting me too a little bit.
DR.-What was all this screaming about, Joyce, pleasure or pain?
JOYCE-Both. Oh, damn, I'll never forget that time. I was going wild! It hurt so good ... yes, that's how I felt, and I'm certainly not masochist. It hurt, but I didn't want him to stop.
FRANK-I remember saying, "Joyce, I'm going to come! I can't hold it!" and I reached down beneath her belly and got my fingers on her privates. I wanted her to come too.
DR.-Did she?
JOYCE-No ... not that time. I wanted to. I was in the mood, you know, to build right up to it and have my orgasm.
FRANK-It was a reference point for us the next time. There was no problem then. I began to finger her as soon as we started, and I got it in a lot farther too ... three inches or more.
DR.-What was your reaction, Joyce?
JOYCE-Beautiful. Oh, I can't describe it. If I say it was the most beautiful ... the strongest climax I'd ever had, you'll think I'm sick. In a way it was just that. I was an innocent virgin when we married, you see, and it took a while to get used to sex, to where I could climax. When it did happen, it had been so gradually built up to, there was no explosion and stars, and all those wild things that are supposed to happen. Well, this time, I was no little innocent virgin, so I was ready for the stars and, boy, they were exploding all over.
DR.-Was the actual orgasm more from being titillated by Frank's fingers, or from the sensations at the anus?
JOYCE-I ... I don't really know. Is it possible to have a climax ... just from anal-intercourse?
DR.-Yes, very much so with some women. FRANK-Well, that's something we'll have to try. We never thought of that. I've always used my finger right on her clitoris when we did it, and sometimes Joyce ... well, maybe she'd rather I didn't say it....
JOYCE-I'm relaxed now, dear. No inhibitions.
FRANK-It gets a little wild sometimes, so if we're moving around a lot, she rubs herself there.
JOYCE-Yes! I have climaxed like you said. I remember one time we were moving around all over the place and neither one of us could keep a finger on me. I had a climax then. Yes! It ... it wasn't much different than other times. I suppose the real sexiness of it is largely psychological anyway.
DR.-Not entirely. There has to be a certain physical sensitivity in the anus, which apparently you have. The muscles in the anus may work in conjunction with the vaginal muscles and bring about orgasm. In a woman, there is no ejaculation, of course, so it is much more difficult to measure. Only you know really that you have an orgasm.
JOYCE-Oh, I sure have them with anal-intercourse. No doubt about that.
DR.-How long was it before you achieved full penetration ... before pederasty became as routine as coitus?
FRANK-I don't think it's ever become as routine as coitus, although we do this more than normal intercourse sometimes. I never go in all the way, either. I never have. I have this tendency to hold back because I know if I just ram it way in, Joyce says it hurts too much when it hits something up there.
JOYCE-Well ... I guess that shows I'm not a masochist, doctor. There is a point beyond which I don't want him to go. Sometimes, I can take it more comfortably than others. I don't know why.
DR.-This, of course, is a rather delicate discussion to begin with, so I might as well suggest that the time of your previous bowel movement might have some effect on how comfortable this is.
JOYCE-Well ... I've never even thought about it. We have no special time for lovemaking.
FRANK-It's usually in the evening, Joyce. You go to the bathroom after breakfast, don't you?
JOYCE-Yes.
DR.-I'm not a medical doctor, of course, but I would say that this may have some effect on the comfort, or lack of comfort involved. Perhaps when you have a full feeling, this is the reason. But anyway, you mentioned that you sometimes have anal-intercourse as frequently as regular coitus. Why is this, because of your religion?
FRANK-Very definitely. See, we like to have sex twice a week at least. If you figure out that one week Joyce's having a period, and then one or two other weeks you can't be sure of it being a 'safe' time, that explains it.
DR.-I want you to both be perfectly honest with me and answer with a simple 'yes' or 'no' as soon as I ask the question. Do you get more sexual pleasure, stronger sexual pleasure, from anal intercourse than from coitus?
FRANK-No.
JOYCE-Yes.
DR.-All right, now tell me the reason for your answer. Frank?
FRANK-I feel this way about it, doctor. Anal-intercourse is a strongly sexual thing and I have very forceful orgasms ... true. But it's only a variety, a substitute for the real thing. I get more pure physical and mental pleasure, if I can be blunt, out of throwing my penis right in the vagina and feeling her legs come up around me or go on the air. I don't think there's anything better than that. But ... anal-intercourse runs a close second, and that's always available.
DR.-And why did you answer oppositely, Joyce?
JOYCE-Maybe I was wrong. I feel so very much the same as Frank. I was thinking mainly about the force, the strength of my climaxes when I have ... when I get so much attention in both places. I kind of lose myself in it. But I do ... I do honestly look forward more to that week or two we can feel free to do it ... the old fashioned way.
DR.-Does oral intercourse play a part in your lovemaking?
FRANK-Only as a starter. We sometimes kiss each others' bodies and end up at the privates. We don't dwell on it.
DR.-Never to orgasm?
JOYCE-That is something that I would find unpleasant, I'm sure.
DR.-Our emphasis here had been on anal-intercourse from one direction. How about you, Frank, do you receive any anal attention from your wife?
FRANK-The finger. We've heard about using other things, but quite frankly, I'm not too wild about trying them out.
DR.-Have you ever come to orgasm while your wife used her finger?
FRANK-Not just with the use of her finger.
JOYCE-But almost.
FRANK-We ... well, over half the time when we have regular intercourse, I like for Joyce to get her finger in as far as she can. That can be awkward sometimes. I wish it was easier. I would really enjoy her moving her finger in and out of my anus. Now, what she was referring to there is this thing where I get in the same position she would for anal-intercourse, and we make a whole act out of it. This, we don't do too often. She can get two fingers all the way in if we use the jelly. She moves then in and out like she was ... like it was coiting, you know, and she takes my penis in the other hand and masturbates me onto a towel or newspaper. It doesn't take much doing ... the masturbating, I mean.
JOYCE-That's why I said 'almost.' Sometimes, I just rub his penis underneath and he ejaculates. He gets so very erect and it moves ... throbs ... just from my fingers in his rectum.
DR.-I gather that you both have very strong feelings about infidelity, wife-swapping, that sort of thing?
FRANK-Very definitely.
JOY CE-Absolutely.
DR.-Do you think then that this form of variation has helped to keep you together as man and wife?
JOYCE-that and the children, yes, I think this has given a new dimension to our sex relations. After all, we've been married over 18 years, and from everything I've read and heard, we have a far more active sex life than most people.
FRANK-I'll go a lot farther than that. I think if we hadn't discovered this, if Joyce hadn't been so willing to experiment, that I would have been unfaithful a long time ago ... as far as sex goes.
JOYCE-Well, I can go that far too, dear ... almost that far. I don't know precisely what I would have done, but I have just as big an appetite for sex as you do. I'd have been awfully frustrated and cranky, I can tell you that, if we'd had to wait for that 'safe' time each month.
COMMENT: It is all too infrequently that today's busy psychiatrist or psychologist has a chance to discuss these things with people like Frank and Joyce, who are so average, normal, and have no emotional problems that have resulted in their seeking professional help. Usually, it is only the very disturbed and neurotic whom the consultant sees and talks with.
Although this couple may be deluding themselves about the "morality" of their acts, at least so far as their religion is concerned, I fail to see any indication of what I would call abnormality. While the frequency of their anal relations in ratio to coitus is somewhat extreme, both partners agree that coitus is actually the more desirable of the two forms of intercourse.
Both Frank and Joyce are highly anal-erotic, to be sure, particularly Joyce. Yet neither is promiscuous. The variations they enjoy are all indulged within the framework of a stable and happy marriage. There seems to be no trend toward excesses, no pattern of escalating variations or abnormalities.
BEHAVIORAL STUDY(2):
HETEROSEXUAL ANAL-INTERCOURSE AMONG "SWINGING" MARRIEDS
"I lay flat, flat on my back, and he ate me, while I ate him, while Jack was screwing him in the ass. You call that perfection, I'll tell you. There's more anal stuff going on at swinging parties than you could imagine...."
The woman quoted above is an attractive 39-year-old mother of six-four girls and two boys. Both she and her husband are college graduates. Their oldest son is an honor student with a scholarship to a major university. The husband is part-owner and manager of a thriving electronics business. They show no outward signs of neurosis or instability to the non-swinging business, social and civic contacts whom they see and deal with daily.
Yet Shirley and her husband are "hard-core" swingers, orgiasts of the most depraved type. Some of her comments, which I believe to be absolutely true from what I know of this couple and their 'swing" companions, are quite revealing and interesting, and certainly pertinent to this current research:
"Me, I always tell a person who's foolish enough to ask....I like EVERYTHING! Not the sado stuff ... no, no. I mean SEX! I like to be screwed, sucked, screwed in the ass, worked on with a vibrator, gang-screwed by as many as can climb on. I like girls too, but I have to like a girl special to eat her. But I'd let anybody eat me or go up my ass.
"Yes, I can come when I'm getting it in the back door. You bet I can. Only I don't have a hang-up on this. I don't have any hang-ups. I like it all...."
"We have our sessions in the basement rec room-beds lashed together for group-orgies, vibrators, dildos, movies, slides. When we have a party, we have a ball....
"The new battery-op vibrators with the rectal unit are the thing now. The unit is curved to fit way up inside and go past the curve in the rectum to the sigmoid flexure. I never use it when I'm alone ... not like I do the attachment with the rubber teeth on my clit ... only at parties. It's hard to work it up there by yourself, or I guess I would.
"What I really get a charge out of doing at a party is to grease up a guy's rear ... one who's never had the bit before ... and get the unit all the way in him. It's a job sometimes. They squirm and yell and raise all kinds of hell. The trick is that when you do get it all the way up, you get the guy to relax. He doesn't quite realize it's up there. Then zowie! You turn on that vibrator and he's lost in space.
"I did that once to a guy ... actually Jack turned on the vibrator while I was eating him. He lasted all of two seconds before he came. That used to bug me before I learned to swallow it. Now ... if the penis is in far enough, I'd rather swallow than gag on it trying to hold it and wait until I can spit it out....
"This big government executive likes to get in my ass more than anything else. He's an exhibitionist ... more than I am. He makes a big thing about greasing it up, and he says things like-
"O-o-h! Look at the sweet little asshole puckered up for my prick." He sticks his finger in and goes around like a Roto-Rooter machine. He pulls it out and shoves his penis in right up to his balls. I don't care. I like everything.
"I'm coming in two seconds, but that's no big thing. Like I always say, whenever we have a ball, I start coming when the first couple arrives, and I don't stop until the last one leaves. If you want statistics, well ... maybe half of the women at a party will take it up the ass ... and love it. Most of the men like SOMETHING up their ass as part of the ball. A few ... maybe up to a fourth or more, now that I think of it, will get a kick out of another man putting it up there. That's at a ball, you understand, a part of the whole bit. They're not queer. They only like it with ... along with everything else...."
COMMENT: There is one school of analytical theory that would immediately put the tag of homosexual on any male who would allow himself to be sodomized by another male, regardless of the circumstances. The leader of this dogmatic appraisal was the late Dr. Edmund Bergler, who proclaimed that:
"The so-called bisexuals are in reality homosexuals with a light admixture of potency with unloved women. Nobody can dance at two weddings at the same time, not even the wizard of a homosexual."
Most professional ideology today would seem to disagree with this hypothesis. It is generally recognized, for instance, that a majority of people may have a slight homosexual component to their personality. While the average person may seldom if ever express this side of himself in a sexual act, the uninhibited atmosphere in which the 'swinger" participates gives him a special amount of temptation and opportunity.
Some may perform acts of homosexual sodomy at a party, and use the overall heterosexual and/or bi-sexual surroundings as an excuse to hide very strong inverted orientation. With others who participate, the acts may be largely experimental or tend to serve only a small side of the personality that is of a homosexual nature.
I would not attempt to classify these participants only on the basis of the acts performed at these 20th Century orgies. The motivational roots can be different in each case. What is far more obvious from these observations is the strong response shown at 'swinging" sessions to anal-intercourse and other anal-erotic acts.
Wife-swapping has evolved over the past few years from the fairly discreet "key-exchange" operation where the newly matched duos went their separate ways in twosomes, to the group orgy where anything goes. Things which were taught or assimilated as taboo behavior are overemphasized and over employed.
The infants and juveniles who stuff themselves with ice-cream or candy because of the very fact they have been told it is bad for them, the 'swinging" society gorges itself on "forbidden" sensual behavior. And because of the multiplicity of taboos, both physical and psychological, that have been placed on anal-intercourse, this is one of the last modes of sexual behavior to be explored.
Since most wife-swappers and 'swingers" are people of strong sexual desire and largely neurotic to some degree, like the hippie who rebels against the social structure, they have the nature psychological and physical background for anal sensitivity of an erotic nature.
Although this group represents only a very small percentage of modem marrieds, their behavior may indicate that their desires are not greatly different from possibly a majority of married couples today, except in degree. Most of us are mature enough to generally conform to the more logical demands of our culture and suffer no real problems as a consequence.
We all have occasional desires which are antisocial, illegal, immoral and abnormal. But because we are adult human beings, and not animals or infants, we are able to control these desires and live a relatively normal life.
CHAPTER FOUR
ANAL-EROTICISM IN THE FEMALE
The female is probably a subject for passive sodomy far more than the male. Reliable estimates indicate that no more than ten percent of the male population is actively homosexual, and not all of these indulge anal-intercourse. A great number of male homosexuals limit their erotic activities to masturbation, femoral (thigh) and oral intercourse.
Generally for those who have realized their anal-erotic potential, the female is much more likely to be psychologically attuned to passive pederasty than the male. The passive role in any heterosexual act of love falls more naturally to the female. Most performances of regular coitus are characterized by the female in the position of succubus, the male in the position of incubus, the active posture.
When we superimpose the extremes of sadomasochism upon the normal active and passive personalities of heterosexual lovers, the result is that the male shows up as slightly sadistic in his normal role, while the female's part is masochistic to a slight degree. In view of this, when combined with the natural physical potential of the anus, it is easy to see that no small proportion of females are subjected to and Capable of enjoying full penetration of the anus accompanied by copulative movements therein of the male organ.
Any complete study therefore of pederasty and sodomy, instead of being devoted almost solely to male homosexual practices (which most are), should more correctly contain a ratio of material about 10 to 1 favoring heterosexual anal-intercourse. While heterosexuals do not employ anal-gratification as frequently as a large number of the male homosexual population, far more people are involved. And it is the female whose anus is more commonly the object of sexual attention.
Many authorities are of the firm belief that heterosexual anal-intercourse would be a universal practice if it were not for psychologically imposed inhibitions. Yet it is the repressive quality of these inhibitions (taboos) that creates frequently an overemphasis and interest in anal intercourse that is all out of proportion to natural interest.
Again, it is most often the female who becomes emotionally involved in this neurotic anal eroticism. However, the sadistic appeal often attracts the male to unnecessary degrees of "masterful-desire." The result of this is that he becomes addicted to active pedicatio mulierum, a subject to be studied in the next chapter.
While the female interest is almost always passive there are, of course, many women with sadistic traits in this regard. They most often enjoy inserting their fingers or other phallic configured objects in the love partner's anus and performing violent agitation. Lesbian lovers often compensate each other in this manner when there are strong degrees of anal eroticism present. They are also quite frequently fond of giving or receiving analingus.
Among male-female anal eroticists, analingus is probably performed more upon the male partner by his female mate, than the other way around. The explanation for this is rather obvious when one considers the normally passive role of the female. For while we tend to think of the person penetrating as being in the active role, when the performance requires oral contact with the genital or anal parts of the body, the penetrative act (analingus or cunnilingus) takes on a humiliating masochistic or passive quality.
A female, for instance, who enjoys the receptor role in pederasty often tries to compensate. She feels that if she enjoys anal response her lover will also. Having no penis with which to bring him this pleasure, and wanting to humble herself more than digital incursion provides, she logically finds that analingus upon her male partner is capable of bringing a degree of sex pleasure to both.
The female anal eroticist transfers her own pleasure in fantasy quite frequently, and she thereby develops a fascination for the anus of any love partner or potential love partner. And quite often, this interest manifests itself to a highly abnormal degree, the result being that obsessive compulsive anal eroticism and interest is found in no small number of females.
"Do you like my finger up there, honey? Huh? Oh, I'm going to make you feel so good. You've never felt like this before, have you? Now, I'm going to put my tongue all the way in..
The preceding excerpt was taken from a tape recording made by a young man undergoing analysis by the noted Swedish psychologist, Dr. Viveka Book. This particular patient had a multitude of problems, most of them unrelated to anal eroticism. But his experiences with Laura, a 23-year-old nurse in a proctology clinic, represents a valuable study in the behavior of a uniquely anal-erotic female.
Among other quirks, the man in this case had a particular penchant for coprophilic enjoyment. Unknown to his several female conquests, he tape recorded their sessions of lovemaking, and then masturbated later while listening to the tapes by himself. It is from these recordings, as well as the statements of the man himself, that this study is formed.
"This gal was all sex. I mean like an animal," the patient described Laura during the course of his consultation. "A tall redhead in a mini-skirt and a body like could drive you out of your skin if you're horny. I mean, I figured her for a mean one in bed-scratching and screaming, maybe a little rough and wanting to slap a guy around. She had me just about coming in my pants before we got to my place.
"In the car, see, she was playing with herself, had the dress up and fingering herself. And she felt my penis and got it hard. Now, the first time I knew this was a real kook, she had to lift herself way up from the seat, see, and she put her hand way under herself so she could stick a finger right up her rectum ... right up there. And she didn't give a damn that I knew what she was doing. She wanted me to see what she was doing.
"I got this tape recorder hid in the drawer of the night table, see, and the microphone, so help me, is sitting right there in the open. You know, I bet only one girl in ten will ever notice it and say anything. I can turn it on by reaching back of the bed and plugging it in. And I've got it on a double plug with the lamp, so anybody thinks I'm just plugging in the lamp.
"This Laura was a real kook. I mean, I've had a girl before who likes it in the rectum. This girl had rectum on the brain. Soon as we got undressed, she was crawling all over me to get at my rectum and play with it. I screwed her in her rectum, and that was fine. She wanted me to stick something in her vagina while I did it. The only thing we could find was a cucumber! That was fine by her.
"I mean, all that was nothing, man, compared to the rest. She had this obsession with rectums that wouldn't quit. Laura fixed the mirror on my dresser so we could both watch everything. She liked to watch it go in when I was doing it to her and she INSISTED that I watch when she worked on me. She talked about rectums all the time. I mean, this was all a real adventure to that girl. Rectums were her whole life. She talked about rectums like any other girl gets all excited about a new boyfriend or getting engaged or something...."
Portions of the recorded conversation, accompanied by various sounds, were of particular interest for the researcher in that they provided a record of first-hand insight into her thought processes and the total anal emphasis of her sexuality. While the sounds cannot be duplicated in print, certain excerpts of the conversation are of particular interest. I will repeat some of them here, with only a minimum of deletions:
(After a long pause accompanied by lingual and sucking sounds that followed the opening quote of this study) "Have you ever had a girl who could get her tongue that far in before, honey?"
MAN-"Hell, I've never had a girl do that at all before."
LAURA-"Didn't you like it?"
MAN-"Man, I loved it! I just never had it before. Do it again. Do anything. Hell, I love it." (There were several minutes of sounds and expressions of passion at this point)
LAURA-"Oh, honey, you're hard again. What do you want me to do this time, suck it?" MAN-"Yeah ... great, baby. I can't last long."
LAURA-"Okay, honey ... look? You lie down on your back and let me get over you, okay?"
MAN-"You name it."
LAURA-"Now ... put your finger in my bottom ... o-o-oh, that feels good. Go ahead ... all the way, wiggle it...."
MAN-"Hey ... you're bleeding ... I've got blood on my finger!"
LAURA-"Oh, damn! Don't stop! Put it back in. I don't care ..
In other comments about Laura, the patient had this to say:
"You know ... gee, I've been with a lot of crazy girls, but this Laura was something else. I mean, she didn't care how much she got hurt, and I was bleeding too. She had fingernails. I guess I never noticed it while she was messing with me."
COMMENT: Medical study, such as the Kinsey reports, has shown that at moments of intense passion, the inflicting of pain may not be noticeable. This was undoubtedly true in the man's case. However, with Laura, it may be assumed that the pain was part of the pleasure she sought. Or, at least, that there was some kind of gratification in realizing that she had suffered mild physical damage after the moment of greatest passion had passed.
In almost any case of pronounced interest in analingus, a scatalogical motive of the wish too be humiliated and defiled is suspected. While Laura indicated no interest in actual coprophagy, the consuming of feces, the traces of the product left at the anus and the attendant odors of fecal material would be enough to turn away most people from this practice, despite their oral urge.
All of this fits in with the pattern of masochistic motivation that appeared to be behind nearly all of her forms of sexual expression. In hurting the man also by the use of her fingernails in his anus, Laura was giving vent to the sadistic element that is almost always apparent to some degree. What we are dealing with in sadomasochism, are two poles of the same disorder.
Laura's condition was to the masochistic extreme, yet it was not nearly so pronounced as in many anal-erotic females. In Chapter Six, I will present the case history of one of the most interesting female masochistic anal eroticists that has ever been chronicled.
We have only a brief sketch of Laura's background from the patient involved. She told him that her parents were divorced while she was very young and she was raised by her elderly grandmother, who was a divorcee. She had little contact with males until she left her home at 17 to go to work for the government in Washington. From what she told the patient, there had been a long history of lovers since then, and some history of Lesbian contacts with roommates. All had taken advantage of her in a number of ways.
The picture of the typical "hard-luck" girl emerges, one who finds her existence almost dependent upon the manifestation of being used and abused by her lovers. There is confusion as to sexual polarity. One reason that she must be dominated and taken advantage of by men is that she needs strong proof of her femininity. She probably has a great fear of being homosexual, whether justified or not.
CASE HISTORY (4):
THE ANAL-EROTIC LESBIAN
The average person often has a tendency to think of anal-intercourse only in terms of penile penetration of the anus, sodomy or pederasty in its most basic form. Yet the anal-erotic urge for intercourse utilizing this portion of the body is apparent in no small number of Lesbians. In fact, I have known of some who express a desire to be predicated by a male as they make oral love with their girlfriend. However, this is a bi-sexual aspect of anal-intercourse that will be studied more closely in a later chapter.
In this particular case, we are concerned with a 22-year-old typist and would-be writer of love stories named Doris. She consulted a psychologist about her Lesbianism after entering into a "marriage" arrangement with a 35-year-old professional woman. In my 1966 book, LESBIANISM AND THE SINGLE GIRL, I reported how Doris, after several rather disappointing sexual experiences with married men since her 18th birthday, had discovered her interest in other women through a threesome contact with one of her boyfriends and an older woman whom he knew.
In describing her "greatest sexual enjoyment" in the Lesbian relationship with her businesswoman "husband," Doris displayed her flair for romantic expression by stating:
"Sometimes, when we both come home from a movie late at night, Beth says, 'Undress and lie on your tummy, darling. I'm going to do it!'
"Tremblingly, I quickly take off everything, while Beth watches and strips to her panties, then I spread myself on the bed face down, legs apart.
"J jump with a shock of delight when her tongue bathes the soles of my feet, and her wet lips kiss my ankles and calves. I shudder and squeal when her mouth and tongue travel the backs of my legs, my pelvis moves of its own accord, and I press myself firmly against the bed, reveling in the ecstasy of my enjoyment.
"I suffer the most beautiful torture, and exquisitely unbearable anxiousness when her mouth moves up the backs of my thighs and her devoted fingers gently part my buttocks. I feel I will die of waiting for the most wonderful thrill I have ever known in my life, that magic moment when Beth bestows upon me the greatest blessing of her love. It is impossible to describe the sensation. But I live it with uninhibited joy. My body moves in agonized ecstasy, my groans are loud and long until I must finally scream with uncontrollable spasms of joyous fulfillment...."
Doris had made this statement shortly after falling deeply in love with Beth and setting up housekeeping with her as a "married" couple. Two years later, I managed to have some additional questions put to her through an intermediary.
Q.-You were describing analingus administered by Beth, were you not?
A.-Yes, I was.
Q.-Are you still living with Beth?
A.-No. That idyll lasted only six months. I'm not a romantic dreamer anymore. Lesbian love is so difficult to achieve in this society. Real love, I mean. There have been several loves since that time. I am now living with a 29-year-old Negro woman who is a professional dancer.
Q.-Do you still find satisfaction primarily in being the subject of analingus?
A.-That, and other forms of excitement at the same place. Beth awakened something within me the first time she did that. I was very squeamish about it the first time. I thought she was quite mad for wanting to lick and suck the place where I had just gone to the bathroom. I had never been aware of any connection between sex and my rectum before. Now, I understand that I have a reputation in the gay crowd here. I am known as the girl who will not enter into a love affair with a woman unless she does this to me.
Q.-Do you ever analingue your love partner, or perform any type of anal act upon her?
A.-Never. It would be disgusting for me. I feel that it is dirty and filthy. I am enough of a narcissist though to feel that I am clean enough for my lover to do this to me.
After Beth and I broke up, I understand that Clara, the woman I lived with next, had learned about what Beth did to me. That was the reason she liked me. Her technique was almost identical to Beth's. Clara massaged my belly and put her finger up me, working around until I had reached a climax.
Q.-Have you had any sexual experienced with men during these two years?
A.-Several. My analyst suggested that I could overcome my Lesbianism if I would find a man who would satisfy me in the same manner. This was not easy. I am young and pretty enough so that dates were no problem. It was no problem to lure a man into having sex with me. It was no problem to get a man to go down on me. They usually stopped though when I let them know what I wanted.
One man attempted to put his penis in me there. I objected violently to that. I kicked and screamed. One man, only one out of all of them, enjoyed licking me, kissing me and sucking me there. I did not like the feel of whiskers. I do not like a man as a romantic partner. I want and need the love of an older woman.
Q.-What other anal-erotic acts do you enjoy with a love partner?
A.-Anything that is gentle and loving. I get very aroused when Louise (the current love partner) works her finger in and out of my anus very slowly and in a nice kind of rhythm. I would object if anything larger were used. She lubricates her finger with the passionate secretions from her own vagina. She pushes it in very slowly and works it in and out. I have orgasms this way, one after the other. And also when she had her mouth to my anus.
The rush of water on me there is also nice. Louise has a spray attachment in the tub. I get on my hands and knees and she uses warm water on me for long periods of time. I mean up to half an hour. I do not get passionate then. It relaxes me after she has been making love to me there.
Q.-Would you tell me something about your childhood, your environment, moral attitudes, and so forth?
A.-I would rather not. But I will tell you that I came from a normal home. I was an only child and treated very well by both parents. The only terrible thing that ever happened to me was when mother died just after I graduated from high school. I loved my mother very much.
COMMENT: A case like this is never easy to analyze with so few details given about early childhood experiences. However, from these facts as well as others revealed to her analyst, it was learned that Doris was deeply affected by her mother's early death. The maternal relationship was the closest she had ever come to real love of any other human being.
She rejected all men, dating only married men before she took up Lesbian relationships, because she subconsciously sought a reason for disliking them. Beth was like Doris' mother in many ways, yet she could not reconcile herself to the incest-wish involved in the relationship. In order to make Beth unlike her mother and to make the relationship unlike the mother-daughter situation she recalled, she welcomed the sadistic role that the woman cast her in.
This way, Doris could have her cake and eat it too, so to speak. So long as her lover became the "enslaved masochist," humiliating herself by analinguing her, she could reject the mother-fantasy, although it was always there in the rest of their relationship. The awakening of her anal eroticism provided her with the one way she could rationalize the real symbolism of the relationship by denying the incest-fulfillment it contained. She could never dream of her mother doing anything like that, therefore the sexual part of the relationship could be divorced from the true motivation for the overall Lesbian relationship.
In this case, the real problem was female homosexuality where the love act evolved to forms of anal-intercourse in order that the homosexuality could be justified. The conflict was resolved by putting the love partner in a thoroughly demeaning position for the sexual act, while maintaining an affectionate and loving quality otherwise.
CHAPTER FIVE
THE ACTIVE MALE AND PEDICATIO MULIERUM
Just as most women, because of their passive and normally masochistic nature, may be responsive to anal intercourse in the role of receptor, the sexually active male is generally amenable to play the role of inserter within the context of an overall erotic relationship with a female.
There are few men of active libido and with a generally wide range of sexual experience who have not at one time or another pedicated a female. Those familiar with the prostitutes and brothels of foreign countries, particularly sailors and other servicemen, have told me that many whores make a specialty of this and encourage it on the part of their clients.
"I think in France," a Naval officer told me recently, "and in some of the Eastern ports, they have a kind of operation, something to make the anus more relaxed. I had a girl in Ceylon last year whose anus was as easy to slip into as her vagina. She had a cushioned ... upholstered horse she leaned over for this. Here, we see a typical example of the male attitude in many cases. The man looks upon the act as both sadistic and perverted. So often, he has no idea that a female could actually enjoy the act of pederasty and feels it should be reserved for use with prostitutes or other "debauched" women. While pedicatio mulierum is practiced within many marriages, it is found more frequently outside marriage and among intercourse with whores and other girls for whom the male has no real love, affection or feeling.
There are some males, of course, who find the act personally disgusting and beyond their moral and psychological, and even physical, limitations.

It was undoubtedly a fear of some physical injury or captivus which caused this man to lose erection while attempting pedication. But for many other men, those with weak erections brought about by physical or nervous conditions, it is almost impossible to accomplish anal penetration, even with the use of lubricants. A simple probe of the finger illustrates graphically the tightness of this entrance to the body.
The more sexually active a male is, the more likely that he has had one or more experiences of anal intercourse with a female, for usually with strong libido, comes a desire to experiment with sexual acts other than regular coitus. This is not an iron-clad rule, however, as I know of many men of "conquest" who may have sex with several different girls each week, and practice only regular intercourse.
Again, it is reasonable to assume that a male who is anal-erotic himself, may also find an interest in the anus of his female love partner. If he finds pleasure at this part of his body, he may easily suppose that his partner will also. The exception to this would be where the male's anal eroticism is tied in with a strong element of masochism. Since active pederasty is so often an aggressive and sadistically motivated act, it would not be within the nature of some passively anal-erotic males to perform such an act. And this same aggressive-sadistic element of active pederasty means that probably a majority of those who do pedicate women have little or no interest in deep anal penetrations upon themselves. This desire for both would be more common to one of polymorphous perverse sensitivity.

In order to obtain an interview with one of the most prominent "playboy-lovers" of Europe, I enlisted the aid of a female research assistant who is personally familiar with him. Other aspects of his sex life than anal-intercourse were inquired into so as to present an over-all picture of his varied activity and to illustrate how great a part is played by sodomy, both heterosexual and homosexual. The subject apologized for his bad English, but agreed to answer all questions with an informal intimacy that is, in itself, quite revealing.

A.-Yes, of course. I am not married but I have many girls friends who like to make love. I am 40 years old, five feet-eleven inches, blue eyes, brown hairs. Philippe, as I shall call the subject, and his girlfriends appear to be of excessive libido to a polymorphous perverse degree. The girls are all sexual adventuresses who are compellingly attracted to Philippe because of his reputation as a lover, his virile and varied performance, and his position and money.
A man like this frequently attracts a disproportionate share of oversexed females. They are all highly neurotic, including Philippe. Although he has a high position, he is a product of the idle rich and almost regal environment peculiar to many European aristocrats. Everything in life came to him so easily and effortlessly that he probably became bored with life at an early age. In sex, he undoubtedly found one personal value (though a false one) that could be all of his own making.
Philippe's pride is very evident in the way he expresses himself. My research assistant also reports that he is not content with exhibiting himself merely to a live audience (his reason for desiring group sex), but that he himself photographed with various girls, particularly when in a state of penis erectus.
The emphasis on pederasty here seems to come about by a motivational force aimed at projecting his image of virility and mastery. The element of sadism is present, but not to a great degree. Philippe mentions his own supreme efforts at anal incursion, in fact, as a means of pointing up the struggle it is to be virile. He has a compulsive need to be recognized as a strong and masculine individual.
The only flaw in this picture is his admitted liking of performing fellatio upon the male. The receiving of fellatio by a male and performance of pederasty upon the male, while homosexual acts, are still symbolic of virile aggressiveness. Many otherwise heterosexual males are known to allow homosexuals to fellate them, particularly male hustlers.
The particular value of this study is that it provides a graphic picture of the practice of primarily heterosexual sodomy (pedicatio mulierum) among a group of sexually active individuals who are of sufficient emotional stability to function economically and socially within the mainstream of society without undue criticism.
CHAPTER SIX
SADOMASOCHISM & SODOMY
I have already pointed out the close relationships between sodomy, and most other anal intercourse, and sadomasochism. I have traced the condition from a fixation to the sadistic-anal complex of psychosexual development to the various manifestations of adult anal-erotic behavior and its accompanying activity.
In the previous case-histories, the sadomasochistic elements of anal-intercourse have been evident in varying degrees of intensity and practice. The aggressive force of the active participant who thrusts, even forces his penis through the tiny anal opening of a love partner is almost always performing a sadistic "attack." Conversely, the one who receives this "violent" penetration, is responding masochistically.
Among many homosexuals this element of sadomasochism is evident in the effemination or assumed feminine role of the receiver or passive partner. It is emasculating for the man who allows pedication and, in most cases, he wants to be hurt, wants to be emasculated. The attitude of the one in the active role has always been considered domineering and sadistic in nature. For hundreds of years, the passive pederast was referred to scornfully as the "pathic," a term meaning diseased or morbid.
Nowhere is the masochistic element of so many male anal-erotics evident than in the practice of the female dominatrix, particularly the professional women of this type who collect great sums of money from men to make them virtual slaves to their discipline and bondage techniques. There is also much evidence of anal abuse by wives and non-commercial lovers who are dominant in this regard.

Where the male plays the active role, I have previously cited instances of extreme sadism where the act is continually forced upon the female partner, sometimes to the point where the pain is far more than she can assimilate and enjoy even to the extent of her own masochistic potential.
In the more normal and reasonable instances of heterosexual pederasty and other forms of anal-intercourse, the extent of sadomasochism present is to a relatively normal degree. But because of the very fact that we are dealing here with two types of conditions-analism and algolagnia (sadomasochism)-which lend themselves to perversion, the possibility of truly aberrational behavior and desire is more present than with regular genital-to-genital coitus.
CASE HISTORY (6):
THE COMPLETELY MASOCHISTIC ANAL-EROTIC FEMALE AND HER SADISTIC HUSBAND AND LOVERS
During all my recent study on anal-erotic behavior in particular, as well as more than 20 years of research and study into abnormal sex behavior on two continents, I have never before encountered a more completely masochistic passive pederast than Mary, a 34-year-old college educated woman and mother of two who is married to a university professor.
Both Mary and Ron lead a very active sex life together and on their own. They are a highly sophisticated 'swinging" couple, participating in group sex with couples and others. They each have several separate love affairs (many of Mary's are Lesbian), and they sometimes spend the greater part of a weekend in anal-erotic sessions between themselves.
Ron, the sadistically inclined husband who has almost single-handedly cultivated his wife's bizarre proclivities to the absolute extreme, is quiet and noncommittal. He will not talk of his activities, yet readily corroborates the almost unbelievable story that his wife unfolds. On the other hand, Mary talks of her strange sex life and desires as if she feels forced to. In seeking a consultant, she undoubtedly wanted more than anything else to subconsciously (or perhaps consciously) purge herself. It is entirely within the masochistic make-up of her twisted personality that she secretly delights in humiliating herself even further by admitting to the extreme suffering and base indignities that she enjoys so often.
It is quite interesting to note the various other elements that are often associated with both sadomasochism and analism, which are evident in Mary's case. She is a meticulous and neat housekeeper and mother, for one thing, and has a mania for orderliness and cleanliness.
Of her early life and background and instances that may have contributed to her current masochistic-anal-bi-sexual condition, this tall, full-bodied and vivacious brunette will say very little.
"I don't know whether bowel training or anal fingering as a child has anything directly to do with the desire for anal intercourse," she started to answer my first question in the basic and earthy manner of expression I was to become used to. "My desire for it was first developed during my Lesbian years when we used to do a lot of mutual stimulations. My experience in sex started out as a Lesbian. I was initiated in this art during my high school years and it lasted through university and graduate school. I met Ron in graduate school where he was a lecturer and he was the first man to take my body and taught me the pleasures of heterosexual love. Although I cannot now do without him, I do have deep interests in women-so this makes me a bi-sexual. This is where my friend the former Countess fits in. We regularly engage in threesomes with her. Ron, you see, is strictly heterosexual....

After more specific questioning about her masochistic enjoyment of different sexual variations, Mary finally confessed to some of her "highly unorthodox" fantasies, as well as humiliating situations that she has actually experienced. It was obvious by her speech and choice of worlds that she became excited over talking about these things, to the point of erotic arousal, while at the same time feeling self-conscious and a bit guilty.
"I can come," she admitted, "when Ron uses the belt on my buttocks, vagina and anus, but I have never really been slapped hard. I've always wondered how it would be to be manhandled to orgasm-the nearest thing to being raped! The fantasy of being raped does arouse me erotically. I have enjoyed in the past being bitten on my thighs, buttock cheeks, and around my vagina lips and anal opening, but this was some time ago.
"I am fascinated by the idea of Negroes in sexual relationships, although we have never participated with any before, just Caucasians and Orientals. The black and white contrast would be so artistic! "Yes, when I'm screwing, I like to use words like: 'Fuck me, hurt me, hit me, slap me, kill me, and so forth.' I don't know why. I like the words.
The other matter that was suggested by Mary's previous statement was her oral eroticism. Was it as strong as her analism, and what was her preferred method of fellatio?
"I love it, yes," she replied, "but it is nothing like as good as anus-screwing. I love to keep Ron's half limp penis inside my mouth after he ejaculates. "They are much more intense and do not hamper normal vaginal climaxes. In fact, when they come together, ooohhh! There is nothing like it. It took Ron almost five months to break mine in before I experienced my first orgasm in my anus, but it is really worth it! Believe me, it is!
"When Ron alternates between my vagina and anus, I can come in both places. The dog position is the best for this, I think. T usually tell Ron to ejaculate inside my anus as I come there. He would then use his fingers or insert a dildo to make me come simultaneously in my vagina. Sometimes, I prefer to have him come there while using a dildo or thrusting both of his thumbs deep inside my asshole. I don't know why, but I sure love being tormented in my anus. Ron likes to spread my anal opening way wide apart with his thumb and fingers, and then insert his tongue in deep and excite the swollen walls there."
The quality of sexual adventuress was more than evident in several experiences that Mary related concerning people she had met while traveling alone or with the former Countess. The one which best illustrates with graphic empathy the extreme masochism of her anal sexuality is worth repeating here. It occurred while she and her husband were living in Japan and she and the Countess made a sight-seeing trip to Manila and other Asian cities for a few days. I will quote her exact words:
"We were invited to a diplomatic reception where we were introduced to a West German diplomat from Bonn. Some of the Filipino men at the party egged him on and he would just not let go of me. The Countess was really mad because she was paying for our trip and made me promise before we left Tokyo that we would just engage in Lesbian activities. But we were tricked into a threesome once in Hong Kong and twice in Bangkok, and so already she was mad at me for that. But I just couldn't get rid of this man, and so both of us eventually ended up in his apartment-penthouse around ten that night.
"After some drinks, he told me to take my clothes off, then get down on the floor on all fours, which I did. He brought out a bottle of vaseline and rubbed it all over my vagina and anus, between the cheeks of my buttocks, then with his fingers started rubbing it into my anus and rectum. He was quite rough about it, but I enjoyed this immensely-especially the feel of his fingers pushing the vaseline up my anal canal as he spread open the anal lips with one hand. He then went to he kitchen and came back with a small baseball bat and a long broom handle (it was just the stick with the broom part sawed off). He knelt down behind me, and shoved the bat (the top part where it is bulging) into my vagina, and it went in smoothly.
"I then felt something pushing up my anus and when I looked around, I saw him inserting the long broom handle into my anal opening. It went in smoothly along my anal canal and I enjoyed it and moaned in delight. The tip of the handle entered my rectum and I thought he would stop there, as Ron does. But he kept on pushing it in deep until I am sure it was entering into my colon toward my lower intestines, and I crumpled over and just about lost my breath.
"But I rather enjoyed this experience of being ravaged so deeply inside my body. He then stood up and holding the end of the bat handle, he started to push and ram violently and told me to crawl on the floor. He began twisting the bat and the broom handle and shoving like mad, and I thought I would pass out. I started to crawl, thinking he would let up on the ramming and pushing, but he kept following me and using both the bat and broom handle fiercely inside me. I finally protested for him to take it out of my rectum, but he wouldn't. The Countess, who was watching, also protested, but could not stop him. He made me crawl around the room till I finally made it back to where I was at first.
"He then got down on his knees and started pushing both the bat and handle upward with great strength, telling me to spread both my hands and knees and walk around again like a dog. He kept shoving the handle up and down my anal canal and every time I'd stop he would push it in deep and make me hurt so that I would have to do as he said. He made me stand up, lean over the sofa, put one leg over the back of the couch, then drag my body all along the back, then down on all fours on the floor, while all the time he was shoving and twisting the bat and handle.
"It was when he made me get on top of the sofa that I reached my first orgasm, and I could see that this made him very happy. I reached my second orgasm when he made me drag my body on my stomach along the back of the long couch down onto the floor again. Later, he made me lie down on my back on the couch with one leg over the back, and he held the bat inside my vagina as he used the handle roughly in my anus.
"I tried to reach up to take the handle out of my anus, but he pushed me down with his legs and threw me a cushion and told me to hug it tightly. I finally panted out to him not to ram it so roughly deep inside my colon, but to move it up and down strongly along my anal canal. This he started doing. He would draw the handle completely out, then start ramming it in again. So, I asked him to draw it completely out every five strokes, and to keep twisting the handle to his left. This way I knew I could concentrate my nerves there more efficiently for quicker orgasms. He kept this up for about 15 minutes and I could feel the liquid oozing out of my anal opening and hear the sound of the handle working inside my anus. I finally came, and this one I enjoyed the most.
"He then took the bat and handle out, and placed a cushion under my buttocks, then called the Countess over to his side and made her strip. He grabbed her right in her vagina and pulled her over to him as he mounted me and inserted his penis in my vagina. He grabbed my legs and made me lock my legs around his hips and told me to start pumping, as he embraced the Countess's buttocks and buried his head between her legs and started sucking her. I heard her come, but he was still pumping away in me. She protested slightly when he inserted his fingers in her anus and continued to suck her. He then came in me and I kept my legs clamped around him and moved my hips as he sucked her to her second climax. I wasn't able to come.
"Later he fixed us some more drinks, then he made me get down on all fours on the couch and he started to screw me in my vagina and anus alternately. He finally came inside me at the same time I did. I told him to ram his fingers up my anus as he was in my vagina. Just before he drove us back to our hotel, he sucked the Countess again. In the car, he said it was the first time he had done what he had done to my anus to any woman, although he had often thought of wanting to do just that.
"About a week later, I felt a dull pain in my lower abdomen and Ron thought it could be from what happened in Manila. I had told him all about it and both of us were worried because the pain was severe for four days. Ron told me I should go see a doctor, but I didn't want to, because if he should examine my anal opening and rectum he would certainly figure out what I went through. The pains finally subsided and eventually disappeared. Ron was worried that my bladder or kidney might have been hurt, but I did not think so, as there had been no bleeding at all."
After this long recitation, which Mary told with a tone of delight and pleasure, I asked her again if she could not think back and find some reason for being the way she is. I attempted to explore her childhood, which she insisted was only "normal and average." I suggested that she was using these tortures as a way of purging herself of some terrible guilt feeling.
"In my case," she insisted, "I do not have any psychological qualms to aid me. Others may be purging themselves of horrible guilt, but not I. I just love the feeling of physical pain on my body. The psychological thrill I get is mainly when I am made to assume humiliating poses for Ron. My pleasures seem mainly to come from being tied up in various helpless positions so that my vagina and anus are fully exposed and I can offer no resistance, but only anticipate what will happen; being whipped and belted, especially on the small of the back, the buttocks, the inner thighs, and on the vagina and clit and anal opening, and being tormented inside my anal canal and rectum. Believe me, there is nothing else to it..
COMMENT: Of course, there is a lot more to Mary's condition than simply an inborn sensitivity and appreciation for masochistic anal suffering. Yet the problem may not hinge on as deep-rooted a psychological base as many.
Her Lesbian activities began in school. They were the first interpersonal sexual acts and she responded to them quite readily, a situation that many females fall into much more unwittingly than males fall into homosexual practices, because of the much closer intimacies and endearments that girls share.
Perhaps it is her Lesbian experiences in the late teens that precipitated, in a way, the entire pattern of her adult behavior. If guilt feelings did result from these earlier encounters, she could have looked for and found the man who would purge the sin from her, so to speak, by being sadistic with females, Recall her statements about the fact that men could spot her proclivities merely by looking at her.
Much of the blame here may lie with Ron. Mary was undoubtedly neurotic, masochistic (although subconsciously so) and had been made aware of her anal potential in Lesbian relations, at the time he met her. A man with a dominant personality and a twisted mind can almost mold the life of a susceptible individual like this, if he is so inclined.
It is evident in the little bit that she related, that Ron immediately exploited her anal eroticism to just about the absolute limit, and in a systematic way that can almost be described as diabolical in its perfection. The roots of masochism were already present. So, from this point, he ventured on to modes of punishment that went far beyond the more symbolic passiveness of the receptor role in sodomy.
Group-sex and humiliation were then introduced. Furthermore, Ron allowed Mary to cultivate a Lesbian relationship with the former Japanese Countess. In this way, considering that her early Lesbian experience may be one of the causes of her need for punishment, the condition was constantly refueled, the need for more punishment ever-present. The masochistic-anal complex was thus fed continually, the need for more diversions and new forms of torture (punishment) increased.
While some early childhood or infantile fixation at the anal level may have set up the proclivity, there seems to be a distinct possibility that Mary could have led a relatively normal sex life if she had come into contact with a different type of people and married a different type of man.
One feature that is quite obvious from a study of her speech patterns and use of words is the apparent taboo that she places on her most favored sexual parts. Mary uses the most earthy expressions of the English language in referring to coitus and the genital parts. Yet only rarely does she refer to her anal parts by anything except the most proper and clinical terms," anus," "rectum," "anal canal," etc.
In all of my practice, I have never found a female who so completely illustrates the inherent relationship between sadomasochism and sodomy, particularly pedicatio mulierum.
Of course, there are two sides to every coin, and a study of this couple from Ron's side would be an invaluable research view into the sadisticanal-complex of the actively algolagnic anal-conscious male. Yet, as is often the case, we are forced to look at this kind of relationship only through the eyes of the passive partner, who must purge herself by glorying in recitations of her pleasure-pain experiences and sometimes amplifying the humiliations she is made to suffer.
CHAPTER SEVEN
RELATION TO FROTTAGE AND BUTTOCK FETISHISM
One of the psychological reason for the sexual attraction of the legs, particularly of the female, is what is known as the theory of "pillars to the Temple." The sexual aim of the average male being the female vagina, the calves and thighs contain an added quality of eroticism (in addition to the natural attractiveness they may posses) because they lead to this desired goal.
The buttocks then, when considered as the gateway to the anus, quite obviously has a similar connection to those with active anal interest. The similarity in configuration to large feminine breasts is also significant, of course, but when it comes to an obsessive appreciation of the buttocks and especially when this is accompanied by an urge to contact or strike the buttocks, we must often suspect that the anus may be the real aim of such interest, although the true reason may be disguised or withheld for one reason or another.
A simple explanation as to why the true aim may be denied is the disgust and contempt with which so many people associate the practice of anal-intercourse. Just as the Don Juan type often shrouds his subconscious incest-wish in open promiscuity and the planting of a tag of evil (and sexy) on all females by pursuing them for coitus, the buttock fetishist and frotteur (one who likes to rub against the female buttocks, particularly clandestinely in the form of the crowd "masher) hides his real desire by placing undue and increased sexual emphasis upon the buttocks.
Male homosexuals, many whom may only practice fellatio and mutual masturbation, are commonly heard in romantic praise of the male buttocks, more often than not those of well-built youths. Undoubtedly, even those who will not perform sodomy, are still attracted to these bodily orbs because of the symbolic reference they make to the anal entrance.
In the case of the subway or crowd "masher," who positions himself behind a female and presses against her buttocks so that his penis would be sliding between the cleavage if they were nude, there seems to be little doubt that this activity bears similar resemblance to what many call "dry-intercourse," where they rub themselves together (by mutual consent, of course) face-to-face on the dance floor or while standing up to kiss in a place not private enough for more intimate relations.
We also find some buttock fetishists and frotteurs who, in their relations with consenting love partners, will place the penis in the cleavage of the buttocks and work it between in a copulative motion. There seems to be little doubt that this is an expression of a "forbidden" desire to penetrate the anus of the partner concerned, whether that person be male or female.
When one looks at the mouth of a highly erotic potential love partner, the image of oral intercourse or the suggestion of it is almost always there, whether denied or not. The same is true of a coital wish or idea upon gazing at the genitalia of a potential mate. Therefore an erotic fascination with the buttocks most often is an expression of anal interest, either overt or latent.
"I just like it man!" a bi-sexual exclaimed when queried as to his attempts at frottage in public places. "What's a difference if it's a man or a woman? They all feel the same if you're workin' hot up against 'em....
Here, we see an example of the bi-sexual feature of buttock fetishism and anal interest, a subject to be explored more thoroughly in the next chapter, and a clear demonstration of the way anal-interest often blurs into facets of so many different aberrational instincts.
Where buttock fetishism becomes fixated in infancy or childhood, the adult may be often confused as to his orientation. If he is strongly heterosexual, he nevertheless finds erotic attraction in the male backside because of the similarity of configuration. And exactly the reverse may be true for the person who is primarily homosexual in orientation.
Nor is penetration with the penis necessarily a prerequisite desire in such instances. As we have seen before, Lesbians often contrive their own ways of catering to each others' desires for anal intercourse.
In summing up, it may safe to assume that almost all with anal interest in a love partner also have an obsession with the buttocks, which could be called a fetish, in most cases. And so far as those with a buttocks fetish or a desire for frottage are concerned, the subconscious (or conscious) aim of this fetish seems certainly to be a desire for anal-intercourse.
BEHAVIORAL STUDY (7):
FROTTAGE AND BUTTOCK ATTRACTION AS INDUCEMENTS FOR HETEROSEXUAL SODOMY
When I was in England not too long ago, I was able to contact a host of people in the British 'sexual underground" and conduct lengthy interviews with many of them. One of the most interesting subjects for behavioral research whom I discovered in England was an outstandingly beautiful woman of 45, a "ravishing" redhead with an exceptionally well-preserved figure, who is also a well-known feminist and writer.
Marion, as I shall call her, had been a sexual adventuress most of her life, yet her sexual desires were not particularly abnormal in content, although the quantity appeared disproportionately high. She recounted no Lesbian experiences and no abnormal manifestations of sadomasochism. Her interest in anal-intercourse constituted no more than ten or fifteen percent of her total sexual experience.
"One thing I dislike about being taken in the anus, as you Americans put it," she told me with the amazing candor that has made many of her articles quite controversial in international publications, "is being tom, and I always am prepared by having a suitable lubricant handy.
If I haven't, or if the man is very big, then it's NO! And I mean N-O! I do not, repeat not, like a sore bum! I have been bummed, to use an English expression, more than once, but I have learned to take certain precautions. You will have gathered long before now that I am not an extreme masochist.
"Let me clarify that, please. Now one has to say, as in my case, I am not masochistic, when, in fact, I know that I am in the sense that I like to be dominated by the man of my choice and, at times, to have a little pain-the operative word is little-inflicted on me. his does not conflict with my feminist views, you must realize, as I still demand the right to choose any man, and to choose to do only those things which are agreeable to me. The same rights I would grant him, neither of us being forced to do that which is truly distasteful to us."
In a philosophical moment, Marion posed the following question about the why of anal-intercourse:
"I wonder why so many men, when they really get to know a woman and have some kind of a deep relationship, want more than her vagina and yearn for her anus? With respect, I wonder sometimes whether there is a 'reason' for these things, and whether mere 'feeling' is the true answer. I think that, perhaps, the reason, if any, is a kind of general one ... I know I am moved a tremendous amount by whims and intuitions."
And then in thinking back, she did recall that at least one man who enjoyed anal-intercourse with her had a "reason" for his preference that is of particular interest to our study.
"The first time an American told me," Marion prefaced her story with an amusing anecdote, "that he liked a 'piece of ass,' I thought he meant a donkey. You see, we just don't use such an expression here.
"This reminds me of a friend of mine on the staff of an American firm here in London and whom I see sometimes. It is difficult as he is married to a 'respectable' woman whom he has not touched, so he said, for the last seven years, although they are on very good terms. I know from someone else that they occupy separate rooms, ostensibly because he snores so loudly.
"Our friendship goes back to the war years (World War II) so I can't deceive him about my age. We were both in uniform-I was in the Women's Services. He was then an ordinary, young G.I. to whom I took a fancy. He had been wounded on active service and was now a clerk in the same building as housed me. He said I was the first girl to go down on him.
"Then the young fool, on returning to the States, fell 'in love' with a virgin, married her still in that state, and realized later that they were sexually incompatible. What he thought was maidenly modesty was plain frigidity which nothing has and now can never alter.
"He is really heterosexual but he told me that he formed a homosexual association in the Army with a top sergeant and he now loved to bum (pedicate) a woman preferably.
"I met him quite by chance again after the war, not long after, in a store in Piccadilly. He was with his wife and he introduced me to her. I let her think I was cold as ice and I visited their home once or twice.
"The first time he got up my bottom was rather amusing in the way he beat around the bush-an unintentional pun, I assure you. He was taking me from behind in my vagina when he paused two or three times and I heard him coughing nervously. Eventually he asked me, 'Can I do it?' The penny did not drop and I said innocently, 'I thought you were! Then he whispered, 'Your anus, baby." I said 'O.K.', and I stretched out my hand for a lubricant I have learned to keep handy on such occasions.
"I put just a little in it and then I heard him sigh deeply as his knob went in. He simply adores bumming and, the last time I saw him, not so very long ago, he satisfied me in front with cunnilingus and then turned me over. He is a grand chap and I like him very much. He says he gets a far different and better sensation when he comes inside my rectum than in the usual place. I wonder why? I like it too sometimes and I can actually come sometimes, though not with him-it depends on the man, I think, and how he does it."
Marion related several instances of frottage to me during the long hours of discussion covering various phases of sexual behavior, and admitted that she had an almost narcissistic pride in both her buttocks and breasts. "I seldom wear a bra, or what are commonly called 'foundation' garments, as I do not need them," she explained, "And I certainly wear none of these things when I am, shall we say, out on my own and in an adventurous mood."
One of the incidents Marion related which best illustrates the part that buttock fetishism and frottage can play in this regard, occurred in a theater. With her usual flair for color and background detail, she expressed herself as follows:
"I had had a very tiring day on this particular visit to London, also a disappointing day from a business angle. I felt unsettled and rather irritable, though I am normally a placid, happy-go lucky person. I had been lying down a few minutes, when I suddenly decided to heed my restlessness. I got up and put on the best face I could, put on a suit that hugged my figure, and wore very little beneath it, despite the cool weather outside.
"I called in at a pub first and had a brandy and dry ginger. Well, I had my drink and went on my way, not knowing where. Fed up and alone. There is always a good standby: a cinema! It was not a nice evening and the cinema I found was showing a good film and was pretty full, standing room only downstairs where I prefer to be.
"I got as near to the rail at the back of the hall as I could. I noticed a rather good type of man who glanced, I thought, appraisingly at my buttocks, as I edged along to a position where I could see. The man was slightly in front of me and was a head taller than I. He said there was plenty of room and he could see quite comfortably over my shoulder. He smiled at me and I looked at him in the eyes and said thank you as nicely as I could. I liked his voice, which suggested a professional man, or at least, a better educated kind of man.
"I stood in front of him and I said I could see clearly, thank you very much, in reply to his question. At the same time, I turned my head and pressed back as if to say, 'Thank you very much indeed,' nothing more. He pressed me back and I felt his penis stiffening against my bottom. He put his arm diffidently around my waist as I pressed back, and I took his hand in mine and led it up to my breasts. He found it a simple matter of unloose a couple of buttons and insert his fingers to play with my naked bubs. It was one of the better class cinemas that are very dark and small, so I had no worry of our being observed.
"He was breathing rather heavily when we finally found seats. We sat very close together and I whispered that he should not go too far-for practical reasons, not coquetry-and he contented himself by merely pressing his hand on my 'triangle.' I found it difficult to become absorbed in the picture and I agreed with his suggestion that we should go out for a drink and a natter-the latter being a North Country expression for pleasant chatting.
"After a few drinks, he told me that he lived in the White House, a good class hotel at Regents Park that consists of bachelor flatlets and has club amenities. I found his room delightful and charmingly furnished. We went through the pleasant preliminaries of kissing and having drinks before taking off our clothes. I am all for love play.
"I must have been on edge from my trying day, because I managed to spill my drink on his rug. He was playful and told me I was naughty and that he should have to chastise me. I love to play silly games in a mood like that, so I told him I would scream if he dared do such a thing. We were both naked and he was fingering and kissing me as he said it.
"He did not like canes, he said, but liked to use his hand, and he certainly did so when he turned me over. My bottom was red, but my 'triangle' was moist and I enjoyed it after the first two or three slaps. He didn't apparently care for going down or for having me suck his penis, but he certainly was in me a long time without coming. He really knew when to stop in order to preserve our mutual pleasure.
"He asked me whether he could finish up inside my bum. I said he could if he had a lubricant handy. He quickly produced a tin of white vaseline and began the process of preparation. All this, of course, only took a few seconds, but soon enough for him to go a little limp as the result of going to the dressing table. I put the vaseline on it myself and it soon was stiff again and he put a little more around the place of entrance. He held my bubs in his hands as he carefully pushed in. His penis was long and slender, soon up me to the hilt.
"I have a small bum and he was just the right size and length. I found myself coming again, which rarely happens when a man is inside my bottom. The truth to tell, he had me wanting more when he came, which wasn't long, and he told me afterwards that his ideal sensation was to take a women in her vagina and then end up by coming in her bum.
"He insisted on washing my parts when he got an erection again. I didn't want to go through it all again, but I did have a fancy to go down on that long, slender apparatus he sported. It wasn't his cup of tea, he told me, so I had to work hard on him with my tongue and lips. He squealed as he was coming in my mouth and, afterwards, he said he was inclined to think that a sucking off was more pleasant than he had hitherto thought.
"In our natting afterwards, he was quite emphatic in telling me that he had a penchant for pressing against female buttocks in crowds, that it felt quite lovely. But seldom, he said, did such little adventures turn out so well as this one had. I smiled contentedly, as I always do when knowing that I have pleased a man so by being free of inhibitions and allowing nature to take its course."
COMMENT: In Marion, I find a very sexually active women with probably an average amount of experience in anal-intercourse in ratio to her overall erotic activity. During the length of our discussion, instances of anal-intercourse and enjoyment from this form of relationship was far overshadowed by regular coitus and oral relations. In fact, if Marion could be said to have any 'specialty" it would be fellatio.
In view of this relatively normal set of desires, the reactions of various males with a desire for heterosexual sodomy is quite interesting. Marion's buttocks are not large, not as large, actually as the average female's. But they are of a particularly attractive configuration, jutting out just enough to be extremely inviting for the fetishist or frotteur, with a very pronounced cleavage that is often discernible in the formfitting clothes she wears. Little wonder that she has often been the target of just this type of man.
The particular adventure that I have quoted above involves a man who is definitely a buttock fetishest and frotteur. But unlike many people in this classification, he has the desire to follow through and perform anal-intercourse, if the opportunity presents itself.
The earlier episode that Marion spoke of is more related to the bi-sexual nature of some expressions of anal interest. The male partner claimed that his interest in performing active pederasty with a women evolved from his homosexual experiences in the Army. This is certainly not the first time that I have heard this story.
Freud categorized this type person as a contingent invert or homosexual, one who is capable of having relations with one of his own sex when love partners of the opposite sex are inaccessible. This man's experiences other than that with the top sergeants have been heterosexual. Therefore, I do not believe that he should necessarily be classed as even bi-sexual in orientation. The fact may be that the buttocks of the sergeant was attractive to him because it resembled the female buttocks. In other words, the buttock fetishism may have been established before the homosexual experience occurred.
I will explore this possibility further in the following chapter.
CHAPTER EIGHT
ROLE IN TRANSVESTISM AND BI-SEXUALITY
"I love exotic high heels, lingerie and nylons, indeed everything exotic. In face, my greatest pleasure is to be introduced to a new experience. Milly (a female friend) and I, try to work out what is the best approach to stimulation and orgasm....The heterosexual approach to T-V (transvestism or cross-dressing) is the absolute best. Homosexual use of T-V spoils it. However, I have known what it is to experience a passive role and the pleasure of being penetrated, though I never knew it till I was past forty. But I could never accept this from the very masculine type, only with other T-V's....I live with 'Janice,' a fellow T-V. We do many things together...."
The preceding statement was made by one of the best-known transvestites in the world. It illustrates the definite relationship between those males who like to dress and act as women, yet deny vehemently that they should be classified as homosexuals, and anal-intercourse. I have seldom had a professional contact with a transvestite who did not admit a personal interest in sodomy, particularly as a passive pederast.
Yet, as the above statement shows, most transvestites still prefer to think of themselves as being heterosexual in preference for sexual acts. One man whom I interviewed at great length claimed that he was a "male lesbian." It is my personal opinion that the phenomenon of transvestism is deeply tied in with the bi-sexual character often found in those with a liking for anal-intercourse. The preceding chapter also was concerned with this aspect to some degree, showing the ever-present overlap of so many phenomena that are closely associated with anal eroticism and buttock fetishism.
In considering merely the symbolic appeal of pederasty, buttock fetishism, frottage, the whole spectrum of anal eroticism and interest in the buttocks and anuses of others, there is a bi-sexual current that runs through it all. While this does not mean that everyone with anal interest is something less than heterosexual, it does mean that the symbolism of bi-sexuality is there, the potentiality for concurrent homosexuality is there.
Perhaps one of the best illustrations of bi-sexual interest in anal-intercourse is the inclusion of so many anal-erotic acts between swingers of the same sex at erotic parties that are heterosexual in character otherwise. In erotic literature also, we find that heterosexual themes are often interlaced with episodes of homosexual sodomy.
One technique employed by many writers of classic as well as contemporary erotica, is to make use of a female narrator (often a character in the story) to describe an act of homosexual sodomy. In this way, the heterosexual reader responds to the titillation of the female, her interest in playing the role of voyeur to a homosexual act. The method is quite clever in that it can vicariously bring about arousal of the homosexual personality component in a person who would otherwise deny its existence.
Over 200 years ago, the erotic classicist John Cleland utilized this technique in his MEMOIRS OF A WOMAN OF PLEASURE, now known the world over as FANNY HILL in English, and by probably a half dozen different translations in other languages. In this most widely read of the former "dirty" books, it is the young harlot Fanny Hill herself who narrates in detail her view of two young men in flagrento delicto whom she spied on over a partition in her room. This passage was originally deleted from many of the abridged versions of the book, but is quoted here from the original:
"For presently the eldest unbuttoned the other's breeches, and removing the linen barrier, brought out to view a white shaft, middle sized, and scarce fledged, when after handling and playing with it a little, with other dalliance, all received by the boy without other opposition than certain wayward coyness, then times more alluring than repulsive, he got him to turn round, with his face from him, to a chair that stood hard by, when knowing, I suppose, his office, the Ganymede now obsequiously leaned his head against the back of it, and projecting his body, made a fair mark, still covered with his shirt, as he thus stood in a side view to me, but fronting his companion, who, presently unmasking his battery, produced an engine that certainly deserved to be put to a better use, and very fit to confirm me in my disbelief of the possibility of things being pushed to odious extremities, which I had built on the disproportion of parts; but this disbelief I was now to be cured of, as by my consent all young men should likewise be, that their innocence may not be betrayed into such snares, for want of knowing the extent of their danger, for nothing is more certain than that ignorance of a vice is by no means a guard against it.
"Slipping, then, aside the young lad's shirt, and tucking it up under his cloaths behind, he shewed to the open air those globular fleshy eminences that compose the Mount Pleasants of Rome, and which now, with all the narrow vale that intersects them, stood displayed and exposed to his attack. Nor could I without a shudder behold the dispositions he made for it. First, then, moistening well with spittle his instrument, obviously to make it glib; he pointed, he introduced it, as I could plainly discern, not only from its direction, and my losing sight of it, but by the writhing, twisting, and soft murmured complaints of the young sufferer; but at length, the first straights of entrance being pretty well got through, everything seemed to move and go pretty currently on, as on a carpet road, without much rub or resistance; and now, passing one hand round his minion's hips, he got hold of his red-topped ivory toy, that stood perfectly stiff, and shewed, that if he was like his mother behind, he was like his father before; this he diverted himself with, whilst with the other he wantoned with his hair, and leaning forward over his back, drew his face, from which the boy shook the loose curls that fell over it, in the posture he stood him in, and brought him towards his, so as to receive a long breathed kiss; after which, renewing his driving, and thus continuing to harass his rear, the height of the fit came on with its usual symptoms, and dismissed the action."
It is quite interesting to note that, although Cieland included this passage in his erotic literary masterpiece, that he prefaced it with the most ridiculous condemnations by Fanny Hill herself, a cheap house harlot who had participated in the most debauched behavior imaginable, both Lesbian and heterosexual, since she was a teenager.
In referring back to the role of the transvestite in anal-erotic behavior with a bi-sexual component, one may gather from the preceding scene how much more attractive the passive youth's effeminate appearing "promontories" would have seemed had he been dressed in female lingerie-heels, nylons, garter belt, etc. What with the similarity of the buttocks in both sexes, a little extra in the way of female attire might almost complete the illusion to the extent that the rear view, so to speak, would hold interest for the most virile male, particularly if he was not aware of the sex of the individual so attired.
A transvestite is often created from the very same infantile and childhood environment as an avowed and overt homosexual. Yet he seems to sincerely want and need the love of a female. Failing to achieve this, usually because of fear of the female, he seeks a symbolic closeness by wearing female attire. The "feel of silk" as some analysts call this, acts as a substitute for the feel of lingerie and semi-nakedness of a real live woman.
But like the overt homosexual, the transvestite must also frequently accept something less must gain interpersonal gratification with another transvestite. He is, in a sense, a male lesbian.

A RENOWNED TRANSVESTITE'S REVEALING STATEMENT
The well-known transvestite whom I quoted earlier in this chapter as admitting that he had participated in an enjoyed passive pederasty, revealed quite a bit about himself, although unintentionally, in the course of a single statement that he made to me. I repeat it here:

COMMENT: This man's basic problem is quite transparent. He tries to throw up an intellectual screen to hide his impotency with females. Literally, he is so afraid of women that he cannot produce with them. Yet his sexual drive is aimed at both females and, for fear of them, female things.
His actual relationships with women almost all stopped short of physical contact. He rationalized his problem of potency by looking for some 'higher' relationship, some psychic magnetism. The simple fact of the matter is that he cannot bring himself to successfully performing a physical act with a female, although he desires this more than anything else in the world.
As a substitute for what he really wants, he must be a female himself, so that he can love himself. He is narcissistic, but since he desires something more interpersonal than masturbation on occasion, he "allows" himself to be pedicated by another transvestite, who is also feminine, never by a "real" homosexual.

One of Britain's most popular transvestite's is a 48-year-old retired ship's captain, a man who has proved his masculine ruggedness during years of hardy sea duty. Before I inquired more about his current practices and mode of life, I asked Gilbert to tell me of some of the "milestones" or accomplishments that seemed important to him or that stuck out in his memory. The ones he recalled emphasized the nature of bi-sexuality that passive pederasty held for him.

COMMENT: It seems patently obvious that Gilbert's abnormal childhood environment and the mother-son relationship is the root cause of his condition. Without using the words that would express a value judgment, he admits that his own mother helped to corrupt him. She encouraged him to take the female role in plays, to wear his sister's clothes. Apparently, she wanted to treat him as a girl and at the same time designed him a transvestite's corset when he was a developed teenager, using her own hands to maneuver his penis into place.
In further conversation, Gilbert also told me that a schoolteacher who rented a room at his mother's place had introduced him to passive pederasty, with his mother's knowledge. With this kind of background, he progressed to female impersonations during his military service and was the natural target for both homo and bi-sexual males.
His wife was just as debauched as his mother. Clara was also bi-sexual and engaged in many unusual and bizarre practices with women and couples. During the almost 20 years of their marriage, they indulged in wife-swaps with "almost a hundred" other couples and had many threesomes with both males and females.
While Gilbert is decidedly a bi-sexual transvestite in declared preference and in practice, it seems that he is becoming more and more oriented to complete homosexuality. The way he expresses his 'superb" pleasure in regard to homosexual relations is a giveaway. He still appreciates the female as an erotic character, yet his outlets are primarily other males.
Overall though, his case history is certainly a good example of the behavioral patterns often found with a bi-sexual transvestite who prefers anal intercourse. It is quite noticeable that oral sex plays only an insignificant part in his activities and that sodomy is preferred to regular coitus when with females. The presence of his wife at so many previous sessions reveals the same kind of vicarious element of bi-sexuality found at the fantasy level in the earlier quote from FANNY HILL.
CHAPTER NINE
ANAL-EROTIC FANTASY
In today's sex-conscious and permissive society, one often hears such expressions of angry rejection as "Up your ass!" In some circles it has almost replaced the old standby, "Go to hell!" And while such phrases are not usually meant in the literal sense, their prevalence is a fair indication of the existence of an anal-erotic fantasy that is near universal.
It would undoubtedly be safe to say that almost everyone who has not participated in sodomy or other anal-erotic acts has at least fantasized themselves in either the active or passive role in this connection. A noted British humanitarian recently expressed himself in print by writing a pseudonymous letter-to-the editor that saw publication, and read, in part:
"The sexual love of a desirable woman has always provided me with the greatest pleasure, the most wonderful orgasms. But despite these pleasures, which, fortunately, I indulge quite often, I want to one time know the sensation of being really penetrated. I want to feel my lower body entered in passion and know the frictions of coitus with a stiff male penis. I must have this once before I die and only then will I know the way a woman feels and be able to sympathize with her sensations."
With others, the fantasy becomes an obsession, and yet they cannot 'allow' themselves to give in to it. In many of these cases, a mental breakdown may occur or, short of this, the individual desperately seeks professional help.
"I have a problem ... this is awful," a young California man told me pitifully, dramatically, "I like girls very much and I like to be dominated, I like to be a slave for girls. One girl urinated in my face. I enjoyed it. Now I think about penises all the time. I want to have a penis used on me by a woman, but I keep thinking how a nice hot real one would be. What's wrong with me? I like to French girls. At the same time, I still want some penises in my butt...."
The fantasy of anal-intercourse, both homosexual and heterosexual, presents other attractive ideas to those who may have never attempted it or whose experience has been less than they would have desired. For those with conflicts about any sexual contact with another, sodomy offers the opportunity of a more impersonal type lovemaking than regular coitus, oral relations or mutual masturbation. The partners do not face each other. There is less embarrassment, less chance for the partner to see grimaces and expressions one might be ashamed of. The identity of the partner is blurred, even the sex is blurred. Pederasty itself, as an act, provides the opportunity for additional fancy while in flagrento delicto.
Analerotic fantasy is further stirred by the emphasis of the attractively configured nates of the female on T-V, in the movies, in advertising, in art. The similarity of a naked buttocks to the naked breasts is often played up in erotic art and photography. Some very daring dresses with extremely low backs even expose reverse cleavage.
Almost all "glamor" and pin-up photography emphasizes the buttocks of the model as much as the breasts. Male "physique" photography puts even more emphasis on the hindquarters. Only recently, it was against the law to deal in photographs revealing the naked genitalia of either sex. As a result, the very reverse of the intent of the law, it may be that this limitation has been a contributing cause to anal-erotic fantasy and ultimately, sodomistic acts. Since the genitalia was a forbidden subject for exposure, the photographers were forced to play-up the other erotically attractive portions of the body.
We often find people with a desire to place the penis between the breasts of a female and perform copulative movements therein. It is entirely possible that this desire may be influenced by an actual wish to place the penis between the buttocks for pedicatio. The breasts may be selected subconsciously (or consciously) as a substitute because of the taboo that is felt concerning anal intercourse.
Quite often, of course, fantasy is carried on into reality, the fantasy is only a prelude to the real thing. For others, those who fear interpersonal relations or a particular type of act on moral or physical grounds, the fantasy is the principal form of expression, sometimes resulting in masturbation. Before going into Philip's background and childhood environment, I will quote the two letters that this disturbed young man handed to me:

"I like to be humiliated by my master, ridiculed and occasionally beaten if I have done anything wrong. Of course my body belongs to my master and is his to use in whatever way he desires. My mouth and my ass belong to him and I will take whatever he wished to give to me in those orifices. I will do anything to please him.

Letter No. 2
"They woke me up in the middle of the night and led me by the chain around my neck outside the barn to a grassy plot behind it. There were two trees about 50 feet apart and I was tied spread eagle between them. Then they took a rope and attached it to the chain around my balls and pulled it so that they stretched taut. They attached the cord to a stake in the ground which was about three feet in front of me. My arms and legs were stretched as far apart as humanly possible. The trees to which I was tied were small trees that moved with the breeze so that I was constantly being pulled and stretched in every direction. They left me alone like that for about 45 minutes.
"The night was pitch black and there was no light except for the moon which was hidden by the barn. It was about 70 degrees so that I wasn't cold at all, in fact, I was so content that I fell asleep. It was so peaceful to be tied and bound up and I just was so relaxed that I fell asleep.
"I was awakened by the crack of a cat-of-nine tails on my butt. Tony was standing in front of me dressed in cowboy pants with the front cut out so that his penis and balls were exposed (that's how I recognized him) because he was also hooded with black leather hood. He wore a tight black leather shirt that zipped up the side and was cut open at the neck down to his waist and small chains went from each buttonhole from his waist to his neck.
"He whipped my ass with the cat-o-nine tails and then passed it over my penis gently until it began to throb with excitement. He took a small piece of leather cord and wrapped it around my erect penis until all that was visible was the head. The cord was wrapped tightly because it stopped me from coming too quickly. He began then to spit his sweet saliva in my mouth and on my face so that it dripped down my face to my chest. He rubbed his leather all over my body so that I tingled with excitement and groaned and begged for more and more.
"I can remember even crying and sobbing for more and more. I had never been in such ecstasy before. I pleaded with him to ram it up my ass again, harder and harder, to use all the force he could, and I would do anything, ANYTHING to please him and his friends. He told me that before the night was through, I would be giving them all the pleasure they wanted, and he said I'd be doing things I never dreamed had existed."
Philip seemed hesitant to talk about himself after I read the two letters, and he asked to also submit information on his background in writing. The more revealing passages follow:
"I am 5'7", 130 lbs., blond, slim, blue eyes. I am an actor, but have a bachelor's degree in finance. I work in the stock market at the moment. I have one sister who is 6 years older than I am. We have always gotten along well together and been great pals.
"My father is sort of the typical American dad, loves baseball, sports, big business, success, etc. I was always a failure to him, being a small sickly child. I always liked delicate things, although I was also known as a little devil. I preferred dress-ups to sports.
"I perpetually got into trouble when I was young. I was expelled twice in grammar school for lewdness, once when I was only 9 years old (I had written FUCK on a blackboard) and once when I was 11 (I drew a picture of a man and a woman fucking and I passed it around the class)....
"I always loved to dress up in women's clothes and pretend to be a woman....I sure had fun doing it. I much preferred that to going to a ball game with my dad and grandfather.
"I grew up in a neighborhood that was far beyond our means. That always had an affect on me, as all my friends always had a great deal more money than I had and they were the type that always presented their wealth to you. My friends always had a little more than I had. And I was always jealous of them....
"When I was about 13 or 14 I began this sort of voyeurism. Near my home I used to go over to a section where some new houses were being built and I used to get friendly with the workmen. In the summer months they would work without their shirts and the sight of their bodies naked from the waist up would turn me on particularly. I was especially fond of those men who had a great deal of hair on their bodies. A hairy chest and hairy arms are a thrilling sight to me.
"One of the workmen I followed around for a while and he guessed that I was interested and finally we went to the basement and there he deflowered me. What was especially important about the episode was that he used a kind of force on me. He forced himself into my ass when I resisted and cried out and I found myself liking that force. I found a certain pleasure in doing something against my will. It was his authority that I yielded to.
"In the years following I have had a growing admiration for all forms of authority. I have a great dear and admiration of the police and military and often wish that I could be arrested for something just to feel their authority over me. Conversely I also have a great contempt for authority and I always try to break as many rules of authority as I can. I despise authority because of its cruelty (and yet I admire it for that very reason)."
COMMENT: The similarity between this case and that of Gilbert in the preceding chapter, begins and ends with the wearing of women's clothes for a short period during childhood. Philip did not become a transvestite. He became an extremely worried young man, deeply concerned over his unnatural desires for homosexual mastery and passive sodomy.
Philip could not give free reign to these desires and enjoy them as Gilbert did. He became a tortured individual, plagued with flights of fantasy that went far beyond the simple act of pederasty that he had experienced as a young teenager.
The predisposition to passive homosexuality was clearly present. He had never been able to please his demanding father, so he gave up trying at a very early age. The only thing left to do was to fight his father's authority by being the exact opposite of what the man wanted him to be.
At the same time, however, he had the strongest respect for his father as a real man. He was too weak to stand up to the authority or to be what his father wanted him to be, yet the conflicting fear-respect of the man remained with him.
The basic strength and masculinity of the nearby workmen were symbolic of his father's authority. So, if he could not please his father as a masculine youth, he could please other authoritarian male images as a "lover," a passive pederast.
In his earlier years at school, the expressions of a sexual nature that caused him trouble were undoubtedly attempts to prove himself a male, to be daring and take risks. When these failed, resulting in his punishment, they only added to the chain of circumstances that seemed doomed to make of him something less than a real man.
Philip's fantasies that he experiences now at age 28 are the most revealing insights that he provides. He is obsessed with the idea of being punished, humiliated, purged, scourged, by various forms of authoritarian images. He wants to be sodomized and urinated upon by the super masculine male model to whom he writes in England. He begs to be the man's dog-like slave, lapping at his feet.
The model is representative of Philip's father, a man whom he described to me as singularly handsome and who "probably had a pretty torrid love life on the side." Philip described his mother, on the other hand, as being "average in looks, but a wonderful woman."
The leather-jacketed bully-boy was also a symbol of authority, but one of a rebellious nature. "Tony" was the kind of rebel that Philip wished he could have been-master of the situation, dominating, able to reject parental and established authority in favor of his own brand.
While the average person may have anal fantasies of a far milder nature, in Philip's case we see the whole spectrum of associated aberrations playing a part in obsessive fantasies of sadomasochistic analism. This is an extreme case, but far from rare.
CHAPTER TEN
THE HOMOSEXUAL ROLE
The classic love act of the male homosexual throughout all of recorded history has been either active or passive sodomy. However, there are many inverts who prefer oral relations (fellatio) or mutual masturbation. Some have a complete aversion to anal-intercourse and will not perform such acts under any circumstances.
"I'm a cocksucker ... that's it," a young and effeminate 'queen' explained to me during the course of a behavioral research interview, "That other stuff is nasty! Me let a boy put it in my ass? Never! Me stick it up that filthy place? Never! You straights can think what you like. I don't run in the crowd that does that nasty stuff."
The latter point is well made. It is extremely difficult for the psychological researcher or the psychiatrist to know much about what really goes on in the gay world. It is doubtful that even an avowed and active homosexual could present any documentation as to what percentage of male inverts practice sodomy. However, it seems to be the opinion of most authorities as well as an overwhelming majority of all the homosexuals I have talked with, that pederasty is the most frequent form of sexual relation encountered.
Of particular interest in backing this up was the research project of Dr. Evelyn Hooker, Research Associate in Psychology at UCLA. The 1961 report, sponsored partly by federal funds, contained a survey conducted among 253 VD patients who had become infected through homosexual activities.
This survey, as I reported in THE HOMOSEXUAL EXPLOSION, "provides an enlightening sampling of the preferred homoerotic acts among men. Only 5.5% of those questioned admitted to the practice of fellatio within a specified period of time, while all admitted to participating in anal intercourse or pederasty during the same time."
Another interesting aspect of my research into homosexual practices was that most inverts do not have an established active or passive preference in anal-intercourse. While there are some extremely masculine types who insist that they always play the inserter, and many "queens" who are psychologically attuned to the receptor role, the average homosexual seems to switch around with his partner.
The very fact that the tremendous rise in venereal disease in the U.S. is almost wholly the product of male homosexual sodomy is also a documented indication of the popularity of this practice among inverts. Morbidity statistics from available public health records also show a disproportionate number of cases where gonorrheal and other VD infections are discovered deep inside the anal canal or rectum of male patients.
Since the diseases are often hidden from sight and unknown to the infected, a promiscuous homosexual may pass it on to the genitalia of a dozen or so men, who pass it back to the anuses of others, until one infected pederast pyramids the infection to hundreds without ever knowing he has the disease himself.
And when he does fear that he may be infected anally, the decision to seek medical help is a terrifying prospect for all but the most daring and outspoken. Not only does he risk scandal or loss of job if his proclivities become public knowledge, there is the initial embarrassment of facing the self-righteous moral wrath of some strange doctor or public health medic. The difficulty of detection plus the reluctance to seek medical help among homosexual pederasts is the prime factor in the upsurge of the VD rate all over the country.
From pre-Christian times until the present, homosexual sodomy has figured prominently in the works of many great writers and artists, a number of whom were homosexuals themselves. The Greek philosopher Socrates was among the most famous of these, and was condemned in court for sodomizing and corrupting scores of young boys.
In more recent times, the noted literary Nobel laureate Andre Gide wrote an entire book defending the "natural beauty" of homosexual sodomy with his story of CORYDON. And in contemporary literature of the last decade, homosexuality among males has become as commonplace a themse as the old "eternal triangle". In many stories, the triangle is still there, in fact, but the husband's lover is a male rather than a female.
Ancient artwork uncovered in Southern Italy not long ago included baroque friezes of carved stone depicting monks and priests connected anally with each other in an almost unending "daisy-chain." One hears countless stories of pederasty performed among monks and priests in monasteries or private retreat areas; and while most of these are pure figments of erotic imaginations, there have been several major church scandals throughout the centuries where sodomy was involved.
The noted French historian and man of letters, Guillaume Apollinaire in his LA ROME DES BORGIA, provides us with a graphic picture of the most brutal homosexual sodomy among clerics of the corrupt Pope Alexander VI of the notorious Borgia family.
While noted for his many mistresses and regular court debauches, Alexander was famous for meting out the severest punishments to subordinates who were caught sinning. In this particular passage, the Borgia Pope demonstrates a streak of the grossest sadism in this connection, aided by his equally depraved son, Cesare...." a dancing girl," Apollinaire wrote, "quite confused and trembling, declared that three monks had been caught in the act of pederasty in the vineyard. The Pope, who did not at once understand, ordered the three minks to be brought inside. Soon the monks were humbling themselves before the Pope, prostrate on their knees, their foreheads at the feet of Alexander. The Pope ordered them to repeat the scandalous act in the banquet hall, filled with shame, they declined, acquiescing in the acceptance of whatever severe form of expiation they might have to endure. Alexander used soft words and threats, but to no avail.
"Cesare approached him and whispered something in his ear. Alexander ordered the lights to be put out, and in the almost complete darkness commanded the monks to obey. In the night, he said, only God could see them, or his Surrogate on earth. In order to be able to forgive their sin is was necessary for His Holiness to know exactly in what position they had been found: otherwise he could not judge them. He promised them absolution immediately afterwards. Slowly the monks seemed to regain their self-assurance and they accepted the sanction which His Holiness imposed upon them.
"All this time the guests were silent. There was no reason to be impatient. Bodies intertwined, connexions were being made. No sound was heard except the creaking of the high chairs of the excited guests and occasional subdued laughter. They knew that Cesare was going to light the lamps again. Masses of sweet-scented flowers seemed to charge the hall with a voluptuous atmosphere. The hall was adorned like an ancient temple.
"La Vanezza rose and, climbing on a chair, closed the curtains of a niche containing a statue of the Madonna and an ever-burning lamp, so as to hide the coming spectacle from the Virgin's sight. Alexander ordered the monks to close their eyes. While they did so, Cesare entered suddenly with the lights, revealing to the eyes of the guests the 'shame of the flesh,' to quote the Book of Ecclesiastes. Suddenly a clamor mounted amid the joyous cries of the spectators. It came from the mouths of the desperate monks who, contorted with agony, were bathed in their own blood. Their elbows, their knees, their hands, slithered on the red, slippery floor.
"With two strokes of his dagger, Cesare had severed them asunder with the same ease as he would have cut the Gordian knot. Cesare announced cynically, dagger in hand: 'They shall perish-there where they have sinned!'
"He was applauded.
"An orgy took possession of the guests around the table...."
From this point, Apollinaire describes what is known among 'swinging" circles today as a group grope. The game was called Qui trouve prend (Finders keepers). In the dark, the guests felt each others' naked bodies and genitalia, and if able to identify the person, were allowed to perform pederasty or some other sex act with that individual.
But all of this is history and semi-fiction at best. In order to understand more clearly the anal-erotic acts practiced today, and the way in which they are accomplished, I present the following report:
BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW (11):
THREE HOMOSEXUALS TALK ABOUT ANAL-INTERCOURSE
I had the opportunity recently to talk at some length with three active male homosexuals, who promised to answer all my questions with complete frankness. They were:
AL: a 52-year-old physical culture addict, tall, handsome, graying hair, married, no children, owner of an educational supply house.
BOB-32 year old administrative assistant in a public agency. Like Al, he has a college degree and is a good-looking man. Never married, avowed homosexual since teenage.
RANDY-24-year-old stock clerk, blond wavy hair, outspoken and flamboyant, homosexuality dates back to age ten when seduced by adult friend of the family.
The portions of the discussion relating to the study of sodomy are reconstructed here:
DR.-Do you all tend to agree with Donald Webster Cory and others that most homosexuals who practice pederasty gain equal pleasure in the inserter or receptor role?
BOB-I can give it or take it, yes. But I think I would like to qualify this, in that when you have a serious and long-lasting affair with a person, this is particularly true. You know, two gays can live as man and wife with the distribution of responsibility along masculine-feminine lines. I work at a better job and pay the bills and cut the grass. My 'wife' cooks, cleans house, and so on. In sex, we switch it around though, because we both like to be screwed....
RANDY-Speak for yourself, dear. When I've been married, I have been deliriously content to be the receiver of my lover's luscious rod up my tail, and that's that. I find nothing better than to be deliciously Greeked by a long hard tool!
DR.-Would you consider yourself a passive pederast then?
RANDY-Indubitably, my dear.
BOB-Yes, you are. But you cruise and hang around the pubs all the time. You have your certain characteristics and others have theirs. I don't think you're in the majority if you consider all the guys, the covert, overt, married, and all.
AL-Yes, that's true, I suppose. Personally, well, I do dearly love to have it up and roll with the assault upon my posteriors, as the British say. But I'm not one to be content with masturbation. I can do that myself. Yes, I think we all get that feeling....that wonderful feeling, when we can part a beautiful pair of cheeks and gaze longingly at the pretty hole, and then push it in. Oh, Gawd, what a feeling!
DR.-I have this letter here from a man who is consulting me about his problem of homosexuality, and....
RANDY-Problem? Good heavens, how can such bliss be a problem? What does he want to do, screw women?
DR-Well, he is married and has a family. To him, it's a problem.
RANDY-I'd be rich if I had a dollar for every married man who's had his rod in my little brown hole.
BOB-Sure, we have a lot of married men at the gay bars, hanging about in the T-rooms (restrooms) and parks. But then it is a problem to some.
DR.-He wrote me this-"I have never been aware of any anal sexuality in myself. It probably has never been awakened. When I was 6 or 7,1 licked a friend's anus. This was my first sexual experience with a partner. I did not enjoy the licking-it offended my concept of hygiene. I did not enjoy being licked-was aware of the tickle but felt no stimulation. I believe that this occurred only once. Our other sexual activity was fellatio and mutual masturbation.
"Twice male partners attempted anal coitus with me. Both experiences were totally unacceptable due to pain. I attempted anal coitus with them. One experienced too much pain. The other, a confirmed homosexual, enjoyed the encounter enough to reach orgasm during our contact which was right after I masturbated him. I repeated anal-coitus with him on several occasions. It felt good to me, but it also offended my morals. This was the male who forced me into a sexual relationship for several months. He received a very great deal of satisfaction from anal-coitus-even claimed to have had wet dreams about the experience. I was greatly bothered by the experiences."
What do you think? Does it sound logical? BOB-Very much so, except that I would say he has had very few real experiences, and the conscience thing bothers him a great deal.
DR.-Yes, his experience is quite limited.
AL-In the bars ... you do meet some gays who seem ONLY interested in having a hard penis in their mouths, the oral erotic ones ... I'm sure you know what I mean, doctor. When ... you get to be my age, it can be quite a struggle to find a young boy unless he's hustling. But do you know, just last month, I met a college boy with the most glorious young body on him and I took him to my place-my wife was out of town-and he stripped down to nothing in five minutes.
When I tried to give him my ass, he became positively abusive and said he was hungry, and that was all. He knelt and sucked me off and just about drained me dry!
BOB-Yes, there are some who will do that. Oh, hell, you find all types. Some men like to beat off your cock with their hand and then grab the come in their mouth right at the end. You find all kinds of kooks. But I think 99 out of a hundred go for ass, because after all, this is the closest to intercourse you can get with a man.
DR.-You seem to be saying that coitus is what you really want, and this would imply that you want a woman. I have known homosexuals who would get pretty mad at me if I had implied just what you did.
BOB-No, no, no. Look, you've got to realize that getting it in the ass or giving it in the ass is to the homosexual what coitus is to you people. It's the comparable act. Nearly everybody, male or female, homosexual or straight, will go down on his mate. But what ... what does a normal guy think about and dream about when he's cruising for a girl? He thinks about getting it in her vagina! He wants to lay her ... the sucking and other stuff is extra. With a homosexual, it's the ass he's after.
AL-Yes ... I think that sums it up pretty well. DR.-It covers one side of the picture only, doesn't it? A normal male thinks of the female genitalia and inserting his penis therein. You think of the male buttocks ... or anus ... in a similar way. What then of the person's posterior whom you're admiring? If he returns the glance of interest, is he thinking of your hindquarters
... or of your penis IN his hindquarters? I mean among average homosexuals, whom we've agreed do not have an established polarity.
AL-There may not be what you call polarity. However, we all have our ideals, you understand. I think there are some men who I meet at a bar, who affect me one way, others the opposite. With the young boy, I told you of, oh dear, I had visions of spending the night kissing, licking, and throwing the meat to him all night long-I like that, don't you ... meat? I like to call it a white hot meat injection-and my anus would tingle just from doing that, and I would, of course, enjoy being gored by him too. Then ... oh, goodness, there are some men who can look at you and you simply feel like bending over right there for them. DO you understand what I mean, Bob?
BOB-Yeah, sure. But your being married means you go cruising and you're hot after something quick and impermanent. In my case, I want a lasting relationship and I tend to look at it differently. I want a man I can love, not just to make love to. When you get away from the flamboyancy of the bar queens-though we all go there sometimes-you want the same type relationship a man has with his wife in matters other than sex. You want a deep love, at least I do. And in that love, I want to enjoy everything with my partner. I want to give him my love and receive his. And sodomy, although I hate the word and all the connotations it has, is the principal thing we both love.
RANDY-I don't care! I just love to have a rod in my ass. I don't care what else I get from it. I can come all over the place getting it in the back, and if he wants to jerk me while he's doing it, dear, that's lovely too.
DR.-Could each of you tell me very briefly of your first experience at anal-intercourse and how you think it affected your outlook and appreciation of it?
BOB-Mine was very much like the man whose letter you read. I've always liked boys ... men. We used to play games and masturbate each other, lick each other's penises and anuses, give and receive blowjobs. When I was 13 or 14, this older boy kept trying to get it in my anus. It was no-go, but I sure liked the feel of it. Later in college, I fell in love with one of my profs who was only a little older than me. He opened me up, so to speak, and we had anal-intercourse ... among other things.
RANDY-I can't even remember last night's sometimes, unless it was something wonderful. Let's see. Oh, I was raped continually when I was young because I had the sexiest ass in the neighborhood. I know several straights who became 'ass-men' with women in later life because they used to like to slip it in me when we were kids. I would say ... that the first time I had a rod up me, I was ten or eleven. I used to flirt with this darlingly handsome man who worked at the drugstore. One night he asked me to help him close up and took me in the back and gave me some drug that relaxed me-as if I needed it-and then he greased up the little brown hole and went to work. It hurt so good! I've been a convert ever since.
AL-Oh, goodness ... where to begin. I was latent for so many years. I was married, couldn't produce children. My wife have and I had, and still do, more of an intellectual and cultural rapport than anything physical. Relations ... sexual ... between us, were never more than once a month or so. I was aware in my own mind that I was homosexual, of course, but the idea of liaisons seemed so tawdry ... until one night I was in New York on business ... I had been drinking some, and I went to the T-room at this bar near Times Square. I was all of 28 years old, and this very proper gentleman, quite handsome, reached over to feel my organ ... and zoooom! Instant erection!
Well ... opportunity had never knocked so beautifully, and I agreed to go to his apartment with him, where he applied mountains of grease to my ass and introduced me to the glories of being had. I squirmed deliciously in spite of the uncomfortable fullness of his mammoth penis. From that point on, I have never begrudged myself an occasional fling of this type, and I know all the right places to go....
COMMENT: The three differing stories here of original experiences seem fairly typical. The predisposition to homosexuality and to anal response, was obviously there and the result of early environmental factors.
For Bob and Randy, the fixation on anal-intercourse may well have been aided greatly by the first experience they had in their pre-pubertal years. The stage of normal genital-sex interest was never given time to develop. In the case of Al, it was rather like a normal male who remains a "virgin" until his mid-twenties. The opportunity for marital relations was not what Al sought. He found this some time later in a men's room.
For every homosexual pederast, the story may be different. Yet the encounters of original experience and childhood peer relations generally seems to fall into the two patterns represented here. As for adult behavior and practice, the contemporary experiences also seem to be fairly representative.
The noticeable aspect of all three men is their complete disinterest in any change or "cure." They are happy in their homosexuality and intend to stay that way. As Bob told me when I asked him if he had ever thought of trying to change, "Of course not! This is the way I am. How would you feel if some doctor told you, you'd be better off making love to men? Would you hop right on and go to it? Hell, no, you wouldn't. It's the same with us. It would be just as much of a job to get me to be heterosexual as it would be to get you to go homosexual. It just won't work."
Unfortunately, this may be largely true. The homosexual finds his sexuality such a challenge in our society that the condition is not only more firmly established, but his sex drive is probably far stronger than the average heterosexual. He is desperate to prove himself sexual, to have more and more experiences. Unless he is seriously threatened with loss of job, scandal, etc., he will do everything in his power to remain homosexual, despite the many forms of professional help available to him.
CHAPTER ELEVEN
ANAL MASTURBATION
Anal-masturbation, like interpersonal anal-intercourse, is composed of two elements-the physical and the mental. On the one hand, it might be assumed that acts of anal-masturbation are based more on true sensitivity in the anal area because a solitary masturbator has a clear choice of exciting whichever part of his body is the most sensitive.
However, the masturbator fantasies far more than one who is engaged in a sex relation with an actual person. He may choose his anus to be the recipient point of his masturbatory activities for much the same psychological reasons as he would choose it for attention by another person, or select the anus of a love partner to receive attention from him.
Some anal masturbators, for instance, will insert their fingers rectally, agitate the anus, then withdraw the fingers to lick off the fecal deposits. This would seem to indicate a narcissistic/homosexual-anal-erotic-scatophagic desire. The person loves himself, therefore, would like ideally for a love partner to be of the same sex. He is obviously anal-erotic, or he would masturbate his penis. His self-defilement is masochistically scatophagic. He wants to consume his own excrement.
In a case like this, we see all the elements present that we would find in a homosexual analinguist, or one desirous of that type experience, except that he replaces the love partner with himself. Almost any act of masturbation is a wished-for act with another person. But for a variety of reasons, the masturbator must use himself instead.
Masturbation is not abnormal. The most emotionally stable people resort to it on occasion when the love partner is unavailable. And if we can say that a certain amount of anal activity is not abnormal, then occasional anal-masturbation should not be considered abnormal either...." put the middle finger of my left hand deep into my rectum while I masturbate my clitoris," a 37-year-old mother whose husband was overseas admitted with some concern. Yet when reviewing her overall masturbatory activities, I found that there was no reason for her to be unduly alarmed. She was merely trying to imitate by herself the same things that she enjoyed doing with her husband when they were together.
The more neurotic anal-masturbators, of course, indulge excessively in this type activity and contrive all kinds of methods and utilize many different objects. Anal-vibrators are sold legally through the mails now, and are especially constructed to fit deep into the rectal canal. Dildoes and other artificial penis-like devices are used as easily in the anus as they are in the vagina.
Because of the very nature of anal-intercourse and the difficulty which extreme anal-erotics often have in finding a love partner of equal interests and intensity of drive, we might suspect that more anal-erotics are forced to masturbate than those who are primarily genital-erotic. The Kinsey reports merely referred to "enemas" and "other anal insertions," because at the time of their research anal eroticism was still almost a taboo subject. No statistics were available.
It has only been during the last few years that information of this type has received widespread general review. In his 1955 book, VARIATIONS IN SEXUAL BEHAVIOR, Dr. Caprio, for instance, quoted the graphic description of anal masturbation given to him by a 36 year old male chronic masturbator, which is rephrased here:
"Touching my anus when I masturbated greatly increased my pleasure. It was probably when I was bathing I found out I could push my finger into my rectum with no pain. I began to like this and used it to accompany my other masturbation.
"Later, I put a lot of other objects into my rectum while masturbating. They were made of something like smooth wood and pretty much the size and shape of a penis. My greatest satisfaction was to penetrate deeply, using as thick an object as possible. Sometimes I just let it stay in there and other times I worked it in and out like a penis in copulation.
"I was aroused to making a replica of my own penis. I made a wax cast of my penis in erection and filled the cast with wall plaster. I used it in my rectum a few times, but it soon lost its value and I destroyed it.
"This was significant to me of a kind of hermaphroditic intercourse. I had really tried to insert my own penis in my anus, but I found that impossible. After a fashion, I accomplished this with the replica...." I have also put into my rectum things like a length of rubber hose and a condom. I fixed the hose and rubber so I could inflate it with air or water. Warm-water enemas also give me pleasure prior to orgasm. I also discovered that if I suddenly doused my anus and genitals with cold water at the height of passion, the magnitude of the resulting orgasm was increased considerably. I did these things quite often in conjunction with my masturbation. Brutal as it might seem, to me it was like a gentle caress."
CASE STUDY (12):
CHRONIC FEMALE ANAL-MASTURBATOR
Evelyn R. is a pleasingly plump 34-year-old widow and mother of two, who consulted me about an emotional condition that she said was brought on by her "unusual sex desires." Evelyn's appearance was that of a woman who emphasized her sex appeal unnecessarily, wearing miniskirts that revealed her thighs above the stockings in almost any posture except standing straight up, as well as exhibiting erotic mannerisms intended to excite the average male.
The woman was quite sexually active with both her husband and an extra-marital lover for several years. Since her husband's death, she fell into a state of remorse, feeling that somehow her own infidelity was responsible for his demise. For three years, her only activity was autoerotic.
While married, Evelyn's husband practiced only coitus and mutual oral-intercourse with her, while her lover also pedicated her. In her masturbatory fantasies, the anal role has always been paramount, and the sensitivity and desire seemed to increase, she told me, during the three years since her husband's death.
"Both of my children are in school from 9:30 to 4:00," Evelyn explained in a written statement, unable to discuss things in person at first, "I have my own business as a free-lance speed-typist at home, so I can regulate my hours any way I want to. This has resulted in my spending half a day or more sometimes in masturbating.
"On a day when I realize that I might as well give up trying to work, and settle down to enjoy myself, I make sure that every door and window is secured first of all. I prefer to be absolutely nude at times like that, although I often find myself fingering my vulva or anus when fully dressed and otherwise occupied. I have had to watch myself lately too. I was fingering my anus and inserting my fingers one evening in the shower when my daughter came in to brush her teeth and could see right through the frosted glass door ... at least get an idea of what I was doing.
"My former lover, whom I told you about, liked to have sex in front of mirrors. When I am nude and masturbating, I like to duplicate this setting. I do it on the floor or in bed and I can watch myself in either the closet-door mirror, the one on the dresser, or both ... from the bed, that is.
"I never thought of using anything but my finger until one day I suddenly had the urge to push something much bigger up there. My lover had a very long penis which hurt me sometimes. I wanted it to hurt again. I used a candle first, which I had also used in my vagina several times but found that it did nothing for me. In my anus, it was much better. It hurt and reminded me some of Herb, except that it was unnaturally hard, unlike a penis, that is smooth and soft.
"I had heard of taking enemas and tried that. I found the experience dirty and disgusting because of the smell. I wanted the sensation at my anus. I wanted to be hurt a little, as it had been with Herb.
"One day, I broke a six-pack of empty drink bottles on the kitchen floor. As I swept up the glass, I had the strangest sensation while feeling the handle of the broom. For the first time in years, I felt I was holding something like a penis. I moved my hands up and down, pausing at the metal knob on the end. I removed the little hanger attachment from it. I became terribly excited, securing the house and undressing.
"Standing out from the mirror in my bedroom, I put the broom part along the molding of the wall by the floor. I put cooking oil on my hands and rubbed it all over the top of the broom-handle and the knob (after I had washed it thoroughly.) I bent over and positioned the knob right at my anus. It did not want to go in and hurt very much when I tried to probe it.
"Suddenly, I pushed myself back with one big shove (I was leaning over.) I screamed at the pain and thought it must have tom me apart. I was grateful to find no blood or other evidence of a tear. I was very sore, but I tried it again. The pain was furious at first. Later, the sensation of having it in me compensated for this.
"I worked up to where I could easily insert it and by reaching back I could move it in and out. I experienced climax with the help of my fingers at the front. It was still awkward, uncomfortable and not really like it had been with Herb.
"Some months later, I spent some time working on improvements. I needed some rubbers, so I ordered some things from the drugstore, disguising my voice like a man's and included a package of them in the order. The rubber would not stay on too well and had a tendency to come off inside me. Once I had to use the handle of a toothbrush to get it out of me, after which I discarded the toothbrush of course......" a year before I perfected it. What I did was to glue a lining of soft cotton around the broomstick and the knob for a distance of about ten inches. I covered this with a rubber and held it in place at the open end by wrapping very tight rubber bands around it, the little tiny ones like my daughter uses on her braces.
"I sawed off the broomstick handle from the broom itself. I worked a long time to perfect all of this, finding that the broomstick would stay securely in place at about the right level if I put the other end of it between the slats and box springs on my bed. The pressure of the springs and mattress kept it in place. This was right in front of the mirror on the closet door.
"When I got on my knees and elbows, I found I could back into it so that it penetrated just right. By moving my buttocks back and forth, the sensation was so much like I was with Herb that it was unbelievable! I adjusted the door to the closet so that the mirror showed just about the six inch end of it penetrating me. It looks exactly like a penis with a rubber on it, and it feels just like a naked penis.
"I secrete heavily when I am aroused, so I put towels or newspapers under me to catch the drippings from my vagina. I usually agitate my front part with my finger, but I can also have a good and a very strong climax sometime by just working the 'penis' in and out violently for a few minutes.
"I have been getting much worse lately, in that I do this once a day at least. I also scream and cry out such words as, "Fuck me, Herb ... oh, damn you, fuck my ass hard!" It is not within my character to talk like this, and I have never done it with either Herb or my husband. I know I will have to go to an institution soon if I can't get help....
COMMENT: Evelyn was troubled by the eternal conflict that plagues any unfaithful spouse subject to guilt feelings. Te act of pederasty took on a special meaning for her. Undoubtedly, she thought it taboo either in or out of marriage. But since her extra-marital affair was also a forbidden act, pederasty only added to the attractiveness-of-evil that permeated the whole relationship.
At the same time, she did enjoy the physical sensations of passive pederasty. The pleasure/pain combination appealed to her even more as it provided an element of punishment for her 'sins" at the same time it brought her erotic gratification. The anal-response, because of these factors, increased in intensity.
When Evelyn's husband died, she regretted her affair very deeply, vowed, in fact, not to become involved with another male again, even though she was legally free to do so. The anal eroticism then became self-centered and she resorted to anal forms of masturbation to achieve the same gratification-punishment as before.
Counseling has aided her greatly to return to the road of normal sexuality.
CHAPTER TWELVE
SODOMY AND THE LAW
Anal-intercourse that involves the use of the anus of one partner and the mouth or penis of another constitutes a serious crime in probably 49 of the 50 state in the U.S.A. No distinction is drawn between the sexes or marital status of those involved. Sodomy, both homosexual and heterosexual, and even when indulged in voluntarily by man and wife is criminal activity everywhere except in Illinois, according to the latest interpretation of various state law , all of which are listed in the legal appendix following this chapter.
While this information may come as a shock to some, it is nevertheless a fact that has been with us almost since the beginning of Western civilization. "Coital positions were regulated by informs us, "and the early Catholic codes conolder codes," the Kinsey report on the female considered the use of any except the prone position with the male above as a matter for confession and, in the day when the church's authority was backed by the civil administration, as a matter for punishment."
Under some state laws, sodomizing a wife can theoretically result in life imprisonment today.
And lest anyone think that such antiquated laws are never enforced between married spouses, there are many documented cases of prosecution and conviction to show otherwise.
There are many cases on record, for instance, where a wife willingly submitted to anal intercourse, only to charge her husband later with criminal sodomy after getting angry at him for something else. As I mentioned before, sodomy, in the legal definition may include oral relations and many other kinds of acts described as "unnatural" by law and legal precedent. But it always covers anal intercourse. Some few states, however, use such terms a buggery and unnatural-acts to include anal intercourse.
In researching historical archives, I find that heterosexual sodomy has been prosecuted to varying degrees for hundred of years. Instances of punishment for homosexual pederasty are constantly interlaced with cases involving a male and female, many where the partners were married.
Pisanus Fraxi in his classic CATENA LIBRORUM TACENDORUM states that in Venice: "In 1458 one Nicolaus Longo de Candida, who was accused by his wife on the 9th of August of having thus abused her, was on the 16th of the same month released from prison. ... Nevertheless Jacobinus A. Maietis, a sodomite "cum feminis," was in 1464 condemned to four years' imprisonment, and banishment afterwards "
In 1631, Mervin, Lord Audley Earl of Castle Haven was beheaded at London's Tower Hill after being convicted of "rape and sodomy at one time with his own wife," according to an eight volume account of his trial printed in 1699.
The German physician Eulenburg noticed in hi Clinical Handbook of the 1800's that he had cases of his own "experience, in which women brought actions for divorce on the ground that the husband, in order to avoid offspring, practiced pedicatio only."
And in SEXUAL BEHAVIOR: Psycho-Legal Aspects, the noted attorney Donald R. Brenner told in 1961 of a case "wherein a husband performed anal-intercourse on his wife with her full consent. She then reported the incident to the authorities and the husband was arrested for performing an unnatural sex act."
Only a few states list "crime against nature" (sodomy) as a ready-made grounds for divorce. However, since the act is a felony in most jurisdictions it has figured as grounds for divorce, and continues to do so, in many cases each year.
The major problem in getting the laws changed is that these particular statutes also regulate the legal standing of homosexual behavior, something few state legislators care to go on record as legalizing. Critics charge that the bill that changed all of this in the 1961 Illinois legislature was 'sneaked through" in an omnibus crime law reformation bill modeled on the suggestion of The American Law Institute.
Homosexual, religious and civil-rights organizations hailed the Illinois action as a major victory for the "rights of homosexuals" everywhere. Yet only three years later, despite a tremendous lobbying campaign by these organizations and private citizens in New York, the legislature in Albany turned down any change in their sodomy laws by an overwhelming majority.
While it would be almost impossible for even a legal expert to judge how the laws will be interpreted, enforced or applied in the future in each and every state (bearing in mind also that acts of anal-intercourse may be punished less severely in most areas by applying ordinances against "lascivious acts," etc., which are misdemeanors,) a close look at the wording of each state's law in regard to this subject, may be of interest to the lay reader.

LEGAL APPENDIX
The following laws for each of the 50 states, The District of Columbia, the Federal Government and the U.S. Military, were extracted from the Criminal Codes (or comparable document) of each jurisdiction involved. They were in full force and effect as of January 1,1968.
ALABAMA-Crimes and Offense :
T14 Sec. 106. PUNISHMENT OF CRIME AGAINST NATURE. Any person who commits a crime against nature, either with mankind or with any beast, shall on conviction be imprisoned in the penitentiary for not less than two nor more than ten years.
ALASKA-Alaska Statutes:
Sec. 11.40.120. UNNATURAL CRIMES. A person who commits sodomy, or the crime against nature, or has unnatural carnal copulation by means of the mouth, or otherwise, either with a beast or human being, upon conviction, is punishable by imprisonment in the penitentiary years. (Sec. 65-9-10 ACLA 1949.) for not less than one year nor more than ten Requisites of Crime. The actual penetration of the virile member into any orifice of the human body except the vaginal opening of a female is sufficient for the establishment of the crime under this section. State v. Start (ore.,) 132 P. 512, construing the Oregon statute.
Compulsion or force is not an element of the crime of sodomy; State v. Weitzel (Ore.,) 69P. (2d) 958, construing the Oregon statute.
ARIZONA-Criminal Code:
Sec. 13-651. CRIME AGAINST NATURE: PUNISHMENT. A person who commit the infamous crime against nature, with mankind or animal, shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for not less than five nor more than twenty years.
ARKANSAS-Criminal Offenses:
Sec. 41-813. SODOMY OR BUGGERY. PENALTY : Every person convicted of sodomy, or buggery shall be imprisoned in the penitentiary for a period not less than one (1) nor more than twenty-one (21) years. (Acts 1955, No. 128, Sec. 1, p. 301.)
CALIFORNIA-Penal Code:
Sec. 286. Every person who is guilty of the infamous crime against nature, committed with mankind or with any animal, is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison not less than one year.
Sec. 288a. Any person participating in an act of copulating the mouth of one person with the sexual organ or another is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for not exceeding fifteen years, or by imprisonment in the county jail not to exceed one year....
Pursuant to Section 290 of the Penal Code, individuals convicted of the above crimes, as well as those convicted of other sex offenses, are required to register with the sheriff or police chief of the locality in which they reside.
COLORADO-Crimes and Punishment:
40-2-31. CRIME AGAINST NATURE: The infamous crime against nature, or the attempt to commit said crime, either with man or beast, or any unnatural carnal copulation committed, or the attempt to commit any unnatural carnal copulation per anus or per os or in any other way whatsoever shall subject the offender to be imprisoned in the penitentiary for a term of not less than one year and not more than fourteen years.
39-10-18 ... Each and every person who may be convicted of the crime of ... sodemy or the crime against nature ... shall be ... incapable of holding any office of honor.
CONNECTICUT-Crimes:
Sec. 53-216. BESTIALITY AND SODOMY: Any person who has carnal copulation with any beast, or who has carnal knowledge of any man, against the order of nature, unless forced or under fifteen years of age, shall be imprisoned in the State Prison for not more than thirty years. (1949.)
DELAWARE-Crimes
Tll-831. CRIMES AGAINST NATURE: Whoever commits the crime against nature is guilty of a felony, and shall be fined not more than $1,000 and imprisoned not more than three years.
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA:
22-3501 and 22-3502. Every person who shall be convicted of taking into his or her mouth or anus the sexual organ of any other person or animal or who shall be convicted of placing his or her sexual organ in the mouth or anus of any other person or animal or who shall be convicted of having carnal copulation in an opening of the body except sexual parts of another person shall be fined not more than $1,000 or be imprisoned for a period not exceeding ten years.
FLORIDA-Statutes:
800.01.
CRIME AGAINST NATURE: PUNISHMENT. Whosoever commits the abominable and detestable crime against nature, either with mankind or with beast, shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison not exceeding twenty years.
GEORGIA-Code:
Sec. 26-5901. SODOMY DEFINED. Sodomy is the carnal knowledge and connection against the order of nature, by man with man, or in the same unnatural manner with woman.
Sec. 26-5902. PUNISHMENT OF SODOMY. The punishment of sodomy shall be as follows:
(b)Where committed on a person sixteen years or more, by sentence to the penitentiary for not less than one year nor more than ten years;
(c) Where previous conviction or plea of guilty of the offense of sodomy is alleged in the indictment and proven on the trial, by sentence to the penitentiary for not less than ten nor more than thirty years.
HAWAII-Statutes:
Sec. 309-34. SODOMY DEFINED: PENALTY. Whoever commits sodomy, that is, the crime against nature, either with mankind or any beast, shall be fined not more than $1,000 and imprisoned at hard labor not more than twenty years. (Revised Laws of Hawaii 1955, p. 1549.)
IDAHO-Crimes and Punishments:
Sec. 18-6605. CRIME AGAINST NATURE: PUNISHMENT. Every person who is guilty of the infamous crime against nature, committed with mankind or with any animal, is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison not less than five years.
ILLINOIS-Criminal Code:
(No part of the Criminal Code prohibits any sexual acts performed in private between consenting adults, as long a prostitution or incest are not involved.)
INDIANA-Criminal Offenses:
Sec. 10-4221. SODOMY. Whoever commits the abominable and detestable crime against nature with mankind or beast; or whoever entices, allures, instigates or aids any person under the age of twenty-one (21) years to commit masturbation or self-pollution, shall be deemed guilty of sodomy, and, on conviction, shall be fined not less than one hunderd dollars ($100) nor more than one thousand dollars ($1,000,) to which may be added imprisonment in the state prison not less than two (2) years nor more than fourteen (14) years. (Acts 1905.)
IOWA-Criminal Law:
705. SODOMY. 705.1. DEFINITION. Whoever shall have carnal copulation on any opening of the body except sexual parts, with another human being, or shall have carnal copulation with a beast, shall be deemed guilty of sodomy.
705.2.
PUNISHMENT. Any person who shall commit sodomy, shall be imprisoned in the penitentiary not more than ten years.
KANSAS-Crimes and Punishment:
Sec. 21-907. CRIME AGAINST NATURE: PENALTY. Every person who shall be convicted of the detestable and abominable crime against nature, committed with mankind or with beast, shall be punished by confinement and hard labor not exceeding ten years (Source of law from 1855.)
LOUISIANA-Criminal Code:
14 Sec. 89. CRIME AGAINST NATURE. Crime against nature is the unnatural carnal copulation by a human being with another of the same or opposite sex or with an animal. Emission is not necessary, and when committed by a human being with another, the use of the genital organ of one of the offenders of whatever sex is sufficient to constitute the crime.
Whoever commits the crime against nature shall be fined not more than two thousand dollars, or imprisoned, with or without hard labor, for not more than five years or both.
MAINE-Sexual Crimes:
C134 Sec. 3. CRIME AGAINST NATURE. Whoever commits the crime against nature, with mankind or with a beast, shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than one year nor more than ten years.
(Consent is no defense to a prosecution for sodomy, thus distinguishing the prosecution from one for rape. State v. Langelier, 136 Me 320, 8A (2d) 897.)

MARYLAND-Crimes and Punishment:
Art. 27 Sec. 553. SODOMY GENERALLY. Every person convicted of the crime of sodomy shall be sentenced to the penitentiary for not less than one year nor more than ten years.
Art. 27 Sec. 554. UNNATURAL OR PERVERTED SEXUAL PRACTICES. Every person who shall be convicted of taking into his or her mouth the sexual organ of any other person or animal, or who shall be convicted of placing his or her sexual organ in the mouth of any other person or animal, or who shall be convicted of committing any other unnatural or perverted sexual practice with any other person or animal, shall be fined not more than one thousand dollars ($1,000,) or be imprisoned in jail or in the house of correction or in the penitentiary for a period not exceeding ten years, or shall be both fined and imprisoned within the limits above described in the discretion of the court.
And in any indictment for the commission of any of the acts, hereby declared to be offenses, it shall not be necessary to set forth the particular unnatural or perverted sexual practice with the commission of which the defendant may be charged, nor to set forth the particular manner in which said unnatural or perverted sexual practice was committed, but it shall be sufficient if the indictment set forth that the defendant committed a certain unnatural and perverted sexual practice with a person or animal, as the case may be.

MASSACHUSETTS
Crime against Chastity, Morality, Decency, and Good Order. c272 Sec. 34. SODOMY AND BUGGERY. Whoever commits the abominable and detestable crime against nature, either with mankind or with a beast, shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for not more than twenty years.
C272 Sec. 35. UNNATURAL AND LASCIVIOUS ACTS. Whoever commits any unnatural and lascivious act with another per on shall be punished by a fine of not less than one hundred nor more than one thousand dollars or by imprisonment in the state prison for not more than five years or in jail or in a house of correction for not more than two and one-half years.
MICHIGAN-Crime :
Sec. 28.355 PUNISHMENT: SEXUALLY DELINQUENT PERSON. Any person who shall commit the abominable and detestable crime against nature either with mankind or with any animal shall be guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment in the state prison not more than 15 years (or if such a person was at the time of the said offense a sexually delinquent person, may be punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for an indeterminate term, the minimum of which shall be one day and the maximum of which shall be life.)
MINNESOTA-Crimes, Criminals:
Sec. 617.14. SODOMY. A person who carnally knows in any manner any animal or bird, or carnally knows any male or female person by the anus or by or with the mouth, or voluntarily submits to such carnal knowledge; or attempts sexual intercourse with a dead body, is guilty of sodomy, and is punishable with imprisonment in the state prison for not more than twenty years, and any sexual penetration, however slight, shall be sufficient to complete the crime.

MISSISSIPPI-Crimes:
Sec. 2413. UNNATURAL INTERCOURSE. Every person who shall be convicted of the detestable and abominable crime against nature committed with mankind or with a beast, shall be punished by imprisonment in the penitentiary for a term of not more than ten years.
MISSOURI-Crimes and Punishment:
Sec. 563.230. THE ABOMINABLE AND DETESTABLE CRIME AGAINST NATURE. PENALTY: Every person who shall be convicted of the detestable and abominable crime against nature, committed with mankind or with beast, with the sexual organs or with the mouth, shall be punished by imprisonment in the penitentiary not less than two years.

MONTANA-Revised Codes of Montana, 1947: Sec. 94-4118. Every person who is guilty of the infamous crime against nature, committed with mankind or with any animal, is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for not less than five years.
Sec. 94-4119. Any sexual penetration, however slight, is sufficient to complete the crime against nature.
NEBRASKA-Crimes and Punishment:
Sec. 28-919. "SODOMY" DEFINED: PENALTY. Whoever has carnal copulation with a beast, or in an opening of the body except sexual parts with another human being, shall be guilty of sodomy and shall be imprisoned in the penitentiary not more than twenty years.
NEVADA-Crimes and Punishments:
201.190. CRIME AGAINST NATURE: PUNISHMENT: LIMITATIONS ON PA-
ROLE, PROBATION. 1. The infamous crime against nature, either with man or beast, shall subject the offender to be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for a term not less than one year, and which may extend to life....
NEW HAMPSHIRE-Crimes and Offenses:
579:9 LASCIVIOUS ACTS. Whoever commits any unnatural and lascivious act with another person shall be imprisoned not more than five years, or fined not more than one thousand dollars, or both.
(Under 173:3, a sex psychopath inquiry must be made for a charge under, inter alia, 579:9.)
NEW JERSEY-N.J.S.A.:
2-A: 143-1. Sodomy, or the infamous crime against nature, committed with man or beast, is a high misdemeanor, and shall be punished by a fine of not more than $5,000, or by imprisonment for not more than twenty years, or both.
NEW MEXICO-Criminal Code (Law changed in 1963):
40A-9-6. SODOMY. Sodomy consists of a person intentionally taking into his or her mouth or anus the sexual organ of any other person or animal or intentionally placing his or her sexual organ to the mouth or anus of any other person or animal, or coitus with an animal. Any penetration, however slight, is sufficient to complete the crime of sodomy. Both parties may be principals.
Whoever commits sodomy is guilty of a third degree felony. ($5,000 fine, two years imprisonment, or both.)
NEW YORK-Penal Code:
Sec. 690. CRIME AGAINST NATURE: SODOMY. A person who carnally knows any male or female person by the anus or by or with the mouth, or voluntarily submits to such carnal knowledge, under circumstances not amounting to sodomy in the first degree is guilty of a misdemeanor. Sec. 14-177. CRIME AGAINST NATURE. If any person shall commit the abominable and detestable crime against nature, with mankind or beast, he shall be imprisoned in the State's prison not less than five, nor more than sixty years.
NORTH DAKOTA-Century Code:
12-22-07. "SODOMY" DEFINED-PUNISHMENT. Every person who carnally knows in any manner any animal or bird, or carnally knows any male or female person by the anus or by or with the mouth, or voluntarily submits to such carnal knowledge, or attempts sexual intercourse with a dead body, is guilty of sodomy and shall be punished by imprisonment in the penitentiary for not less them one year nor more than ten years, or in the county jail for not more than one year. Any sexual penetration however slight is sufficient to complete this
OHIO-Crime :
Sec. 2905.44. SODOMY. No person shall have carnal copulation with a beast, or in any opening of the body except the sexual parts, with another human being.
Whoever violates this section is guilty of sodomy and shall be imprisoned not less than one nor more than twenty years.

OREGON-Crimes and Punishments:
Sec. 167.040. SODOMY; PROOF NEEDED. (1.) Any person who commits sodomy or the crime against nature, or any act or practice of sexual perversity, either with mankind or beast, or sustains osculatory relations with the private parts of any person, or permits such relations to be sustained with his private parts, shall be punished upon conviction by imprisonment in the penitentiary for not more than 15 years.
(2) Proof of actual penetration into the body is sufficient to sustain an indictment for a crime against nature.
PENNSYLVANIA-Penal Code:
Sec. 4501. SODOMY. Whoever carnally knows in any manner any animal or bird, or carnally knows any male or female person by the anus of by or with the mouth, or whoever voluntarily submits to such carnal knowledge, is guilty of sodomy, a felony, and upon conviction thereof, shall be sentenced to pay a fine not exceeding five thousands dollars ($5,000,) or to undergo imprisonment, by separate or solitary confinement at labor, not exceeding ten (10) years, or both.
Any sexual penetration, however slight, shall be sufficient to complete the offense of sodomy. 1939, June 24, P.L. 872, Sec. 501.
RHODE ISLAND-Criminal Offenses:
11-10-1 ABOMINABLE AND DETESTABLE CRIME AGAINST NATURE. Every person who shall be convicted of the abominable and detestable crime against nature, either with mankind or with any beast, shall be imprisoned not exceeding twenty (20) years nor less than seven (7) years.
SOUTH CAROLINA-1962 South Carolina Code of Laws:
Sec. 16-412. BUGGERY. Whoever shall commit the abominable crime of buggery, whether with mankind or with beast, shall, on conviction, be guilty of felony and shall be imprisoned in the Penitentiary for five years or shall pay a fine of not less than five hundred dollars, or both, at the discretion of the court.
SOUTH DAKOTA-South Dakota Code of 1939:
Sec. 13.1716. CRIME AGAINST NATURE. Every person who is guilty of the detestable and abominable crime against nature committed with mankind of with a beast is punishable by imprisonment in the State Penitentiary not exceeding ten years.
Any sexual penetration, however slight, is sufficient to complete the crime against nature.
TENNESSEE-Criminal Offenses:
39-707. CRIMES AGAINST NATURE: PENALTY. Crimes against nature, either with mankind or any beast, are punishable by imprisonment in the penitentiary not less than five years nor more than fifteen years.
(40-2712 makes offender "infamous" and disenfranchises him.)
TEXAS-Penal Code:
Art. 524. SODOMY. Whoever has carnal copulation with a beast, or in an opening of the body, except sexual parts, with another human being, or whoever shall use his mouth on the sexual parts of another human being for the purpose of having carnal copulation, or who shall voluntarily permit the use of his own sexual parts in a lewd or lascivious manner by any minor, shall be guilty of sodomy, and upon conviction thereof shall be deemed guilty of a felony and shall be confined in the penitentiary not less than two (2) nor more than fifteen (15) years.
UTAH-Penal Code:
75-53-22. SODOMY. UNNATURAL AND DETESTABLE PRACTICES. Every person who is guilty of sodomy or any other detestable and abominable crime against nature, committed with mankind or with any animal with either the sexual organs or the mouth, is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison not less than three years nor more than twenty years.
VERMONT-Crimes and Criminal Procedure:
(A careful review of the laws of this state indicates that anal-intercourse may not be punishable, while fellatio convictions may carry a one to five year sentence.)
VIRGINIA-Code of Virginia:
Sec. 18. 1-212 CRIMES AGAINST NATURE. If any person shall carnally know in any manner any brute animal, or carnally know any male or female person by the anus or by or with the mouth, or voluntarily submit to such carnal knowledge, he or she hall be guilty of a felony and shall be confined in the penitentiary not less than one year nor more than three years.
WASHINGTON-Crimes and Punishments: 9.79.100 SODOMY. PENALTIES. Every person who shall carnally know in any manner any animal or bird; or who shall carnally know any male or female person by the anus or with the mouth or tongue; or who shall voluntarily submit to such carnal knowledge; or who shall be guilty of sodomy and shall be punished as follows:
(1) When such act is committed upon a child under the age of fifteen years, by imprisonment in the state penitentiary for not more than twenty years.
(2) In all other cases by imprisonment in the state penitentiary for not more than ten years.
WEST VIRGINIA-Crimes:
Sec. 6068 (13). CRIMES AGAINST NATURE. If any person shall carnally know in any manner any brute animal, or by or with the mouth, or voluntarily submit to such carnal knowledge, he or she shall be guilty of a felony, and, upon conviction thereof, shall be confined in the penitentiary not less than one nor more than ten years. (May be applicable to anal acts.)
WISCONSIN-Criminal Code:
944.17 SEXUAL PERVERSION. Whoever does either of the following may be fined not more than $500 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both:
(1) Commits an abnormal act of sexual gratification involving the sex organ of one person an the mouth or anus of another; or
(2) Commits an act of sexual gratification involving his sex organ and the sex organ, mouth or anus of an animal.
WYOMING-Statutes:
Sec. 6-98. SODOMY. Whoever commits the abominable and detestable crime against nature, by having carnal knowledge of a man or beast; or who being a male carnally knows any man or woman through the anus, or in any other manner contrary to nature; and whoever entices, allures, instigates or aids any person under the age of twenty-one (21) years to commit masturbation of self-pollution, is guilty of sodomy, and shall be imprisoned in the penitentiary for not more than ten years.
Sec. 7-265. SAME. In case of rape or crime against nature-It shall not be necessary to prove emission to convict any person of the crime of rape, or the crime against nature.
UNITED STATES-U.S. Code:
(No part of the U.S. Code prohibits sodomistic acts performed by consenting adults in private. However, in the case that such an act is performed on a government reservation or enclave which is located within the boundaries of a state, Sec. 13 requires that appropriate state laws shall apply with full force and effect, although a person so charged will be tried in a Federal Court and prosecuted by the Federal government under the applicable state laws.)
U.S. MILITARY-Uniform Code of Military Justice:
Art. 125. SODOMY-Discussion: This article defines sodomy as engaging in unnatural carnal copulation, either with another person of the same or opposite sex, or with an animal. Any penetration, however slight is sufficient to complete the offense and emission is not necessary.
It is unnatural carnal copulation for a person to take into his or her mouth or anus the sexual organ of another person or animal; or to place his or her sexual organ in the mouth or anus of another person or of an animal; or to have carnal copulation in any opening of the body, except the sexual parts, with another person; or to have carnal copulation in any opening of the body of an animal.
Proof: That the accused has engaged in unnatural carnal copulation with a certain other person or with an animal as alleged.
Maximum Punishment:
Dishonorable discharge. Forfeit of all pay and allowances. Up to five years confinement at hard labor.
