   The Excalibur was a freak show.  A three-ring circus of misfits,
outcasts and borderline savants.  Commander Elizabeth Shelby wondered --
not for the first time, or even the second -- what admiral she'd pissed off
to wind up under Calhoun's command.

   McHenry, the navigator, was lost in la-la land half the time.  A Mugato
-- a freakin' Mugato!  -- was a security officer.  And she didn't want to
think about the stow-away, former Thallonian royal Si Cwan who'd somehow
become an official member of the crew.

   Shelby rubbed her forehead.  She'd tolerate the "eccentricities" of her
crewmates, but she'd be damned if she'd surrender.
