A sequel to Dougplayful's story, "Carol Breckwith Interviews Strip Club Owner." A LETTER TO CAROL BRECKWITH by Joe Doe ****************************** TEXAS STATE PRISON FOR WOMEN Rio Bollo, Texas Randy M. Flucker, Warden 3 June Dear Ms. Breckwith: I spoke with Judge Hawthorn regarding your letter, and he has agreed to your request for administrative detention for a period of 8-12 weeks. For your own safety, your incarceration will require a plausible cover story. Judge Hawthorn has agreed to cite you for contempt of court, supposedly because of your refusal to name your sources to the grand jury that is investigating the insurance scandal your paper recently revealed. Since we do not have facilities for the initial booking of prisoners at this institution, the local police will take you into custody and prepare your arrest record, with mug shots and fingerprints. The exact length of your stay at the local jail will depend on its particular transport schedule, but, rest assured, eventually you will be transferred here. As you know, it is very expensive to hold someone in a maximum security prison. Before Judge Hawthorn authorizes your release, therefore, he will require you to reimburse the state fully for the cost of your incarceration. This presents something of a conundrum, since your money and valuables will be taken from you when you are booked, and state law prohibits prisoners from conducting fund transfers while incarcerated. Since the cost of your imprisonment will far exceed the scanty wages paid for jobs within the prison, I have arranged for your immediate participation in the Work Release Program. Work Release is a privilege, and only qualified inmates are allowed to participate. A job will be selected for you, based on your attributes and abilities. Note that, in some cases, an interview or audition with your prospective employer may be required. In my experience, many college-educated inmates are surprised to find themselves evaluated on the basis of their physical abilities and attributes rather than on their academic backgrounds. White collar inmates are often embarrassed when they encounter friends that they knew before their incarceration while they are performing tasks that they might previously have considered beneath them. The range of jobs available to you will be further restricted by the necessity for securing employment profitable enough to cover the enormous daily expense of your incarceration. Please know that all these jobs are honest work, and our ultimate goal is rehabilitation. Your new work assignment will be designed to teach you structure, discipline, and responsibility and to give you the skills you need to once again become a productive member of society. You may recall that, during your tour, you met Miss Dykeman, our head matron. Miss Dykeman was extremely enthusiastic about your upcoming incarceration, but she was concerned the local jail might not properly search and disinfect you. She has informed me, therefore, that she will personally monitor your "reception" and ensure that your processing is complete and thorough. Miss Dykeman also expressed her concern that, as a "visitor," you might disrupt normal prison operations. I assured her that you will be a prisoner, not a tourist, and, as such, you will not be exempt from our rules or disciplinary procedures, up to and including the use of corporal punishment. In response, she has promised to hold you to a "strict standard" of behavior. She especially wanted you to be warned that, because of the dramatic increase in lesbian sexual activity, she has instituted a new policy: any inmate participating in a sexual act will be subject to corporal punishment, regardless of whether or not the act was consensual. Although this may seem extreme, the difficulty in proving consent has made it essential. The rules and regulations regarding allowable contact between inmates in the cells and shower area will be explained to you in detail as part of your orientation. I suggest you listen closely. Finally, you may wish to get your legal and financial affairs in order, since we do not permit visitors for the first 3 months, and I understand that a warrant for your arrest has already been issued. Expect it to be served within 48 hours. Because time is short, I have arranged for this letter to be marked for next-day delivery. I know you had a choice for your incarceration, and thank you for choosing the Texas State Prison for Women. Yours truly, Randy Flucker Warden TSPWRB Edited by C. Lakewood
